August 31 Is Final Deadline for APS Customers By Erick O’Donnell As we pointed out in our last column, it’s a lot easier for members of a community to solve a problem when they have caring public servants on their side. And we’ll give credit where it’s due: officials in this state give plenty of verbal support to the idea of leaving unreliable, dirty, increasingly expensive fossil fuels behind and, in their place, powering Arizona with its own most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But actions speak louder than words, and earlier this month, the state’s utility regulators had a chance to show, loud and clear, just how committed they are to fostering the growth of Arizona’s grassroots transition to clean power. Unfortunately, the Arizona Corporation Commission voted to approve APS’s application to reduce the “buyback amount,” which is the per-unit price it pays solar-system owners for the surplus electricity they feed back to the grid. (The reduction—a 10% drop in the price that APS pays a homeowner for each kilowatt-hour put back into the grid— will become effective for new system purchasers who apply for a grid connection after August 31.) Just so we’re clear about the stakes involved here, this is a change that could push rooftop solar further away from being financially viable for Arizona families. For that reason, the new buyback rate, like any other key public policy, should meet two basic criteria: logical justification and fairness. It fails to pass either test. Beginning in September, APS will pay solar customers less for their electricity at the same time it’s charging customers a newly hiked rate. The commission approved a rate increase in May that allows APS to charge 30 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.30 per kWh) during peak power usage, a price that will dwarf what new solar customers will get by a ratio of more than 3½. It defies common sense to suggest that the ever-widening gap between the power company’s returns and those of its customers reflects the economic or technical needs of our energy system. “It is very difficult to imagine an argument that would explain how a commodity could be worth $.30 on one side of the meter and only worth $.084 on the other side of the meter,” wrote Michael O’Donnell, a partner at Peoria-based SunSolar Solutions, in a letter to the commission. “Nor is it reasonable that the same commodity would be going up 26 percent on
one side and down 10 percent on the other.” O’Donnell added: “This is especially egregious when you consider that APS has been granted a monopoly, while the consumer who invests in a renewable power plant is subject to a monopsony.” (A monopsony is the sole purchaser of a commodity in a given market.) This latest decision comes on the heels of a series of similar reductions over the past five years, which have strained the financial viability of rooftop solar. Before the commission eliminated net metering in 2017 (under which solar households sold their electricity for the same price at which they purchased it), solar customers needed to produce 100 percent of their annual consumption to end up with a monthly bill under $20. Subsequent rate reductions then increased that ratio to where it stands today, at approximately 140 percent, necessitating bigger systems and greater investment costs. If this latest reduction is approved, that ratio will further swell to 150 percent. (And money isn’t even the only constraint— roof space, unlike the sun’s energy itself, is not free or unlimited.) That burden cannot increase indefinitely without, at some point, turning a solar system into a net financial liability for a family rather than an asset. Val Berechet, owner of SunSolar Solutions, made that point directly to the commission during a public hearing earlier this month. “I think there is going to be a tipping point, where it’s not going to make sense any longer,” Berechet told the commissioners. “And I really think we’re getting to that point.” The change makes even less sense considering solar power’s dramatically lower cost in terms of natural resources. As former commissioner Bob Burns has pointed out, each solar system saves millions of gallons of water that would otherwise be consumed by a power plant—in the middle of a drought-stricken desert state. Furthermore, millions of people across the world right now are experiencing a heat wave that is unprecedented in its severity and geographical extent, a fact that should underscore the urgency of switching to non-polluting energy sources—fast. It’s getting increasingly urgent for the whole world to switch, and the same pattern applies for every household as well. Last month, Keim’s job took an unusual turn. On a hot July Saturday, Keim was removing moss from an area of the Arizona Canal on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community when she noticed a horse standing waistdeep in the water.
With temperatures approaching 110 degrees, Keim then contacted SRP’s Association Dispatch Center to advise them of the situation and cautiously approached the horse to see what assistance she could provide. After determining the horse was not alarmed by her presence, Keim managed to get the animal to turn around, but not up the ramp and out of the water.
“The horse was near one of our equipment entrance ramps and did not appear to be in distress and was even blowing bubbles with its nose,” says Keim. “It was a very warm morning, and I didn’t think twice about it being in the water as we often see the wild horses in the area enter the canal to cool off.” Keim left the area to inspect another section of the canal, and when she returned around noon to clear more moss, she noticed the horse was in the exact same location, facing the same direction – although this time it was further out of the water than before. “I hadn’t realized earlier that morning that it was

