“Raven spent much of the time since her diagnosis in the hospital,” Tabatha said. “I had no idea how difficult it would be for her brothers, Roman and Taj. [HopeKids] provided a special evening for the two to spend time together that we could never have afforded with the increasing medical expenses.” Shortly after joining HopeKids, Tabatha couldn’t believe how incredible it was to meet another family with a daughter near the same age as Raven and a similar diagnosis. The two families met through HopeKids’ online forum and made a point for the two girls to meet once Raven was out of the hospital.
that understand their journey, and are offered at no cost to families.
“You would be hard-pressed to find anyone close to us who has not heard about HopeKids and the impact it has had on our life through this difficult journey,” Tabatha said. “Seeing and meeting other families through HopeKids has provided a lot of comfort in our hardest days.”

Each year in the United States, approximately 500,000 children cope with life-threatening medical conditions. These conditions affect the entire family with more than half of parents suffering from acute stress disorders and 80 perce of siblings having elevated levels of posttraumatic stress. “We love attending HopeKids events now as a family,” Tabatha said.” Spending this quality time together is important while Raven continues treatment for a couple more years.” Numerous studies show that hope can increase one’s overall ability to cope, and familial support in chronically ill children is vital. HopeKids understands they are not a cure for these illnesses, but they believe hope is a powerful medicine. HopeKids Arizona began in 2001 and currently serves more than 1,400 families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition. For more information or to donate visit www.hopekids.org.

All events are focused on the whole family to prevent siblings from being unintentionally overlooked, bring families together DEER VALLEY TIMES • November 2019 • 3

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON DVUSD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL #31 DEER VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BROKE GROUND ON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL #31 IN THE UNION PARK ON OCTOBER 3.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the school site located north of Happy Valley at 21st Ave. This new Union Park housing
development will have 1,100 single family homes and 1,100 multi-family units. As a result, a new school is much needed in this neighborhood to alleviate potential overcrowding at Norterra Canyon and Sonoran Foothills schools.
“This is an exciting time for our District. In Deer Valley, 95 percent of schools are rated A or B by ADE, and 41 percent of our schools are A+ Schools of Excellence. I predict that this new school will easily join our A+ Schools as soon as it is eligible in four years,” said Superintendent Dr. Curtis Finch. The new school, temporarily named Elementary School #31, will open in August 2020 and serve K-7 students in its first year. The school will grow to serve K-8 students in its second year. In the coming months, DVUSD will hire a principal, and that person
will coordinate the selection process to determine a name, colors, and mascot. This school will be 83,500 square feet and is anticipating serving 917 students. The exact school boundaries will be drawn and confirmed in the coming months. “I want to thank our Governing Board and Deputy Superintendent Jim Migliorino for their work ensuring we have a school for this growing neighborhood, and we will be ready for all of the children! Most importantly, I want to thank our taxpayers for supporting us by passing the 2013 Bond that is funding this new school, as well as projects throughout the District,” said Superintendent Finch. Approximately 30 million Americans have diabetes and of that 30 million, 1.25 have Type 1 diabetes. TruHIT is asking for a minimum donation of $10 to attend the class. The money raised will benefit JDRF, which is a nonprofit organization committed to finding better treatments, preventions, and ultimately a cure for Type 1 diabetes and its complications through critical research. The gym is passionate about the cause because one of their trainers, Lindsay Seltzer, was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes five years ago. Lindsay started working out with a friend at TruHIT six years ago and loved the concept so much that she became a certified trainer and joined their staff. She currently trains 15-20 classes per week. If you’re thinking about bariatric weight loss surgery, our team is here to help you reach your goals. Whether it’s gastric bypass, a gastric sleeve or another solution, we want to answer your questions throughout the course of your treatment, and after. We’re here for you.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding with the Lap Band® is also FDA-approved for weight loss surgery in people with a BMI of 30 to 35 who have at least one obesityrelated condition. Weight loss surgery is considered safe, but like many types of surgery, it does have risks. Consult with your physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.
“The community is very supportive and encouraging,” said Seltzer. “After my diagnosis, I noticed the HIIT style work outs and proper nutrition were the keys to helping me keep my numbers in check. TruHit helps hold me accountable.” Lindsay had a baby 18 months ago and managed to keep her diabetes under control through her pregnancy and afterwards. She credits her consistent work-out routine, eating healthy, and the TruHIT community to keep her on track. Lindsay says, “In the beginning, it was really hard to manage and figure out my life with diabetes. But then I switched my mindset and realized I need to use my voice to help others dealing with the same thing. I started a blog and Instagram account called @ type1bygrace to start the conversations and answer questions.” “Our fitness community has been

