PHOENIX RESIDENTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN GENEROUS IN TIMES OF NEED. In January 2020, the annual PointIn-Time Count (PIT) was performed across Maricopa County. The annual street and shelter count is an effort to learn more about the individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the county.

What is the alternative? Healthy giving, all year long. This is giving that takes the long-term needs of the individual and the community into consideration. The Healthy Giving campaign encourages you to direct your time and resources to community service organizations that prioritize building personal relationships with those they serve; relationships that can improve quality of life and can lead to housing, employment, and greater independence. This can mean volunteering or donating to groups that ensure your gifts are received by those in need and will have a lasting impact.

This year, 7,419 people experiencing homelessness were counted. Of those, 51 percent were unsheltered. The unsheltered count has been steadily increasing over the years. From 2019 to 2020, the unsheltered count increased 18 percent—a higher rate than the sheltered and overall PIT counts. Each holiday season we experience a rush of faith-based groups, nonprofits and individuals who want to help those who are experiencing homelessness. Food, clothing, and other supplies are often handed out on the streets. While this generosity is incredible, there are unintended consequences, including wasted food, unsafe and unsanitary conditions in neighborhoods, and fewer individuals turning to established nonprofits for services that could help them end their homelessness. City News New Resources Available to Support Small Businesses, Business Recruitment and the Hospitality Industry ARIZONA’S SMALL BUSINESSES AND HOSPITALITY SECTOR HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY HARD HIT BY THE PANDEMIC, WITH THOUSANDS OF JOBS LOST SINCE MARCH. To provide a boost to these critical sectors and the Arizonans they employ, Governor Doug Ducey recently announced $7 million to support economic recovery efforts. Over the course of the pandemic, the Arizona Department of Health Services has worked closely with the hospitality and tourism industry to provide public health guidance intended to limit the spread of COVID-19 and enable operations to continue safely. The Arizona Office of Tourism (AOT) has worked closely with state and national partners to provide up-to-date health and safety information to travelers and the tourism industry. “In Arizona, we’ve shown that mitigation measures work and can help our business operate safely — with public health the top priority,” says Governor Ducey. “Thousands of Arizonans employed by the hospitality industry have been impacted and displaced by this pandemic, and we continue to fight for them. Likewise, we know many small businesses are facing incredible challenges. As we make sure Arizonans have access to the social safety net, we also want to give them the opportunity to work. This funding will protect livelihoods, highlight the robust mitigation measures Arizona has put in place, and keep our economy moving forward.” THE FUNDING INCLUDES: • $3 million for the AOT to put toward a strategic recovery plan, promoting safe meeting and business travel, and working with hotels, restaurants, attractions and destination marketing organizations to help connect visitors to our rural, urban, and tribal communities; myhyperlocalnews.com

This funding comes from federal CARES Act dollars and is being allocated by the state. The funding for local chambers of commerce comes from the Crisis Contingency and Safety Net Fund, established in March through a bipartisan state budget agreement that added $50 million for Arizona’s COVID-19 response. Solar Must Be Installed by Dec 31st or Miss Out on 26% Tax Credit

rizona Home Owners have until December 31, 2020 to have a solar system installed and be “Operational” to qualify for the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC). If the system is installed after that date the tax credit will drop to 22% in 2021 and 0% in 2022. Is there still time for a solar project to be initiated and completed before the end of the year? According to Val Berechet, President of SunSolar Solutions, a local solar company with over 6500 customers in Arizona, it only takes one or two days to complete a solar installation. The issue is, it can take anywhere from 60 to 90 days from the point of getting a proposal to having the permit from the city and approvals from APS. So it is getting close to the point where that will become impossible to accomplish. To remove the uncertainty for their customers SunSolar Solutions will guarantee customers an installation in 2020 if they call for a proposal through October 2020.

In addition to the Federal ITC, the State of Arizona will issue a $1000 tax credit that can be applied to 2020 state taxes. According to Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA): If a homeowner buys the solar energy system outright (either paying cash or financing with a loan), they cannot use any commence construction safe harbor provisions. To receive the full 26% residential solar tax credit, the system must be “placed in service” before the end of the day December 31, 2020. It is not enough to have signed a contract, or to have made a down payment or even to have begun construction. There is no bright-line test from the IRS on what constitutes “placed in service,” but the IRS has equated this with “completed installation” in a Private Letter Ruling. The residential credit is claimed on the tax return for the year in which the qualifying expenditures are incurred, and the tax rules say the costs are incurred when the

system installation has been completed.The 25D tax credit will step down to 26% in 2020, 22% in 2021, and 0% starting in 2022. If a homeowner buys a newly built home with solar and owns the system outright, the year that they move into the house sets their credit eligibility. Expenditures are generally treated as incurred when the original installation of the solar energy system is completed on an existing home. However, if a new solar energy system is purchased in connection with the new construction of a home, the costs are treated as incurred when the taxpayer begins living in the home. QUICK FACTS The ITC is a 26 percent tax credit for solar systems on residential (under Section 25D) and commercial (under Section 48) properties. The Section 48 commercial credit can be applied to both customer-sited commercial solar systems and large-scale utility solar farms.

