Answer: The most rewarding part of my job is seeing how patients progress through their treatments and get better. The first phase of treatment can be slow moving. STUDENTS INVITED TO APPLY FOR MAYOR’S ABILITY AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS The Mayor’s Ability Awards scholarship committee, a pillar of support for students living with disabilities, is now accepting applications.
For 38 years, the Mayor’s Ability Awards scholarships have served a profound purpose—to provide financial support to college or college-bound students who have demonstrated outstanding initiative in living with a disability and who have shown a genuine desire to continue their education at the college level. The scholarships are sponsored through a partnership with the Gila River Indian Community. This initiative underscores the importance of encouraging education and fostering inclusivity to students living with disabilities, recognizing their potential and empowering them to achieve their academic and professional goals. “Education is the key to unlocking endless possibilities,” says Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega. “The Mayor’s Ability Awards scholarships uplift individuals, so that through education, their intelligence is not overlooked because of outer disabilities.” Eligible Scottsdale students can submit their applications through March 1. To ensure a thorough and accurate completion of the scholarship application, students are advised to seek assistance from their local academic counselor or transitional counselor. Participants have the choice of a 5K or 10K race, both culminating in a spectacular finish on the very field where the Giants will play later that day against the Chicago Cubs.

The Scottsdale Historical Society, in collaboration with the city of Scottsdale and the Daughters of the American Revolution Winfield Scott Chapter, invites locals and visitors alike to join in honoring the legacy of Winfield Scott. Waymo Accelerates Valley Transport with Autonomous Freeway Testing

WAYMO, THE AUTONOMOUS DRIVING TECHNOLOGY DIVISION OF ALPHABET INC., IS SET TO REDEFINE THE COMMUTE EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY THROUGH ITS LATEST INITIATIVE OF FREEWAY TESTING FOR ITS DRIVERLESS CARS. This groundbreaking move, aimed at optimizing travel times and enhancing rider satisfaction, is a game-changer in urban mobility. Waymo’s strategy of incorporating freeway routes is poised to substantially improve travel efficiency. The company highlights on their website: “Taking a freeway instead of a surface street in Phoenix can significantly improve a rider’s experience. For example, a trip from Sky Harbor Airport to the northern parts of Scottsdale can be 50% faster by taking AZ-101 compared to city streets.” The ability to utilize freeways will be especially important as they scale their operations to other cities. For this reason, they are laser focused on freeway ride hailing testing, according to their website. The initial phase of freeway testing, involving Waymo’s employees, is set to roll out in the coming weeks. This phase is crucial for gathering feedback on routing and overall rider experience, which will be instrumental in refining the service for the public.

Complementing the freeway testing, Waymo recently launched a curbside pickup and drop off service at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, currently available during night hours. This service acts as a stepping stone towards Waymo’s vision of providing 24/7 autonomous travel options. Waymo’s progression into freeway testing is backed by a stringent safety framework, according to the company. “We continuously iterate and improve our technology and operations through a rigorous process that combines structured testing, simulation, and public road operations,” their website states. This approach is fundamental to Waymo’s mission of ensuring safe and reliable autonomous vehicle operations. Waymo One, the company’s ride-hailing service, currently spans more than 225 square miles in the Phoenix area, including key areas like Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe. Launched in 2018, Waymo One has been successfully providing over 10,000 trips to passengers every week.

10th Annual Concours in the Hills Rescheduled New date for “Greatest Car Show on the Grass” now set for February 18.

