D
oes your child have a ticking time bomb in their chest?
Eighteen years ago, Sharon Bates didn’t know there was one in her son’s chest waiting to go off. She got the phone call no parent ever wants to receive, telling her that her only child, Anthony, had died suddenly of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), otherwise known as an enlarged heart. Though he was a seemingly healthy college athlete and had 25 pre-participation sports physicals throughout his life, his disease was never detected. ECGs (Electrocardiograms - also known as, EKG’s) were never part of a pre-participation physical, nor are they required now. From this

tragedy, Sharon channeled her pain, anger, and frustration to create the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF) in 2002. Since then, ABF has been dedicated to saving young lives through the early detection of HCM because, Sharon Bates believes, “No parent should suffer the heartbreak of losing a child to an undiagnosed cardiac malady.”
Why is ABF’s work so important? October has been designated as Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness month. ABF’s life-saving mission is to provide crucial cardiac screenings for ages 10 and up, as well as establish a nationwide cardiac screening program for youth, addressing the public health issue through education, collaboration and facilitation. ABF is the only organization screening our nation’s youth with a copyrighted training protocol, as well as a collection mechanism of epidemiological data which provides valuable information for researchers and medical professionals. In addition, ABF donates Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) to area schools along with AED operation and CPR training. Since its inception in 2002, ABF has screened over 14,000 people, with 13 percent of those showing cardiac anomaly. Half of the findings are considered po-
tentially life threatening and need immediate followup. How valuable are your loved ones’ lives? ABF provides cardiac screenings events for organizations like businesses, medical offices, places of worship, schools, clubs or athletic studios. As long as there’s space for it, any organization can host an ABF event. CPR/AED training sessions and Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) education are hugely important to protecting the community. ABF conducts cardiac screenings, providing both low cost access to healthcare and preventive cardiac tests to the public in Phoenix and the surrounding communities all over Arizona. Participants receive noninvasive cardiac tests, including ECGs, Echocardiograms (also known as Ultrasound) and blood pressure readings conducted by volunteer medical professionals. During large screening events, a Board-Certified Cardiologist reviews the results with each participant. Small screening event results are sent to the cardiologist after the event and reviewed within a week and participants are notified within another week. If a test result contains evidence of a heart abnormality or other health concern, they are referred to their family doctor first to receive treatment or referral for additional follow up treatment. Most people can get screened in about 30 minutes. Is a half hour of your time worth the peace of mind of knowing you and your family’s hearts are healthy? ABF is leading the way! Earlier in 2018, ABF expanded their world headquarters to an office on 32nd Street and Shea. The need for a larger office space was imperative. As Sharon states, “It has given ABF the ability to expand into medical research. Utilizing college interns, the research program will support research projects with University of Arizona and Kansas State University. WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM IN ARIZONA PLEASE JOIN THE PARADISE VALLEY NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA REVOLUTION (PVNSDAR) AND HELP SPONSOR THE WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM! The program will be held on Saturday December 15, 2018 at 10 am at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Az. 85024. The PVNSDAR chapter has sponsored
veteran memory wreaths for the Wreaths Across America Program for the past several years and is a fundraising group/sponsoring group for it. The event is a wonderful way to: Remember- our fallen Veterans; Honorthose who serve; Teach – our children the value of freedom. In 2007 the Worchester family of Harrington, Maine along with veterans and others who had helped with their annual Christmas Wreath ceremony in Arlington formed “Wreaths Across America.” The goal was to continue and expand this effort and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This non-profit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. In 2017 Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers laid over 1,565,000 memorial
wreaths at nearly 1440 locations in the United States and beyond. This was accomplished with help from over 3270 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions, donations of trucking and shipping plus thousands of helping hands! The annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as “ the world`s largest veteran`s parade”, stopping at schools, monuments, veterans homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to “Remember, Honor and Teach!” Proceeds place a wreath at one of the participating cemeteries: help support our fundraising partners including educational and veteran’s services outreach programs. (Please note that all sponsorships are sent directly to the location of choice and no wreaths are sent to the individuals purchasing sponsorships.) On Saturday, December 15 there will be wreath ceremonies in over 1200 cemeteries and the PVNSDAR participates at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at