KIDS’ CORNER
GIVING BACK: THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING KIDS HOW TO BE THANKFUL AND GENEROUS
T
his time of the year, we stop to reflect on all the things that make us thankful. A roof over our head when so many are homeless, food in our stomachs when so many go hungry, and the love of friends and family when so many are alone. As parents, it’s so important to pass on our values to our children, and help them understand why we should be thankful for what we have, even when life has difficulties. There are many ways to encourage your kids to be thankful, but one of the best ways to show them why is by giving back to others who are in need. Here are some ways that you and your family can embrace the spirit of giving thanks and give back to people who are less fortunate than you.
You’re You’re always always set set for for aa sitter. sitter. (No really, we mean it.) (No really, always we mean it.) You’re set for a sitter.
DONATIONS AND GIVING It’s important for kids to feel like they are helping when you talk about giving back and being thankful. One way they can help is by donating old books, toys and clothes, and by helping you give items to people less fortunate than you. Let your kids help you pick out the items to donate and pack them up, then take them with you to drop off the donated items.
Here are a few organizations that collect special holiday donations in the Valley: • Salvation Army Christmas Angels • Toys for Tots • Food Banks and collection boxes at grocery stores VOLUNTEERING You can set an example of generosity for your kids by taking time to
volunteer with organizations that help others. Donating your time is a great way to actively demonstrate how it feels to help people in need, and will let kids gain a sense of pride that they are helping out. Here are a few suggestions for places to volunteer your time: • Local Food Banks • Nearby nursing homes and retirement communities • Community clean-up activities • Homeless shelters • Local churches
PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS Another great way to get kids involved is to participate in charitable events and fundraisers as a family. Non-profit organizations hold walks, fundraisers, and events to raise money
for charities all year long. There are really too many events to list here, but you can easily search by organization, date, or cause to find the activities that will work best for your family. Consider cause, distance, cost or fundraising requirements, time of day, and the day of the week when you do your research. There are endless ways to give back and tons of places in the Valley of the Sun that need your help. Do your homework, get your kids involved, and make it a point to give back and be thankful this year. We at Ladybug’s Blog (www. LadybugsBlog.com) are sincerely thankful for you, our readers, and for the opportunity to share information and tips for doing great activities with your kids all year round here in the great state of Arizona!

DVUSD’S SCHOOL MODERNIZATION AT HILLCREST MIDDLE SCHOOL CREATES NEW STEM LAB, INVITING CAMPUS
A
fresh, upgraded campus greeted Hillcrest Middle School students when school began in August.
“We have had a high demand over the last few years from our STEM program and had a high wait list,” he said.
The school on the west side of the Deer Valley Unified School District enrolls about 935 students in seventh and eighth grades. The campus upgrades touched more than 60,000 square feet of space. This was the first major renovation project for the campus since it opened in 1990. The $6.95 million project began in mid-March and ended in early August. It was paid for by the voter-approved 2013 bond measure.
The renovations included the creation of a brand-new STEM room and reconfiguring an old computer room to make a second adjoining STEM class.
“The Hillcrest Middle School modernization consisted of five key aspects: conservation, wayfinding, safety, security, and learning environment,” said Tyler Shupe, project director for McCarthy Building Companies, the general contractor for the project. The scope of the work included complete renovations in all classroom buildings, selective upgrades in the library, cafeteria and gymnasium and a complete modernization of the inner campus courtyard. Fire sprinklers were added to all buildings and fire alarms were upgraded. The administration building and classrooms received new carpeting, ceilings, paint, casework and LED lighting. The front lobby of the administration building was reconfigured with enhanced security measures and improved student/ visitor flow. The courtyard landscaping was updated with synthetic grass and additional sidewalks were added to improve student circulation between buildings, said Stanley Axthelm, architect for the DLR Group. One of the biggest priorities for campus was to add more space for the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program. There are about 350 students enrolled in the program, Principal Matt Hreha said and its popularity among students propelled administrators to prioritize the lab when considering modernization options. deervalleytimes.com
“Our STEM classrooms now have two distinct areas, a computer area and a workspace for project creation,” he said. “The added space allows for the teachers to have more flexibility to allow for whole class instruction, either with the computers or with helping them create their projects. It also allows for more collaboration between the two STEM classes as they are now located next to each other and have a shared outside space,” Hreha said.

