THOMPSON PEAK DOG PARK PROJECT Recently, the Scottsdale City Council adopted a resolution to allow a $490,750 contract with Environmental Planning Group, LLC to design a new dog park in Thompson Peak Park. According to information on file with the city of Scottsdale, the new facilities include a 3-and-a-half-acre dog park with separate fenced and gated turf areas, parking for 100 vehicles, and a footbridge that will connect the new space to existing Thompson Peak Park amenities. scottsdaleaz.gov LOCAL ROAD DEVELOPMENT

This expansion is set to occur along the stretch of road from Happy Valley Road to Jomax Road and includes intersection improvements, landscaped medians, bike lanes, sidewalks, trails to improve safety, and capacity and accessibility improvements for motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The project will cost an estimated $1.45 million, with a noise study and identification of right-of-way needs expected to be completed by July 2023. After recent reports that CrackerJax Family Fun & Sports Park was sold to billionaire George Kurtz in a $55.5 million deal, CrackerJax management released a statement on the @CrackerJaxFunPark Facebook page and their website stating that the 30-yearold business was not sold, only the land that the amusement park operates on. “CrackerJax Family Fun & Sports Park Business has not been sold. We are open for business and continue to operate under the same ownership that has been proudly serving the Valley for 30 years,”
Luxury developer Optima has announced a new residential and commercial proposal for a vacant lot located on the south side of Loop 101, near Mayo Avenue, Scottsdale Road, and Scottsdale Airpark. The development, called Optima McDowell Mountain Village, consists of six 11-story buildings containing 1,500 apartments and condominiums along with 31,000 square feet of commercial space. Currently, the land is zoned commercial. Optima will need to present proposals to multiple agencies and gain approval from the Scottsdale City Council. optima.inc

City of Scottsdale Saves Record Amount of Water; Continues Encouraging Local Residents To Do The Same

AFTER COMMITTING TO A 5% REDUCTION IN WATER USE IN 2022, SCOTTSDALE ANNOUNCES CITY OPERATIONS HAVE EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS AND ACHIEVED 8% REDUCTIONS WHEN COMPARING FIRST QUARTER DATA. Residential and commercial use for this same period is down 2.5% - halfway to achieving the voluntary reduction goal. Since enacting Stage One of Scottsdale’s Drought Management Plan, the city has made considerable efforts to find ways to reduce water savings through Scottsdalerun facilities and processes: • Scottsdale facilities has executed an extensive water audit program that has been utilized on 49 facilities so far this year - prioritizing the largest facilities for maximum water savings. The department has undergone replacing existing fixture upgrades, optimizing cooling tower processes, and performing leak detection audits. • Scottsdale Parks and Recreation has contributed significantly to reaching this goal as part of their commitment to conservation efforts with a goal of 15% less water use than annually allotted. • Scottsdale Water has hired a contract team that accomplishes water main and hydrant flushing by recycling water back into the system instead of discharging water into the streets – a feat that can save more than 300,000 gallons of water per day. During the contracted four-day period, more than five miles of pipes were flushed, saving more than one-million gallons of water from being wasted.

The data was analyzed based on a threeyear average from 2019-2021. This average accounts for an increase in residential use during COVID, a very dry summer in 2020, and a wet monsoon season in 2021. “This is exciting news,” says Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer. “The city has really embraced increasing water conservation on the news of the Colorado River shortage and it’s rewarding to know that efforts are paying off… With summer and peak water demand season, everyone needs to make a conscience effort to conserve this precious resource.” To assist resident and commercial customers in the 5% voluntary reduction goal, Scottsdale Water has many resources available online and in person to help residents and businesses find opportunities to reduce their water use. Several of the programs include leak detection through a new WaterSmart portal, rebates for turf removal and WaterSense fixture installation, and through landscape and irrigation upgrades. In 2022, the city’s Water Conservation team has received an 800% increase in homeowner’s association (HOA) inquiries for assistance; a statistic that shows while the water numbers may not be where the city hopes quite yet, the word is getting out. The conservation team assists

these HOAs by internally looking at their water use and finding ways to improve efficiency, particularly in eliminating turf areas and converting to desert landscaping – something that has saved other HOAs thousands of gallons of water daily. Scottsdale City Manager Jim Thompson officially announced Stage One of Scottsdale’s Drought Management Plan on August 16, 2021, because of the Bureau of Reclamation’s (BOR) declaration of a Tier One Colorado River shortage and the urgency of the situation on this river system. Recent forecasts by the BOR show an increased likelihood of a Tier 2 shortage for 2023. While water will continue to be delivered as normal to customers now and into the future, Scottsdale views this declaration as a significant milestone that requires extensive examination by all customers to further use water wisely and efficiently for the long-term viability and sustainability of the city.