That cemetery has approximated 65,000 graves and each year more wreaths are placed as veterans are remembered for their wonderful service to our country. INNOVATION AWARD FOR ADOT’S I-17 WRONG-WAY VEHICLE SYSTEM
GCN MAGAZINE RECOGNIZES FIRST-IN-THE NATION THERMAL-CAMERA SYSTEM THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S PILOT INTERSTATE 17 WRONG-WAY VEHICLE ALERT SYSTEM BEING TESTED IN PHOENIX HAS BEEN recognized with a Government Innovation Award from GCN, an information technology industry magazine. Governor Doug Ducey, who has directed ADOT to advance efforts to develop wrong-way vehicle countermeasures, including the I-17 system, said the award recognizes the state’s commitment to public safety.
“Too frequently we see reports of another death on our highways due to a wrong-way driver – often one impaired by alcohol or drugs,” Governor Ducey said. “Arizona has taken meaningful steps to crack down on wrong-way driving, and we are proud to lead the way among states for developing and testing measures that make our roads safer and protect innocent drivers.” In addition, Governor Ducey championed a new law that has wrongway drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol face felony charges. The first-in-the-nation system being tested on 15 miles of I-17 uses thermal cameras to detect and track wrong-way vehicles while also immediately alerting ADOT and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. This can save troopers valuable time in responding to incidents rather than waiting for 911 calls from other motorists. “ADOT is working alongside several other state agencies to explore every viable option when it comes to detecting and preventing wrong-way

vehicles,” said Dallas Hammit, ADOT’s state engineer and deputy director for transportation. “While we know that no system can be designed to completely prevent wrong-way drivers, the I-17 system is a significant step forward in these efforts.” The system also allows ADOT to quickly warn other drivers about wrong-way vehicles via messages on electronic freeway signs. The pilot project is allowing ADOT to evaluate how technology can be used to reduce the risks associated with wrongway drivers before expanding it to other freeways. “This technology so far has shown great promise,” said Brent Cain, who leads ADOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations division. “With a commitment to helping every driver get home safely, our entire team has worked tirelessly to generate and research ideas and then design, implement and test this system.” Thermal cameras have recorded more
than 30 detections of wrong-way vehicles, mostly along I-17 off-ramps located within the project’s boundaries between the I-10 “Stack” interchange near downtown and the Loop 101 interchange in north Phoenix. Most the drivers in those incidents have turned around on an off-ramp without entering the mainline lanes of I-17. The system’s 90 thermal cameras are positioned to detect wrong-way vehicles entering off-ramps or traveling along I-17. Through the computerized decision-support system, the pilot project also is designed to trigger new illuminated wrong-way signs with flashing red lights aimed at getting the attention of the wrong-way driver. This technology cannot prevent all wrong-way crashes from happening. The primary goal is reducing the risk of serious crashes by alerting AZDPS and ADOT to wrong-way vehicles much faster than waiting for 911 calls from other motorists. While technology holds promise for reducing the risk of serious crashes, it can’t prevent impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel.

he year was 2002. A fast-growing web design company from Minnesota called Tension Design had just relocated to sunny Arizona, where opportunities were abundant. In the early 2000s, more and more companies were scrambling to catch up with the digital age, launching websites and publishing information in a place simply known as “online.” This increasing demand for web content fueled the growth of Tension Design. Averaging nearly 80 new websites a year, they were set to continue their upward trajectory. For this company from Minnesota, life was good. But Mother Nature had other plans…

Simply put, they believe websites must be user friendly, search engine friendly, and business friendly. This approach seems to be appreciated: 96 percent of Tension Design’s business comes from repeat clients. Not bad, especially for a company that lost everything to Mother Nature less than two years ago.
When asked for advice about building or redesigning a website, here’s what Asleson had to say: “Do your research and make sure you choose the right web partner and content management system. A good web design company won’t hold all the cards in their hands post-launch. If they are a true partner, they won’t force you to go through them for simple website updates. Instead, they will train your staff to be able to update your site as needed.”