“I retrieved a rope from my truck and tied a large loop in the end. I was able to lasso him and pull him a few feet towards the ramp,” Keim says. “I teamed up with Chris, using the rope and the pole to carefully pull the horse and help shuffle his legs up the ramp. It took some time, but he finally gathered his footing and made his way safely up the ramp. Eventually, he crossed the canal

Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field Now Open with Guy Fieri’s DTPHX Kitchen + Bar
Freestanding entertainment destination boasts more than 20 betting stations and Guy Fieri’s first-ever full-service restaurant in Arizona CAESARS SPORTSBOOK AT CHASE FIELD IS OFFICIALLY OPEN. The two-story, 22,300-square-foot entertainment destination is located adjacent to Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix and is now the largest freestanding sportsbook in Arizona and the largest retail sportsbook to open in partnership with a major sports stadium nationwide. This new sportsbook and full-service restaurant combo is unlike any opened to date. The venue features a total of nine betting windows and 13 self-service betting kiosks as well as wall-to-wall flatscreen televisions, patio space, along with table and lounge-style seating on both floors with a total capacity of more than 425. Private space is also available to rent.
Barking Bodega, Desert Diamond Casino, and the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa, Guy Fieri’s DTPHX Kitchen + Bar offers scratch-made food, signature and classic cocktails, and an extensive beer and wine menu. The menu also features a combination of new recipes and Fieri’s personal favorites from his other restaurants, including the world-famous Trash Can Nachos ($20) and award-winning Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheeseburger ($18). “I’ve worked with the Caesars team for nearly a decade opening restaurants all over the country together. They are the best of the best,” says Fieri. “The idea of bringing this next-level restaurant concept to Arizona, a place
where I have showcased more than 30 restaurants through Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives over the years, was a no-brainer for me.” Caesars Sportsbook is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Guy Fieri’s DTPHX Kitchen + Bar is open Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. for food service and until 1 a.m. both nights for beverage service. The venue will also be open during D-backs off days and have expanded hours during football season.

FOR PARADISE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE LIBRARIAN SAMI LANGE, HER PATH THROUGH ART WAS NOT ALWAYS CLEAR CUT. Whereas Lange can’t recall a time in her life that art was not present, it wasn’t until her 30s that everything finally clicked, discovering an incredibly unique niche as a paper artist that has since stirred her inner passions and grounded her. Lange grew up in Northern California experimenting with different art mediums. In her early 20s, she worked for a skilled print maker learning the intricacies of the process and business. This led to pursuing her bachelor’s degree in fine arts in printmaking. However, Lange knew when she graduated that she did not want to pursue art full time and purposefully set out to create parallel paths between art and academics, which she has maneuvered successfully for the better part of 15 years.

Lange started her academic career as a student at Diablo Valley Community College in Contra Costa County in Northern California. While completing some prerequisites, Lange said she felt grounded and fell in love with her teachers. “It was clear to me, I always wanted to go back to a community college.” She completed her four-year degree at Sonoma State University, going on to earn her BFA, as well as two master’s degrees in education and library science. After multiple evacuations during fire seasons that began with the devastating 2017 Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa, California, Lange decided in 2020 to move her family

“When we evacuated, considering I could lose everything really put things into perspective for me,” she said. Although their home was spared, Lange began questioning everything including her art; reevaluating what was important, she was ready for a fresh start. “I took a long break from my art to figure out what I wanted to achieve with it,” she says. “I realized I needed to simplify what was needed from the work and lean into the idea that art can be a meditation for the artist and provide energy and joy to those that view it.” In 2018, Lange began experimenting exclusively with mixed media paper art, in which she cuts then ‘bathes’ printmaking paper for up to 24 hours to watch the dye colors take shape.
Each piece is hand cut with scissors, then stitched together to make a kind of paper quilt. The paper used is designed to be more malleable; a perfect combination between not too hard to cut and hardy enough to stitch together.

