The 2020 Diamondbacks 60-Game Regular Season Is In Full Swing MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ANNOUNCED THE 2020 60-GAME D-BACKS SCHEDULE, WHICH WILL CONSIST OF 10 GAMES AGAINST THE COLORADO ROCKIES, LOS ANGELES DODGERS, SAN DIEGO PADRES AND SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS PLUS INTERLEAGUE MATCHUPS AGAINST ALL FIVE AL WEST TEAMS. The D-backs will face the Houston Astros (six games), Oakland Athletics (four), Texas Rangers (four), Seattle Mariners (three) and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (three). The D-backs (@Dbacks @LosDbacks) opened the season on July 24 at Padres, marking the first time in franchise history that the team has started a season in San Diego. The home opener

was held at Chase Field on July 30 vs. Dodgers, one of seven home games against Los Angeles while the team will play only three games at Dodger Stadium. The 7-3 split of home-to-road games will also be the case against the Rockies, while the D-backs will host the Padres and Giants just three times while playing seven games each in San Diego and San Francisco. The first road trip of the season will see the D-backs play a two-game series against the Rangers in the firstever homestand at Globe Life Field. The Rangers and A’s will each come to Chase Field for a two-game series during the 2020 season while the Astros and Mariners will both play three games at Chase Field. The only AL West city

City Ci ty NNeews Deer Valley is District’s Most Undercounted Census Tract THE 2020 CENSUS IS WELL UNDERWAY AND ABOUT 62% OF HOUSEHOLDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAVE RESPONDED ONLINE BY PHONE OR BY MAIL SINCE INVITATIONS BEGAN ARRIVING IN MID-MARCH. As I monitor response rates in my Council District, I am particularly concerned that the district’s most undercounted census tract is Deer Valley with just 44% of residents responding to the 2020 Census.

A complete count is critical to determining how taxpayer dollars will be returned to our community for the next decade.

Throughout the city, responses are monitored by census tracts, which are small geographic regions, generally sized between 1,200 and 8,000 people with the intention of being maintained so that statistical comparisons can be made from census to census. Most of the census tracts in my District have reached a 65% response rate, with the city overall at about 60% of households that have responded.

Undercounts literally translate to lost revenue for much needed programs in our community. Programs such as public safety planning, including police and fire stations; hospitals and healthcare; food assistance programs; help for the homeless; highway planning; construction; public transit; emergency management; education and Head Start; school lunches; disaster response; and housing assistance are all funded through census counts and can be allocated to specific census tracts. That’s why it is so important that we get as much participation as possible, not just from the city as a whole, but from each census tract.

Over the next several weeks, Census staff will begin to visit households who haven’t responded. All staff will carry an ID badge with their name, photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark seal, and an expiration date. They will have an official Census Bureau-issued bag and tablet.

By Jenna-Lee Neff ONE OF THE FEW CRIMES WITHOUT A STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS IS A HOMICIDE. But time proves to be the enemy in many investigations, leading to a growing queue of cold cases. A new initiative by the Phoenix Police Department seeks to bring those cases back to the spotlight. “We want the community to understand that a homicide is never closed until it is solved,” explains Phoenix Police Sergeant Tommy Thompson. “Until that happens, the victims and their loved ones won’t have peace.” “Hot Desert, Cold Cases” brings cases handled by the Phoenix Police Cold Case Homicide Unit back to the community eye through short, informational episodes designed to jog the memory of viewers for potential leads. These videos and accompanying case information are also being shared on the department’s other social media profiles. “Getting attention out about the cases is important,” Thompson shares. “There may be witnesses who obtained information first, second, third or even forth hand. Someone may have heard someone talking about someone who heard someone talking.” Thompson shares that the department recently solved a cold case from 1978, and while victims’ families, former officers, and detectives on the case may have passed away, it is still important to try to put these cases to rest. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are spending more time at home, giving crime enthusiasts and even the general community the opportunity to dig in on older cases with fresh eyes. Thompson encourages people to not only look at “Hot Deserts, Cold Cases” but to also visit the Silent Witness website to view other cases. “I can envision people at home becoming super sleuths to try and solve the cases,” he says. “…Despite our

The first case featured in the initiative is the murder of Lynsey Chainhalt on June 13, 2003. The 20-year-old was the designated driver, taking herself and three friends home after attending a party in the East Valley.

