ocated in downtown Phoenix, one local organization has been helping thousands of each women year to positively transform their lives by providing education, resources and support. Fresh Start Women’s Foundation began in 1992 as the vision of two sisters’: Pat Petznick and Beverly Stewart. These two sisters wanted to help women reach their full potential through setting personal and professional goals. In 2002, the Jewell McFarland Lewis Resource Center was built as a refuge for women of all walks of life to access a wide range of services, classes, and programs designed to teach self-confidence, life skills, and career development. “We see women from every socioeconomic and cultural background, each with unique life experiences,” says President and CEO Susan Berman. “Our goal is to support each woman who comes through our doors and help her with the support and resources she needs most to take the next step on her path forward.” Women come to Fresh Start from a number of different situations. CITY NEWS COMPASSION IN THE COMMUNITY by Dave McMinn

AS FIREFIGHTERS EXTINGUISHED THE LAST OF THE FLAMES, THE MOOD AMONGST THOSE WHO HAD GATHERED BEGAN TO CHANGE. What started out as shock and curiosity turned into something different once everyone realized that a family’s lives would be immediately changed, and changed forever. In the North Phoenix community of Fireside at Norterra, a recent house fire left one home uninhabitable. While the family escaped injury, the structural damage from the flames, smoke, and water left them - quite literally out on the streets. It was in that moment that hearts began to open up. Friends, neighbors, and even total strangers stepped up to assist the homeowners, who were now trying to navigate life away from their home. In the weeks following the fire, there has been a true outpouring of compassion. A GoFundMe page was launched by a resident of a neighboring community to help raise money and provide immediate assistance. People responded with gift of $20, $50… even $100 at a time (At the time this article was published, the donation page had been nearing its $2,000 goal). An especially heartwarming aspect of this story is that help has been coming from not only the grownups. Even the youngest of neighbors felt compelled to lend a 4 • May 2018 • DEER VALLEY TIMES

hand. Ashlee, Kylee and Madison, three little girls with big hearts, set up an oldfashioned lemonade stand, donating their proceeds to the victims of the fire. Glass by glass, the girls raised nearly $200 in just a couple of hours (with the lemonade receiving rave reviews). But the generosity from fellow residents did not end there… On a recent Sunday afternoon, 10-yearold Abby came home from church inspired to help the cause. She and her little brother, Matthew, opted to forgo their normal weekend playtime for an afternoon spent collecting donations from the driveway of their home. Their proud parents, Amanda and Marc, provided the “marketing support” by getting the word out on social media. And it wasn’t just friends who filled the donation box. Money came from unfamiliar faces who saw the online posts and drove over to contribute. By day’s end, Abby and Matthew brought in $685.25! Heartfelt gifts for a worthy cause.

In the midst of turmoil, a family hit with tragedy found themselves surrounded by neighbors who were there not to watch the fire, but to support them. It’s times like this we realize there is much good in the world, and it’s often found right in our own community. This is North Phoenix at its best. NEW MEDICARE CARDS ARE ON THEIR WAY!

ere is valuable information you need to know about your new Medicare card, and ways to avoid related scams: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is currently mailing new Medicare ID cards through April 2019, as part of an effort from CMS to help protect the beneficiary’s identity and to prevent fraud. The new card is free and will have a unique, 11-character combination of letters and numbers randomly assigned to you, that has no connection to your other personal data. It will still be red, white, and blue, but will not include your Social Security number or other information that could compromise your identity. The mailing process won’t cost you anything. It is expected to take up to a year and will be done at various times throughout the country. Don’t be surprised if your card arrives at a different time than your spouse, friend, or neighbor. In Arizona, the new