STEM teacher Dennis Meyers said the transition to the new designated STEM lab and classroom has made a significant difference in his teaching. “The layout of the room really allows for extensive research, computer designs, collaboration, and construction,” he said. “The open space allows me to facilitate learning and still allow for students to critically think and be creative.” “In STEM class, we use the design process to brainstorm, research, develop ideas, create models, test and evaluate design ideas and communicate their solutions to solve problems,” Meyers said. This year, student assignments include creating cardboard cars that will support a student riding down a hill; designing and creating a computer-generated passive solar home; and the use of coding skills to program Sphero Robots and drones. When students returned to school, they were pleased with the revitalized look and feel of the campus, Hreha said.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal
IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON
A police detective tries to figure out a series of similar murders that occur every nine years. Combining sci-fi with more grounded genres like crime can lead to mixed results, but In the Shadow of the Moon is done in a way that is both creative and satisfying. Director Jim Mickle gives a unique look and feel to each decade the film is set. Boyd Holbrook gives one of his best performances as the lead, balancing obsession, sadness and determination in a great way. Michael C. Hall is also enjoyable as his brother-in-law who starts as the “jerk sibling” but slowly becomes more empathetic over time. A little more development behind the killer in question would have been ideal, however the film is still a satisfying piece of pulp with a new take on the genre. *NOTE: This film is only available on Netflix.
GEMINI MAN
A retiring assassin is on the run from an organization using a younger clone of himself to try to kill him. Ang Lee gives us an exciting look as to what the future of cinema will be. While I can’t speak for the high frame rate 3D (the viewing was in 2D), the de-aging work is well done. Aside from
one scene, the young Will Smith looks lifelike and highlights the real potential this technology has. The action is also a lot of fun. DP Dion Beebe, working with Lee, captures the intensity and high speed of each scene, including some great one takes. The script, however, is another story. It felt jumbled, thin and has clearly been rewritten multiple times by different screenwriters since the 90s. A good example of an interesting idea that is executed poorly.
IN THE TALL GRASS
A brother and sister get lost in a field of grass searching for a young boy, only to discover the field is more than what it seems.

In the Tall Grass is a prime example of why some stories should stay in written form. You can only have people walk into grass, wander around and scream for each other for so long before one becomes bored. If the characters have nothing beyond basic traits (concerned brother, mother-to-be, creepy kid, etc.), you have a bigger issue at hand. Great photography, including some interesting incorporations of CGI, can only get you so far. The film doesn’t even have much of the viciousness of the original novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Of the numerous King works that have yet to be adapted, this is one that was unneeded.

