City News Nominations Now Open for the Spirit of Scottsdale Awards DO YOU KNOW A PERSON OR BUSINESS THAT EMBODIES SCOTTSDALE SPIRIT? Scottsdale’s Neighborhood Advisory Commission wants to showcase the people and organizations that embody the “Spirit of Scottsdale.” This award recognizes residents and organizations/ businesses that help to strengthen and build Scottsdale’s community through their commitment to and involvement in neighborhoods. This year, it is especially important to highlight those that have gone above and beyond to uplift Scottsdale’s residents and neighborhoods during the global pandemic, according to the city.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD ADVISORY COMMISSION WILL CONSIDER THOSE INDIVIDUALS OR ORGANIZATIONS THAT: • Have active years of service/involvement in strengthening neighborhood identity; • Champion community dialogue to produce constructive recommendations/solutions that address the dynamic need(s) of a neighborhood; • Provide unique contributions of time, effort, skills, and/or financial resources to a neighborhood. Nominations are being accepted now through December 31. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the 2019 nominees will be rolled into the current award cycle with the award recipients being recognized at a spring 2021 Scottsdale City Council meeting.

Scottsdale Police Chief Alan Rodbell Retiring SCOTTSDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT CHIEF OF POLICE ALAN RODBELL RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL BE RETIRING ON DECEMBER 1 TO PURSUE AN OPPORTUNITY IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR.
the City of Scottsdale as Chief since 2003. Chief Rodbell is the sixth Chief of Police for the Scottsdale Police Department with the second longest tenure as Chief (Walter Nemetz served as Chief of Police for 19 years, from 1963 to 1982).
Chief Rodbell’s law enforcement career began in Maryland in 1976 as a police officer with the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), where he served for 25 years, retiring as Assistant Chief of Police. Chief Rodbell joined the Scottsdale Police Department as Assistant Chief in 2001 and was soon promoted to Chief of Police, serving

We are getting ready to help Scottsdale’s lowincome seniors as well as people with disabilities for the holidays. Last year, the Adopt-A-Senior program provided 343 Scottsdale seniors with holiday gifts; this year, our goal is to assist even more people. There are many in our community who do not have the financial means or family to fully enjoy the holiday season, which is what Adopt-A-Senior is all about. There are a couple of ways to provide a joyous holiday to many of our neighbors in need. BECOME A SPONSOR AND ADOPT-A-SENIOR There are multiple sponsorship options to choose from. Guests starting their tour from the northwest part of town might want to begin at Curt Mattson’s Studio #25, near the intersection of Carefree Highway and 32nd Street. e have all heard about those elusive “California buyers”. Well it is true. In San Francisco one of the countries priciest markets, properties for sale have increased 51% year over year. 020 has proven to be a challenging year in many ways, not the least of which has been a less than hospitable financial environment. Events ranging from a significant bear market in stocks earlier in the year to a dramatic increase in job layoffs have put many Americans in difficult financial positions. If you find yourself in these circumstances, you may be wondering what it will take to get back on track. A recent study by Ameriprise Financial shows that with or without a pandemic, financial setbacks are more common than you might think. More than three-quarters of those surveyed experienced at least one major financial setback in their lives and this does not include events since COVID-19 emerged.1 According to the study, more than half of respondents faced setbacks costing them at least $50,000, and for one-third of respondents the losses exceeded $100,000. The impact was experienced across a wide range of households regardless of age or income level. But persistence paid off – a full 90 percent of respondents who experienced a serious setback say they have recovered from it. What can we learn from their experiences? Here are three key takeaways: #1 BE READY FOR ANYTHING Financial setbacks can occur for a variety of reasons. Based on survey results, those range from investment market declines to earnings that did not meet expectations, to a job loss. Other events that created negative financial consequences include making a bad financial decision, having to provide support to family members, and divorce or illness. In short, there are any number of obstacles that could put a wrench in your financial plans. Having a contingency plan in place to respond to these types of emergencies can help you weather the immediate financial stress.