cards are expected to begin being mailed after June 2018. When the new card arrives, shred your old card and begin using your new card immediately. It’s important that you provide your hospital, doctor, pharmacist, and/or other health care provider with the new card when you need medications, hospital, medical, or any other health services. If you do not have your new card with you when it is needed, the provider may be able to look up your Medicare number online. It’s important to note that the card is proof that you have Medicare coverage. As far as your current Medicare coverage, it should not be affected, and benefits will remain unchanged. Your current insurance ID cards should also not change or be reissued because of this transition; keep both your new Medicare card and your insurance ID card. If you want to ensure that your address is correct, or if you need to make a change, you can contact the Social Security Administration Office (which will be preparing and mailing the cards) at ssa.gov/ myaccount or you may call 800-772-1213. There are scammers with new tactics who have already targeted people and tried to trick them into sharing their personal information. CMS will not call a beneficiary for private or personal information in order for you to get your new Medicare number and/ or card. Use caution when giving your new Medicare number to others; be sure that you trust them to work with Medicare on your behalf, such as doctors or other health providers, pharmacists, insurers. If someone asks you for your personal information or for money, or if they threaten to cancel your health benefits if you don’t share that

personal information, hang up immediately. Also remember to guard your Medicare card and number, and don’t give personal information in exchange for your Medicare card. If you need additional information, you may choose to speak with a licensed and certified professional agent at no cost to you. We are avid hikers and love to find fun adventures around Arizona, both indoors and outdoors. But we have yet to take our daughter camping. I believe in planning ahead and finding out what the experts have to say. There are many great websites and articles on the subject, but one of my very best resources is my dear friend Carol Satran. She and her family of six are true experts on all things camping, fishing and hunting in Arizona. They spend more time enjoying camping and the outdoors with their kids than anyone I know!

CAROL SHARED HER BEST TIPS FOR CAMPING WITH KIDS: • Start taking the kids camping when they are young. This makes a lot of sense – camping means that your kids are in a completely different environment with different habits, times and amenities. Be sure you prepare your kids for being outside in different types of weather and have a lot of patience as they learn and adapt to a new environment. • Involve everyone in packing. This includes packing beforehand, setting up the campsite, breaking camp and putting camping gear away when you get home. Getting your kids involved in the packing and unpacking process helps them be a part of the whole camping experience. Kids want to be involved and including them in packing and unpacking keeps them interested and helps them learn the ins and outs of camping. • Bring cards, a checker game and a

board game or two to play. It’s important to be prepared for the inevitable changes in plans and these activities are always handy on a rainy afternoon (especially at places like Big Lake in July). • Bring bicycles. Carol’s kids love riding their bikes at Big Lake and around other camping areas across the state (we love to ride at the Grand Canyon). It’s great entertainment and a quick, easy alternative to hiking longer distances. • Bring your best trivia, stories and games. Sitting around the campfire sharing stories or playing games (for example, the alphabet game naming animals) is a fun way to pass the time and enjoy spending time with your family. Carol’s family also loves to play the Alaska trivia game, since they have been there so many times. • Don’t forget the S’mores! Of course this goes without saying.

WHERE ARE THE BEST PLACES TO CAMP? Here are some of Carol’s favorite campsites to get her family outside, breathing the fresh air and seeing the beauty of nature in Arizona: Big Lake Big Lake, Arizona is located in the White Mountains of North Eastern Arizona, near the Sunrise Ski area. They are open from mid-April to midNovember, as weather permits (they are snowed in during the winter). Blue Ridge Campground The Blue Ridge Campground is located near Happy Jack, AZ. It’s one of the many campgrounds in the Coconino National Forest and is about 5 miles north of Blue Ridge Reservoir.

Wet Beaver Creek Campground Located east of Sedona, near Camp Verde, the Wet Beaver Creek Campground is open year round. Situated right between Montezuma’s Castle and Montezuma’s Well, this is one of

several campgrounds in the area. Many of the trails lead right into the heart of Sedona, and fantastic archeological sites are plentiful. Her family also loves many of the campsites between Cottonwood and Sedona, camping at Lake Powell, sites outside of Flagstaff, and Dogtown Lake near Williams, AZ. And don’t forget to check out Arizona State Parks and one of the many National Parks in our state. Both have fantastic resources, great campgrounds and really good information about camping on their websites. Before you head out to go camping, take time to prepare for your trip. Pack all of the food, clothing and equipment you will need. Watch the weather and pack appropriate clothing and gear. Stay in designated areas, pack out all of your garbage and keep your cell phone handy for emergencies. Make sure your kids understand the rules for camping, hiking and the outdoors, and check the local websites for your campground to look for alerts or special announcements. PARENTS BRING CHARTER SCHOOL DREAM TO FRUITION

