Success For Solar Power Begins With People Power
L
eaders in the fight for clean power sought to lift fledgling hopes for a national greenenergy transition after the disappointing failure of Build Back Better, a broad federal spending package that would have included investments in renewable technologies. Speakers at the virtual rally, hosted over Zoom by the Solar Energy Industry Association on January 25, sounded notes of excitement and frustration that should resonate with Arizonans, who have seen the prospects of solar power rise and fall on the whims of politics. It’s worth tuning into national-level discussions like these, which show how closely our own state’s energy future is bound up with that of the nation at large. The two senators who led the discussion, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, emphasized the personal stakes involved in the fight for renewable energy, pointing to the year-round wildfire season in New Mexico and the need to keep energy prices low for people in North Minneapolis, who have borne the brunt of fossil-fuel pollution. Arizonans can certainly relate. Climate change, which is caused by worldwide pollution of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other compounds released through burning fossil fuels, has been making wildfires larger and more destructive, the “Arizona Republic” reported in 2020. The proliferation of blazes has spread resources thin and even challenged the effectiveness of established firefighting techniques, Victor Morfin, a fuels specialist for Coconino National Forest, told “The Guardian” newspaper in 2021. “Climate change has thrown us into a tailspin,” Morfin told “The Guardian.” “We are having an unprecedented low success rate in our initial attempts to control the fires with strategies that have historically brought results.” The increasing dryness, a major contributor to the wildfires, is itself a source of pain. Arizona has been in drought since 1996, with 19 of those years bringing below-average precipitation and every year except 1998 having above-average temperatures, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Seventy-five percent of the American West is in severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a partnership between the U.S. government and the University of Nebraska. The years from 2000 to 2021 are the driest period since 800 A.D., with climate change driving 40 percent of the dryness, UCLA climate scientist A. Park Williams told the :New York Times,: explaining the results of a recent treering study. The effects of this meteorological phenomenon are not just academic. Among the Arizonans facing immediate consequences are farmers, whose access to Arizona’s dwindling reservoirs is being slashed or cut off. Switching to renewable energy sources like solar helps alleviate the state’s water shortage in two ways. First, by generating its own clean energy and reducing its demand for carbonintensive power, a family causes less heat-trapping gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in less atmospheric warming and, therefore, less intense drought conditions for
Arizona and other southwestern states. Second, a single Arizona household can save 10,000 gallons of water (the amount that would be used by a traditional power plant to serve that house) by switching to solar, according to a 2015 study by Herb Guenther, former director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources. Energy prices are perhaps the most pressing concern for most Arizona homeowners, a bitter irony given the state’s abundant supply of one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future. Economic researcher Bjorn Lomborg warned in a “Wall Street Journal” commentary article earlier this year that the worldwide push to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions would cause continuing increases in energy prices around the world, including in the United States. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing throughout the year at about a 3.4 percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Fortunately, there are ways for Arizonans to fight back against rising prices. One way is to take advantage of the government’s existing clean energy initiative by securing a federal tax credit at the current rate of 26 percent of the cost of a solar system. The credit drops to 22 percent for systems in operation starting 2023, so interested homeowners shouldn’t wait too long. He explained how bipartisan, grassroots organizing drove the creation of clean energy policy in states around the country and ultimately led to the inclusion of strong federal investments in the current president’s infrastructure plan. Arizona Rodeo Debuts New Specialty License Plate
New Plate Honors the State’s Rodeo History, Just in Time for the Scottsdale Rodeo By Doug Pacey, ADOT Communications DAVE ALFORD HAS BEEN AROUND THE RODEO NEARLY HIS ENTIRE LIFE. Now 68-years-old, Alford, the general manager of Rodeo Scottsdale, was instrumental in the creation of the Arizona Rodeo specialty license plate. “From fans to contestants, there are many people that will
get this plate and they’ll all be helping a good cause,” he says. “And rodeo people haul a lot of things. I’ve already heard from people who say they’re going to put the rodeo plate on their trailers.” The Arizona Rodeo specialty plate just debuted and costs $25 upon initial application and $17 from each plate goes to promote, educate, and preserve the history of rodeo in Arizona. And there’s a lot of rodeo history in Arizona. Alford points out that the two oldest rodeos in the world – Payson’s World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo and Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo – are in Arizona, and rodeos in Scottsdale, Tucson and Yuma have occurred for nearly a combined 250 years. “There’s a lot of history of rodeo in Arizona and we wanted to put it on a license plate and share it,” he says. initial application, of which $17 goes to a designated charitable organization. Personalization can be added for an additional $25 per year. The Arizona Gold Mining Experience features the mine, a tram, a crusher and the 10-stamp mill as part of a 90-minute fascinating demonstration. The Arizona Gold Mining Experience runs the second Saturday of every month through May from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. All these events happen at the Cave Creek Museum, located at 6140 E. IN A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR, THE SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA. When the country tunes in on Feb. 12, 2023, to take in one of the world’s most popular sporting events, it will enjoy the fruits of a Herculean effort that has been in the works since the spring of 2018. Recently, the host committee board of directors held a “kickoff the countdown” event, marking the official beginning of the year-long promotional campaign for Super Bowl LVII. “Our mission is to make sure that while we have the world’s attention, to tell the best story possible about Arizona,” Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee president David Rousseau says. “It’s incumbent upon everybody, the hotel community, the municipalities, certainly the business community in addition to the Cardinals organization, to put on an incredible show. It’s one that we’re proud of and I think has everything to do with the fact that we’re back here.” The event was highlighted by the announcement that former Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will serve as the executive chair of the committee’s board of directors. Fitzgerald not only
starred on the field for many seasons with the Cardinals, he also endeared himself to the community with his charity work and charisma. Although he no longer suits up on Sundays, it’s fitting that Fitzgerald will play a prominent role in an event of this magnitude.

