The Future Isn’t Looking Brighter for Fossil Fuel Diehards or Solar Stragglers. Go Solar Today. By Erick O’Donnell We already warned Arizonans back in October about looming price increases for both renewable and conventional energy sources. It’s starting to look as though we might have understated our case. World events are conspiring to further intensify the economic pressures bearing down on energy consumers, not just through higher oil and natural gas prices but also through rising costs for solar system components. The victims will include not just those who are stubbornly wedded to fossil fuels, but also the people who are forward-thinking enough to contemplate making the green transition but aren’t fast enough to commit in time to secure today’s still low prices. Now more than ever, it is crucial that homeowners go solar right away to lock in predictable low prices and big lifetime savings. Those financial benefits are still available, but they are poised to be eroded both by inflation itself, which is raising the cost of the panels, and by the government’s ongoing fight against inflation, which will raise the cost of financing a home solar system. Meanwhile, the alternative to going solar, sticking with fossil fuels, isn’t looking much better as war and sanctions halt the flow of natural gas and oil to the world energy market. Energy consumers should not expect to see imminent relief from high prices at the pump or on their monthly utility bills. International sanctions on Russia for its recent invasion of Ukraine have already blown up the numbers on gas station marquees, and the consequences are not likely to stop there. “Affordability is already deteriorating, and security and reliability are faltering,” Ryan Severino, chief economist at investment firm Jones Lang Lasalle, told “The Atlantic.” “In the short run, this means consumers will simply pay higher prices for whatever energy they can obtain for their immediate needs.” If Arizona homeowners want to seek shelter under solar panels, they
need to move fast because prices are projected to continue the trend of steady increases that began with the pandemic in 2020. “[Our] analysis indicates that module costs will continue to climb to their highest levels yet in [the third quarter of ] 2022 due to rising costs for module inputs such as polysilicon, silver, aluminum, and copper,” wrote energy economist Shenying Wu in the March edition of Rystad Energy’s Supply Chain Newsletter. “The spikes in the cost of energy and shipping are also pushing up end prices.” Prices could even threaten the nation’s solar energy rollout this year as some homeowners cancel installations in the face of swelling project costs, according to an earlier Rystad Energy report. “Panel prices are still low enough for homeowners to realize significant savings and profits,” says Michael O’Donnell, a partner and the head of sales at Arizona installation firm SunSolar Solutions. “But with price pressures looming on the horizon, the financial benefits could start shrinking at any moment.” Recent economic turbulence only adds to the usual reasons for making the switch sooner rather than later. Beginning in September, APS will reduce how much it pays new system owners for the surplus energy they export to the grid, just as it does every year. And the federal government’s tax credit for home solar systems is scheduled to drop from 26 percent of the system cost to 22 percent at the start of next year. Since it takes three months to get a system up and running, new customers will have to commit by October if they want to maximize their tax savings. The question is not whether energy costs will rise. They will rise, whether you are on board with the Green New Deal or think climate change is bunk. The Phoenix Film Festival started in 2000 by three local filmmakers to get their films some exposure in their hometown. Twentytwo years and thousands of movies later, the Phoenix Film Foundation has grown from a three-day exhibition to an 11-day celebration of film with over 300 films, filmmaking seminars, parties, and student workshops for over 27,000 attendees, all at the Harkins Scottsdale 101. The Phoenix Film Festival has been named one of The 25 Coolest Film Festivals and a Top 50 Worth the Entry Fee by “MovieMaker Magazine.” It has also been called, “The most filmmaker-friendly festival out there,” according to the festival.
The Phoenix Film Festival is a program under the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization Phoenix Film Foundation, and is connected to the Phoenix Film Society, International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival, Peoria Film Fest, IFP/Phoenix, Arizona Student Film Festival and Phoenix Critics Circle. Scottsdale Athlete Climbs Mount Everest As A Fundraiser for Charity Photos Courtesy of Clayton Wolfe CLAYTON WOLFE ISN’T YOUR AVERAGE 32-YEAR-OLD. The Scottsdale resident is also a pilot, former farmer, Scottsdale 20/30 Club member, and mountaineer. He is currently in hot pursuit of the Explorer’s Grand Slam, which is an adventurer’s challenge to reach the North Pole,
the South Pole and all the seven summits. Wolfe has found a way to connect his love of climbing to raising money to help those less fortunate. On April 18, he will begin his second attempt to summit Mt. Everest (last year, he got to 26,000 feet on his summit day when his teammate and Sherpa got sick and they had to turn back). He is inviting the community to get involved in his effort to tie his climb to a fundraising effort for the Scottsdale 20/30 Club. On his website, everest22.com, Wolfe is selling $100 Everest Golden Tokens (which will make the trek up to the Everest summit of 29,035 feet with him, then be mailed back to supporters) and raffle tickets for an all-inclusive trip to Everest Base Camp, with all proceeds benefiting the Scottsdale 20/30 Club (scottsdale2030.org) and the local children’s charities supported by the club, including Boys Hope Girls Hope and The Care Fund. This isn’t the first time Wolfe has climbed to raise funds for nonprofits. Before
returning to his hometown of Scottsdale in 2020, he owned a farm-to-table food brand called Northerly that featured a “Climb and Give Campaign,” donating one serving of oats grown on his farm per foot in total elevation he climbed to the Feeding America Network. By February 2020, he was able to climb three of the seven summits, which in total was 59,218 feet of elevation. This enabled him to donate 59,218 servings (11,103 pounds) of rolled oatmeal to St. Mary’s Food Bank. “Being a farmer made me who I am today,” says Wolfe. “However, it wasn’t easy to live in two countries, splitting my time between Canada and Scottsdale. Selling the farm simplified life, but it left me looking for a way to match my mountaineering to another philanthropic effort.” When Wolfe was introduced to the Scottsdale 20/30 Club, he says it was exactly what he was looking for. “This club is a way for me to be involved in supporting the community in a sustainable way—it provides me with accountability and a support system.”
“I’m a goal-oriented person, and this is a wonderful opportunity to make my pursuit of the Explorer’s Grand Slam bigger and greater than just myself,” he adds. “If I can do good for other people while reaching my goals, it’s a win-win.”