YAM PROPERTIES ACQUIRES
The Shops at Norterra
By Molly Cerreta Smith
B
ob Parsons, Arizona billionaire businessman and GoDaddy founder, has recently added The Shops at Norterra to his ever-expanding portfolio of commercial real estate via his company YAM Properties. Parsons purchased the shopping, dining and entertainment district located at the I-17 and Happy Valley Road for $108 million…in cash. However, he was just named one of the top five richest businesspeople in Arizona by Forbes 400, so that’s probably chump change to Parsons. Prior to YAM Properties’ recent acquisition, The Shops at Norterra was previously a joint venture partnership between USAA Real Estate Company and RED Development, which last year completed a multi-million dollar renovation of the center and welcomed new tenants upon completion. Initially the site was home to two retail buildings and the renovation included plans to increase the entertainment and dining options. The mixed-
use destination was redesigned to give the community a more welcoming communal and social area for eating, drinking and entertainment — and it quickly became a popular hangout and shopping destination for the neighborhood.
In addition to offering major tenants such as anchors Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy and Harkins Theatres, other popular tenants include Victoria’s Secret, Mellow Mushroom, Sauce Pizza & Wine, Pita Jungle, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Texas Roadhouse, V’s Barbershop, Elevate Coffee, BevMo!, Anytime Fitness and Cyclebar Premium Indoor Cycling, Beauty District Salon Suites, Braidy Jewelers and the Shasta Pools Showroom. Not only does The Shops at Norterra boast a wide selection of the most indemand restaurants, retail and services spread across the 350,000 square foot center, but it’s also conveniently situated between the I-17 and Loop 101 (two of the busiest highways in the entire state) and is within five miles of
Deer Valley Airport. The current community within a 10-mile radius boasts close to 700,000 residents — and that number is expected to grow to by 50,000 in just the next five years.
“As a thriving, multiuse retail center in a rapidly expanding part of town, The Shops at Norterra is a great fit for YAM Properties,” Dan Dahl, the company’s director of real estate said in a statement regarding YAM Properties’ recent acquisition. He added, “We look forward to bringing new tenants and events into Norterra and serving the growing North Phoenix community.” Currently housing more than 50 retailers, restaurants and service tenants, the Shops at Norterra will experience additional growth under the umbrella of YAM Properties. The company is set to add a number of new tenants to the center within the next six months including Sephora, All American Patio Furniture, Luv 2 Play, State 48 Brewery, Osteria Mia Italian Restaurant, Crumbl Cookies, Morning Ritual, Tikka Shack and Koi Poke. Sephora brings the north Phoenix area a mecca of high-end cosmetics, skincare, hair care and beauty products to primp and pamper from head to toe with product lines including Marc Jacobs, Tarte, La Mer, Too Faced, Benefit, Fenty by Rihanna, Yves Saint Laurent and more. All American Outdoor Furniture just opened its doors in the center last month. The company has been a staple in Glendale for more than 30 years and The Shops at Norterra is the company’s second location. Featuring some of the most well-known brand name products in the industry such as Castelle, Frankford Umbrella and Kingsley Bate, All American Outdoor Furniture has plans to offer a multitude of new products.

With only one other location in the valley in Surprise, Luv 2 Play is set to open its second location at The Shops at Norterra in the coming months. A paradise for children, Luv 2 Play features an indoor playground, dedicated toddler and baby play areas, a soft climbing wall, redemption games, building area with LEGO tables, and pretend play area (featuring a grocery store, theatre, beauty parlor and doctor’s office). The concept also features a private room for party, café and eating area for kids as well as an inviting relax area for the parents with free Wifi and a café with coffee, wine and beer options. State 48 Brewery has been taking the valley by storm and north Phoenix is its next target. The brewery at the Shops at Norterra will serve as the company’s fifth location. State 48’s scratch kitchen makes a variety of comfort food classics with a twist that are designed to complement their craft beers. Osteria Mia Italian Restaurant joins the mix as well. Owned and operated by Mario and Kayla Rana, who helped their family open the four existing State 48 Breweries, Osteria Mia will feature a mix of classic Italian dishes that incorporate local flavor and modern dishes using ingredients typically found in traditional Italian cuisine. Guests can enjoy small plates, build-your-own charcuterie and bruschetta boards, and a rotating menu of handmade pasta, as well as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. For a sweet treat after a great meal, Crumbl Cookies is sure to please everyone’s sweet tooth. With several locations around the valley, this location will be the first to serve this market. The Crumbl concept offers a menu of cookie offerings that rotate on a weekly basis with inspired flavors such as Reese’s Pieces, Nutella Sea Salt, Chocolate Caramel, and deervalleytimes.com