The residential and commercial solar ITC has helped the U.S. solar industry grow by more than 10,000% percent since it was implemented in 2006, with an average annual growth of 50% over the last decade alone. Congress passed a multi-year extension of the ITC in 2015. A tax credit is a dollar-fordollar reduction in the income taxes that a person or company would otherwise pay the federal government. The ITC is based on the amount of investment in solar property. Both the residential and commercial ITC are equal to 26 percent of the basis that is invested in eligible solar property. ith promises of speed and simplicity, companies like Opendoor, Offerpad, and Zillow popped onto the scene, offering to buy your house in just a few days, no fix-up required. For some homeowners, it was an enticing proposition: sell your house quickly with minimal effort. No repainting, no repairs, no remodeling. You just walk away from your home. There’s a catch, however (there’s always a catch). Those companies charge a fee that might be more than double the fee of realtors. And the sale price of your home could be $40,000-$50,000 below market value. Plus, if your home is in really bad shape, you still might be on the hook for some repair costs. As a home seller, your wallet gets hit three times. Ouch. That’s a huge financial blow

to absorb all for the sake of convenience. Some people might be okay with that. Not me. If sprucing up my house nets me an extra $50,000 at closing, you can bet I’ll be buying some rollers and paint. One of the biggest selling points featured by these disruptor companies is speed of the sale. You might not make a lot of money, but you could sell your home quickly. It seemed like a perfect option for anyone needing to “get out of Dodge.” Something happened, though, to the Phoenix real estate market: it took off like a rocket. Homes started selling for top dollar, and selling fast. Offers were coming in within hours of the home being listed. This eliminated the need for online real estate companies. Why sell your home at a discount when you could sell it just as quickly at full price? The market for these quick-sale online companies began drying up, leading to significant workforce reductions. A BRIGHT IDEA IN ENTERTAINMENT

n a brave new world, where the height of entertainment is seeing what recently dropped on Netflix, one Valley business is working to burst the boredom bubble — just in time for the holidays. World of Illumination — the largest drive-through animated light show in the world — has two Valley locations, each with its own unique theme. extravaganza, is located at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Both shows are a mile in length and feature millions of RGB LED lights, customizable to up to 16 million shades of color. The drive-through attractions also boast hundreds of animated displays and both shows are synchronized to popular and beloved holiday music.

Rockin’ Christmas also features DJ Santa and his sidekick the Little Drummer Boy spinning tunes for disco dancers. Additionally, a 500-foot long lit-up tunnel doubles as Santa’s magic portal. Because of the musical nature of World of Illumination’s Rockin’ Christmas, the show even has a brief breakout tribute to the music of Queen.

Those who go to the West Valley location will enjoy a holiday spectacular that showcases such elements as larger-than-life size boomboxes, iPods and jukeboxes.

“We are so excited to unveil Rockin’ Christmas — a digital orchestra built with state-of-the-art technology that will transport you into a dazzling world of visual arts and music,” says World of

This month, the company will be featured as one of only four in the country battling it out on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight. The primetime TV show airs December 16. For the time being, however, Arizona remains the home state of World of Illumination. Class Presidents Share Their Experiences as BGHS Bulldogs YAHIR LOPEZ, SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT, BARRY GOLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL As a class of 2021 future graduate, I am glad to say I am graduating as a Barry Goldwater Bulldog. Ever since kindergarten, I knew Barry Goldwater was my designated high school and couldn’t wait to grow up and attend high school. My cousins and siblings all went through Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) schools and they taught me to value this district’s education and the opportunities it would provide. Our parents weren’t able to attend school and have these same opportunities. Barry Goldwater offers some of the best programs in the Valley, and I couldn’t wait to take advantage of all of these opportunities. As a freshman, I was eager to participate in school events. I wanted to be part of student government, which was one of the best decisions I have made. For the past three years, I have held a president position in student government. I have learned how to work more efficiently with a team, how to improve my communication, organization and planning skills, as well as many other real life skills. Being a part of our student government has truly impacted my life. It has also filled my teenage years with endless memories that involve fellow

classmates. Another great program that Barry Goldwater offers is our Early College Program. In my sophomore year, I was encouraged by my cousins to enroll. This was a major accomplishment for me when I was accepted into a program that pays for a whole year of college.

It truly has prepared me for anything life throws at me. I have made so many great friends and have learned what it actually means to be a leader.

Last year, I was comfortable enough to come out to my friends, teachers, and the school. I have never felt more accepted and free. This school includes students from all races, and is inclusive regardless of skin color, sexual orientation, or religion. I feel well prepared to go out into the world, because this district and this school gave me an opportunity to develop my skills. I am so glad I made the decision to get involved on campus.

I have worked hard to make sure all of my classmates have memorable experiences here at BGHS. In student government we get to plan events like prom, homecoming, and assemblies. We are such a diverse campus and have so many different clubs for students to join. We also have our very own restaurant, Avenue 27, which prepares students for management jobs. We have many great CTE and fine arts classes that help students find different careers that interest them.