(double income no kids) life in which we’re intentional about projects we invest our time in, giving back to our community, and having the ability to travel while working remotely when we choose to. MY FAVORITE MOVIE IS… Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Extended Edition) as it has one-liners that remain hilarious over and again from an excellent cast. Far from his most well-known role, Paul Rudd’s amusing character Kunu steals the show.
HI, MY NAME IS… Eric Twohey I’VE LIVED IN THE DESERT RIDGE AREA FOR SIX YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… it’s outside of the grid of the metro area, among the natural Sonoran Desert landscape, yet is in good proximity to many of the large city conveniences, entertainment, dining, and culture we enjoy. I refer to this pocket of the Valley as “sneaky convenient” or that we’re “hiding in plain sight.” A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… helping to make fellow entrepreneurs’ dreams come true by guiding their growth through creative marketing that differentiates their business from the competition. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… Anthony Bourdain with his thirst to be a traveler and not a tourist, to authentically see the world and have real conversations and meals with people to better understand and appreciate their differences, all the while realizing how many of us want many of the same things. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGHT OUT LOUD WAS… a relatable conversation from a Joe Rogan podcast. THE PERFECT DAY IS… with my wife, traveling through one of our favorite wine regions, meandering through giant redwood trees and then vineyards, experiencing some tasty wines and a delicious meal, and making some new connections with others in the process. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… one that I feel deserves some more awareness in our area is the Desert Foothills Land Trust, which connects people to nature by working to conserve and steward sensitive lands for the survival of our Sonoran Desert. There are so many other amazing local ones to choose from, including the
chambers of commerce that I belong to and volunteer for, The Foothills Food Bank, Wild at Heart raptor rescue, and Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership (H.E.L.P.) with their Snackz program that helps feed and provides positive affirmation to hungry local children. MY LIFE IS... a work in progress and I’m enjoying the ride while continuing to pursue interests and causes that I’m passionate about. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my wife, close friends, and family who enhance my life in so many ways. Balanced Market? Seller’s Market? Buyer’s Market? By Holly Henbest, Realtor
O
ur “crystal ball indicators” from earlier this year suggested that we were heading toward a more balanced market, and sure enough we are heading toward a more balanced market and likely will hit balance in the short term. Over the recent few years, we’ve had extremely low inventory of homes for sale and extremely high buyer demand. We’re now seeing an increase in inventory and waning buyer demand.
with the bidding wars and “frenzy” mentality we experienced over the last year, and their mental fatigue coupled with summer temperatures created a natural time to take a break from their search. We’ve been referring to this as “buyer burnout.” Although those buyers may have tired of the situation at hand, those buyers still have investment and housing goals they wish to attain, and it’s predicted that we’ll see many of those buyers return to the home buying process in the fall.
Many people want to put the change in demand squarely on the change in interest rates, but there are really several factors, in my opinion, that are contributing to the waning buyer demand. First and foremost, this has been the first summer since the pandemic to see a significant return to travel and summer vacations. If you’re on social media you’ve probably noticed more pictures than ever of friends traveling to Europe and other faraway places than you’ve seen in years. Our summer months have historically brought us a decline in buyer activity due to the combination of high temps and vacation plans. Not only are people out of town and distracted by vacation plans, but more significantly, fewer people want to look at houses when it’s warm. Who wants to pack boxes and move when it’s 110 degrees outside? You may be thinking, “but don’t people want to move before school starts?” Let’s bust that myth now. No, that’s not a big factor in people’s moving plans. More often than not, people move within their school district, so moving during the school year isn’t an inconvenience. Again, people who have kids in school want to take summer vacations, so it’s tough to handle a move, all your kids home from school, and vacations during the summer. Once school starts and the kids are back in school, it gives parents an opportunity to think and plan their home and investment goals. We also live in a high demand area for retirees and vacation home buyers and this is not an ideal time of year for them to be here to visit or move. Again, they don’t want to get in and out of a car to look at homes and walk around when it’s so hot, and they certainly don’t want to move when it’s hot. A lot of people put their moving plans on hold over the summer, and the fall is often a reset to make moving plans and getting settled prior to the holidays, so we’ll likely see a bump up in buyer activity in the next few weeks. Second, there are a lot of buyers who became frustrated myhyperlocalnews.com
Third, some buyers may be impacted by the recent increases in interest rates. Overall, interest rates have been increasing recently, and despite seeing some blips of decreases, when the interest rate rises occur, buyers may not be able to afford their desired loan amount were their monthly payment to surpass their budgeted amount. Many buyers are needing to reset their goals. If buyers had been looking for a single-family home with significant upgrades, they may need to consider a home that’s slightly smaller or less upgraded to stay within their budget. You may hear people suggesting a plan to refinance a new loan later. While refinancing might be feasible if rates were to drop possibly and present an opportunity to refinance at a lower rate, our suggestion is that if obtaining a loan to buy, one should consider financing that is comfortably affordable. When the time comes that rates drop and refinancing is pursued, one may be able to increase one’s discretionary income rather than just get relief from a strained budget. Going forward with the expectation of a more balanced market, regarding home prices, Seller’s should not panic and buyers should not be hopeful that prices will fall. We aren’t seeing a shift in pricing. We are seeing indications that pricing will remain flat or realize minimal increases. With that said, we suggest that
sellers shouldn’t expect bidding wars and offers well over asking price. There will still likely be bidding wars and escalated offers in some circumstances, but they won’t be the norm.
Keep in mind that all those homes that sold for over asking price over the last two years reset the sold prices, so the baseline values of homes have increased. For example, if a neighborhood had homes selling at $500,000 a couple years ago and homes listed at $500,000 last year were sold above list price for maybe around $550,000, and then the next round of listings for sale in the neighborhood likely were for around $550,000 with a sale price reaching $600,000, and so on to a list price of $600,000 and sale price of $650,000; going forward we will likely see the same homes with a list price at $650,000 selling for around $650,000, which is still $150,000 more than those homes sold for a short time ago. With stabilized selling prices without a noticeable price drop, but instead with our expectation of a fairly flat to slight increase in selling price, we expect not to see the price escalating at the rate we saw over the last couple of years. It’s important to note that many economists are predicting that we’ll continue to see housing prices go up anywhere between 2.7% to 10.8% nationwide. The good news for sellers and homeowners is that values remain strong. The good news for buyers is that as inventory has increased you have more property listings from which to choose and less competition in the buyers’ pool, and buyers may make confident decisions without the expectation or pressure of a frenzy. “A majority of what I sell is American made. I feel it supports our economy and supports us. I also like them because they offer better warranties, and they support their products,” explains Bahoura, who focuses on beautifying customers’ homes with functional design. “There are a lot of things you can do in design that really have a wow factor in terms of when you take a picture,” she explains. “The thing is, if you’re living in the house, does it have function? I really try to thread the needle with clients in terms of looks and function.” Bahoura points to a design quirk in Valley homes that makes proper cabinet layout and design so essential. “At the end of the day, if you’re someone who uses your kitchen and you’re cooking and doing, you want it to be aesthetically pleasing, but you also need it to have function. In a state where we have basically no basements to store pots and pans, storage is at a premium. That makes the design of your kitchen and its storage capability very important.” When Bahoura moved to the Valley in 2002, she was in the granite countertop business and would go out to builder jobs and noticed their lack of attention in the layout, functionality, and design of kitchens. “They looked terrible with things in all the wrong places,” she says. After pointing out the design flaws and walking her clients through how to alleviate them, word spread, and builders started hiring her for design work. Soon, Bahoura was ordering cabinets for them. She decided to open Platinum Cabinetry & Stone in 2014. “I do the design work, cabinetry layout, explain cabinet features, provide 3-D drawings, and give clients ideas on how they can flip the switch on their layouts to make them more functional. Sometimes we go as far as to recommend taking down walls or relocating things. It just depends on the age of the house, its bones, and what you can and can’t do,” she says. From there, Bahoura goes through the lineup of different cabinets. “Cabinets are like cars, there are many makes and models. Depending on what you want in terms of quality, color, and design, cabinets all have different pricing. You work with the customer to get within their budget and still give them the