Also coming soon to The Shops at Norterra, Morning Ritual features a relaxed brunch-all-day vibe that offers handcrafted brunch cocktails and signature mimosas, benedicts, omelets, pancakes and more. For some ethnic delights, Tikka Shack offers Indian cuisine in a friendly, casual atmosphere with a menu featuring traditional slow-crafted Indian dishes and simplified pairings, as well as build-your-own options.
In a relatively short time since it launched in 2012, YAM Properties has been scooping up properties around the valley — acquiring and operating more than 2.5 million square feet of office and retail space around Tempe, Scottsdale, Mesa, Phoenix and Glendale with tenants such as movie theatres, restaurants, salons and services, entertainment and more. The real estate investment and development arm of YAM Worldwide, Inc., YAM Properties’ portfolio also includes the recent acquisition of Westgate Entertainment District as well as 101 & Scottsdale, Agua Caliente, Centerpoint on Mill, Citadelle Plaza, Cornerstone, Hayden Station, Il Palazzo at Arrowhead Ranch, McDowell Mountain Marketplace, Scottsdale Grayhawk
Koi Poke is also on-trend with the build-your-own concept — bringing the spirit of aloha to the beloved poke bowl concept. Diners can build a customized meal featuring choices of protein (such as tuna, salmon, shrimp, octopus, lobster and even tofu and

When it comes to shopping, dining, entertainment and services, the beautiful open-air Shops at Norterra encompasses it all for community residents, and there is something for all ages. For more information about YAM Properties, visit www.yamproperties. com.

ASKING PRICES UP 9% OVER LAST YEAR, BUT ARE BUYERS PAYING IT?
By Chad Arend, Realtor
FOR BUYERS: The news media is filled with shortterm predictions regarding the economy and how it will, or will not, affect real estate prices. It’s understandable for buyers to want their home to appreciate in value after they purchase - who doesn’t? However, there is far too much attention paid to short-term influences and fluctuations these days and not enough attention paid to the long view. Real estate is a long-term investment for many people. Despite the euphoria of 2005-2007 and the nightmare of 2008-2011, on average, homes are selling 81.6% higher today than they were in the year 2000. That’s an average appreciation rate of 4.3% per year over the course of 19 years. Smaller homes appreciated the most over time while larger homes appreciated the least. Homes under 1,000sf have appreciated 122% since 2000, an average of 6.4% per year.
Those between 1,000-2,000sf appreciated 106%, an average of 5.6% per year. 2,000-3,000sf appreciated 68% at 3.6% per year. 3,000-4,000sf appreciated 49% at 2.6% per year, and homes over 4,000sf appreciated 11% at 0.6% per year.
buyers paying? Actually, many of them are! In the $200K-$250K range, the average sales price per square foot is still 0.8% higher than the average list price; and between $250K-$300K the average sales price is 6.8% higher than
the average list per square foot. Things change over $500K. Between $500K$1M there’s a -6.3% gap between asking price and sales price, and over $1M the average sales price is -15.1% below the average asking price.
FOR SELLERS: Average asking prices per square foot are up 9% over this time last year and they’re continuing to rise. However, not one individual price range has risen 9% or more; confusing, right? That’s because the sharp increase in the average has more to do with a growing market share of luxury active listings over $500K as inventory has plummeted everywhere else. The highest increase is within the $200K$250K range, where sellers are asking 5.6% more than they were last year. That’s followed by listings over $1M where they’re asking 4.2% more and $500K-$1M at 4.0%. All other price ranges are just 1-3% higher. But are

ot since 2006 to 2007 have we seen this amount of new construction in the Greater Phoenix Industrial market. We have had approximately 10,000,000 square feet of new construction in the industrial market alone in 2019, and the demand and absorption rates justify the new development.
The lease product has kept up with demand, with many new projects built in the last few years in the industrial sector. There are about 800,000 square feet currently available in Deer Valley but minimal small lease spaces. The majority of vacant space is 10,000 square feet up to 150,000. There are only a few projects left that can accommodate 1,000 to 3,000 square foot tenants. And forget it if you are looking for a yard - those properties are few and far between.
N
The Deer Valley Airpark could use some of that infusion. We are sitting in a very healthy submarket with lease rates and purchase prices increasing exponentially based on a significant lack of current inventory. There have been 50 industrial buildings sold in the Airpark this year for an average sale price of about $131 per square foot. There are currently only about 18 buildings available for users to purchase between 5,000 and 100,000 square feet, all of which are second generation. The only new buildings under construction are MACS Pinnacle 7 Phase 2 two buildings on Pinnacle Peak and 3rd Street that are for lease, and one 12,000 square foot building under construction in TTR Industrial Park I at Deer Valley and 16th Street. The demand for purchase options is very high in the Deer Valley Airpark but our inventory has not kept up recently. Of course we have reached a Sellers market finally and pricing has reflected that. We are fast approaching the numbers we saw in the heydays of 2005 to 2007. Most quality industrial