TUESDAY, JUNE 7 AT SCOTTSDALE CITY HALL, LOCATED AT 3939 N. DRINKWATER BOULEVARD. Meetings are broadcast electronically through Cox Cable Channel 11 and streamed online at ScottsdaleAZ.gov (search “live stream”). The City of Scottsdale will increase its proposed primary property tax levy $931,256 (exclusive of new construction) due to tort liability claim payments and the two percent statutory adjustment. Because property valuations increased, the City of Scottsdale can decrease its primary property tax rate from $0.5039 per $100 of assessed valuation down to $0.4970 in Fiscal Year 2022/23 and still achieve the proposed levy amount.
The city’s proposed secondary property tax levy will decrease $5.02 million due to use of accumulated fund balance because of savings achieved through a general obligation debt refinancing. In addition, due to increased property values, the current secondary tax rate of $0.5042 is expected to decrease by $0.0941 to $0.4101 per $100 of assessed valuation in FY 2022/23. In Fiscal Year 2022/23, citizen tax bills will reflect an estimated combined property tax rate of $0.9071, which is $0.1010 less than the Fiscal Year 2021/22 combined rate of $1.0081.
The City Treasurer’s Office at 480-3122427 can answer questions regarding the city property tax levy or other budget issues. TRUTH IN TAXATION HEARING: NOTICE OF TAX INCREASE In compliance with section 42-17107, Arizona Revised Statutes, the City of Scottsdale is notifying its property taxpayers of Scottsdale’s intention to raise its primary property taxes over last year’s level. Scottsdale is proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $931,256 or 2.66 percent.
For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Scottsdale’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $49.70 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase). Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $48.41. This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides.
WHERE DO YOUR PROPERTY TAXES GO IN SCOTTSDALE? About nine cents of every dollar in property taxes paid by Scottsdale property owners goes to the city. The remaining 91 cents goes to public schools, Maricopa County, community colleges, and various special taxing districts. Of the nine cents of every dollar paid by Scottsdale property owners, four cents go to support voter approved bond programs. The amount of property tax paid is based on two factors: the tax levy set by the city and the assessed valuation of the property (as determined by the county).
2022 Transportation Action Plan Approved by Scottsdale City Council By Cristina Lenko SCOTTSDALE CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED THE 2022 TRANSPORTATION ACTION PLAN (TAP 2022). The plan is focused on flexible transportation planning, implementing new technology, and investing in existing
infrastructure. TAP 2022 is divided into five elements: Streets, Transit, Bikeways, Pedestrian use, and Trails. “The Transportation Action Plan prioritizes enhancements to existing transportation modes throughout the city,” says Transportation and Streets Director Mark Melnychenko. “How we get around Scottsdale is constantly evolving. The action plan gives staff the flexibility to meet the changing transportation needs of our residents and visitors.” TAP 2022 PRIORITIES INCLUDE: • Supporting sustainability and cost savings by preserving and maintaining infrastructure. • Ensuring flexibility to respond to changing technology and shifting priorities. • Closing system gaps and improving local and regional connectivity with path systems, trail corridors, and transit routes.