It’s an event that could greatly benefit the state’s economy. Gov. Doug Ducey offered a positive outlook not just on the prospect of hosting another successful Super Bowl, but on the state’s financial health as a whole.
While the macroeconomic boom grabs headlines, the benefit of hosting the Super Bowl is felt at even the smallest levels of local economies. The host committee is introducing the Business Connect program, which will provide event-ready businesses in Arizona the opportunity to compete for contracted work tied to the Super Bowl and its parallel events.
“Today our economy is wide open. The best restaurants, hotels, resorts and small businesses are in full operation.” Ducey says. “Last year we modernized our state gaming compact amendment, which means visitors can place bets on the Super Bowl and other sports here in Arizona. This all means very exciting things for our economy. The Super Bowl is a force multiplier for economic development.” Arizona’s two other NFL title games in the 21st century, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, generated thousands of visitors and millions of dollars. The ‘08 game accounted for an economic impact of over $500 million, according to a 2008 study by economists at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business. The 2015 game brought in 120,000 visitors

“That Super Bowl in 2015 remains the most watched United States television show in history,” Ducey says. “I think we can break our own record next year.”
“The Business Connect program supports minority-owned businesses, womenowned businesses, LGBTQ businesses and veteran-owned businesses,” committee chair Jay Perry says. “It’s a terrific partnership between the NFL, the host committee, our local partners and local Arizona businesses.” The program is aimed at businesses that have at least 51% minority, female, LGBTQ or veteran ownership, and that have had a physical office in Arizona since 2019. The goal, according to AZSuperBowl.com, is to provide a supplier diversity initiative to the Super Bowl business landscape.
Super Bowl LVII will mark the fourth time the Grand Canyon state has hosted the championship game, and the third at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Only Miami (11), New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (seven) and Tampa Bay (five), have hosted more Super Bowls. With the emergence of new luxury stadiums in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the competition to host football’s blue ribbon prize is only going to get stiffer. Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium hosted February’s Super Bowl, while Las Vegas has already landed the Pro Bowl and NFL Draft. “When we won this bid, there certainly wasn’t a stadium built in Las Vegas,” Cardinals Owner and President Michael Bidwill says. “They’re now hosting not only the Pro Bowl but also the draft, so Vegas is a new competitor. We’ve got L.A, New Orleans, South Florida, so we have to continue to invest in the stadium and invest in the infrastructure that makes us a great destination for these mega events.” It takes a village to host a Super Bowl, and if the track record of this committee is any indication of what’s to come, Super Bowl LVII will be a well-oiled machine. The group was preparing “Broadway Bound” when the pandemic began in 2020, forcing the cancellation of live concerts until last year. Upscale Singers returned to the stage for two wellattended Christmas concerts and now the singers finally get to share the fun music and choreography of their spring shows. “We are an eager group,” Director Margaret Watson says. “We wanted to perform this show two years ago, and now we’re able to. It was fun two years ago and it’s even more fun now.” The music selection will be particularly fun for the audience, according to Watson. Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children Hosts Two Upcoming Fundraisers Events on March 5 and April 1-2 Benefit the Local Nonprofit

he Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC) and Volanti are rolling out the yoga mats for a fundraising event with host, local fitness instructor Sofia Demski, on Saturday, March 5 at Voltanti Scottsdale located inside the Scottsdale Airport. “We are so grateful to have local community partners, Sofia Demski and Volanti Scottsdale, understand and support our mission,” says Chrisie Funari, president and founder of ACFC. Yoga goers will join Sofia Demski for an 8:45 a.m. class followed by priority seating at Volanti’s popular Sunday morning brunch. Ticket holders will receive a complimentary drink after class as well as entry into an exclusive raffle with prizes from Lululemon, Gooder Goods Café, Puro Tequila, and more. Tickets are on sale for $25 and will include the yoga session, a

The annual golf tournament is hosted by the Londen family who lost their father Tom to cancer. The event helps spread awareness and raise money for children with cancer. The event kicks off Friday, April 1 with an evening reception at Talking Stick Resort, which is free to attend. The reception will include a charity auction, raffle prizes, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The golf tournament takes
place on Saturday, April 2 at the Talking Stick Golf Club, located at 9998 E. iGi’s Playhouse, a one-of-a-kind achievement center for individuals with Down syndrome, their family, and the community, is thrilled to announce the opening of the GiGiFIT Studio. This program is designed for children and adults with Down syndrome to help them improve low muscle tone that starts at birth. GiGiFIT will be offered to all ages in a newly acquired studio located right next to GiGi’s Playhouse in Scottsdale. “We are so excited to be opening the GiGiFIT Studio,” says Robin Lea-Amos, executive director of GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix/Scottsdale. “We have been aiming to build a fitness studio for some time to offer our community more fitness classes and promote health, socialization and leadership opportunities. amelot Homes recently closed on the purchase of three parcels of land in Scottsdale with plans to break ground this year on three new luxury communities with a combined total of 29 homes – Aura, The Collection, and Legacy at DC Ranch.

hen you’re selling any item, you usually want to sell it for the greatest profit possible. That happens when there’s a strong demand and a limited supply for that item. In the real estate market, that time is right now. If you’re thinking of selling your house this year, here are two reasons why now is the time to list. 1. DEMAND IS VERY STRONG THIS WINTER. In the real estate industry, spring (which technically doesn’t start until March 20), is traditionally the “hottest” time of the year for home buyers and sellers. But, this traditionally busy season started early this year, according to the “Inman News,” a leading real estate news source for real estate agents. “Home shopping season appears to already be in full swing,” cites a recent article. That claim is backed up with recent data released by ShowingTime. The ShowingTime Showing Index tracks the average number of monthly buyer showings on active residential properties, which is a highly reliable leading indicator of current and future trends for buyer demand.
2. HOUSING SUPPLY IS EXTREMELY LOW. Each month, Realtor.com releases data on the number of active residential real estate listings (listings currently for sale). Their most recent report reveals the latest monthly number is the lowest we’ve seen in any January since 2017. But, in Scottsdale North, we have the lowest number of active listings ever. And don’t forget, the best time to sell an item is when there’s a limited supply of it available. Supply has never been more limited than it is right now. EVEN THOUGH SUPPLY IS AT A HISTORIC LOW, HOME SALES ARE AT A 15-YEAR HIGH According to the latest Existing Home Sales Report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), existing home sales totaled 6.12 million in 2021 – the highest annual level since 2006. This indicates that the market is hot, and homeowners are in a fantastic position to sell now, while demand is high. NAR also reports available listings by calculating the current months’ supply of inventory. “Months’ supply of inventory refers to the number of months it would take for the current inventory of homes on the market to sell given the current sales pace.” The current months’ supply is 1.8, the lowest ever reported. Here in Scottsdale North, the market is so hot that we must go to “Days’ Supply of Inventory” rather than “Months’ Supply of Inventory.” Below is an example chart of five recent days of supply in Scottsdale North.
The latest ShowingTime index reveals last December was the most active December in five years. As the data indicates, buyers are very active this winter. Last December saw even more showings than December of 2020, which was already a stronger than usual winter. Those are national statistics. This trend is much more pronounced in Scottsdale North due to the seasonality of our winter visitors. And remember – you want to sell something when there’s a strong demand for that item. The ratio of buyers to sellers favors homeowners right now to a greater degree than at any other time in history. Buyer demand is high, and supply is low. If