GETAWAY
Visiting SOUTHERN AR IZONA
HISTORY, NATURE, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
J
ust north of the Mexico border and a bit south of Phoenix you can find a part of the state that is steeped in history, beautiful terrain, and fascinating sights to visit. Southern Arizona is a great place for a weekend getaway, and an ideal location to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals heading to locations further north. The gateway to Southern Arizona is Tucson, which is a destination unto itself, but a little further south you can find many interesting small towns, national and state parks, historic sites, and local artists and wineries. Here is a list of some of our favorite Southern Arizona towns and the must-see places to visit when you go. BENSON The first stop on our list is Benson, Arizona. A tiny town of about 5,000 people, Benson is the first major stop on the highway past Tucson. The town was founded as a railroad terminal and a stagecoach station, serving as a place for travelers to stop as they made their way through the southern part of Arizona. It’s historical status as a “pit stop” for tourists passing through remains to this day. One of Benson’s key features, however, is that it is also the home of Kartchner Caverns State Park. This world-class Arizona State Park features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. The
By Jill “MamaBug” Frier park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course, touring the caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance as tours book up quickly. SIERRA VISTA A bit further down the road, past Kartchner Caverns on Highway 90, you’ll find the town of Sierra Vista. Much closer to the border of Mexico, Sierra Vista is a larger community with a population of around 44,000. The Hummingbird Capital of the World, Sierra Vista has a more temperate climate than Phoenix, with beautiful mountain views, big skies, and tons of Old West history. As one of the key settings for many of the popular Joanna Brady novels by J. A. Jance, this idyllic area is a fantastic place to enjoy the outdoors and hike one of the many Southern Arizona “sky islands.” Sierra Vista is also adjacent to the historic U.S. Army base, Fort Huachuca. Constructed in 1877, Fort Huachuca was one of several forts established to protect southern Arizona against the legendarily ferocious Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. It was also headquarters of the famed 10th Calvary, also known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” The fort is still an active Army base today, but you can

visit the historic district and see many of the notable Old West structures still standing. TOMBSTONE One of the most well-known small towns in Southern Arizona is Tombstone, located down Highway 80, south of Benson. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. With a population of less than 1,500 people, Tombstone is still one of the most popular places for Arizona tourists to visit and experience a true taste of western history. Visitors can see a reenactment of the showdown at the O.K. Corral, visit Boot Hill Cemetery, or stop in the historic Rose Tree Inn Museum. The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. If you’re looking for a trip to one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, this is it. BISBEE Further south down Highway 80, about 10 miles north of the Mexican border, is the small town of Bisbee. A cultural
mecca for artists, the historic mining town is home to about 5,600 people with charmingly restored Victorian homes, galleries, museums, and historic sites throughout the town. The Queen Mine was one of the richest copper mines in history and is still a popular spot for visitors. WILCOX One of our favorite stops as we travel further west on I-10 towards New Mexico is Wilcox. A small town of not quite 4,000 people, Wilcox is known as southern Arizona wine country. An agricultural oasis, the Wilcox area produces almost 75 percent of the grapes grown in Arizona, and grows more wine-making grapes than any other region in the state. This small railroad town is also the gateway to the Chiricahua National Monument, known for its fascinating rock formations and mountain trails. Located at the convergence of the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre, Sonoran Desert, and Chihuahuan Deserts, Chiricahua is one of most unique National Park sites to visit in the state. Southern Arizona is a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique, historical places and natural wonders to experience. Take some time to check out the local favorites in each town and be sure to check www.LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas for great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! deervalleytimes.com