In 2016, California had been hit with record rainfall - enough to end the drought conditions in certain parts of the state. Unfortunately, when massive amounts of rain mix with dry soil in a mountainous region, gravity goes to work. During the rainstorms, a huge mudslide took out the west coast data center for hundreds of companies, including Tension Design. That meant all the website backups for Tension Design’s clients were obliterated. A quarter-million dollars of work, suddenly gone. Ironically (and tragically), Tension Design had been paying a premium for the safety and security of this offsite backup solution. Eric Asleson, a Norterra resident and co-founder of Tension Design, was faced with a choice: Close down the company or rebuild it. He chose the latter. Eric and his team went to work rebuilding everything from scratch. Every web page, database, photo gallery, and video library were painstakingly recreated and delivered to their clients, as promised. The process nearly bankrupted the company. But they persevered. Fast-forward to 2018, and Tension Design is once again on the rise, delivering not just websites, but complete digital strategies. However, managing a brick and mortar business and all that comes with it – sales, merchandising, marketing, billing, accounting, scheduling, client relations, communications, personnel management, building maintenance, equipment maintenance, taxes, licensing, certifications, etc. – falls far beyond my comfort zone. So, getting better at all that is what I am currently working on.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… My gym! My husband built it for me. Aside from raising my children, it’s the most challenging and rewarding thing I’ve ever done.

Everyone says you should love what you do, and I think that’s a given. Who would start a business doing something they hate? That said, the saying “Sometimes love just ain’t enough” is true. GHOSTLY PLACES IN ARIZONA A HISTORY OF HAUNTING

s the temperatures begin to drop in Arizona, the thrills and chills of Halloween spookiness begin to creep in. One of the most fascinating, and entertaining, aspects of Arizona is the legendary prevalence of its ghost stories. As the heart of the Wild West, Arizona has had a history of violence, tragedy and mayhem from its earliest days on record. The result was hundreds of ghostly stories that surround certain, creepy spots throughout our state. Some of the ghostly spots are difficult to find and can be hard to reach, but here are a few of the reportedly haunted places around Arizona you can easily visit and take a ghost tour this Halloween season.

IRDCAGE THEATER 535 East Allen Street Tombstone, Arizona Tombstone, located in the southern part of Arizona, is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone has seen its share of violence and death. The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. Arguably one of the most haunted places in the state, the current owners of the Birdcage Theater describe it this way: “Over one hundred and forty bullet holes remain in the building. Visitors and employees of the Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone, Arizona, have reported seeing the spirits of former prostitutes and men in cowboy hats. Some claim to be touched and pushed by unseen forces. At night, the sounds of laughter, yelling and music have been heard, as though the parties of the old west were still raging.”

dona, is the historic town of Jerome. Once a billion dollar copper mining town, Jerome was also once known as the “Wickedest Town in the West.” The town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and many of the original structures built in its heyday are still precariously hanging from the side of the mountain, looming over the Verde Valley of NorthCentral Arizona. The Grand Hotel is reportedly one of the most haunted establishments in Jerome, a town full of great ghost stories. A former hospital, it is said to have about eight different ghosts haunting the building, ranging from patients to staff who died in a variety of frightening ways. Although the current owner is not really into hauntings or ghost stories, he does say:
Visitors report hearing voices, seeing “spirit orbs” and feeling cold spots around the former mining town, reportedly another Arizona hot spot for ghostly activity. “If there are spirits, they must be a lot happier occupying a hotel instead of a hospital. They are dealing with a clientele that are here by choice and not necessity.”
If you’re looking for one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, take a day or weekend trip south to Tombstone and stop in at the Bird Cage Theater.

and established the Vulture Mine. A small mining town cropped up to support the mine and the usual antics of the Wild West ensued. Once home to a population of several thousand people, Vulture City provides people with a glimpse of the mining culture and lifestyle in the Old West, and visitors can explore several of the buildings to see a piece of Arizona history. Visitors can also see the infamous, and very creepy, “Hanging Tree,” where legend has it that 18 miners were executed for stealing gold in the late 1800s.
Jerome is well known for its hauntings, and haunted tours of the town are available for visitors who want to see more of the spooky sights and rumored haunts of the spirits in Jerome and the surrounding area.

ULTURE GOLD MINE 36610 North 355th Avenue Wickenburg, Arizona A little northwest of Phoenix is Wickenburg and the former site of Vulture City, another once-booming mining town with a brief and tempestuous history. In 1863, Henry Wickenburg discovered gold and silver
The town of Wickenburg hosts its own Legends and Ghosts Tours, so if you are seeking a spooky trip to an old mining town, take a quick journey down the road to Wickenburg for a tour of the Vulture Mine and find out about the other haunted spots in the area.

