CENSUS DAY IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!
CENSUS DAY—APRIL 1, 2020—IS QUICKLY APPROACHING! This month, lookout for information coming to your mailboxes about the 2020 Census. Your participation is critical! Counting everyone in your household in the 2020 Census is your opportunity to help your community receive funding for public programs and services.
Every decade since 1790, the United States has counted its population. The U.S. Census Bureau uses that data to allocate $675 billion in federal funds to support programs in education, healthcare, transportation, parks and recreation services, and other important local resources.
In Arizona, census data helps with the distribution of federal funding across 55 programs, including the National Lunch Program, federal student loan programs, and many other programs that enhance quality of life. For each person counted, the state receives $2,959 in federal funding totaling more than $20 billion per year, which goes toward vital services including schools, emergency services, and hospitals. There will be three secure and confidential ways to respond to the census. Each household will receive a code in the mail in March, directing the head of the household to complete the questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail. Each method takes under 10 minutes to complete and is completely safe and secure. The Census questionnaire asks you to share demographic information, but your answers are strictly kept private and anonymous, even to other government agencies. Title 13 of the U.S. Code prohibits the Census Bureau from releasing any identifiable information about you or anyone else in your household. This law extends to protect your information from being shared with any person, organization, court, business or government agency, including law enforcement.
Anyone employed by the Census Bureau is sworn under oath to protect any identifiable information. Violating this law is a federal crime which could result in a $250,000 fine and/or upto five years in jail. These strict penalties are put in place to ensure that census data is only used to generate the statistics that guide the distribution of federal funding and allocation of congressional representation. Phoenix has made it a priority to educate the public about the census and ensure a complete count. I serve on Phoenix’s 2020 Census Ad Hoc Committee, which helps lead Census-related efforts.

GOVERNOR DOUG DUCEY INCLUDES $2 MILLION IN HIS EXECUTIVE BUDGET FOR ARIZONA COMMISSION ON THE ARTS ARIZONA GOVERNOR DOUG DUCEY HAS INCLUDED A $2 MILLION GENERAL FUND ALLOCATION IN HIS $12.3 BILLION EXECUTIVE BUDGET FOR THE ARIZONA COMMISSION ON THE ARTS TO PROVIDE GRANTS AND OTHER SUPPORT TO NONPROFITS ARTS AND CULTURE ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS ARIZONA. “We believe that state funding in support of Arizona’s amazing arts sector is critical as the Legislature and governor being their annual budget negotiations,” said Arizona Citizens for the Arts Executive Director Joseph Benesh. “We applaud Governor Ducey for including
arts funding in his budget and encourage arts and culture advocates throughout Arizona to express their appreciation through social media.”
The allocation is level with 2019 funding “and helps ensure that arts and culture programs continue expanding community and economic contributions in cities and towns of every size,” Benesh said. Through the grant process, the Arizona Commission on the Arts requires grantees to prove fiscal responsibility and measurable impact which ensures quality, credibility and a “very high return on the investment that also enables the Arizona Commission on the Arts to better propel its vision to provide the

benefits of the arts to every Arizona citizen,” Benesh said. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) reported that Arizona’s arts and culture industries contribute $9 billion to the state’s economy, employing 90,000 Arizonans. At the same time,