ARIZONA LAW GIVES VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE A NEW HOPE By Robert E. Pastor t can take decades for survivors of child sexual abuse to share their secret and break the silence. Arizona law now recognizes that victims of sexual abuse need time to process and understand what happened to them.
conclusively shows people with a history of childhood sexual abuse have an increased risk of major depression, suicide attempt, alcohol or drug dependence, social anxiety, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction, rape after the age of 18 and divorce throughout their lives.
Adults who have suffered child sexual abuse may experience a variety of symptoms throughout their lives or in chronic episodes. Survivors of sexual abuse often suffer deep seeded shame, guilt and self-blame that often leads to depression and anxiety. Survivors of abuse may develop a belief that they caused the sexual abuse or that they deserved the abuse. No child causes or deserves to be sexually abused. These beliefs may lead to self-destructing or sabotaging relationships. As children and as adults, survivors of sexual abuse may experience intrusive or recurring thoughts, nightmares or even flashbacks about the abuse. Research
Elliot Nelson et al., Association Between Self-Reported Childhood Sexual Abuse and Adverse Psychosocial Outcomes: Results from a Twin Study, 59 Archives of General Psychiatry, 139, 139-145 (2002). Studies also show child sexual abuse can lead to sexual dysfunctions, sexual compulsion, confusion and struggles over gender and sexual identity, homophobia, problems with intimacy, guilt, self-blame, low self-esteem, negative self-images, and increased anger. A statute of limitations is like a legal stopwatch that counts down the time to file criminal charges or a civil lawsuit. There are often different statutes of limitations for different types of cases. It is important to know when the clock starts ticking, when the clock stops ticking and whether anything restarts the clock. The new law in Arizona gives victims of child sexual abuse more time to take legal action and for some victims, it restarts the clock - but for a limited time.
child sexual abuse. Under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse have until December 31, 2020. It does not matter how long it has been or how old a victim is, under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse can take back their voice and seek the justice they deserve.

What do you see when you first enter Lookout? Televisions. On every wall, over the bar, outside; no matter where your eyes fall, you will find a TV. Enjoy any number of events, ESPN, or even ChiveTV (one of my personal favorites). Lookout offers both spacious indoor and outdoor seating. Their patio is a favorite this time of year with misters, shades and fun games (think Giant Jenga) available to play while you wait for your meal. When I first walked in, I was immediately greeted with a friendly “hello” and offered to sit wherever I like. Everyone looked cheerful and I can honestly say I felt welcomed.
“
pulled pork, ham, swiss (no pickles for me) and mustard piled on a hoagie was perfect. The pulled pork was juicy but not to the point of soaking the bread. The flavors were well blended to create this sandwich. Now the Tavern Berto’s. This menu item is not to be taken lightly (pun intended). When I placed my order, I assumed I would be able to eat this myself along with my sandwich… NO CHANCE. This is a pile of fries topped with carne asada, cheddar, guacamole, sour cream and pico. The steak was tender, the quac was flavorful and the pico added that little bit of healthy food that my doctor says I should eat. The only problem was that there was no way for me to finish it on my own. A “to-go” box was in my future and a midnight snack was a sure thing tonight.
Lookout Tavern has a large, classic pub-food inspired menu made with as many fresh ingredients as possible. Our half pound burgers are ground and pressed in house daily from high quality chuck. Our house fries are cut in house from fresh potatoes.
The menu was as well stocked as the bar, with tasty menu items like their Loaded Nachos and Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos, to Guac n’ Pepper burgers and Crispy Buffalo Chicken salads. Their prices are all reasonable and I don’t recall seeing a menu item over $14. On this stop, I was all in on the Cubano sandwich and some Tavern Berto’s fries. Within a relatively short period of time my order arrived and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The Cubano with
”
Is this going to be a regular stop? For sure. Besides the many items left to try on the menu, Lookout keeps the entertainment alive throughout the week with Trivia Night on Wednesday and themed nights all through the month. If you are a Steelers fan (you know who you are), this is a Steeler Nation bar so don’t pass it by. They also have regular UFC and Boxing events.
