SOUL SANCTUARY WORKS TO BREAK CYCLE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
S
oul Sanctuary in the Desert is a unique volunteer driven non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization. Dedicated to actively working with at-risk families to break the generational cycle of substance abuse and domestic violence through its support of women and children. Some transitional housing programs are established as forprofit businesses, grouping three
to four adults in each bedroom to maximize income. Women with small children are often unable to find space and support within this type of transitional living program. With this knowledge in hand, in 2004 Soul Sanctuary opened its first non-profit housing program for women, allowing mothers and children to have their own bedroom and personal space.
Women participating in the program are required to address their personal issues of addiction and co-dependence, and to demonstrate continued progress and development during their enrollment. Programs range from six months to two years and are focused on helping the women meet specific goals such as getting
a job, attending a trade school or completing an associates degree.
The program has been successful in changing lives because women are required to develop and follow their own personal program, which they have created with the help and supervision of facilitators. This approach empowers and guides the individual as they choose the services they need. Participants are required to par-
ticipate in physical, psychological and spiritual programs, as well as activities that enhance positive interaction with their children. This begins their family healing process, allowing the women to break the cycle of abuse and codependence that they risk teaching to their young children. THE SHOPS AT NORTERRA BRINGS SUMMER SKATING TO NORTH PHOENIX NORTH PHOENIX RESIDENTS WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO CHILL OUT THIS SUMMER AT THE SHOPS AT NORTERRA’S NEW LIMITEDTIME ATTRACTION, CHILL STUDIO SK8. The indoor skating experience from Chill Entertainment features 1,500 square feet of synthetic ice-like surface, complete with skate rentals, music and lights, plus cabana rentals and other amenities. “Just in time for the arrival of the 100 degree days, Studio SK8 will offer a fun escape from the summer heat,” said The Shops at Norterra marketing director Jillian Jones. “We are thrilled to be bringing a completely unique summer activity to the North Phoenix community.”

Initially, the attraction will be open Thursday through Sunday afternoons and evenings, but additional dates and times may be added, as well as special events such as skate-in movies and teens-only nights. Kids ages 4 and over can enjoy a 90-minute skating session for just $6, including skate rental (accompanying adults pay just $4 per session). Kids under 4 can learn to skate during special “tot” sessions for just $6. Kids ages 6-13 can also attend a 3.5-hour “Chill Camp,” where they will learn to skate plus enjoy games and activities, for $25 per day. Families and groups can save by renting a “Chill Suite” for just $25, which includes a skating session for 5 guests plus a private seating area. Kids can even celebrate their birthday at Chill Studio SK8 with “The Big Chill” – a 90-minute private skating session for up to 25 guests, plus a party host, for $99. Best of all, 10 percent of all proceeds will be donated to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Chill Studio SK8 is a production of Chill

So far in 2017, customers at the 15 MVD offices in metro Phoenix and Tucson are averaging fewer than 30 minutes from the moment they enter an office to the time they leave ‒ a trend that began in February and continues today. This improvement is due in large part to the successful implementation of the Arizona Management System (AMS). Championed by Gov. Doug Ducey, AMS empowers employees
at every level of the MVD to come up with innovative ways to serve customers more efficiently.
our offices run more efficiently in keeping with our vision to get people out of line and safely on the road,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “That vision is more than just an idea. It’s the reality being played out every business day at MVD where our customers are getting more of their valuable time back to do the things they want to do.”
“The Motor Vehicle Division has embraced the AMS philosophy of finding change for the better, and we’re seeing impressive results,” said ADOT Director John Halikowski. “Instead of making customers sit and wait for a number to be called, we have employees answering questions and providing assistance. We’ve expanded office hours in all our urban offices. We offer more services online and at MVD kiosks. The end result is a much shorter amount of time most people need to spend when they visit an MVD office, and more innovations are on the way.”
A year ago, a visit to an MVD office in the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas would typically take almost one hour. Today urban offices are consistently showing an average experience time of fewer than 30 minutes. In some locations, the average time from when a customer enters the office to the time he or she leaves is closer to 20 minutes.

