From the Director’s Desk We had a wonderfully busy summer, and we are so grateful to everyone who visited the Elk Grove Village Public Library. Whether you attended an event, borrowed books, used our computers, or simply stopped by to say hello, thank you for making the Elk Grove Village Public Library a vital part of our community. As summer transitions into a new school year, September offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month. A library card is more than just a way to borrow books. It is a doorway to learning, discovery, and connection. Students of all ages can explore our technology, access educational resources, and participate in meaningful programs. It’s one of the most valuable school supplies anyone can have. Speaking of students, we’re excited to share that we are creating a dedicated space just for teens: The High School Hub! This welcoming room will give high school students a place to study, collaborate, connect with friends, and explore library resources. We look forward to sharing more information as the project moves forward. We’re also thrilled to announce the launch of the Library’s first One Book, One Village community reading program! Our outstanding staff are planning a memorable experience that will bring our community together through the shared connection of reading one great book. Stay tuned for details in the coming months. There’s never been a better time to sign up for a library card and take advantage of everything the Library has to offer. Grab your fellow Gilmore fans and head to the library for a fun-filled evening of trivia celebrating everyone's favorite fast-talking motherdaughter duo. Test your knowledge of Stars Hollow, Luke's Diner, Friday night dinners, and all the quirky characters you love. Come solo or bring a team for an evening of fun, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs. Enjoy refreshments inspired by Lorelai and Rory's favorites! National Friends of the Library Week
Sunday, October 18 – Saturday, October 24 Join us in celebrating EGVPL's esteemed Friends of the Library. Throughout the week, the Friends will be hosting a raffle featuring a variety of baskets. Each basket will contain a selection of books, in addition to a gift card for a local establishment. Why not become a Friend today? You may register online, by phone, or in-person (*unless noted otherwise). Programs requiring registration are limited to EGVPL cardholders. T = Programs marked with this symbol are free, ticketed events.
Due to limited capacity, tickets will be distributed in the Youth Services Department on a first-come, first-served basis 30 minutes before the program start time. We will give one ticket per person and all attendees must be present to receive a ticket.

Virtual Cooking Class with Violeta Trujeque R
Families with children of all ages Tuesday, September 8, 6:30 pm Travel to Argentina through food and learn how to make tasty homemade empanadas with Chef Violeta Trujeque! She'll show you step by step how to make the dough from scratch, prepare a savory beef filling and flavorful chimichurri sauce, and fold and shape your own empanadas. Cook along from home during this virtual class, or simply watch, learn, and get inspired to try it yourself later! This is a virtual program that will take place on Zoom.
Fall Scavenger Hunts Children of all ages Scavenger hunts take place all day, every day on dates listed below in the Youth Services Department. Children may work independently or with the help of a parent/caregiver to find all the items and win a prize!

Recommended for ages 0-24 months with caregiver Mondays, September 14-November 16, 9:30 or 10:30 am Bond with your little one and meet new friends at a lap-sit storytime full of bounces, tickles, songs, and giggles. Each week we will move to music, learn new rhymes, listen to short stories, and end with time for free-play. This drop-in storytime is recommended for babies up to 24 months, but older siblings are welcome to join!

Grab your grown-up and get moving in an interactive storytime filled with music and play. Each week we will practice early literacy skills using stories, songs, and a project. NEW! Word of the Week
Become a dictionary detective with our new Word of the Week challenge! Each week, starting in September, stop by Youth Services to discover a new vocabulary word, look it up in the dictionary, write the definition, and answer a bonus question. This fun, self-guided activity helps build vocabulary, dictionary skills, and confidence with words. Complete the challenge and show a librarian to earn a small prize!

Read to the Dog R
Grades 2-8 Thursdays, September 10 and 24, October 8 and 22, and November 5 6:30, 6:45, 7, or 7:15 pm Children will have the opportunity to read in a positive, nonthreatening environment that encourages the love of reading by partnering with a willing, attentive, and non-judgmental therapy dog. Reading sessions are 15 minutes per reader. Parents/ caregivers are not allowed in the room and photos will be allowed after the last session of the evening. Grades 5-8 Saturdays, September 12, October 10, November 7, 9:30-4:30 pm Grab a supply kit and get creative! We’ll have a different mix of art supplies each month for you to experiment with and create art at your own pace — no experience needed. When you’re done, just return the supply kit to the Youth Reference Desk. Come hang out, make some art, and enjoy a creative break!
Crochet Corner
Grades 4-8 Sundays, September 13 and 27, October 11 and 25, November 8 and 22, 2-3 pm Crochet experience is required. Come hang out at Crochet Corner to create and meet other stitchers. We'll have yarn and hooks for you to use, so join in for some fun projects! Ms. Hilary will be there to help with crochet challenges along the way.

Monday, October 5, 6-8 pm After Session One, put your new skills to use! Create a set of festive pumpkin coasters using sustainable materials. Instructors will guide you through sewing and assembling your project.

Friends of the Library Enjoy the Change of Seasons with the EGVPL Friends As we move into September and October, we look forward to new school classes, cooler weather, falling leaves, and lots of new activities at the library. The Friends also have something special for you to look forward to this season. It’s the return of our October Basket Raffle! We will fill 7 baskets with a selection of books, DVDs, music, and other surprises. A different basket will be featured each day and you can enter once a day to hopefully win a great basket. Celebrate “Friends of the Library Week” with us! Our Friends of the Library book shelves will continue to offer new books, music, and movies for your enjoyment throughout the seasons.