Family Local Radio Show Host Rich Berra Releases Holiday Books for Kids

ou hear him every weekday morning on 104.7 KISS FM’s Johnjay and Rich Show, but radio host Rich Berra is also the author of two wildly popular holiday children’s books. The Tale of Christmas Steve, released in 2017, and its sequel Christmas Steve Meets Christmas Carol, released in 2019, tell the story of a small elf named Steve and his North Pole friends. In the tradition of

Dr. Seuss, these beautifully illustrated hardcover books weave in subtle messages about relating to those who are different and not being afraid to let your talents shine. The books are available for $17.99 online at christmassteve.org as well as at Bashas’, AJ’s and other Phoenix-area stores. Berra donates the profits of the books to charity and has initiated a

buy-one, give-one campaign, where every book purchased is matched with a second book, donated to children in need. We caught up with the author to ask a few questions about his inspiration and plans for the future. Here’s the story behind the stories. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO PUT ASIDE YOUR MICROPHONE AND PICK UP A PEN? Well, I’d never willingly ever give up a microphone. Radio is my first love and I hope to be doing shows well into my mid-100’s. Part of being on a radio show involves being creative and writing is a similar expression. WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THESE STORIES? I’d make up stories for my kids at bedtime sort of on the fly. They remembered from one Christmas to the next that I made up a story about an elf named Christmas Steve. I thought I should write that down so I could remember for the next year. I started writing it, and it reminded me of writing song lyrics with the way it rhymed and flowed. A new book was born. WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART ABOUT WRITING FOR KIDS? I think there’s a subtle art to being silly and fun, and sliding in a message of hope and encouragement. You can’t go too far either way. They will sniff it out and hunt you down. But overall, it’s not that hard, probably because I’m

basically a 6-year-old with car keys anyway. WHAT DO YOU HOPE IS THE MESSAGE A CHILD WILL TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR BOOKS? You may not feel like you always fit in, but you always belong. Being different isn’t what holds you back, it’s what makes you special — great even. DO YOU PLAN TO ADD TO THE SERIES? I do. Whenever we read for kids in first or second grade, they always want more. Some suggest Christmas Steve visit other holidays. Why not? So who knows where Christmas Steve and his elf friends might show up next. WE UNDERSTAND YOU DONATE THE PROCEEDS FROM BOOK SALES. TELL US MORE. I didn’t want to just write a book and sell it. I wanted to see if a good story could also do some good. We donate this year to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley and of course to #LoveUp, a charity my radio partner Johnjay and I founded, which focuses on kids living in the foster care system. So far, we’ve donated nearly $80,000 directly from sales of the books. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO DO A BUY ONE, GIVE ONE WITH YOUR BOOKS? There are lots of kids that don’t ever get to buy books. We love our sunny, warm weather here in the desert and cherish our temperate winters. But for people seeking a brief glimpse of real cold weather and winter fun, there are many areas around the state where snow sightings are plentiful. Here are some of the best places to find Arizona snow.

FLAGSTAFF AND SURROUNDING AREAS Northern Arizona is known for its tall pines, beautiful mountain scenery, high elevation, and for having four seasons. Snow is pretty much a sure thing in Flagstaff every winter and this area is a favorite destination for Phoenix-based winter weather lovers. Here are a few of the best spots to experience your winter wonderland. Be sure to check ahead for weather and any restrictions before you head north.

• Snowbowl Ski Resort: A favorite for locals, this Arizona downhill ski resort is located at the top of the San Francisco Peaks. • Arizona Nordic Village: The perfect location for fun in the snow whether cross-country skiing or “snow biking.” • Snow Park in Fort Tuthill County Park: Stay in a yurt or a cabin and enjoy sledding and crosscountry skiing. • Oakhill Snow Play Area: A perfect place to play in the snow and slide down hills. • Elk Ridge Ski and Outdoor Recreation Area: Just south of Williams, enjoy downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. • Mormon Lake: Visit the Mormon Lake Lodge for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing along groomed tracks. WHITE MOUNTAINS In the northeast part of Arizona, south of I-40 along the Colorado Plateau, the White Mountains are known for being a charming, high elevation rural escape from the hustle and bustle. Nestled among the tall pines and mountain lakes, the White Mountains are famous for their outstanding winter activities including great skiing, snowmobiling, and sledding. TUCSON The tall pines in Northern Arizona are not the only destinations for fun and frosty winter weather. Lemmon’s Ski Valley provides visitors with a unique winter escape just 25 miles uphill from beautiful desert vistas in the Catalina Mountains. MORE ARIZONA SNOW SIGHTINGS Although most of the prime skiing and sledding spots are in higher elevations among the tall pines, don’t overlook some of the picturesquely snowy spots closer to home. Whether a blanket of snow or just a light dusting, places like Prescott, Sedona, Payson, and Globe get their share of winter weather. And most years desert dwellers make at least one quick trip to Sunset Point, just north of Black Canyon City, to spend a couple of hours in the snow.