• Building complete streets to provide safe access for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. • Enhancing transit services with increased trolley frequency and connections. TAP 2022 was developed alongside the city’s 2035 General Plan and replaces the 2016 Transportation Master Plan. Approval by the City Council was preceded by a year-long public involvement process including public meetings, input from the Scottsdale Transportation Commission, and a work study session with City Council members. American Legion Post 34 to Celebrate Flag Day on June 14 AMERICAN LEGION POST 34 WILL BE CELEBRATING FLAG DAY WITH A CEREMONY BEGINNING AT 6 P.M. ON JUNE 14. The event will take place at Post 34, located at 6272 E. Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek. Boy Scouts from local Troop 15 will be in attendance presenting our nation’s flags for proper disposal. Post 34 turns 75 this year and the celebration of Flag Day is part of an ongoing effort to honor that milestone. Flag Day has its roots starting in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating how the U.S. flag would look. “Prior to the resolution, there were many different flags/banners, each representing different units of our fledgling nation,” says Daphi Hagen, auxiliary officer. “Through the years, many changes have been made. We have had three major flag acts that have shaped what we have today.” On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established Flag Day on June 14 by official decree. Although this is not an official federal holiday, it is celebrated across the United States. American Legion Post 34 has been giving back to community charitable organizations for 75 years. Its mission is to support and advocate on behalf of veterans, active military and their families. Its members consistently reach out to assist veterans and others in need. The event was sponsored by the Sonoran Arts League and CCUSD Education & Community Services. Visual art teachers in the community selected their most gifted art students in third through 12th grade to acknowledge their excellence and showcase their work. This year the top honors of the Jeff Cross Memorial Bronze Bell and the scholarship were both awarded to Sydney Terpstra, a graduating senior attending Cactus Shadows High School, for her dedication and talent. “Her work is uniquely creative and is executed with mastery of media,” says Sonoran Arts League Youth Art Chair
Robin Ray. “The concepts and themes in her work are well developed and explore thoughtful provoking images. We honor the excellence and talents of the gifted art students in our community and know they will go out in the world to make a difference with their creative talents.” Sydney’s art was selected based on her portfolio, sketchbook, essay, and transcripts. She is planning to attend Arizona State University this fall to pursue an art education.

Phoenix Rescue Mission Launches 10th Code:Red Campaign
Nonprofit Accepting Monetary, Nonperishable Food and Water Donations for Heat Relief THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE AND PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION (PRM) IS KICKING OFF ITS 10TH ANNUAL, CITY-WIDE CODE:RED SUMMER HEAT RELIEF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CITY’S UNHOUSED AND AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS. According to Maricopa County, at least 130 individuals experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes in 2021. The nonprofit’s goal is to protect our most vulnerable population by collecting and distributing one million bottles of water. Through August 31, PRM is providing essential resources to sustain the city’s homeless population, such as nonperishable food and water supplies. PRM is seeking monetary, nonperishable food and water donations. Monetary donations will be matched up to $150,000, made possible by a grant by several supporters of Phoenix Rescue Mission. “During the summer months in Phoenix, asphalt can heat up to a deadly 170 degrees. Anything above 104 degrees can cause brain damage and death,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission CEO Ken Brissa. “While many Valley residents find respite indoors, our unhoused neighbors cannot take shelter from the heat and need help that can come to them.”

A liquor license that allows beer, wine and cocktails will provide takeout guests with a ton of new options. Or just sit at the bar and watch TV while you are waiting on your takeout food. You can even enjoy your packaged food on the patio if you want.” The physical space can still offer patio and interior seating for hosted special events. “We can host corporate dinners, small business Happy Hour parties, family reunions, entire restaurant buy outs—any social event you can throw at us,” Craig adds. “This concept really rounds out all of our restaurants nicely,” he continues. “It helps to relieve the takeout pressure at our other locations, allows us to continue to offer great quality food, and it offers a space for events, too. Hello Neighbor! kitten, then make dinner, and when it’s cool weather, I’ll go for a walk. At night I’ll either work on the book I’m currently writing or read a book for inspiration.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… We recently started fostering kittens through Newborn Kitten Rescue so that organization is near and dear to my heart. We have fostered over 25 kittens over three seasons. Other favorites include NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association) and the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona.
MY FAMILY IS… Everything to me. I’ve been married 29 years and Scott and I have three adult children. They bring me so much joy and it’s fun to watch them begin to navigate their adult lives.
MY LIFE IS… Pretty good right now! I am busy but not stressed (thanks to yoga) and I love the work that I get to do, and my family is healthy and happy.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… My laptop is the one object I probably couldn’t function without. Other things I can’t live without are yoga, the occasional iced vanilla latte, and dark chocolate.