function and idea of what they have in their heads as close as possible to the budget they have.” It’s no surprise Bahoura uses a car analogy to describe cabinets. Her childhood was spent working on Soap Box Derby Cars with her father, which was the catalyst for getting into the field of construction. “We would make the molds and build the cars out of sticks and epoxy them together. There were shaping and design elements to the process. Then, I would sand, prime, and paint the cars. I was only 4 or 5 and my dad and I would try and create these aerodynamic shapes,” she says. Around 15, she progressed to helping her dad with plumbing and electrical tasks. When Bahoura started in 2004, there were contractors in Arizona who wouldn’t even work with her because she was a woman. “They would tell me, ‘Send your husband.’ My husband didn’t have anything to do with the business, but if I wanted the business, I would have to send him or send one of my workers,” she describes. Although woman-owned construction businesses have become more common, occasionally Bahoura still must prove her construction skills, even going as far as cutting a counter slab for a fabricator. “I had to work my way into gaining their respect by proving to them that I could do exactly what they were doing.” As her company’s name implies, Platinum Cabinetry & Stone also sells an impressive selection of quartz, quartzite, granite, marble, limestone, and soapstone. “We’ve had a full fabrication shop since 2004. ave Creek Unified School District is participating in the School Breakfast Program and/or National School Lunch Program.