ASSAYAMPA INN 122 E Gurley St. Prescott, Arizona The one time capitol of Arizona, Prescott is home to many stories of ghosts and Wild West antics. One of the most famous, however, is the supposed haunting of the somewhat more modern Hassayampa Inn in on Gurley Street. The hotel was constructed in the 1920s and quickly became the site of one of Prescott’s most notorious hauntings. The hotel
describes its most famous ghost story this way: “The year it opened, 1927, a very young bride checked into a balcony suite with her much older husband. According to the story, her husband went out to buy cigarettes and never returned. She waited for three days and then took her life in despair. Since then, countless hotel guests and employees have reported encounters with a young woman throughout the hotel crying at the end of a bed, dressed in a pink gown in the hallway, appearing and disappearing from rooms. Others have reported strange cold spots in her honeymoon suite. Frequently the smell of flowers emanates from the empty room.” The Hassayampa Inn is a beautiful, historic hotel in downtown Prescott, but it’s also the location of quite a few different reported ghost sightings. If you are in the mood for a good ghost story and some famous hauntings this Halloween season, the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott is worth a weekend visit.
These are just a few of the many spots in Arizona rumored to be home to ghosts of our Wild West past. NEW OUTDOOR SPACE TO NORTERRA By Haley MacDonell
T
he Shops at Norterra are changing as the completion of multimillion-dollar redevelopments draw to a close. Six months ago, RED Development began these renovations on retail space and adding outdoor seating. Within the next three months, new vendors will be moving in and opening their doors. “We noticed a need in the neighborhood to repurpose existing retail buildings and create a more communal, social area for eating, drinking
and gathering in a well-designed, welcoming space,” said Scott Rehorn, partner at RED Development, a wholly integrated commercial real estate company. “Our vision has really come to life and we think our guests will enjoy the new atmosphere.” The Shops at Norterra, located at the northeast corner of Happy Valley and the I-17 include more than 40 shops and restaurants. Outdoor seating at restaurants like Pita Jungle, was one of the goals for the new developments. The shopping center also boasts community events such
as live music at Elevate Coffee on Friday and Saturday nights, and a Halloween Spooktacular and Car Show which will take place on Friday, October 19. “It’s a destination location because of the restaurants, and because of the atmosphere we have created,” said Rehorn. “You want what you can’t get online: dining and a great atmosphere. That doesn’t come in a box to your house.” As construction finishes in the next few months, new stores will be opening their doors including
As You Wish Pottery, Shasta Pools Showroom and Koi Poke. The 44,500 square feet of the Shops at Norterra already include restaurant favorites like Mellow Mushroom, and entertainment options including Harkins Theatres. “Local and regional businesses are constantly evolving, but brick and mortar stores aren’t going away,” Rehorn said. here is no doubt that Halloween is right around the corner. Grocery store shelves are bursting with costumes and candy. While this is a time of the year where families can come together and enjoy the fall season, it is also important for parents to remember the importance of safeguarding medications that may be easily accessible to their kids. Many medicines and candy can be difficult if not impossible to tell apart. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), each year approximately 3 million people swallow or have contact with a poisonous substance — many under the age of 5. A young child may be poisoned by ingesting prescription or over-the-counter medications. Making it particularly enticing to young children is the fact that many medicines have a lookalike candy counterpart. Some of the most common household medicines that resemble candy include: • Motrin tablets look like orange M&M’s • Adderall XR resembles Tic-Tacs • Aspirin look like Certs • Dayquil capsules look like Mike and Ike’s • Ex-Lax looks like a Hershey’s candy bar • Vitamins look like Gummy Bears To help prevent this, parents should keep all medicines, prescription and over-the-counter, in a safe place not accessible to their children. This is also an opportunity for parents to talk to their children about the dangers of taking medicines or other substance that did not come from their parents. deervalleytimes.com
An additional concern is the availability of marijuana edibles. These products look and taste like regular food a child might consume: cookies, brownies, toaster pastries, and candies. Older kids who wish to experiment with getting high might choose these products because they are harder to detect. Edibles have no tell-tale smoke or odor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and AAP share these tips for keeping medication away from children. • Keep medications stored in areas up high and out of your children’s reach, or in a locked medicine cabinet • Don’t leave medications out on the counter after you are finished taking them • Keep your medications in their original containers, with labels intact • Remember to securely close the childproof safety cap each time you use any medication • Don’t leave your next dose out on the table or counter as a reminder to take it later • Properly dispose of any unused or expired medications • Never refer to any medications as “candy” or a treat Parents need to be aware of the safety issues with any prescription or over-the-counter medications and know what to do in an emergency situation if you suspect that a child has ingested something poisonous. Stay calm and try and determine what the child has ingested. If your child is awake and alert, immediately call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. But if they are unresponsive, have collapsed or not breathing call 911 immediately. And if the child has swallowed something, take it away from them but do not induce vomiting. t’s not often you see two homes in the same zip code separated in price by $1.4 million. But that’s exactly what we’re experiencing in the area right now. While most of the properties for sale are listed at $300,000-$600,000, there’s an increase in homes at both higher and lower price points. The highest priced 85085 house is on the market for $1.6 million. And just a few miles away there’s one listed for $250,000. This type of disparity tends to happen in newer areas – you get a mix of different property sizes, home designs, and price points. Older, more established neighborhoods have usually settled into their home values, which typically move up and down in price together as the market moves.
The million-dollar homes, as beautiful as they are, have a narrower mar-
ketplace. But the increased inventory of value priced homes (in the $200’s) appeals to a much larger group of first-time home buyers, downsizers, or anyone previously “priced out” from the neighborhood. A search of listings at $250,000 or below shows 41 properties for sale in Norterra/ Deer Valley. Aside from being a great place to live, Deer Valley and Norterra are in the midst of a strong growth period, residentially and commercially. This combination of factors makes a community desirable and soughtafter. Buying a value priced home in a growing neighborhood could prove to be a savvy investment, as we might eventually see nothing available below $300,000. Those who “buy low” could soon find themselves with a pretty good chunk of equity. Not a bad position to be in, especially in a city that’s growing.