THE PERFECT DAY… I would get up around 9 a.m. but lounge in bed for a while, taking my time to get up. I am not the type of person who wakes at 6 a.m. to enjoy coffee in the quiet of the early morning. I’d rather use that time sleeping. Then I might do two back-toback yoga classes. After that, I would stop somewhere for a coffee or iced tea, then go somewhere to write for a while. The Real Estate Market Is Changing By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker
M
any of you have asked me to let you know when we see a change in the market. Please allow this article to serve as your official notice: THE MARKET IS CHANGING. And the shift is happening quickly.
The effect is especially prevalent in the price ranges from $500,000 to $2 million, which corresponds almost perfectly with the Scottsdale North market. The largest change was in properties between $500,000 to $1 million. That number doubled in just six weeks. If this trend continues for several months, the market dynamics will change significantly. This sounds like an onslaught of new listings, but this story about increases in supply is really about a drop in demand. Homes simply aren’t selling at a fast enough pace to absorb the listings being added, so supply is building. Why? The drop in demand is due to a combination of sudden and dramatic increases in interest rates combined with the eye-watering price increase over the last year or so. The rising prices, along with the rising interest rates, are doing what they are supposed to do – dampen demand. Dampened demand means fewer homes selling. Simply put: when fewer homes sell, supply builds.
May 19: Our primary leading market indicator, the Cromford Market Index, is telling us that the cooling trend is getting even more powerful. From last October until this March, we saw a significant downward trend in the supply of active listings for sale. That trend produced a frenzy of multiple offer situations that produced rapid price acceleration. That trend has completely changed, and over the past six weeks, active listing counts have been rising rapidly. For years, buyers have been crying out for more supply. Their wish is finally coming true. From May 7 - 14, we saw more than 3,000 listings added to the greater Phoenix residential database for the first time since 2010. Active listings are up over 30% in a single month, which is one of the most dramatic shifts in direction we have ever seen. The overall supply of active listings for sale has increased almost by half since this time last year. There are homes to buy right now. myhyperlocalnews.com
I have often said that Scottsdale North buyers are much less interest rate sensitive than other buyers. And they are! But this double whammy even has them a bit shell-shocked. And as I write this, their other equities, like the stock market, are getting trounced too. WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN? If you are a seller, your prices are not dropping, and there is still below the normal competition. If you are a Scottsdale North buyer, you have more choices and less competition. (More good news: for the first time ever, jumbo loans are cheaper than conventional!) Giving us some perspective, our friend and resident real estate statistical genius, Michael Orr, at the Cromford Report, said it well: “The market is in the early stage of shifting out of an insane seller market and into a mere frenzy seller market. Before we know it, it could be a regular old hot seller market where properties still appreciate but take multiple weeks to sell…While the market is still strongly in favor of sellers, it is changing rapidly. For those sellers waiting to sell close to the peak of price, this may be the time to list. Prices are still projected to continue rising but at a slower pace over the next few months.” And for more perspective: as I write this article, supply
is still about 70% below what we consider normal for this time of year. That is important to remember. We are entering a much more uncertain period and caution is advisable. The days of sellers demanding buyers remove all contingencies are likely behind us for a while. Home prices aren’t coming down, but sellers’ negotiating power apparently is. Sellers should forget about breaking records or your overpriced neighbor’s listing and listen to the market and the advice of an experienced agent. Caution is advisable; fear is not. HERE IS OUR FALCON CLASS OF 2022 BY THE NUMBERS: • 473 students graduated. • 67 students were in our Cactus Shadow eLearning Program and two were early graduates. • 198 students have been with us since kindergarten. • Their combined GPA is a 3.359 on a weighted scale and the highest is a 4.850. • Congratulations to Sophia Barnedo and Bryden Kaminsky on being named Co-Valedictorians. They each had a weighted GPA of 4.850. Ryan Toughill was named Salutatorian and was also named a National Merit Finalist.
• One senior had perfect attendance for the 21-22 school year. • 51 seniors participated in the Superintendent’s Challenge, accruing 9,052 hours of community service in four years. Scottsdale 4th of July Celebration at WestWorld Is Back!