As part of this program, CCUSD93 will offer healthy meals every school day. Children may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Reducedprice meals cost .30 for breakfast and .40 for lunch
To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households can fill out the application and return it to the school unless the household has already received notification that their children are approved for free meals this year. Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free and reduced-price meals for their children and what is required to complete on the application. Applications are also available in the front office at each district school.
Qualifications for children to receive free or reduced-price meals include belonging to a household whose income is at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines, belonging to a household that received public assistance, or if the child is homeless, migrant, runaway, foster, or participates in a Head Start or Even Start pre-kindergarten program. Household size and income criteria are used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits if the household does not receive assistance or the children are not in the other categories mentioned
Families can apply for benefits at any time. If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school. dySea Aquarium in Scottsdale asked kids 12 years old and under to craft an endangered animal made from recycled materials to celebrate Endangered Species Day and World Oceans Day. This year, 411 kids from across the Valley submitted incredible masterpieces using items such as cardboard boxes, egg cartons, paper towel/toilet paper rolls, plastic milk jugs, bubble wrap, shoe boxes, chicken wire, newspaper, soda cans, and plastic bottles. Every child that entered an art piece received a free OdySea Aquarium Admission Ticket and every work of art was proudly displayed at the aquarium for several weeks between Endangered Species Day and World Oceans Day for all the guests to admire! OdySea Aquarium’s Conservation Committee, comprised of team members from every department, chose some true standouts to win top prizes. The aquarium hosted the winners (four of the five winners; one was out of town) and their immediate families. as they were recognized for their hard work and effort! Each winner received a priceless, one-of-akind animal painting from either an OdySea African penguin or a California sea lion! The lucky winners were then surprised with a very special visit from Holly, an outgoing African penguin (an endangered species) that calls OdySea home.

High Schooler Logan Rose is Stepping Up to the Plate Again for the Third Annual Western WIFFLE Ball Classic
F
ollowing the success of the last two Western WIFFLE Ball Classics, its founder, 15-year-old Logan Rose, is excited to bring back the popular event for a third year.
the season called for something bigger and better, the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic at Scottsdale Stadium,” says Rose, who had help in starting the tournament from someone near and dear.
Rose, a Paradise Valley resident, began his journey in the sport by creating Big League WIFFLE Ball in July of 2019. In less than three years, Rose had grown such a dedicated following that in 2020 he decided to host a tournament for all ages at the Fenway Park of spring training, Scottsdale Stadium.
“My dad was a major help in starting this tournament through his past experience in starting various events. It was very helpful to learn from him and hear his input on the event,” says Rose.
“I was inspired to start the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic after creating a fourteam wiffle ball league in my backyard during the summer when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit. Playing wiffle ball on those hot summer days brought a lot of those players, including myself, so much joy that we were all disappointed when the season came to an end. The success of
For those who don’t know what the sport is, Rose explains: “Wiffle ball is essentially mini baseball with a plastic ball that can curve, drop, rise, etc., way more than a regular baseball. For the most part, rules and the overall format are very similar to baseball. However, some key differences include the field size and dimensions scaled down, a smaller and skinnier plastic bat, using a plastic Wiffle ball, and pegging runners with the ball.”
The 2022 tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 29 and will allow for up to 42 teams to enjoy a competitive championship tournament. All fields will be set up on Scottsdale Stadium’s main field, home to the San Francisco Giants spring training. Teams will be comprised of three to five players, each team guaranteed to play three games each. Games will last 35 minutes or four innings, whichever comes first. Then, 16 teams will advance to a single-elimination tournament. All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate in the tournament. The winner and runner-up will be awarded the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic trophy. “These past two years have been amazing. It has been so great to see so many people get involved in the tournament,” says Rose. “My goals for the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic include growing it to one of