he vision for Adams Traditional Academy began at a kitchen table with a group of parents who wanted to incorporate some of their own ideas into starting a charter school. The parents drew from their wide array of backgrounds and their belief in traditional education to set the foundation for the public charter school’s approach and philosophy. These parents believed that students could accomplish the extraordinary if they mastered the basics. That means if the school integrated phonics, civics, history, cursive writing and Latin with art and science, it could spark their creativity. Nearly a decade later, Adams Traditional, has grown into an A-rated K-8 school and one of the top public schools in the state. “We want to make sure they have those basic skills because the research shows that if they have those basic skills, their creative juices will kick in,” said Lisa

Fink, Board President for Choice Academies, Inc., which operates Adams Traditional. Fink was one of eight parents who gathered around that kitchen table years ago to help form the blueprint for their future school. Adam Traditional Academy’s success is the fruit of some hard labor undertaken by the parents when they set out to open the school years ago. The group researched specific programs to use as part of the school’s curriculum, adopting a math program from Singapore, a language arts program that emphasizes phonemic awareness and lab-based science lessons. Today, it’s not uncommon for students to work on an assignment combining their work from history, science or language arts with art, music or technology. They also wanted to heavily emphasize civics and history, including the Constitution, founding fathers and past presidents of the United States. Adams Traditional kindergartners recently finished

a “President’s Project,” studying each President and First Lady. The culmination of the project included well developed displays of the findings and even dressing up in presidential costumes.

With support from the federal Charter Schools Program grant, Adams Traditional founders were able to find and furnish their first facility, partnering with the Arizona Charter Schools Association and Charter School Development Corporation to search for properties. After encountering some obstacles, the school found its current campus in North Phoenix’s Deer Valley area, which featured a brand-new building that sat vacant during the recession. The school eventually expanded the existing building and constructed another facility on the site. “We went in phases because we didn’t want to build a huge facility and not have the revenue to be able to sustain it,” The school now enrolls about 660 students and includes a preschool. Although it’s grown in both size and academics, Adams Traditional still

“This is a community center with the parents and the other kids,” said Cindy Richards, whose seventh-grade son attends the school. “This is where his friends are, this is where a lot of my friends are.” Richards, who has served on the school’s site council and parent teacher organization, sought out Adams Traditional because she was looking for an alternative to her son’s neighborhood school. “They talked about hands-on, having a science lab, art and what they were learning in history, they would do a project in art involving that. They would tie the disciplines together,” she said. “They promoted good citizenship. It’s important to raise kids that are going to make a good, healthy contribution to the world.” Richards knows the school is challenging her son to rise academically and that it will pay dividends in the future. “He knows he’s supposed to work hard and strive,” she said. “It just sets him up academically for a good path in life.”

o say that Deer Valley job growth is booming is an understatement. North PhoenixDeer Valley has quickly grown to be a financial services and financial technology corridor of Grand Canyon proportions and is becoming known as ‘Wall Street West.’

USAA is adding 1,000 technology jobs and several hundred support positions because of their workforce expansions here. Farmers Insurance is moving 400 employees from around the Valley to Deer Valley and will add 400 to 600 more workers over the next three years to its satellite headquarters. Paychex recently announced that they selected Deer Valley for their corporate west or second headquarters, adding 300 employees to the 500 that are already here. deervalleytimes.com

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A ZIP CODE MAKES By Shelley Sakala

he real estate market runs in cycles. If you’re a homeowner, you happen to be in the middle of pretty good one. The median sales price of existing homes in the U.S. has risen steadily for the past six years (great news for anyone waiting on home values to recover from 2008 levels). We’ve seen a similar trend in the Deer Valley and Norterra areas. But it’s important to understand the real estate market on a local level. Each zip code has its own nuances in terms of market conditions and value. And sometimes local conditions vary greatly from the national or even citywide trends. For example, look at the primary areas served by this publication: Deer Valley

