“B
y 2030, here in five years, we’re going to have a potential population of 12 million people that suffer from atrial fibrillation,” said Dr. Ashish Sadhu, the first cardiac electrophysiologist in Arizona to perform a revolutionary new procedure. When patients have atrial fibrillation — a medical term for an irregular heartbeat — they have a five times higher risk for stroke than the average population. Since the 1950’s, the accepted treatment for AFIB has been Warfarin, a blood thinner doubling as a rat poison. Now, Eliquis or Xarelto are offered in place of Warfarin. However, any blood thinner comes with the same risk. “Every year that they don’t have a major bleeding event, their risk for a major bleeding event goes up,” Kim Krmpotic, a nurse practitioner specialized in electrophysiology, added. She works alongside Dr. Sadhu both in the clinic and in the hospital. Once someone begins taking blood thinners, she said, they take it for a lifetime. Common operations for AFIB involve radio frequency therapy or cryoablation therapy. This thermal approach comes with its own set of risks. When heat or freezing is applied to the inside of the heart, to treat the irregular heartbeat, there is a possibility of damaging the esophagus behind it. Now, however, a safer ablation method has been introduced. The Farapulse PFA system greatly reduces the risk of damaging the heart by using nonthermal energy. It sends direct pulses of electric energy into the areas which cause the irregular heartbeat. This procedure offers a safer alternative, especially for seniors, and expands the range of patients that can be treated. After any ablation therapy, however, the patient must remain on blood thinners. “What if we can offer you a procedure that can work on your rhythm control…and implant WATCHMAN for getting you off the blood thinners?”

Dr. Sadhu can do just that. He was one of the first to do a concomitant procedure which was approved in October 2024, and to implement Boston Scientific’s WATCHMAN device — a small, round object that blocks the left atrial appendage within the heart. The LAA is shaped in the form of a pocket, which can collect blood clots and cause a stroke. By closing this appendage with the device, it minimizes the chances of suffering a stroke and eliminating the need for long term blood thinners. Patients must be high on the CHADSVASC score — a system that ranks how high the stroke risk is — to qualify for the procedure. Dr. Sadhu performs a concomitant procedure, which combines both the Farapulse Ablation and WATCHMAN device. While the Farapulse system treats the irregular heartbeat, the WATCHMAN simultaneously treats the stroke risk. The WATCHMAN is inserted through an incision near the groin and is implanted into the LAA. After it is implanted firmly into the heart, and successfully passes a criteria, the patient could go home the very same day. While every procedure has risks, the WATCHMAN’s are significantly low. The latest device has a HEMOCOAT technology that promotes healing, so a layer of skin can grow over it and safely block the LAA. It also helps prevent blood clots from forming over it. When someone has “palpitations, they feel their heart skipping or racing, they’re short of breath out of the ordinary to their normal day to day activities, they feel that they’re sleepy all the time,” Dr. Sadhu suggests they seek out medical attention, whether that be their primary care physician, the emergency department, or a cardiologist. Deciding to proceed with an ablation or WATCHMAN is a big step. Kim Krmpotic highly encourages patients to talk it over with their families first. The first consultation with Dr. Sadhu or his nurse practitioner takes about an hour to talk about patient history, goals, and potential treatments. Each case is different and requires a thorough investigation before any procedure can be considered.

SCOTTSDALE CITY COUNCIL ADOPTS BALANCED BUDGET FOCUSED ON CORE SERVICES AND COMMUNITY INVESTMENT. The city’s Fiscal Year 2025/26 budget and five-year Capital Improvement Plan reaffirms the city’s commitment to responsible financial stewardship, world-class service delivery and strategic community investments. The $2.204 billion budget represents a 4.0% decrease from the prior fiscal year, and includes a $885.2 million operating budget, $947.7 million capital budget, and $370.8 million in contingencies and reserves, which reflect the city’s conservative approach amid economic uncertainty and shifting state tax policy.
The budget was built through the collaborative work of city staff and leadership, balancing organization and council goals with community expectations.
SCOTTSDALE CITY HALL WILL SOON IMPLEMENT NEW SECURITY MEASURES DESIGNED TO ENHANCE SAFETY FOR EMPLOYEES, VISITORS AND THE PUBLIC. The upgrades, which begin July 7, include security screenings at designated entry points, bag checks and an increased on-site presence of trained security personnel. Similar to successful enhancements introduced at Scottsdale’s One Civic Center, the measures will feature walk-

through metal detection scanners and handheld screening devices for visitors. Clear signage will direct visitors to designated entry and exit points where security screening — including bag checks — will be required. Security officers will be stationed at City Hall to support these efforts, conduct safety checks and ensure a secure environment for all who visit or work in the building. The timing of these enhancements was selected to align with the city’s summer schedule, when visitor volume and meeting activity tends to be lower, allowing for a gradual acclimation period for visitors to City Hall.