SONS OF KEMET, APRIL 15 From the mind of visionary saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings comes Sons of Kemet, an eclectic project combining elements of otherworldly jazz, funkinfused rock, cerebral hip hop, Caribbean folk, and diverse African traditions. The London-based quartet features some of the most progressive 21st-century talents in British jazz and beyond. Sons of Kemet is born of many vital elements, including a name that nods to ancient Egyptian culture and an unusual instrumentation combining tenor sax, tuba, and a pair of dynamic drummers.

BOOKER T. JONES, APRIL 23-24 Booker T. Jones is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer, and arranger. Best known as the front man of the band Booker T. & the MGs, he has worked with countless awardwinning artists of the twentieth and twentyfirst centuries and has earned a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Along with the band, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Jones continues to record and tour internationally, both as a solo artist and as head of Booker T.’s Stax Revue.

Bayardi has been selected to be Scottsdale’s new presiding city judge. Bayardi holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona College of Law and has more than 30 years of experience in the legal field. Since 2019, she has served as Assistant Chief Presiding Judge of the Phoenix Municipal Court, which is among the top ten busiest municipal courts in the United States. Prior to taking that position, she served for 12 years as an Associate Judge of that court, presiding over misdemeanor cases as well as civil traffic hearings and protective order hearings. Bayardi is active in many legal, community and education-