and the Norterra area. While the price per square foot has been almost identical, actual price points vary significantly. For starters, Deer Valley has inventory selling for less than $200,000 (a price point nonexistent in the Norterra area). Norterra has inventory in the luxury home market, while Deer Valley does not. That’s not to say there aren’t nice homes in Deer Valley – it just means the homes there are more affordable. According to the current rate-of-sale vs. available inventory, Deer Valley is currently rated as a strong seller’s market. By comparison, Norterra is a slight seller’s advantage.* So if you’re a Deer Valley home owner, you may be in a stronger position than a Norterra homeowner. But it’s all relative – For a budget of $200,000, Norterra offers no

the Deer Valley Airpark are lease spec projects and most are already receiving plenty of lease activity.

The four Southwest Property Ventures speculative industrial buildings available for sale on 19th Avenue just south of Pinnacle Peak completed in January all went into escrow prior to completion. This type of activity was unheard of just a year ago. Building industrial spec buildings starting in 2008 to 2015 was also extremely rare. The tide has turned and demand is high. The 8 spec buildings SPV developed on the SEC of 19th Ave and Pinnacle Peak and the 8 built at Spectrum Ridge all sold or are currently in escrow. These 16 office/warehouse buildings were all built spec and were all between approximately 10,000 sq. ft. and 15,000 sq. ft. There are currently no more available in this market. There are currently only seven properties that have available buildings/industrial condos for sale between 500 sq. ft. and 4,000 sq. ft. There are also only seven office/warehouse buildings available for purchase over 4,000 sq. ft. up to 20,000 sq. ft. None of these are new products. Those end-users seeking to purchase between 4,000 and 12,000 sq. ft. have very limited options today. We are truly in a sellers’ market. Demand is high and inventory is low. Pricing has also seen a steady climb. New construction in the industrial office/warehouse product has increased to approximately $140 psf for purchase and $0.75 to $0.85 psf (NNN) for lease. Of course, second generation is about 10% to 15% lower and there are still a few bargains to be had but they are much harder to find today. We should expect increased new development in the Airpark over the next few years to catch up with demand. Historically Deer Valley Airpark has been a very productive market for most developers. There has been numerous multi-tenant lease product built over the last year but very little sale product. Buyers will be hard pressed to find what they need or want and will have to pay a premium if they do or look to lease. NICE WEATHER FOR YOU BUT NOT YOUR PET By Michael Morefield

ith a fur coat and limited cooling mechanisms, dogs can overheat in weather that many people think is a gorgeous Arizona day. Dr. Rebecca Bukowy of MD Petcare has seen more cases of heat exhaustion during the

spring and fall months than in the summer. Even when it’s 70 degrees outside, the inside of a car can rise above 115 degrees in less than an hour. On a beautiful 80-degree day, your dog can start to suffer heat stroke in less than 30 minutes inside your car. Mitigate heat exhaustion risks by walking early in the morning or late at night, carrying plenty of water for your pet, never leaving your dog in the car, and looking for warning signs of heat exhaustion. If your pet is excessively panting, lethargic, or has bright red or blue gums, immediately stop outdoor activities and slowly cool your pet down to avoid heat stroke. You may need to also seek veterinary assistance, as heat stroke is an emergency situation. GOT THAT SPF? Thick coats of fur may overheat your dog, but short-coated dogs can suffer even bigger problems: skin cancer. Short or white coats, like on bully breeds, does not protect their skin from UV rays very well, which can cause different forms of skin cancer. Use a children’s or dog-friendly sunscreen, which is made for more sensitive skin, and avoid using an aerosolized sunscreen. Thick liquid sunscreens can be rubbed into their fur and onto their skin. A word of caution: make sure your dog doesn’t lick it off; it can make them sick. A quick rinse will wash off any excess at the end of your outdoor activities and keep them cool! WATER ACTIVITIES If you’re looking to have outdoor fun with your dog as temps rise, think about games with a kiddie pool. Found at most stores for less than $20, small pools can fit on apartment patios and provide endless fun for your pup on a hot day. Find some healthy snacks around the house, such as carrots or apple slices, and throw them into the pool. Hunting for snacks in the water and using their problem-solving skills will mentally stimulate your dog, which is as important as physical exercise. Throw their favorite toys into the