In the month of March, for example, MVD experienced an exceptionally high amount of customer traffic with an average of nearly 9,400 daily transactions, while the offices still managed to keep the urban experience time below 30 minutes. Another stunning improvement is the wait time in the lobby, or the time it takes from when a customer is given a service number and called to a counter to complete a transaction. In July 2016, 70 percent of urban MVD customers waited more than 15 minutes; as of May this year, that figure was below 25 percent.

MIM CELEBRATES TEACHERS DURING EDUCATOR APPRECIATION MONTH: FREE ADMISSION, OPPORTUNITIES, AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO EDUCATORS IN JULY THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF JULY, THE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM (MIM) IS THANKING TEACHERS FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO ARIZONA STUDENTS DURING ITS EDUCATOR APPRECIATION MONTH. From July 1 to 31, prekindergarten through 12th-grade educators, administrators, principals, registered student teachers, and homeschool educators with a school ID, fingerprint clearance card, or affidavit of intent are welcome to explore MIM for free and discover how to incorporate a MIM field trip into their curriculum. New this year, educators can participate in a free teacher’s workshop on Saturday, July 8, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., as part of Experience France, a family-friendly weekend program celebrating French music and
culture. Teachers can practice how to leverage a museum space such as MIM to support English Language Arts and Social Studies standards. The workshop will introduce participants to new and fun ways to spark discussion among students, using maps, musical objects, video clips, and timelines throughout MIM’s galleries. After the workshop, teachers can receive a certificate for professional development hours and enjoy the cultural activities during Experience France. On Saturday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., MIM will host Teachers’ Preview Day, which is also free to educators. The event features a welcome program, a live musical performance, professional development modules, supportive educator resources, prize drawings, and more. Participants are encouraged to preregister to attend. Bring a colleague
and each of you will receive an additional prize drawing entry! Throughout MIM’s galleries, displays are enhanced by state-of-the-art audio and video technologies that create an engaging experience for students as they explore the world through music. Field trips, which include both guided and self-guided options, align with Arizona’s K–12 academic standards in English language arts, math, social studies, science, music, physical education, and visual arts. Last year, MIM saw nearly fifty-eight thousand field-trip participants come through its doors. COVER STORY TRANSFORMING CLASSIC CARS PHOENIX BUSINESS HELPS CUSTOMERS RESTORE THE PAST By Dave Ficere
F
ans of the Transformer film franchise will want to pay special attention to the setting in the new Transformers 5 movie. That’s because much of it takes place at the Phoenix location of Desert Valley Auto Parts. [The movie crew] “used our location as their base camp and set during the three months of filming.,” owner Jason McClure says, “and we weren’t able to talk about it or anything going on with the filming.” The latest installment in the franchise, starring Mark Walberg, hits theaters on June 23. Desert Valley is the largest antique car junkyard in the world and gained a lot of notoriety from their appearance on the Discovery Channel’s hit Reality TV show, “Desert Car Kings.” “It was huge and everyone thinks
we got paid a ton of money for it,” McClure says, “but that wasn’t the case.” What it was, he added, is the kind of exposure that money can’t buy. The show featured cars that were restored during the episodes and later auctioned through one of Desert Valley’s sister companies, 5 Star Auto Auction. While other companies specialize in specific cars, Desert Valley is the only one that handles all classic American cars from the 1970s and earlier. Founded in 1993, Desert Valley Auto Parts has become famous for its 40 acres of entire cars and parts to cars many collectors thought they could never find. McClure says his family has always been in the wrecking business and he simply branched off into the antique business. Operated on two lots – the main facility in the Deer Valley area north of downtown Phoenix and a second facility south of Phoenix in Casa Grande – “DVAP,” as it’s affectionately called, is an auto parts treasure with customers from literally around the world. A third location – in Black Canyon City – is currently being rebuilt after a fire gutted the facility. Customers are generally amazed and impressed by the amount of classic car inventory on both DVAP lots – with so many that not every car and car part has been
able to be inventoried online – yet. “The selection is so big,” McClure says, “that if you do search our online inventory and don’t find what you’re looking for, don’t stop there.” In that case, customers can fill out the “Request a Part” form. “Our staff loves cars, but even more so they love a search challenge and they will scour the yards looking for a requested item,” McClure adds. “You’d be amazed at what we’ve been able to find.” And it doesn’t stop there. McClure tirelessly searches the nation for classic cars hidden away and acquires them for the yard, meanly DVAP’s current stock is constantly growing. So what is the allure about classic cars? In one sense, McClure says, it’s people wanting the cars they drove in high school to relive their past. Especially among Baby Boomers who grew up in the 60s and 70s and want to go back to those cars they drove then. For example, the man who is now in his 60s who fondly remembers
the 1964 Mustang he drove in his teens. In addition to some people wanting to relive their childhoods, McClure says parents often want to restore cars either for or with their children. And, because nostalgia is also a part of it, McClure says car makers are picking up on that, producing new cars with the classic or “retro” look and feel. “In the old days, most people needed a part to get or keep their car running,” McClure says. “Now, people want parts to restore their cars and Arizona is great for car parts” because we don’t have the weather extremes that damage cars in other parts of the country. Below are five “cool” places to check out when the heat is too much to handle. 1. OATMAN, ARIZONA It might not be cooler, but it is a cool place to check out. Oatman, Arizona was founded as a mining town in the late 1800s. After the mining stopped, the town stayed alive by becoming a tourist destination for Route 66 travelers. KARTCHNER CAVERNS Summer fun is not reserved only for northern Arizona! The Kartchner Caverns are a mystifying beauty located in Benson in southeast Arizona. 3. WIGWAM HOTELS & THE PETRIFIED FOREST It’s time to show northern Arizona some love. Because if we’re being honest, their summer temperatures rock. If you’re a fan of the Disney movie “Cars,” you’ll want to head to Holbrook, Arizona to see the Wigwam Hotel and Petrified Forest. The hotel is believed to be Disney’s inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel in “Cars.” There are often classic cars parked in front that look a lot like the cars in Radiator Springs, making the stay lots of fun. FLAGSTAFF OBSTACLE COURSE Flagstaff is a prime place for a day trip. There is great food, fun things to do and, most important, cooler weather. T
he Shops at Norterra is helping Valley school children avoid the “summer slide” and keep up their reading skills during summer break. Now through July 31, kids ages 6 to 12 are encouraged to read every day and track the number of minutes they read to earn prizes from participating stores and restaurants.
Studies show that when students don’t read over the summer months, they lose core reading skills and fall behind when they return to school – an occurrence known as the “summer slide.” In fact, a study by Oxford Learning found that children can lose up to two months of reading performance during the summer, which if continued throughout the elementary school years, can result in those students being two and a half years behind by the time they reach middle school.
The Shops at Norterra’s Summer Reading Rewards program provides an opportunity for kids to track the number of minutes they read independently each day on a reading log. They can then turn in their reading logs at the Norterra Management Office after reaching each Reading Rewards Level and receive a prize. There are four reward levels, and the number of minutes of reading needed to reach each level depends on the child’s grade.