lasted from one-to-five years. For others, it took longer, even more than 10 years in some cases. Their experiences show that overcoming a financial setback typically requires a deliberate approach. For half of survey respondents, that included finding ways to cut back on spending. Tied to that, some (37%) say they changed their practices around saving money. A quarter of respondents decided that adding work hours or delaying retirement was a necessary step. Others found that having emergency reserve funds in place helped deal with their sudden financial shortfall. #3 YOU MAY BE BETTER PREPARED AS A RESULT Despite the stress of suddenly facing a financial struggle, there may be a bright side. More than half of survey respondents said they ultimately felt stronger as a result of the experience. And almost all (97%) say they have focused on improving their ability to withstand a repeat event. They decided to boost their emergency savings, many accumulating more than $50,000 in cash reserves, or enough to fill a six-month income gap should they face another setback in the future. GETTING BACK ON TRACK Whether the economic fallout from COVID-19 or some other factor has resulted in a financial setback for you this year, remember that you are not alone. Take the matter seriously but keep a level head. You’ll want to closely examine your financial situation to determine the most appropriate steps to take to get your recovery underway. ON VETERANS DAY, NOVEMBER 11, THE BOURBON CELLAR WILL BE HONORING ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES AND FIRST RESPONDERS BY HOSTING A FREE DAY-LONG BUFFET. “Everyone is welcome to come share in this wonderful day of remembering why this country is so great,” says Doug Smith, chef and owner of The Bourbon Cellar. “I know that I’m blessed—I get to do what my passion is each and every day. I want to give back to the community, especially our veterans and first responders, and it is our great customers that allow me to do that.” After the Veterans Day feast, Smith says that the monthly free buffet in honor of “all those who protect our country” will continue on the third Wednesday of every month. On those days, the buffet will open at 4 p.m., and like a family cook out, everyone is welcome. “Before COVID-19, we would do this monthly free buffet dinner and feed anywhere from 80 to 1,200 people depending on the day. I’ve been doing this for about five or six years and, as a Navy veteran myself, I just wanted to find a way I could give back.” The monthly meal is not only a way to give back but to bring the community together. Grand Canyon University
hosts the dessert table and French’s Meat Shoppe sponsors the event as well. “I’d like to invite any and everyone out; this is not about the free meal, it’s about honoring our veterans and first responders,” Smith shares. With caution surrounding gatherings of any kind, Smith notes that all COVID-19 precautions will be taken during the event. “We will of course follow all COVID-19 guidelines and the event will happen throughout the day, so it will be as socially distant and staggered as possible,” he assures. All restaurant staff will be wearing masks and patrons will be required to do so when not eating and drinking. For those who wish to support local veterans, donations will be accepted at the November feast and all of the following ones. Donations are given directly to veterans’ causes and the local legion. “I feel like with everything going on right now it’s great to pause, enjoy a meal, and reflect on how great this country is,” Smith says. “It truly is the land of opportunity; the place where dreams come true. Charity Make a Difference in the Lives of Foster Children This Holiday Season By Tamara Webb, Director of Operations, OCJ Kids
A
s the holiday season approaches, the focus of OCJ Kids remains the same: to impact Arizona’s foster children and create memories to last a lifetime. Since 2006, OCJ Kids has provided opportunities for our local community to wrap around Arizona’s foster children who currently live in group homes. Arizona currently has more than 15,000 children in the foster care system. Many of those children do not live with a traditional foster family, but live in group homes. OCJ Kids works with the group homes and with local Department of Child Safety offices to bring hope to these children. As children enter the foster care system they often come with only the clothes on their back. From the moment children in Arizona enter foster care until the time they leave the system, OCJ Kids is involved in bringing hope to them. Diapers, wipes, pajamas, hygiene products and clothing are provided as they enter foster care. Transition suitcases filled with supplies and resources are provided to teens as they leave the system at 18. Every year, OCJ Kids hosts a career development fair, cowboy camp, back to school celebration, and Christmas bowling party.
Riding Lessons and Beyond! The HoofbeatZ USA program develops confident, empathetic, well-educated horsemen capable of excelling in any future horse-related discipline. We achieve this goal through the use of our patented, structured program that educates horse enthusiasts on the ground as well as in the saddle.
During this COVID-19 pandemic, OCJ Kids provided toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies to group homes that were unable to locate these items. We have provided hundreds of cloth face masks, made and donated by our volunteers, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing spray for the group homes.