hen I was two, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad flew cross country, and my mom decided to drive me and my sisters. I was a toddler, and my sisters were young kids, so this was quite the endeavor considering we had no cell phones, no Google, and no navigation. My mom somehow planned and mapped everything to a tee. Fast forward more than 30 years and we have everything at our fingertips. Somehow that go-getting travel gene runs in my blood, so our family’s motto is to “take the trip.” If you’re planning a family trip, here are some travel hacks for hitting the open road. USE APPS. If you’re traveling to national parks, there’s a cool app called GyPSY Guide. The narrated driving tour app uses your location to automatically play entertaining and educational commentary about your location (like notable areas in Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc.). It’s interesting for truly learning about the areas you’re exploring. GO BACK TO THE BASICS. When we were young, we occupied
ourselves in the car with a notebook and crayons. As simple as it sounds, get word search books, Mad Libs, crosswords puzzles, and similar activities for kids. It’s easy, affordable, and a stimulating way to keep long drives screen-free. CREATE A CAR SCHEDULE. I have three young boys and I’m admittedly not a fan of the iPad. On trips, I often drive nine or more hours at a time, so I try to create some sort of plan. For example, the first hour we listen to different genres of music, then they watch a DVD, the next hour is quiet time, coloring time, etc. I also love conversation starter cards for families. Check out Table Topics; they give families ideas/topics to discuss. DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. The pandemic has changed the travel industry. Spend time pre-planning and pack plenty of masks and hand sanitizer as pandemic restrictions depend on location. You might also need to make reservations at places that didn’t require them in the past. PREP A LAP DESK. For comfort in coloring, buy a cheap lap desk, making it easy for kids to write (or even eat) on the road. I put a stickable white board on ours because kids love
writing with erasable markers, and for littles, it’s a fun way to practice writing and spelling skills. BRING SELECT TOYS. I’m very picky about the toys I bring on vacation. I’m all about versatile and compact entertainment that will occupy them for hours at a time. What I’m loving lately (all affordable): the Plus Plus travel pack, Stickers by Number, and Kanoodle. I also suggest getting a travel journal for kids. GET YOUR KIDS TRAVEL BLOGGING. V-tech has a great Kidi Cam that doubles as a selfie stick and all-in-one editor. My older boys love creating their own movies, doing hotel tours of the properties we visit, and snapping photos of their favorite activities. It’s a great way to encourage kids to document your family trips. REDUCE YOUR CARLOAD BY OPTING TO RENT ALONG THE WAY. Going to the beach? Instead of schlepping your chairs and umbrellas, most beach towns offer rentals, and many resorts offer such amenities for free. OPT FOR LAUNDRY SERVICE. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry we acquire along the way, but
I discovered many online services that offer pick-up and next day delivery, even to hotels. It’s usually under $100 for two to three loads and it makes things a lot less stressful (and dirty!). PLAN ONE MAJOR ACTIVITY PER DAY. This way, you have one thing to check off your daily list while allowing room for flexibility. We often get caught up with schedules that vacations seem rushed. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A PLAYGROUND. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a new place, found a playground, and became “mom of the year” by discovering new play structures for my kids to burn energy on. hose of us with pets consider them members of our family. Along with the rest of the family, we need to make sure our pets are cared for when we can no longer do the job. How do we do this with our estate planning? It can be complicated or simple, depending on you, your pet and what you want. A pet trust is one way to take care of a pet. The wealthy and famous often do this. The widow of the Star Trek creator left $4 million for their dogs and $1 million for their caretaker. Oprah Winfrey is rumored to have established a pet trust for her beloved dogs, setting aside $30 million for them. Pet trusts are real and ordinary people (and their pets) can benefit from the Arizona law allowing trusts to be set up for pets. A pet trust can be especially helpful if you have a pet that can live a long time, like a tortoise. A friend of mine has a tortoise named Pepe who could live for 100 years. A cockatoo can live as long as 60 years. When your pets could easily outlive you, you should plan for them to be adopted by the right people and provide the money for their care. Your pet may also be very expensive to
keep. One example is the horse, which requires more time and money than most dogs or cats. A pet trust can be a great way to assure both that the money you leave is really used for the care of your pet, and to provide for the succession of caregivers. The pet trust allows you to provide money for the animal as well as detailed requirements for their care – what veterinarian to use, what food they should eat, and even requirements for grooming, walks or car rides. The pet trust can be created as a separate trust or created within your own revocable living trust. It can also be simpler, with a straightforward designation of a caregiver and a cash gift to go with each pet for their care. We often also include directions to the trustee to find a suitable new home if the original caregiver is not available. However you wish to provide for your pets, it is important to put the instructions into a binding plan. Having a plan in place for your assets, your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind. REDUCE YOUR IN-HOME ALLERGENS We are exposed to many allergens in our home. I recommend purchasing a good quality HEPA air purifier and running it 24/7 during allergy season (I run mine year-round). Allergen exposure is especially high when we are sleeping, so having it in the bedroom is beneficial. Just make sure to change and clean the filters regularly.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIFESTYLE Allergy symptoms originate from underlying inflammation and an overreaction in the body. Any additional factors that cause inflammation in the body may worsen symptoms. This can include foods, chemicals, and stress. By reducing your toxic load, your body can better handle the allergens.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM If you suffer from allergies, you may be more prone to illnesses such as sinus infections and other respiratory conditions. The earlier you get screened, the better your chances are for a favorable outcome if anything abnormal is found. Initial screening colonoscopies are now recommended starting at age 45 and every 10 years after that until age 75. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, talk to your doctor to see if you should be screened sooner or more frequently.