pple pie and hot dogs often take center stage on the Fourth of July, but the real stars are the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. They dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms — many losing their lives. That’s why Hospice of the Valley care teams are delighted to honor veteran patients in meaningful ways — whether that is a tribute visit by another veteran, a birthday party or even sharing a unique recognition for their years of service. That recognition came in the form of an emotional reception and book signing for Korean War veteran Bob Withers of Ahwatukee. He was excited to share his story with Imprints of Honor for the Library of Congress’ Veteran History Project. The proud 96-year-old Marine asked his Hospice of the Valley chaplain, Kody Kness, and daughter, Lauren, to attend the recent event with him at Scottsdale Stadium
to commemorate the 3,000th veteran interview for this national endeavor. “It was a great opportunity to honor so many veterans,” Bob shared. “I won’t ever forget this wonderful day!” Dorothea “Dolly” Dworkin, 102, was thrilled when her care team arranged for a tribute visit from volunteer Charles Roth, who is part of Hospice of the Valley’s Saluting Our Veterans program. The Phoenix resident served for three years in World War II, enlisting with WAVES — the women’s branch of the Naval Reserve — as soon as she turned 20. After her discharge, Dolly met her husband at a party for returning soldiers and sailors. They were married for 70 years and raised three children. The daughter of a WWI Navy veteran, she looks back on her military career with fondness, sharing this bit of wisdom: “We are so lucky that we live in this country. Anything that you can do, whatever way you pick to do it, you can make this country better.” When you’re a proud veteran and your 100th birthday lands on Memorial Day,
it calls for a celebration! Darrow “Buzz” Wehrman’s care team was not going to let this important milestone slip by unnoticed, so Hospice of the Valley nurses Sheri Pape and Carrie Aragon and social worker Jeri Reid planned a wonderful surprise party with fancy party decorations, cake and presents — and even a birthday hat to match Buzz’s shirt! “He makes a point of telling us at every visit how we are his friends,” Jeri said. “We just adore him!” When asked to share his favorite memory of his military service, the Mesa centenarian stopped everyone in their tracks with this amazing story: As he and his fellow soldiers were getting off the ship in the Philippines, they were told to go back — the war was OVER! “It was the first time we had felt peace in a long time,” he shared. That peace is something we all celebrate each Independence Day with immense respect and gratitude for all the brave veterans like Bob, Dolly and Buzz who make it possible. ecently, Gammage Auditorium hosted the prestigious High School Musical Theatre Awards, where Shadow Mountain High School’s NVAA production of Hadestown received the coveted “Best Musical” award for Arizona. Horizon High School also earned recognition, with Isabelle Ross receiving the award for “Excellence in Stage Management.” In addition to the “Best Musical” honor, NVAA’s Kayla Trevino, a talented student actress from the Hadestown production, was selected as one of three finalists to represent Arizona at the national level for the esteemed Jimmy Award. The Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, celebrate outstanding student talent in musical theatre from across the United States. aradise Valley Community College (PVCC) recently named Marisha Geraghty as the 2025 recipient of the Beth Koehnemann Community Impact Award, in honor of her outstanding contributions to student success, community collaboration, and educator development through the Volunteer in Paradise College Corps (VIPCC) program at Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVSchools). Named in honor of community trailblazer Beth Koehnemann — whose efforts led to the founding of the Northeast Valley Education Center (now PVCC) in 1985 — this award celebrates individuals who embody the power of education, collaboration, and service. Each year, PVCC recognizes those who, like Koehnemann, leave a lasting impact on the Greater Paradise Valley area through community-driven change. “Beth Koehnemann believed in the power of education and the importance of community-driven change. Marisha embodies that legacy in every sense,” said Education Faculty Meggin Kirk, who presented Geraghty with the award. “Her leadership and dedication have shaped one of PVCC’s most impactful programs, supporting both our students and our local schools. We are proud to carry forward Beth’s spirit through this award and through Marisha’s inspiring work.” Geraghty was recognized for her exceptional work as coordinator of VIPCC, a collaborative partnership between PVCC and PVSchools. Now in its 19th semester, VIPCC enhances the field service experience

for students enrolled in EDU 221 and EDU 222 by placing them in local classrooms for immersive, hands-on experience. Upper-division students also benefit, completing student teaching through PVSchools as part of their education pathway. For PVSchools educators, the program offers classroom support and professional incentives. Mentor teachers receive recertification credits, while PVCC students gain invaluable, real-world teaching experience, building relationships and professional networks that often lead to future employment within the district. “While there has been a longstanding relationship between PVSchools and PVCC, it was significantly strengthened with the creation of VIPCC in 2013,” said Geraghty. “Through this program, we’ve built a true strategic partnership over the past 12 years that provides meaningful field service experiences to first- and second-year college students who are exploring teaching as a possible career. It has been truly amazing to engage some of the youngest members of our community to serve public schools.”

s winter settles in, camping opportunities become more limited in most parts of the United States. However, for much of the South— as well as RVers and ambitious coldweather enthusiasts — camping season never ends. Throughout national forests across the U.S., year-round camping options are abundant, offering many amenities and accessibility options.
adventure you’re pursuing — whether snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or avoiding the white stuff altogether and opting for a trip south for warm-weather hiking — these campgrounds provide a range of settings to serve as home base during every kind of outdoor escape. Keep reading to discover which national forests have year-round campgrounds in Arizona.
Outwander used Forest Service data from Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest the Department of Agriculture to identify Arizona campgrounds in national forests available throughout the year, based on a national analysis. We looked at the number and names of available yearround campgrounds for each. National parks, from Yellowstone and Grand Canyon to Acadia and Valley Forge, focus largely on preserving natural and historic resources. National forests, meanwhile, are managed for everything from recreation and resource preservation to grazing and wildlife.