Health HonorHealth Enrolls First Patient in the Southwest for Phase 3 Clinical Trial of Novel Drug to Battle COVID-19
H
onorHealth Research Institute has begun enrolling participants in a clinical trial at three hospitals within the HonorHealth system in Phoenix and Scottsdale to study an investigational drug to treat patients with COVID-19. The randomized controlled Phase 3 trial compares the safety and efficacy of two different doses of the drug ruxolitinib to placebo in participants with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who are on a ventilator. In a recently published article, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that of the patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized, 14.2% were treated in the intensive care unit and of those patients, 85.9% received mechanical ventilation.
“For our sickest patients with COVID-19 infection, those in intensive care on ventilators, we are sorely in need of new options, this study could potentially reduce the duration of time that patients are intubated on ventilators,” stated Michael S. Gordon, MD, principal investigator of the study.
(CRS), or “cytokine storm,” an uncontrolled and overwhelming release of pro-inflammatory proteins throughout the body.
Researchers throughout the country expect to enroll approximately 500 participants with confirmed COVID-19 infection that must have been confirmed two weeks prior to randomization. Participants must also be intubated and receiving mechanical ventilation at the time of randomization, among other criteria.
Ruxolitinib is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of adult patients with intermediate or high-risk myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera after resistance or intolerance to hydroxyurea, and steroid refractory acute graft versus host disease. Ruxolitinib is not approved for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 ARDS who are on a ventilator, but positive clinical trial results could lead to a pathway for FDA approval for this use.
Prior studies have shown that many patients with severe respiratory disease due to COVID-19 have features consistent with cytokine release syndrome
The study will compare two doses of ruxolitinib – 5 mg and 15 mg twice daily – plus standard of care to placebo for a period of up to 28 days.

he holidays are just around the corner, and when the family gathers, it can be a great time to talk to the person or persons you have chosen as your executor, personal representative and/or trustee. Community A Scottsdale Mom Nominated for a Global Author Award Shares Her Story By Ryann Checchi
C
rystal Waltman, a fourth generation Arizonan, has been nominated for a 2020 Author Academy Elite Award for her book, “Quitting to Win,” as one of the top ten health books of the year. It was also No. 1 on Amazon’s new release list for five weeks. “Quitting to Win” is about her triumph over tragedy story through sports, spine surgery, addiction, and sobriety. Waltman started playing softball at age four and training competitively at age 10. She became an all-around collegiate athlete who gave her body and soul to softball. She had the “play hard, party hard” mentality, and at the age of 14, Waltman began abusing alcohol. When she was 18, she started having back pain and turned to painkillers and other substances. The combination of factors – back pain, alcoholism and prescription painkillers – was a recipe for disaster.
She abused alcohol for 20 years and couldn’t imagine living past 40. Now, Waltman is 42 and sober. Making it past the milestone she never thought would happen, she felt a calling to share her story in the book, “Quitting to Win.” “I never imagined myself living past the age of 40,” Waltman says. “But after overcoming alcohol abuse and losing my best friend to mental illness, I recognized that there are so many people suffering in silence and have been impacted by similar situations. This book is my message of hope to those struggling.” “Quitting to Win” was published earlier this year and Waltman has received daily messages from readers about how it’s helped them start the conversations of uncomfortable life lessons and topics with family members and friends. With her book, she aims to get it into substance abuse and addiction recovery centers throughout the nation and help remove the shame and stigma that’s at-
tached to addiction, alcoholism, as well as raise awareness to mental illnesses. “I wanted to share my raw story about physical and emotional trauma, substance abuse, mental health and overcoming them,” Waltman says. “I hoped it made my readers feel safe enough to start the dialogue and have those uncomfortable, yet important conversations. In addition to my story, I designed the book to act as a guide for small groups with discussion questions in the appendix.” Waltman has continued to coach nutrition and fitness for the past twenty years and eventually found her calling to spiritual fitness. In her book, she shares her proven plan of how to find and keep emotional sobriety for those suffering from anxiety, depression and addiction. In addition to “Quitting to Win,” she will be releasing a digital course called “Eating to Win” and has plans to write a book in correlation to the online course.