To offer all these activities, Scottsdale is looking to fill 74 lifeguard and swim instructor positions to safely and appropriately staff its four city pools. If minimum lifeguard levels are not met, it could lead to a reduction in pool hours of operation or elimination of lessons, lap swim or waterpark access altogether. To help fill these important positions, Scottsdale is piloting an incentive pay program. From Sunday, May 22 through Saturday, August 27, the minimum base pay for all city of Scottsdale lifeguard/instructors will increase from the current minimum of $12.90 an hour to $14.50 an hour. Scottsdale provides training and certification, which will be reimbursed after a lifeguard has worked for the city for 90 days. “We look forward to hiring incredible lifeguards,” says Nick Molinari, Scottsdale parks and recreation director. “Scottsdale is known for its outstanding pools with a focus on fun and safety. Our certified and trained lifeguards are what make our summers fun and successful. While lifeguarding is a serious job, it’s rewarding, and every day is different and exciting. Knowing that this milestone occasion can add a financial burden on students and their families, the Paradise Valley Education Association (PVEA) is partnering with the community to open the Prom Boutique back up so that students can attend the annual soiree without breaking the bank. Leah Knaeble is the Dean of Students for Desert Shadows and Explorer Middle Schools. She is also a member of the PVEA and says the group is trying to fill a void that is needed in the community by re-establishing this successful event. “We are collecting gently used items to give to our students for prom,” she explains. “We always have a great need for men’s items such as suits, shoes, socks, and other formal wear. We are always looking for formal dresses in sizes 14 to 24 but we accept all sizes for dresses, shoes, makeup samples, clutch purses, and more.”

The PVEA will hold three different Prom Boutique events throughout the month of April and all PVSchools high school students are invited to attend. The events are all being held at Sweetwater Community School, located at 4215 E. Andora Drive in Phoenix. Student IDs and face masks are required to attend.
Donations are also welcome for hair styling, nail salon, and restaurant gift certificates. These are also a great way to help students enjoy one of the most memorable evenings of their young lives.

The prom boutique event has been on hold the last couple of years due to the pandemic but now the PVEA is doing all they can to ensure the students have a good time and everyone who would like to attend prom is able to do so, despite economic situations.
If anyone in the community would like to donate any items that can be used to fill up the boutique, they are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. READY, SET, CAMP! HOW TO SELECT THE BEST SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID By Jill “Mamabug” Frier

he summer months are coming and parents are looking for ways to keep their kids busy while they’re out of school. One solution is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your favorite camper. WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. And, even in a virtual environment, summer camp provides kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their routine. Whether they’re at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, children and teens can let loose and have fun with other youth outside of a school or home environment. Summer camps are a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they’re out of school, and they also teach them important life lessons, like how to make new friends and gain independence.
HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are many options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics. There’s also camps focused on sports, theatre, art, and more. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets your child may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by allowing them to try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like.