Alexander Lee, MD, a gastroenterologist at HonorHealth, identifies the top five reasons why you’ll want to add a colonoscopy to your to-do list now: 1. THE PREP HAS IMPROVED. Most people find the prep these days to be tolerable. You start with a clear diet, followed by the infamous jug of prep fluid – but it can now be split into two portions, instead of having to drink it all at once. This makes it more comfortable, and some brands even have flavors available for the prep.

IN THEATERS
“Sundown” A man stays in the country he vacations in after his family leaves. At best, you can say that “Sundown” is a lovely looking film with nothing on its mind that repeats itself endlessly to get past that 70-minute mark. At worst, it’s a shallow take on the wealthy’s fear of the “other” that shows you the protagonist destroying his life without actively challenging him. But realistically, director and writer Michael Franco just wanted to travel for a month or two and tried to stitch together a narrative. Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two usually fantastic actors, seem bored here, restricted by the lack of material. Repetitive storytelling is not inherently bad, but there still must be some brains behind it. There’s nothing to be found with “Sundown.” “Moonfall” A group of misfits go on a high-risk mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth. It’s called “Moonfall,” and it’s exactly what you think it is - a bombastic
film with not a lot of brains but surprisingly a fair amount of heart. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson carry the film, giving emotionally flawed characters that could be stale but are helped by the actors’ charm, which make up for the dull supporting cast. But what you’re here for is the spectacle, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint. It shows some visually impressive and exciting moments of destruction, with the most creative one being a car crash that happens on earth. It also has some of the most bizarre but weirdly intriguing world building. It’s a lost 90s film in the best and worst ways, but if this is your kind of film, it’s one to seek out.
“Jackass Forever” The “Jackass” gang reunites, with some new faces, for one last rodeo. “Jackass”

has gotten its legacyquel moment, and even as someone not as into “Jackass,” it is a great film. It clearly has that feeling of friends getting back together for the first time in years and they’re happy to see each other again. With their reunion we see the stunts and pranks they’re known for, managing to still one-up themselves in disgust, hurt and humor. The new recruits also are a lot of fun, fitting in with Johnny, Steve-O and company while bringing a new personality to it. Most of all, what’s surprising is how detailed the filmmaking is—really capturing each injury and hit in as much detail as possible and bringing a strange sense of scale. It’s an absolute blast of a picture.

A full half of the film is spent before the murder happens, which can make or break the film for some, but I believe it utilizes it well to establish our characters and make you suspicious of them. The lovely views of the Nile contrast the dark atmosphere well too. It takes a second to get going, but Kenneth Branagh’s second Poirot mystery is an improvement.