DUE TO ANTICIPATED INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE 10TH ANNUAL CONCOURS IN THE HILLS, ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, FEB. 3, HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED. This muchanticipated car show will now take place on Sunday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fountain Park in Fountain Hills. Celebrating a decade of the “Greatest Car Show on Grass,” this event showcases a stunning collection of cars, motorcycles, and military vehicles, all in support of Phoenix Children’s. The event, founded by Peter Volny, a former advertising professional and avid car collector, has become the Southwest’s premier auto show. Volny’s connection to Phoenix Children’s as a childhood cancer survivor adds a personal touch to the event, making it more than just a showcase of automotive elegance. Since its inception in 2014, the Concours in the Hills has significantly grown. From its first gathering of 220 cars and 3,000 spectators, the 2023 event welcomed about 50,000 spectators, 1,200 vehicles, and over 100 vendor and sponsor booths. Peter Volny handed
over the event’s management to Phoenix Children’s in 2022, with the PCH50 auxiliary group, led by Dr. Peter Birkland, now overseeing its organization.
The show features diverse sections for domestic and imported vehicles, race cars, limited-edition exotics, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and a military attack helicopter display. Attracting major car clubs and dealers, the event displays vehicles collectively worth hundreds of millions of dollars, including individual cars valued at over $10 million. Admission and parking remain free for spectators, with an exhibitor entry fee set as a donation — $55 for vehicles and $35 for motorcycles. The high demand for exhibitor spaces, which sold out in the past two years, underscores the event’s growing appeal. Proceeds from the event benefit the Phoenix Children’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting over 170 family-centered care programs at Phoenix Children’s, a leading pediatric health system in the nation. Navajo Rug & Jewelry Show Returns to Holland Community Center Photos courtesy of The Holland Center THE HOLLAND CENTER IS PROUD TO HOST THE ADOPT-A-NATIVE-ELDER PROGRAM’S SECOND ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE NAVAJO RUG & JEWELRY SHOW FROM FEBRUARY 16 TO 18. Featuring over 200 traditional handwoven Navajo rugs, jewelry and crafts for sale, as well as weaving demonstrations, stories, cultural teachings, and raffles, the show will offer attendees an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind items while gaining deeper insight into Native culture.
The weekend will begin with a VIP preview and sale on Friday, Feb. 16 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., allowing attendees an early chance to view and purchase rugs and other handcrafted items before the show opens to the public. On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18, the show will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day; admission is free, and all proceeds from rug sales will directly support the weavers. In addition to offering a preview of the items available at the show, the VIP event on Friday evening will feature talks by weavers about the rugs they’ve created, Native music, hors d’oeuvres, and beverages. The featured weaver of this year’s show is Nellie Curley, who is known for incorporating cultural teachings into each of her rugs. Through her weavings, Nellie tells the Creation Story of her homelands and showcases various Navajo ceremonies. Several of her rugs will be available for purchase at the show.
The Holland Community Center is excited to continue its partnership with the Adopt-A-Native-Elder Program. Last year’s show – the first of its kind to be held in Scottsdale – welcomed over 1,200 attendees, with total sales matching some of the program’s most successful shows in other states. As a nonprofit organization, Adopt-A-Native-Elder uses an integrated approach that goes beyond charity to help reduce the extreme poverty and hardship facing traditional Elders living on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. Many Elders reside in hogans, without running water or electricity. For over 30 years, AdoptA-Native-Elder has served as a trusted humanitarian organization focused on delivering food, medical supplies, firewood, and other forms of support. The organization is committed to respecting the tradition and dignity of Navajo Elders, while building relationships that honor and serve them.

Scottsdale Arts Celebrates Color with New Exhibition

SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART’S NEWEST EXHIBITION, “COLORLOVE,” RUNS THROUGH MARCH 30 AT SCOTTSDALE CIVIC CENTER LIBRARY AND CELEBRATES THE POWER OF THE ENTIRE RAINBOW OF COLORS. Throughout history, humanity has examined, philosophized, questioned, and celebrated the full spectrum of color. Distinct colors can affect our moods in myriad ways: the peacefulness of blue, the intensity of orange, the wisdom of purple and the fresh promise of green. Wendy Raisanen, curator of collections and exhibitions for Scottsdale Public Art, hopes the exhibition will encourage viewers to think deeply about color. “I’ve always been interested in the psychology of color. Which colors make us feel energized or calm?” Raisanen askes. “We are all affected by color through artwork, our clothing, and our
surroundings. I love saturated, intense colors; they just make my brain happy.”
Artist and co-curator of “COLORLOVE” Lex Gjurasic is known as much for her love of color as for her artistic philosophy of “Radical Happiness,” which is, in her words, the “sacred act of choosing joy in the face of oppression and challenges.” “Colors and how they interact together has always been at the forefront of my creative process,” Gjurasic says. “While others may shy from the vibrational interplay of colors, I embrace that visual enthusiasm and lean into it. I can’t imagine a creative process without the patterns and interplay of color. For me, a world without color is a world void of emotion.”