redicting the future in real estate is almost as hard as forecasting the weather. The amount of variables that affect the real estate market is beyond calculable. We can look back and see some very obvious indications of where the market was heading but hindsight is always so much clearer. Looking forward has always been the trick. The industrial market in Deer Valley Airpark has been very good lately. There have been many new developments over the last few years and much absorption of space. Vacancy rates are historically low currently. So where are we headed from here? If you’re asking me to predict the future, I can’t. One of my developers told me recently that it is near impossible to budget any new construction projects with any confidence. The cost of materials and labor are changing so fast it makes it very risky to start any new development today. Southwest Property Ventures developed SPV Pinnacle Peak 1 in 2014. Less than 2 years later SPV Pinnacle Peak 2 cost almost 20 percent
more to develop the same product. Today that uncertainty is even higher with world tariffs and labor shortages. It has become much harder for contractors to lock in pricing of subcontractors for extended periods of time due to the cost of goods and labor. What used to be a firm price on steel, concrete or any other construction material has now become a moving target. It near impossible now to lock in a budget on a new project. So much of what is happening today is dependent on national or world events that are certainly out of our control here. One thing I can predict today is that pricing is going up in the near future. What Southwest Property Ventures experienced with their two Pinnacle Peak projects is sure to continue with construction costs continuing to go up. Smart money will look to lock in their pricing today, meaning if there is a property currently on the market, it makes good financial sense to invest today and not wait to see where pricing goes tomorrow. Inventory for industrial buildings for purchase in Deer Valley Airpark is way down right now. There are now only about a half dozen properties between 2,000 and 5,000 square feet. There are three or four between 5,000 to 15,000 square feet, and most are older, secondgeneration properties. There are actually more buildings for sale between 20,000 and 100,000 square feet than smaller buildings. Pickings are slim and with pricing going up, buyers’ options will remain limited for a while. The economy is buzzing along and Phoenix is currently in a growth spurt with new projects all over town. We haven’t seen this number of cranes over the Phoenix skyline in many, many years. The future continues to look bright and I can see no reason to expect a slow down. Now may be as good a time as any to invest in real estate, especially if you’re a user with a requirement. deervalleytimes.com