he Scottsdale 4th of July Celebration at WestWorld returns for a ninth year to deliver patriotic and cool family entertainment capped off by one of Arizona’s largest fireworks displays on July 4 from 4:309:30 p.m. The 300,000 square-foot fully airconditioned Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center at WestWorld will offer activities for the whole family, including a Parade of Heroes, live ensemble performances from hit movie film “Encanto,” fun games, and a backyard barbecue. The evening will culminate with the night sky lit with one of Arizona’s largest fireworks shows, beginning at approximately 9 p.m. Guests will be “Red, White & COOL” in the air-conditioned comfort of the North Hall at WestWorld with an exciting
lineup of entertainment that features three performances by characters from feature film “Encanto,” including Mirabel, Isabela, Luisa, Dolores, Pepa, Félix, and Camilo, singing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” In addition, America’s Got Talent “Canine Stars Stunt Dog Show” performs three times at the event. Scottsdale 4th of course is known for its lively activities for the family to enjoy such as learning the cha-cha slide and chicken dance, old-fashioned cake walks, face painting, and more. The Rodeo Arena is activated once again in 2022, with mutton busting for kids and the Copper State Rodeo Company presenting a Scottsdale 4th favorite bull riding competition. At approximately 8:30 p.m., huge garage doors open to the west for the Scottsdale 4th of July grand finale fireworks display, lighting up the sky over the McDowell Mountains.
Scottsdale 4th of July also continues with the second Parade of Heroes, recognizing outstanding leaders for their tireless efforts to protect and improve the lives of Arizonans. Heroes are honored in the categories of safety, fire safety, neighborhoods, veterans, healthcare, and community. Each will take the stage to receive the honor and then together are ceremoniously escorted throughout the massive WestWorld complex where drivein guests await the fireworks show. Heroes are introduced to drive-in guests through the event’s own designated patriotic music radio channel. The Importance of Summer Reading Beat The Heat and Encourage Your Kids to Curl Up With a Good Book This Summer By Donna Throckmorton
T
he school year has wrapped up and summer is here. As vacation begins, many parents are struggling to find productive things for kids to do other than spending hours on their electronics. One activity that should be on all to-do lists this summer is joining the summer reading program at your local library. Reading, throughout all seasons and all stages of life, is important. It is indisputable that reading skills are critical for success in school, work, and life in general. In fact, a study from the University College, London, Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additional studies have shown that a child who reads proficiently by the end of third grade is more likely to graduate high school because the end of third grade marks the point when children transition from learning to read to using reading to learn other subjects.
Arizona’s Summer Reading Program encourages participants to head to their local library and select and read any material of their choice for just 20 minutes every day. For very young or struggling readers, be sure to spread shorter literacy activities throughout the day. It is recommended that students read books that they choose for themselves; children read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. The ability to choose gives children autonomy and encourages them to stay committed to their decisions. Even re-reading the same books can help build fluency. Summer reading at participating libraries also includes adult programs. Since children often replicate the behaviors of their parents, parents are encouraged to read more as well. Plus, reading has benefits for adults too. Reading reduces stress, slows the progress of age-related memory loss, and boosts sleep quality.
A great way to encourage reading this summer is to schedule consistent time to read as a family. Setting up family reading time at the end of the day can help everyone wind down and make bedtime easier. Summer library programs for all ages provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. It is easy to get started: Simply visit your local library and sign up today! t’s summertime! We are all ready to get back to traveling and enjoying our summer. Of course, it is important to remain healthy while traveling. Here are some helpful tips to keep you and your family healthy while you enjoy those welldeserved vacations.
HYDRATION: When we travel, our water intake typically decreases. We do not want the burden of having to stop so frequently to use the bathroom. When we get dehydrated, we can have more inflammation in the body. It is important to drink at least half your weight in ounces each day. I will often suggest adding electrolytes while traveling too. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated while traveling.

IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT: I always travel with the immune system essentials. I bring Vitamin C and Vitamin D for general support. This is great to take the days leading up to travel or daily to enhance the immune response. I also like to bring elderberry for the entire family. Elderberry is an herb that is great for supporting and boosting the immune system. You can take it daily for immune maintenance. NUTRITION: Food is one of the most exciting parts of a vacation and I love exploring new places to eat and trying new foods. Often, we go off our regular eating habits while on vacation. It can be helpful to find a place to stay that has a kitchen so you can plan to make a few meals. I always recommend healthy road trip snacks for those long trips. Trail mix, fruit, and healthy snack bars are always a great idea. If you have snacks packed, you are less likely to stop at a convenience store and grab those less healthy snacks. STAY ACTIVE: If you have a long flight, make sure to get up at least once per hour and walk a bit for better circulation. Find fun family activities that include hiking and exploring. Take a nice long walk after a big meal. If on a long road trip, take