the largest Wiffle ball tournaments in the league. I think having over 50 teams participating one day would be awesome. SCHOOL SAFETY FIVE QUESTIONS ALL PARENTS SHOULD ASK SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS

s parents, it’s inevitably on our minds, sending our kids back to school after ending the 2022 school year drowning in horrific headlines. Surely, we can’t help but ponder a Uvdale-like situation happening in our community, leaving us unsettled, worrisome, and nauseated. The experts at Pro Defense Advisors out of Scottsdale says 83% of attacks last five minutes or less; 44% end in one minute. In addition, the average police response time in the United States is seven to 10 minutes. Let that sink in. So, what can parents do to proactively play a role in ensuring the safety of local schools? Well, Pro Defense Advisors suggests asking your district and administrators five safety questions. Such inquiries will better educate parents on protocol, as well as encourage schools to achieve maximum safety measures.
HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS TO GET THE CONVERSATION STARTED.
QUESTION 1: Does your campus have a dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO) program? Why Ask: A dedicated SRO should be officed and assigned to your school for the 40-hour workweek and not split between other locations. The officer should have a fully marked patrol vehicle, usually parked in the front of the building. The role of the SRO is to be a dedicated security agent constantly patrolling campus. They also

have several duties other than security, such as teaching safety classes, increasing community engagement, and responding to regular services calls.
communication in a critical incident as well as the parent/guardian response to the scene, accountability of students, etc.
QUESTION 2: Has the school district conducted a full Threat Vunerability Assessment (TVA)? Why Ask: These assessments can be completed by the Homeland Defense Bureau of a local police department or private security consultants, such as Pro Defense Advisors. The on-site analysis provides a detailed report on campus threats and offer solutions to better secure the campus.
QUESTION 5: Does the school have a standard EOP for any type of emergency (attacker, flood, fire, etc.)? Why Ask: This plan should outline policy and procedures for the FEMA protocols. The Incident Command System (ICS) should be in place and the school staff should be properly trained. School staff will likely be the first and last line of defense for any critical incident at your school.
QUESTION 3: What is the school’s Lockdown Plan and Drill Schedule? Why Ask: A Lockdown Plan and performing regular drills, like fire drills, are incredibly important, as it gives teachers and students practice should a real-life situation occur. Food for thought: fire drills are usually conducted once per month, and the last child that perished in a school fire was 1958. Statistics have shown that no child has been killed behind a locked classroom door during an active shooting situation. What is your school’s drill and protocol?

QUESTION 4: Does your school have a Parent/ Guardian Reunification Plan? Why Ask: A Parent/Guardian Reunification Plan should be clearly communicated with parents/guardians prior to school beginning for the semester. This plan outlines

Valley fever commonly resolves on its own, but more severe infections require antifungal treatments by a doctor.
“Most cases of Valley fever go unrecognized and untreated, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” says Dr. Drachler. “About 60% of patients who are infected come and see a doctor, and of them, probably half of the cases I see don’t require treatment. In most people with healthy immune systems, treatment with antifungal medications isn’t necessary.” However, if your symptoms are severe, see your doctor to make sure your body doesn’t need help fighting the infection. TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT VALLEY FEVER “Once you’re infected with Valley fever, it remains in your system for life,” says Dr. Drachler. “Most people develop immunity to recurrent disease or progressive disease, but people with compromised immune systems can experience progressive disease or reactivation.” TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS TO MINIMIZE YOUR EXPOSURE TO THE FUNGUS: If you see a dust storm or receive a dust storm warning, head inside. If you’re in a car when a dust storm strikes, roll up the windows and keep the vents closed to avoid directly breathing the dust. Install HEPA filters to improve the quality of the air you breathe inside. If you’re experiencing symptoms that you suspect may be Valley fever, make an appointment with your doctor.