THE ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA (AHAA) IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE RETURN OF THE 69TH ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE ARABIAN HORSE SHOW AT WESTWORLD OF SCOTTSDALE. The world’s largest Arabian horse show will run from Thursday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 25, featuring the world’s best Arabians, exciting competitions, a shopping expo, and more. “We’re thrilled to invite unique, beautiful horses from all over the world to join us in Scottsdale for the 69th year,” says Melissa Schalles, executive director of the AHAA. “If you’re curious about Arabians or know nothing about them, this is the perfect show for you – there’s something for everyone here.” The 2024 show will feature over 2,100 horses who will compete for more than $3 million in prize money. Event goers can look forward to a huge variety of classes where Arabians will show their versatility, beauty, and grace.

The immersive experience will return this year, giving attendees a hands-on experience to learn, touch and ride, hosted by HoofbeatZ USA, a Phoenix-based organization. The interactive experience, included in the event ticket, introduces newcomers to the world of horses and all the benefits they offer.
The 11-day show will start at 8 a.m. each day at WestWorld, located at 16601 N. Pima Rd., in Scottsdale. General admission tickets cost $15, tickets for seniors are $10, while children aged 12 and under are free. Military Appreciation Day is Tuesday, Feb. 20, when military personnel and their families can attend for free. Creating Colorful Heart Art with Chromatography
T
his experiment introduces kids to the basics of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures. It's a fun and creative way to learn about the science of colors, capillary action, and how different substances interact with each other, all within a Valentine's Day theme.
MATERIALS NEEDED • Coffee filters or white paper towels • Washable markers in various colors (including red and pink) • A tall glass or jar filled halfway with water • Scissors • Pencil • A ruler (optional) • A shallow dish or plate • String or ribbon (for hanging, optional) • A notebook and pen for observations PROCEDURE
1. Preparing Your Paper • Use scissors to cut the coffee filters or paper towels into heart shapes. • With a pencil, draw a small line near the bottom edge of each heart.
2. Adding Color • Using the washable markers, draw a thick line along the pencil line. Use a combination of colors to see how they separate differently. 3. Chromatography Setup • Fill the glass or jar halfway with water. • Place the heart-shaped paper so that the very tip of the colored edge is touching the water. Be careful not to submerge the entire heart; only the very bottom should touch the water.

This unique perspective resulted in a passion for helping families with estate plans that protect them. “Fifteen years ago, I began working on a few big estate fights – fights over money when there is no will or no valid estate plan,” Libby explains. “I saw families fall apart when the fight escalated, saw the hard-earned money of the deceased being eaten up by court proceedings and lawyers’ fees. Family is very important to me, and seeing families fall apart in these situations motivated me to begin working on the preventative side, looking to avoid those fights. For the past 11 years, I’ve focused exclusively on estate planning, probate, and trust administration.” Libby says that estate planning is needed at any age or life situation. “You need to consider your current financial and life situation as you plan,” she says. Estate planning is about selecting someone to make sure your estate is managed properly, first for you if you are not able to manage your own affairs, and then to be sure your assets are distributed the way you wish when you are gone. The goal is to create a plan and keep it updated so it grows with you. Your plan when you are married with no children differs from the plan when you have small children and grows into another plan when your children now have children of their own. A sound estate plan helps you to protect your loved ones and makes sure that your wishes are respected. What are some downsides to failing to do a plan? Many, Libby shares, and with consequences you may be unaware of or are unforeseen. “The state of Arizona has a plan for you – it’s written in the law,” Libby reveals. “Often, it is not what you would want to have happen.” She says a classic example is the blended family, where husband and wife have come together in a second marriage and have children from their previous relationships. State law says that assets held by a married person in his or her own name are divided between their spouse and their children from a previous marriage when they pass. “If the house is just in the husband’s name, on passing, the wife only owns half the home. Her husband’s children own the other half. If that isn’t what they want, they need to be sure that their plan avoids this.” While holding assets in joint tenancy is one solution, Libby admits, it doesn’t solve all the issues. “If the house is held jointly and the husband passes away, the wife inherits it by operation of law. have a plan in place, who inherits when she’s gone? Her children. Her husband’s children are left out completely. A good plan could make sure that the surviving spouse has use of the assets for his or her lifetime, and that the assets go to both of the couple’s children when the survivor passes away.” Libby mentions that she has built a great team to assist clients with wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, including Travis Meyers, a lawyer who joined the team two years ago. “The team is also ready to help if your loved one passes away without a proper plan. If your loved one left no will, or if they only drafted a will, the family must file a probate court proceeding, and the team can do that for you and guide you through the steps to wrap up the estate.” “We are happy to assist with probate matters, as long as there is no contest or fighting among the family members,” says Travis, Libby’s attorney in charge of probate and trust administration. “But your family will have a much easier and smoother time wrapping up your estate if you have a trust.” The team is also available to assist with the administration of a well-planned trust upon a loved one’s passing. Both Libby and Travis caution that do-ityourself estate planning may be unwise. And I can’t even play now.” THE ACES AND PAINS Jerry’s story is a common one in our office. He has done everything his insurance allows him to do, but he’s not making a “grand slam” recovery. Without proper planning, a court may get to make the choice.