How A Revocable Trust Benefits You and Your Family By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
T
he Revocable Living Trust is the foundation for most estate plans prepared in my office. The trust reduces expenses and provides for a smoother administration of your estate. It not only avoids the time and expense of a probate action at your death, but it also avoids court proceedings if you are incapacitated. I like to think of your Trust as your treasure chest. The assets you worked and saved to accumulate go into your Trust. While you are alive and able, you are taking care of the treasure chest as the trustee, and you are the only beneficiary of the assets. If you can’t take care of your treasures (manage your finances), either because of your death or because you are incapacitated, you have named a successor trustee to step in to take over managing the assets. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign, and record a deed to the house. In the deed John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. The same thing happens with your financial accounts.
Once your Trust is in place, you continue as always to be the manager of your financial affairs. You manage your assets, receive the income, write checks, make deposits, pay bills, and buy and sell property. You have full control. But if you can no longer manage your financial affairs, either because of death or incapacity, your Trust contains the instructions for who is in charge – the designation of your successor trustee. The Trust tells the successor trustee how they are to manage the trust assets and distribute money for your benefit if you are incapacitated. The Trust also contains your instructions for administering your assets and distributing them to your beneficiaries at death. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, when a client has become incapacitated or passed away, their designated successor trustee certainly notices the difference. The trust results in a much easier transition for them to take care of financial affairs for the incapacitated person, and to manage and distribute the assets after death. Summer Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Desperate for cash and work, Nicolas Cage takes a gig to appear at a millionaire fan’s birthday party, only to be pulled into something far more dangerous and bizarre. “Unbearable Weight” is like a movie pitch that you would hear on Twitter or Reddit. From the well-loved actor playing himself to its “Paddington 2” jokes, it’s a movie that could easily be a disaster in the making. However, there’s a sincere charm to the film, helped mainly by how our leading man commits so much to this caricature of himself and his chemistry with Pedro Pascal’s excited but dweebish fanboy. There’s also some surprisingly smart filmmaking here, particularly in its editing style that seems to change scene by scene based on the tone. It’s a nice example of a film that has fun but doesn’t make fun of its topic, even if it does stretch out that main joke.
“The Northman” A prince of a once noble kingdom seeks vengeance on the man who killed his father and kidnapped his mother. There’s a sort of ticking clock that can’t be heard but is felt throughout “The Northman.” Each moment there’s the possibility of sudden chaos, terror and death for any of the characters. How the film plays with your expectations of something grandiose, only for it to be more simplistic and grounded, also really plays into the tense nature of the film. It’s delicious, watching Amleth plot every move against Fjölnir and seeing the fear and hatred in his eyes. Meanwhile, every other character is working on their own and constantly on their feet; and the characters act in ways you wouldn’t expect for their archetype, particularly Claes Bang as the villain. There’s a terror to the film present from Robert Eggers’ previous films but it’s primarily about the brutality of revenge and a cruel world. You will be impressed by the balance of scale and intimacy of the film, but still feel a sense of horror from what you watched. “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” The master of the mystic arts returns to assist a mysterious girl who is being chased by an evil force. Despite being his first directorial feature in nearly ten years, it’s as if Sam Raimi never stopped. The cheerful terror and insanity of his many works can be seen here; from laughing devils, creative editing and camerawork, grotesque visuals, and so much more. It elevates the film from a very weak script, one that’s mostly guided by Benedict Cumberbatch’s quality performance as the titular character, but unfortunately leaves the other characters out. This film doesn’t leave much room for the viewer to figure things out for themselves and could have resulted in a worse movie in the hands of a different director. But there are some themes of happiness and responsibility present here that are thankfully explored, making Strange and Wanda Maximoff’s journeys feel fulfilling and even heart-

breaking. I’ve been down on the MCU a lot lately, but “Multiverse Of Madness” is mostly a welcome change of pace. “Watcher” A woman who moves to Bucharest grows a fear of her neighbor who may or may not be a killer. Chloe Okuno is going to be a director to keep an eye on if her debut film “Watcher” is anything to go on. The gloomy, muted streets of Bucharest are often photographed as being populated with few or no extras, adding to the lonely and hunted feeling our lead is given. It’s dripping with fear and in the film’s scariest moments we feel like we are there looking over our shoulders. Our lead in question is played excellently by Maika Monroe, finally given a truly great role since her breakout in “It Follows.” The real standout though is Burn Gorman, who despite not being in it much, is terrifying and delivers one of the best monologues of the year. It takes a bit to get going, but those who stick around will be rewarded with one of the best thrillers of the year.