Is it Time to Update Your Old Trust? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
I
review many trusts. Some are quite old, and my client knows it is time for an update. Other times, they were done not terribly long ago, but the laws have changed. How do you know when it is time to update your trust? There are a couple of key dates that give some answers. First, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, to become effective in 2009. The Arizona Trust Code changed the law governing trusts in a substantial way. Thus, if your trust was done around this time or before, an update is in order. Another key date is 2012. Before 2012, estate taxes were an issue for many people. As an example: In 2001, the federal law gave each person an estate tax exemption of $675,000. That meant that if your total assets were more, your family might end up paying estate taxes of 40% on anything over $675,000. Older trusts had complicated planning to avoid estate taxes because of the low exemption amounts. However, you may not need that complicated plan today, because each person’s estate tax exemption is now over $12 million (but will be reduced to about $6.5 million in 2026). The old planning to avoid estate taxes usually involved creating a second, irrevocable trust on the death of one of the spouses. This was called “A” and

“B” trust planning. While the surviving spouse still benefits from both trusts, the irrevocable trust cannot be changed and has its own tax identification number and its own separate tax return. If you don’t have a taxable estate, the division into two trusts at the death of the first spouse may not only be unnecessary but undesirable. When we look at whether to update these provisions of your trust, we analyze all of this and decide what is best for you given your situation and how the estate tax laws impact you. In addition to the need to update because of new laws, some changes may be needed to your trust just because of the passage of time. Your children or beneficiaries are older. Maybe you’ve had another child that’s not listed, or you now have grandchildren to include. The people you named as trustees and financial agents may not be the best choice any longer. Your decisions on how to distribute your assets may not be what you wish now.

Elvis The story of the king of rock and roll from beginning to end.
The Black Phone A young boy receives calls from the dead after being kidnapped by a serial killer. The Black Phone does a very good job at managing to keep a fast pace despite its locations being limited. You’re enthralled by the imprisonment of Finney and his attempts to get out, while simultaneously seeing the supernatural side play out with his sister and her sort of detective story. All of this is obviously helped by the actors, specifically the child leads and Ethan Hawke’s rare turn in a villain role. But also, director Scott Derrickson gives the film the creepy, urban legend vibe that’s grounded by the 1970s setting. It’s the kind of pulp that still has some meat on its bones that was common from the horror genre 30 to 40 years ago, and it’s one any genre fan can enjoy. 28 • August 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
David Cronenberg’s return to movie making is well-timed, and the focus on pollution and climate change and how it will affect our bodies is a horror that’s presented as a morbid beauty from the perspective of our characters. Characters who will change their organs for art, pleasure, or to eat plastic, and each of the actors showcase those emotions from fascination to despair. Léa Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen are of course excellent as a patient-doctor couple, but Scott Speedman stands out as an odd, sniveling figure whose life and work is falling apart around him. Howard Shore’s booming score is the defining feature to the apocalyptic world that’s just barely held together. This is another reminder of what Cronenberg is capable of and how impactful his tales of human disasters are.
Visuals that showcase what might as well be from another world, but also a showcase of just how truly driven and passionate these two were—that pursuit of the discovery of something grand while keeping a loving relationship that still was a tightrope walk for the two of them. Miranda July’s narration is a perfect bow on top, to bring home the melancholic feel of it all. What a wonderful way to tell an underseen story.

The musician biopic has been done to death at this point, and Elvis follows the traditional promising start followed by struggles route. However, like Rocketman before, it’s elevated by the unique approach to it, namely in how director Baz Luhrman makes the film feel like a rush, like we’re inside Col. Tom Parker’s dying fever dream as he retells his and Presley’s story. Hanks is quite good as the devious total POS of a manager. Austin Butler steals the show as the title character in a performance that’s more resurrection than imitation. The over two-hour runtime does feel bloated in the middle section, though showing Elvis’ struggles with his aspirations towards activism makes it much more interesting, as well as the surprisingly somber note it ends on. It’s a nice reminder of a movie that shows how even the same stories can feel exciting with the right hook. Crimes Of the Future The next stage of human evolution through organ metamorphosis is shown in the stories of three individuals.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen home movies as beautiful as the Krafftt’s works shown in Fire of Love.