She hopes that even though years have passed, someone will come forward with information to finally bring peace to the case. “I just don’t know how, if you had any knowledge of something like this, something so brutal, four people, four kids… how you could keep that in for

Retired Phoenix Police Detective William Schira, who spent the final 8.5 years of his career on the case, explained the events of the evening. “As they were going northbound on I-17, somebody in a dark-colored Tahoe or Blazer threw a beer bottle at them,” he says. The suspect’s car then followed Chainhalt to the area of 20th Street and Grovers where three Hispanic men got out and fired 19 rounds into the car, killing Chainhalt and injuring her friends. Suspects fled the scene and, aside from the other passengers in Chainhalt’s car, there are no known witnesses. Her friends were unable to identify the shooters and numerous leads have

Walmart’s drive-in tour will run through October. Additional details will be announced closer to the start of the tour. Ahead of each screening, Walmart will make it easy for families to fill their picnic baskets by ordering their drive-in essentials online for curbside pickup on the way to their movie. Sunsolar Solutions Helps Locals To Go Solar And Save Big

hen you think of renewable energy, the first type that may come to mind is solar power. Solar energy works by capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity through solar panels—and with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year—Phoenix is the perfect place for those considering supplementing some of their energy uses with solar power. In fact, according to recent statistics, solar panel installations are expected to grow 20% in 2020, consolidating the United States’ position as the world’s second-largest market for solar power usage. Better still, according to a recent Zillow.com study, homes with solar sold at an average 4% higher than non-solar homes. Michael O’Donnell, vice president of sales and co-owner of Sunsolar Solutions, says that his company has helped 6,000 Arizona families go solar—taking the power of the sun and turn it into usable electricity to power their homes. “We started in 2015 and, since then, have helped thousands to find custom solutions for their own needs to try to bring their power bill as close to zero as possible,” O’Donnell explains. O’Donnell compares having solar panels to someone “having their own personal power plant.” He notes that solar panels are often more affordable than people realize, with $0 down and options to purchase or lease the panels. “It’s a zero upfront cost, monthly payments are usually less than you’re paying for electricity, and, in time, the equipment pays for itself, and you make a monthly profit,” he says. “Your solar system allows you to generate your own clean power and costs less than your current utility company,” according to SunSolar

Solutions. “Flexible finance solutions allow you to simply pay by the month, like you do now, but at a lower rate and you start saving immediately.” How O’Donnell and the team at Sunsolar Solutions accomplish this is by meeting with each customer personally to assess how many panels their home will need. “We are upfront and transparent with customers; we don’t sell fake savings and our engineers will make sure that the solar panels work like we say they will,” O’Donnell says. “From the time we first meet with a potential customer, it takes about 60 days until the panels are on the roof and their system is ready.” Some benefits of going solar with Sunsolar Solutions include: • Flexible financial solutions – locals can lease, finance or purchase solar panels • No upfront costs • Customers can save up to 95% off of their electric bill • Protection against inflation and energy cost increases from the electric company • Increasing the property value • Earning a great return on your investment • Going green • Providing clean, reliable energy There are also several tax perks that come with going solar. “By increasing the number of panels, you increase the amount of money that the U.S. government will be investing in the system and into your home,” O’Donnell explains. “If the 100-percent design created a $10,000 subsidy, then the 150-percent design will produce a $15,000 subsidy. There is no limit to the size of the system and, therefore, the size of the tax credit. By the way, the tax credit is dropping significantly at the end of this year from its current rate, which is 26 percent of the system price.

Truth be told (which is something we insist on in our proposals),the result of a properly designed system is a lower monthly and annual cost for the household’s electricity.” O’Donnell shares the story of one of his recent local customers: “Janet from Peoria will pay $33,000 less to pay off the equipment than she would have paid APS. And the money she did spend didn’t turn into utility receipts; it turned into a paid-off $40,000 power plant that at the end of the term will be generating $7,500 worth of electricity per year. She has no doubt whatsoever that her home will be worth substantially more with a paidoff solar system, producing enough power to incur zero billing from APS, than it would have if she had spent much more buying that power from APS over the years.” The state of Arizona will also provide a tax credit in the amount of $1,000 when you purchase a system, he adds. This will lower your Arizona Department of Revenue total tax by $1,000 this year. Like the federal credit, it will carry over to future years if you don’t use it all this year, he says. In addition, for those with APS, O’Donnell says that there is a set limit of 15 percent of their customers who are able to have solar panels. Val Berechet, president of SunSolar Solutions, is urging his sales force to emphasize the urgency of switching because of this limit. He has set up a geographic database that will track what areas are approaching capacity or have already exceeded their maximum, according to SunSolar Solutions. Out of 17 applications submitted to TEP (a Tucson-based power company used as an example), after the utility started implementing the maximum on May 12, four have already been denied, signaling possibly maxed-out service areas, Berechet explains. He