pool for a splashy game of fetch or wet their fur to cool them down. It may be the best $20 you spend all summer on your dog. ESCAPE THE HEAT, BUT NOT THE TICKS As more people and their four-legged family members escape up north for cooler temperatures, they may not realize they are exposing their dogs to hungry, disease-carrying ticks. The majority of dog owners in the valley do not use flea and tick treatment on their pets, but a simple monthly treatment can save them what could be thousands of dollars in medical bills. Tick fever, tick paralysis and blood borne diseases carried by ticks can infect your dog during one of your weekend outings in the woods. Some of these diseases are fatal but can be easily avoided with a pill or cream every month. Even outside of the summer months, owners should continue the treatments. One of the worst cases of tick borne illnesses at MD PetCare was a dog who lived in the Valley and never went farther than his backyard.

IF IT’S TOO HOT FOR YOUR HAND… Even if the temperature feels nice enough for a walk, asphalt can retain a lot of heat after sunset. Use the back of your hand to feel the ground. If you can’t leave the back of your hand on the ground for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s feet. If the air temperature is in the 70’s and 80’s, asphalt in the sun can be over 120 degrees, which can cause skin damage on the bottom of their paws. Booties are an option, but they do take extra training and should not be used as an answer to walking your dog when the outside temperature is too hot. With the above safety tips, you and your dog can survive the Arizona summer with ease! FIRST REFORMED

A pastor’s sanity loosens as he struggles with his beliefs in the aftermath of the suicide of someone who went to him for help. 2018 has been a great year for film so far. Ethan Hawke’s performance as Toller is arguably his best, often calm and subtle in scenes where he is having tough conversations and when he is on the verge of breaking down. The way director and writer Paul Schrader shot these scenes is incredible, whether he uses long takes, wide angles or the standard back and forth editing of a conversation, each time it always works to benefit the mood of the scene. This also leads to some incredible shots on their own. In addition, Schrader’s screenplay, while being about the guilt of not being able to help someone, also touches on how we treat our environment, how far we can go as activists, and the fear of a bleak future. It’s a very tough and somber film, but that’s what makes it great.

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE

A hired gun’s rescue of a senator’s daughter has repercussions for himself and his associates. Lynne Ramsay’s adaptation of Jonathan Ames novel of the same name is brutal and beautiful. The film flows like fever dream with every moment, whether calm or frightening, always having the uncomfortable switch dialed up to 10. Joaquin Phoenix’s role, the war vet Joe, is quiet but still menacing, never feeling overdramatic in his actions. Jonny Grennwood’s score is haunting, but weirdly soothing as well, with its placements throughout the film used as a look into the mind of Joe during specific scenes. The film’s short runtime of just 90 minutes never comes off as rushed and allows the story to take it’s time.

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?

A documentary that demystifies Fred Rogers and his career, including the creation of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. 20 • May 2018 • DEER VALLEY TIMES

What’s great about Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is that it shows many of Fred Rogers’ faults. He was unsure of how to approach some subjects, he had his doubts about himself, and was even not as accepting of a cast member’s sexuality at first. But he always drove to improve himself and to make everyone feel welcome. This is confirmed by the BTS footage on the set of Neighborhood, the b-roll footage of him with children, and even just him living his life. Each of the interviewees had something to bring to the film and revealed a new thing I had never known about Fred. But one of the best parts is how they handle the rumors about Mr. Rogers, and it’s both funny and heartwarming, much like most of this film.

BLINDSPOTTING

Two friends in Oakland have their relationship tested during the last few days of probation for one of them. Throughout Blindspotting, especially in its third act, there’s a ticking time bomb feeling, that any one mistake could completely destroy everything that Colin (Daveed Diggs) has been working for. His chemistry with Miles (Rafael Casal) is believable enough. In each scene that involves just the two of them hanging out, working or fighting, you understand both of their feelings. The politics of the film are also handled very well, as the title itself is about how one sees another individual on the surface, and we see how this affects several characters in the film. It’s a film that demands you pay attention, and you do. And like all good films, it leaves you thinking after the credits roll.