EXTREME HEAT FORECAST, PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR VEHICLE
W
ith extreme heat in the forecast, it’s especially important for drivers to plan before taking to state highways, starting with having a fully charged cellphone as well as extra drinking water for all passengers, including pets.
Even though your vehicle has air conditioning, be ready in case you must spend extended time on the highway due to a breakdown or some other reason for delay. That starts with having sun protection, including sunscreen, an umbrella for shade, a wide-brimmed hat and loosefitting, lightcolored cotton clothing. Keep your tank at three-quarters full. Running out of gas, especially in a remote location, is dangerous in extreme heat. Take a cooler to keep extra
drinking water cold, and consider adding several frozen bottles of water to use for cooling off or to thaw and drink if needed. If your vehicle breaks down in extreme heat, call for assistance right away to reduce wait time, and run the AC. If the AC isn’t working, roll down all windows. Other recommendations if you are stranded along the highway: • DRINK WATER. Make sure everyone, including pets, stays hydrated. • If temperatures inside the vehicle become too hot, everyone, including pets, should exit carefully and seek out or create a shaded area as far away from the travel lanes as possible.
• Be careful walking on the road surface, which can be hot enough to burn skin. Keep your shoes on and try to keep your pets’ paws off the pavement. • Raise the front hood and turn on hazard lights. You can help avoid breakdowns and blowouts by making sure your vehicle is in good operating condition. Check your air conditioner and coolant levels, top off any vital engine fluids and make sure your battery is up to par. ummer is in full swing and, as all Phoenicians know, it will be a hot time in the Valley for the next several months. Even with the heat of the summer, Phoenix has tons of fun nature, science and learning activities for people of all ages. Here is a list of a few activities to help you keep cool during the hot summer months! WILDLIFE WORLD ZOO This is one of our family’s favorite places to visit, all year round. While much of the zoo is outside in the heat, it has one very important feature to make it appealing in the summer months – air conditioned indoor aquariums. This zoo has something for everyone - animals and a petting zoo, as well as a playground, safari tram, train, sky ride, log ride, boat ride and dozens of new amusement park rides in their new Adventureland area. With the largest collection of exotic animals in Arizona, $40 per adult and $20 per child may be a little pricey, but it is well worth the cost. Plus you can almost always find good discounts and coupons online and around town, and the annual membership pays for itself in as little as three visits.