TECHNICIAN MAGICIAN ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS Q. Should I turn off my computer or leave it on? A. Almost all computers are configured to go into sleep mode even when you select “shut down.” Leaving a computer in sleep mode is actually better for the system components when “Waking up” where as doing a fresh boot requires more power and is more taxing on the hardware. It is ok to leave your computer running or allow it to go into sleep mode on a frequent basis.
Q. How often should I check for windows updates? A. Windows is configured to update automatically and doesn’t require much action from the user. However, windows is set to install updates when it is restarted. Users should “Restart” their computer at least once a month to allow windows to install any new updates it may have downloaded but not yet installed. Restarting your computer also allows windows to restart services that
may have stopped running or crashed, you would be surprised how often restarting your computer fixes an issue. Q. What is a UPS? And do I need one? A. UPS stands for “Uninterruptible Power Supply”. It is a surge protector that has a built-in battery backup system in case power fails. When the power goes out in your home the UPS will kick on and run off of battery power for a certain amount of time. A UPS is not required for all home setups but is recommended for anyone who has a desktop computer that they leave running for extended periods of time. This will prevent the computer from abruptly shutting down causing damage to internal components that have not been able to shut down properly (i.e. Hard drives). Devices that are recommended to be plugged into a UPS are: desktop computers, landline modems, routers, home phone sys-
tems, computer monitors, and printers. Q. Will Microsoft ever call me? A. The answer is usually no. Microsoft and other manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Toshiba, or Lenovo do not have your number on file and they do not cold call customers. There are many Illegitimate Tech support companies out there that will claim to be working for one of these major brands and claim that your computer has been compromised in some way. They will request you allow them to remotely log into your computer, so they can fix the issue. Once inside your computer they will claim issues and demand payment to fix them. Most of the time at this point if a customer does not pay they will cause a major issue with the computer making it unusable. If you ever get a phone call like this the best thing to do is just hang up the phone, eventually they will stop bothering you because you are wise to their scam.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS SEARCHING
Told mainly through a computer and websites, a father tries to find his daughter after she goes missing. The format Searching uses to tell its story made it much more suspenseful and interesting than most other regular narrative features in its genre. The use of real websites both popular and obscure adds to the descent that David (John Cho) has to go through. Speaking of which, given that most of the time is spent solely with him, Cho does a fantastic job…so much so that he actually overshadows the other actors, though they all do their best. Beyond the main plot, the way the internet is portrayed is scarily accurate. From the different types of content that’s promoted on websites, to the people pretending to feel bad about a situation just for attention, it all feels genuine.
THE NUN
After the suicide of a nun, a priest and a novitiate investigate the area where it occurred, discovering the horrors that lie within it. The Nun should be a film that I dislike, with the amount of jump scares, strange editing choices (especially during some vision scenes), and an all-around cliche feel (you’ll likely feel like you’ve seen this film several times before). But director Corin Hardy managed to grab me, perhaps due to my love of gothic looking films. Everything from the cinematography to the set design has a very creepy feel to it, with set pieces in graveyards, underground dungeons and a church’s nave. The film is also bolstered by the leads Demian Bichir (the genuinely sympathetic but stoic Father Burke) and Taissa Farmiga (Sister Irene, a curious but confident practicing nun who has some great moments in the third act). And despite the constant jump 20 • October 2018 • DEER VALLEY TIMES
scares, they were at least real and a few genuinely got me. The Nun was one of the weaker Conjuring films, but still well done.
THE PREDATOR
A soldier must work with a scientist to protect his son from both the government and Predators. The Predator doesn’t feel finished, and I don’t mean in a “cliffhanger ending” way. I mean there are moments where it feels like scenes are missing, such as never seeing what happens to certain characters (one of the main characters literally disappears towards the end). Speaking of the characters, there are none in this film, just caricatures, designed to fit a stereotype without having any development. And for a film that’s supposed to be intense and scary, the amount of comedy ruins any of that, and even then, most of the humor doesn’t even work. It really is interesting how a film with so much talent in front and behind the camera can result in such a bad film.
MANDY
A lumberjack goes after a cult leader after the death of his wife. What other film can you think of has Nicolas Cage fighting a demon biker gang? When’s the last time you saw Nicolas Cage give a genuinely great performance that makes you sympathize with his character while also being insane? What about a haunting score from the late Johann Johannsson that combines orchestra, synth AND rock? There are also amazing supporting roles from Andrea Riseborough and Linus Roache, the latter who hams it to oblivion. And don’t even get me started on the beautiful neon drenched visuals. Mandy is as much of an experience as it is a movie, and it’s one that you must see.