My second memoir was just published called, “Jewish Girls Gone Wild: A Memoir of Skokie, Scottsdale & the Seventies.” It’s a coming-of-age memoir about moving here in 1973, a fish out of water, being a teen in the seventies, and watching my mother navigate her way from being an immigrant in 1949 to becoming a successful real estate agent and trying to change the world one house at a time. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Most any song performed by the great Patsy Cline. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… The memory of my mother,
who passed away in 2016 and who was a Holocaust survivor. I feel like the family history was entrusted to me to write and to pass on. I’m a firstgeneration American who grew up in incredible safety, yet I knew what a contrast my life was to my mother’s. I’m aware of the importance of keeping my family’s stories alive. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Watching “The Golden Girls.” Because of Betty White’s recent passing, I’m streaming the series, which has been a delight and many times makes me laugh out loud. THE PERFECT DAY… Is when the weather starts changing in October and the evenings get cool. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFITS ARE… Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona, New Song Center for Grieving Children, Friendship Circle, the Minkoff Center for Jewish Genetics, and Smile on Seniors. MY LIFE IS… Lucky. I’m lucky my family survived WWII. I’m lucky my mother wanted so many children because I was one of the last, number six of seven. I’m lucky to be a brain tumor and breast cancer survivor and that I’m happy and healthy. I’m lucky that I met my husband at a Jewish singles party in 1991 and that we’re heading toward our 30th anniversary. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS…That I walked into my first creative writing class at the age of 41
and had Lois Roma-Deeley for my professor, who is now the Poet Laureate of Scottsdale. Dr. Roma-Deeley taught creative writing so beautifully and with so much heart and passion that it changed me forever. I try to bring those same qualities to my teaching through Scottsdale Arts. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… To Spain and Portugal during the hottest days of summer here. Opportunity for the “Impaired Seller” By Joseph Callaway
W
hat is an “impaired seller”? Your house faces, backs, or sides to a busy street. Your house is near an airport with planes taking off and landing right over your backyard. Your house is old and original with Formica countertops and shag carpet. Your pool is empty and the plaster is cracked. You need a new roof. The yard is a jungle or the house is a mess. These are all impairments. In a normal market, impairments translate to selling for less. Fronting a busy street can be as much as a 20% discount. A new roof can cost $20,000 to $30,000. Power lines can be a 10% to 20% hit depending on proximity. If your house suffers these challenges, you are an impaired seller. Thinking about selling but daunted by the prospect of getting the house ready? You are impaired and, if you don’t have the time or money to fix it up, you will have to sell for less. Then along comes a once in a lifetime market. A market with five to 10 times the demand against a very low supply. That is the market we are in and have been in for more than a year and, depending on how you measure it, maybe three years. Suddenly impairments matter less and, in many cases, not at all. This is the current opportunity for the impaired seller. If you are a buyer and you say, “But this house is on a busy street,” and there are five other buyers putting in offers, that seller is not going to care about your noise sensitivity. If you look at a house that is tired and unprepared and you expect a carpet allowance, but several of the other seller offers plan to strip the flooring out when they remodel, your concerns are going to fall on deaf ears. Shadow Mountain High School embarks on a historic designation. The school is one of only 10 high schools’ Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) selected as the inaugural cohort of high school Space Force JROTC detachments. To commemorate this monumental milestone, 82 cadets recently attended an Air Force Deactivation, Space Force Activation Ceremony, and a Space Force Lapel Pin Ceremony. The Space Force JROTC program will commence on May 12. To prepare, Shadow Mountain cadets have received new uniform items identifying the unit as a new JROTC unit. New uniforms and a new curriculum focused on Space Force principles, mission objectives, and policies will be implemented in the next few years. Space Force JROTC is still in the developmental phase of establishing mission objectives, but a focus on STEM principles is expected. The U.S. Space Force was created in December 2019 and is the sixth branch of the United States military. PARADISE VALLEY VARSITY BOYS SOCCER TEAM HONORED WITH THE AIA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Paradise Valley High School’s Boys Varsity Soccer Team was recently
awarded the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Sportsmanship Award. s an estate planning attorney, I often get calls from people who’ve used online trust or will planning software, gone to a cheap trust mill, or had their friend, the former corporate attorney, put their plan together with forms they found in a book. When I’m asked about whether these are good ideas, I like to tell a story about my dear husband. My husband Andy is a great handyman. It’s wonderful that I can ask him to fix things around the house and know he will do it right. Once, he installed a cool new stove top in our home. It was all going smoothly until he put in the new vent hood. I stood across the kitchen watching him, then walked over to the door for a better vantage point as he finished the wiring. aturopathic medicine is a specific type of health care that focuses on whole patient wellness. The role of a naturopathic physician is to diagnose, treat and prevent acute and chronic illness by identifying underlying causes and removing barriers that may be impacting health, rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. This type of medicine can be very beneficial for children. Pediatric health care is a big part of my practice and children respond very well to integrative medicine. Here are a few ways a naturopathic physician can help support your child. WELL CHILD EXAMS/CHECKUPS: Well child exams start at infancy to check growth and development. This includes detailed health history review, diet and nutrition evaluation, physical examination, immunization discussions and support, and a growth review. In addition to the basics, we also focus on the naturopathic approach by supporting parents, discussing milestones, and supporting the immune system naturally. SKIN CONDITIONS: Skin conditions are very common in my practice, especially for children. Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions I see in children and can last throughout adulthood. Typically, this appears once food is introduced. When there is a skin condition, one of the first places we investigate is the digestive system. We focus on healing the gut by balancing the gut flora. Food sensitivities can also be a cause of skin conditions and we explore those by elimination of highly allergenic foods or food sensitivity testing. Other skin conditions, such as acne, can also be supported in similar ways with additional focus on hormone balancing and diet changes. DIGESTION: Gastrointestinal support is staple for all ages in naturopathic medicine; however, it can be an important part of pediatric support. Many children struggle with constipation, stomach pain and diarrhea.