Tickets are $22 at the door, but discounted when purchasing online in advance or in combo packages with the SeaLife Aquarium. BUTTERFLY WONDERLAND Butterfly Wonderland is America’s largest butterfly conservatory and is definitely a great experience for the whole family. This indoor venue is $21.95 for adults and $14.95 for children, but be sure to look for discounts online. The facility is located right next door to the new OdySea Aquarium and combo packages are available for both venues. They also host birthday parties and other activities. ODYSEA AQUARIUM Next door to Butterfly Wonderland is the newly opened, state of the art OdySea Aquarium. The largest aquarium in the southwest, it boasts
two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits and over 30,000 sea creatures. Ticket prices start at $34.95 for adults and $24.95 for children 3-17, but combo packages and annual passes are also available, as well as discounted evening hours and Family Meal packages. Separate tours and encounters are available for an additional adventure, including a Behind the Scenes tour, an underwater SeaTrek, and a special Penguin Interaction Program. SEALIFE AQUARIUM There are many things to love about the SeaLife Aquarium, located in Arizona Mills shopping center. One of the best things about it during the summer is that it’s indoors. The aquarium prices are $19 per person, but run as low as $11 when tickets are purchased online in advance. SeaLife also offers discounts for combination tickets with Legoland Discovery Center, as well as group packages and memberships. Gross Lease: A type of rent calculation where the rent includes the base rent and all expenses (taxes, insurance and operating expenses). Expense increases each year of the lease will be passed onto the tenant in the form of expense pass through. Net Lease or often times called a Triple Net Lease (NNN): A type of rent calculation where the rent cost is split up into a Base Rent amount and separate expenses called Triple Net (NNN). Typically, expenses are placed in three categories: taxes, insurance, and operating expenses. The term “triple net,” which is also written “NNN,” means that the tenant pays all expenses as a separate

THE “HIDDEN” COSTS OF SELLING A HOME By Amanda Ventura

Before you exchange the keys and title, you get the car washed, waxed and maybe even vacuumed. Similar care needs to be done for a home before putting it up for sale. For many first-time home sellers, who make up
Americans spend an average of $15,000 to make their home ready to sell, according to Zillow. That can seem like a huge hidden cost. “If you have an experienced Real-
tor on your side, you shouldn’t have any hidden costs,” says HomeSmart Realtor Neil Brooks. “The Realtor will evaluate the home prior to listing it and advise which cosmetic or mechanical repairs will provide the most return on investment.” Brooks has sold more than 620 homes, which allows him to be extremely accurate when advising his clients on what it will take to get the most profit on the sale. Brooks says the average home in Phoenix costs closer to $2,500 to $3,500 to make it “show ready” -- not $15,000. Other than the costs of getting the home “show ready” there are two other “unknown” costs sellers don’t anticipate – the appraisal and repairs. When a home goes under contract and the buyer is getting a mortgage, the bank will require an appraisal for value on the home.
“We have a high number of homes where the deals fall apart because sellers are feeling confident and pricing their homes way above what they will actually appraise for,” Brooks says. “When a home fails to appraise, the seller will have to agree to sell the home for the appraised value - not what was agreed to on the contract. The difference can be thousands, and, in some cases, tens of thousands of dollars.” Brooks’ best advice to sellers is to: • Once the home goes under contract, don’t go back to living your “normal” lifestyle. You must keep the home in the same “show ready” condition it was in when selling it, especially when the appraiser comes out. • Conduct a professional home inspection of the property. That report can be used as leverage in negotiating the repairs requested by a buyer.