Incapacity means you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Incapacity can result from an accident, or arise from health issues, dementia, or plain old age. If you are alive but can’t take care of your financial matters, you need the right legal documents in place to be sure someone else can. The revocable living trust is the best way to plan for incapacity. When you set up a revocable living trust, you transfer assets from your name to the name of your trust. While you are alive and well, you control your trust and assets as the trustee. You name a successor trustee to take over upon incapacity and on your death. That person steps into your shoes to take care of your financial affairs, without court intervention or constant reporting, court appearances, oversight, and scrutiny. All of your business stays private. If you recover your capacity to manage your affairs, you resume your role as trustee of your trust.

With a revocable living trust in place, you can have peace of mind that you will be taken care of, and your finances will not fall into disarray if you are incapacitated. Another consideration is who will make health care decisions if you are unable to make them because of incapacity. You need three additional documents to assure you will be taken care of by those you want to be the decision makers. Those documents, called advance medical directives, include a healthcare power of attorney (sometimes also called a health care proxy), a living will, and a HIPAA authorization. These important documents work together to allow your chosen person to direct your health care if you become incapacitated. Be sure you are keeping these documents up to date. The commandant and his wife treat their situation as just another mundane job relocation, and from their detached perspective, it indeed appears so. The film masterfully restrains itself from showing the atrocities of the camp directly; we only hear fleeting moments of horror or catch glimpses of trains bringing more prisoners, all playing out in the background, accentuating the chilling indifference. Interestingly, the film's muted colors paradoxically highlight the beauty that the family seeks, yet this beauty is irrevocably tainted by the sinister reality that envelops them, regardless of their apparent apathy. Sandra Hüller’s portrayal of Hedwig, the wife, is particularly
Michael Mann returns with a film that echoes his previous work, yet it reframes his signature style through a sporting lens rather than the action films for which he is known (Collateral" and "Heat"). The tension and fear surrounding Ferrari and his company are subtly conveyed, yet they erupt boisterously in parts, from early arguments to the climactic final race. Its destructive nature feels inevitable, and you find yourself anxious about being caught in the crossfire. The racing scenes, in particular, are harrowing, matching the intensity of any gunfight in his other films. Adam Driver's performance is remarkable, especially in an early scene where he speaks to his late son. remarkable. She embodies a detestable character, amplifying the already grim situation with her actions. By the film's end, you find yourself desperately wanting it to conclude, yet you remain captivated, unable to look away. “The Beekeeper” A man, who worked for a covert government organization, goes on a revenge mission following the death of someone close to him. "The Beekeeper" delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie, and this isn't necessarily a negative point. The action is genuinely enjoyable, with the stunt team executing some impressive work in the fight scenes. The film commendably embraces a level of silliness in its plot and cheesiness, reminiscent of old-school action movies like “Commando.” As for character development, it varies, with characters ranging from amusing to irritating. The film has a specific purpose, and it fulfills this role effectively. However, how much you appreciate it will largely depend on your personal taste.
It’s easy to label something as “brutal” these days, but Xavier Gens' latest action film, “Mayhem,” truly deserves the description. Over its 100-minute runtime, the film makes us almost tangibly feel the hurt and pain in its fight scenes. Every gunshot and bone break causes you to squirm, sparing no one from the visceral impact. Beyond the relentless action, the film incorporates a compelling noir element. It's not just an endless sequence of action scenes; it's the desperation felt by our lead character that adds depth. This sense of unrelenting panic never fades, enhancing the film's pacing. Once again, overseas action cinema continues to impress.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

I
s doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable. Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain. Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery. One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.” You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors. The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed. This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse. 2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back. 3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there. 4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work… 5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work. 6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique. Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What to Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse. Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby. Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved. Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back. Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active. How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