D
o everyday activities like finding comfortable sleeping positions and walking feel impossible because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried “everything,” but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain. Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery. You’ve likely already tried many different things. Usually the list includes massage, stretching, chiropractic, and different exercises. One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.” You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors. The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain and will continue to persist unless they are fixed. This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the way to target the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills. 6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer Than It Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse. 2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back. 3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there. 4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work… 5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work. 6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique. Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked If any of these things have happened to you,
unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica. What To Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse. Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby. Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved. Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back. Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active. How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Mimi Cave shows some promise with her debut, giving the film a dreamlike sense through the lighting and camera work that calls back to old Giallo films of the 70s. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say in its favor—this film is another case of comedyhorror not balancing out. It’s hard to even call this a horror movie, as it is more of a psychological drama that occasionally has a freaky image. It’s hard to get invested in Lauryn Kahn’s script when you aren’t humored or scared, and it’s tougher with the two-dimensional characters that our usually talented cast are stuck with. It’s not a particularly interesting film, and the parallels between cannibalism and misogyny is odd and not clear. This really is a film that feels like two smashed into one with neither really turning out well.
the last few days of Yang’s life, finding out more about him, and the family’s reactions. The film touches on the melancholic discovery about who the person you thought you knew really was and the highs and lows of remembering them. It’s not overly somber, still having that feeling of love and care even in the face of doom, aided by the film’s visuals (which includes the rare aspect ratio changes that work and fit). Justin H. Min particularly stands out here as the titular android and his silent pain of wanting to connect with the outside world. It’s a shame to see A24 dump this, as it is one of their best in a while.

Levy’s directing is fine, an improvement from “Free Guy” but still far from the craftsmanship of “Real Steel” and “Night At The Museum.” It also features some of the worst needle drops from a recent film. By the end, you feel about it the same way as other Netflix blockbusters: dull, unimpressive but not terrible, and you forget about it quickly.

“Studio 666” The Foo Fighters move into an old mansion to complete their new album, only to discover the remains of its dark past. This is likely to be a movie that appeals primarily to fans of the band. If you’re unfamiliar with their music, you’ll not really get much out of it. There is some surprising gore here, and BJ McDonnell is a capable horror director with the set pieces. Unfortunately, it’s a film that can’t balance the horror with the humor, and the band members are awful actors. Perhaps you can argue that the film is intentionally trying to be silly and dumb, but that can only get you so far if your audience is not there for the band. One must still remember to make a movie that still works on its own.

“After Yang” A family prepares for the likelihood of their robotic companion’s likely death. “After Yang” reminds me a lot of when a family member or pet dies and the grief that comes with facing that inevitably. The story is presented as a series of episodes,
“The Adam Project” A young boy meets his future self to save the future from the dangers of time travel. The idea for the latest collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds is a good one. The film shines particularly in a few quiet scenes that remind us of the feelings of wanting to go back and fix what you did when you were younger. Unfortunately, the latter’s self-aware style from many of his recent films bleeds