Reviewed by A.D. Beal BAYWATCH Baywatch is yet another “80’s tv show rebooted as a raunchy comedy” that the Jump Street movies made so popular. The film seems to think that said comedy is all you need, because it does not offer any likable characters or a storyline that hasn’t been repeated a million times before. The idea in general just seems pointless. Honestly, how many people were asking for a Baywatch movie?
WONDER WOMAN If you were disappointed by the previous DCEU entries (I personally like Man Of Steel and Suicide Squad), then Wonder Woman will be the film you’ve been waiting for. Gal Gadot is perfect as Diana Prince, and her chemistry with Chris Pine is believable. Even the supporting cast are distinctly interesting. It does follow a few tropes, and it’s villains are very forgettable (outside of Dr. Poison). But aside from that, director Patty Jenkins (Monster) delivers in her sophomore effort.
THE MUMMY There is a lot of exciting potential in Universal’s reboot of their classic monsters (or the Dark Universe as they’re calling it). The Mummy, however, is a very underwhelming start to the series. While Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond) and Russell Crowe give it their all, the rest of the characters are either poorly written or miscast. The action is rather bland, and when the film goes for a suspenseful or scary scene, it falls short. All of this is a shame really because it had a lot of good talent behind it. I’d also recommend not seeing it in 3D… it’s terrible.
IT COMES AT NIGHT A couple and their son isolate themselves after the outbreak of an unknown plague, but their secluded existence is threatened when a young family seeks shelter. It Comes At Night is not a horror movie like the trailers would say, and is instead a psychological thriller and drama, with some elements of horror. And it’s also very abstract and doesn’t give many answers, so it may not be a film for everyone. But it’s an excellent film nonetheless, with each member of the cast giving pitch perfect performances. It’s visuals are also excellent (despite a glaring aspect ratio change).

THINGS TO DO FIREWORKS TO ENJOY DURING JULY
A
nthem celebrates its 18th annual Independence Day Celebration July 3 in Community Park from 6-10 p.m. The popular event includes wet and dry rides, inflatables, food vendors, a DJ/dancing, fireworks and more. Dry rides and inflatables will be on Softball Field #1; water rides will be located on Softball Fields #2 and #3. Each individual is required to have a wristband to ride the slides or use the inflatables; they are available for an early-bird price of $12 during June at the Anthem Community Center, 41130 N. Freedom Way. Wristbands also will be available for purchase at the event for $15 each. Wristbands are non-refundable and non-replaceable. The event will conclude with the National Anthem and the fireworks finale at 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.

usinesses in Cave Creek are teaming up to host two early celebrations in honor of Independence Day, complete with fireworks, on Sat., July 1 and Mon., July 3. Both events are free to attend and open to the public.
The “3rd of July Fireworks Extravaganza” will start at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 3. The celebration is sponsored by Harold’s Corral, 6895 E. Cave Creek Rd., Roadhouse, 6900 E. Cave Creek Rd., and The Buffalo Chip Saloon, 6811 E Cave Creek Rd., in Cave Creek. With the help of Rural Metro, the fireworks are safely shot off from a hill behind Harold’s, beginning just after sunset. As one of the largest fireworks displays in the Valley, the “3rd of July Fireworks Extravaganza” is one of the most exhilarating shows in the state. The celebration before the fireworks will include live music, kid’s activities, and food and drink specials at all three restaurants. Admission is free and on a first come first serve basis. A free shuttle service will be available to transport people around town from 6 p.m. to midnight.