expects other areas in Arizona to hit their maximum quickly, though it is too early to know where and when with any specificity, he adds. “The essential environmental and economic factors still favor solar power in Arizona,” according to Sunsolar Solutions. The state has the third lowest cost per watt for solar panels, and it has the secondhighest potential solar resources, just after Nevada, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, cites the company. O’Donnell shares that the cut off to go solar when you have APS could be as soon as the end of this month. This is especially true these days while kids are largely stuck at home during the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fostering a love of art, creativity, and scientific exploration is a great way to keep your youngsters thinking and growing mentally, socially, intellectually, and emotionally. No matter how you encourage your children to express themselves and their interests, the act of creating and learning will help your child grow and develop. Fortunately for us, Arizona is home to some of the most unique sights to see and places to visit in the world. Most of the local museums are temporarily closed, but if you want to get the kids out of the house for a while and do something fun and educational, we found a few local venues that are open to the public right now. Be sure to call ahead or check them out online before you go, but these businesses are currently welcoming visitors, so put on your masks and give them your support. HEARD MUSEUM heard.org Founded in 1929, the Heard is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming,

ODYSEA AQUARIUM odyseaaquarium.com The state of the art OdySea Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Southwest. It boasts two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits, and over 30,000 sea creatures, not to mention one of the best shark-watching restrooms in the Valley. Visiting NATIONAL MONUMENTS IN ARIZONA

rizona is known for its abundant natural beauty and majestic scenery. Many of our fantastic natural resources and awe-inspiring historical sights are specially preserved for the public as National Monuments. While National Parks are created through acts of Congress and must be large enough for broad recreational and educational use by the public, National Monuments are created by presidential declaration and have historic, prehistoric, or scientific interest.

MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT, CAMP VERDE

TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENT, CLARKDALE Another fascinating example of the history of desert people in the Southwest is Tuzigoot National Monument. Visitors cannot only see the ruins of an ancient village built by the Sinagua people, they can walk through the rooms and touch the walls of the structure. The monument is north of Phoenix just outside Cottonwood, nestled at the foot of the mountain near Jerome. Tuzigoot is a fantastic day trip for sightseeing and a definite stop if you are planning to visit the Verde Valley.

There are officially 22 National Park Service units in Arizona, visited by nearly 12 million people and bringing in around $1 billion in economic impact annually. Thirteen of these areas are designated as National Monuments, and many of our favorite sites are just a short drive from the Valley of the Sun. CASA GRANDE RUINS NATIONAL MONUMENT, COOLIDGE

Just south of Chandler on the way to Tucson, you will find one of the largest freestanding prehistoric structures built in North America. Although its original purpose remains a mystery, this site is culturally and scientifically significant. It may have been gathering place, a community, or a waypoint marker for an extensive system of canals and trade routes. Regardless of its original purpose, the majestic “Great House” at Casa Grande Ruins is a well-preserved piece of Sonoran Desert history and a must see National Monument in Arizona. myhyperlocalnews.com

If you want to head north of the Valley of the Sun, Montezuma Castle National Monument is an easy stop off Highway I-17 near Camp Verde. One of the best-preserved and most easily accessible cliff dwellings in North America, this is a beautiful place to stop on the road between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Take a break or have a picnic and enjoy the shady trees near the Verde River while taking in a breathtaking piece of Southwestern history. TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT, ROOSEVELT East of the Valley and nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain and view ancient Salado-style cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved but steep path up the mountain. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a 3-4 hour guided tour, so plan to book your visit in advance. This National Monument is a bit off the beaten path, but its historic significance and the breath-taking views of

WALNUT CANYON NATIONAL MONUMENT, FLAGSTAFF Just south of I-40 outside of Flagstaff, Walnut Canyon National Monument is a scenic and historic place to visit in the tall pines of Northern Arizona. Take a hike among the ruins and cliff dwellings in the upper elevations on both easy rim trails and more difficult trails down into the canyon. This National Monument allows visitors to walk along canyon walls and through the actual pueblos of prehistoric desert inhabitants. It’s an amazing site to stop and enjoy between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Each of the National Monuments in Arizona is a special place to visit.