BLM APPROVES PHOENIX-AREA RECREATIONAL SHOOTING SPORTS PROJECT THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT’S (BLM) PHOENIX DISTRICT HAS PUBLISHED A FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT (EA) AND DECISION RECORD APPROVING THE RECREATIONAL SHOOTING SPORTS PROJECT, CLEARING THE WAY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF FIVE RECREATIONAL SHOOTING SITES TO BE BUILT ON PUBLIC LANDS NEAR THE PHOENIX METRO AREA. The sites will provide active management, enhanced access and increased safety for shooting sports enthusiasts and other public land users near one of the most populated metro areas in the nation. The project is consistent with Secretary’s Order 3356, and the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act.
“Under the BLM’s multiple-use mission, we work to strike a balance in land use and resource management,” said BLM Deputy Director for Policy and Programs William Perry Pendley. “Phoenix is one of the most populated and fastest growing metro areas in the nation. This growth has spurred increased demand for recreation access on adjacent public lands. We listened to feedback from Valley residents and the shooting sports community while developing this project, which provides active management options to enhance recreation access and safety for all public land users.” “Recreational shooting is one of the most popular and rapidly growing pastimes in America, and sales of firearms and ammunition generated more than $650 million in the past fiscal year alone to support habitat acquisition, development, and operation of wildlife management and public recreation areas in all 50 states,” said Casey Hammond, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management. “We’re proud to provide innovative new ways for all Americans to safely enjoy recreational shooting on public lands.” A 2018 report from the National Shooting Sports Foundation found a 28 percent increase in target shooting participation since 2001 and an 80 percent increase among women and girls. More people participate in target shooting than play tennis, soccer or baseball, according to the report.
Based on environmental analysis and public input received through the planning process, the BLM determined there would be no significant impacts with the construction, maintenance and operation of the five sites. These sites-- Baldy Mountain, Church Camp Road, and Saddleback Mountain sites in North Phoenix; Narramore Road site in West Phoenix; and Box Canyon site near Maricopa--were selected because they are located in easily accessible areas and have minimal conflicts with other recreation activities and land uses, or natural and cultural resources. Construction of the first site, Baldy Mountain, is anticipated to begin this spring. The BLM will complete plans addressing operations, safety, environmental stewardship and monitoring at the sites prior to construction. Several documents associated with this project, including maps of the five shooting sports sites, are available online at the BLM’s ePlanning website at https://go.usa.gov/xmfVv. During the planning process, the BLM held a 15-day public comment period and received 23 comments to consider. A summary of those comments is also available at the ePlanning website. This project will not change existing dispersed recreational shooting access, with approximately 97 percent of BLM-managed public lands in Arizona remaining open to shooting sports. This effort will also not affect licensed hunting on public lands.
MARICOPA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVE 229 VOTING LOCATIONS TO REDUCE WAIT TIMES AND IMPROVE THE VOTER EXPERIENCE, THE MARICOPA COUNTY ELECTIONS DEPARTMENT IS MORE THAN TRIPLING THE NUMBER OF VOTING LOCATIONS FOR THE MARCH 17, 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE ELECTION. On Election Day, voters will have 229 voting locations, including 40 locations that will serve as vote anywhere locations. The Elections Department reviewed historic turnout models, mapped voting patterns and worked with community partners to increase polling locations from 60 in 2016 to 229 this election. In addition to increased polling locations, under the new joint management structure with the Board of Supervisor and Recorder Adrian Fontes, the Elections Department has purchased new tabulation equipment, nearly 8 • March 2020 • DEER VALLEY TIMES
doubled the amount of full-time staff and invested in the voter education campaign BeBallotReady.vote. The Presidential Preference Election is the voter’s chance to select their party’s nominee for President of the United States. Unlike Arizona’s traditional primaries, the Presidential Preference Election is not an open primary. Only the Democratic Party has chosen to participate in the election on March 17, 2020. Only Democrats who registered by February 18, 2020 are eligible to vote in this election. The Republican and Libertarian parties opted out of this election. ADOR: TAXPAYERS, BE ON LOOK OUT FOR IDENTITY THIEVES DURING TAX SEASON THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE (ADOR) TREATS DETECTING AND STOPPING FRAUD WITH PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE AND REMINDS TAXPAYERS THAT TAX FILING SEASON IS A TIME TO BE AWARE OF IDENTITY THIEVES LOOKING FOR WAYS TO COMMIT TAX FRAUD. The department points to phishing schemes, card-skimming devices, unsecure Wi-Fi networks, data breaches, computer viruses, unsafe smartphone apps, and hacking email accounts as ways identities are stolen. TIPS TO HELP PREVENT BEING THE VICTIM OF IDENTITY THEFT: • Do not carry identification with your Social Security Number (SSN) on it. • If someone wants your SSN, always ask why because it is not always required. • Keep personal and confidential information in a secure place. Take extra precautions when discarding personal or confidential infor • mation. • Protect personal computers, smartphones, and other devices by using anti-virus software. • Use strong passwords and never share your passwords.
• Never give personal information through unencrypted email, social media, or text messaging. One scam that targets companies and continues to be reported is the W-2 scam, which is when a phishing email is sent to someone in a company’s human resources or payroll office that appears to be from an executive of that business and asks for payroll information containing confidential information, be emailed immediately. The Arizona Department of Revenue advises staff to never respond to the email, and instead, connect with the person whose name is on the email by phone or in person to confirm its authenticity. ADOR recommends companies establish specific internal policies to address these requests and take steps to protect employee information. U.S. government ban on R-22 Freon took effect on January 1, 2020. This ban is part of a gradual phase-out initiated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to rid the United States of all ozone-depleting substances.
Whether you will need to eventually buy a new unit, retrofit your old unit or replace some component parts to comply with the EPA ban largely depends on a few things. MONICA ROBLES ART: CREATING ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES By Molly Cerreta Smith
L
ocal woodworking artist Monica Robles was quite literally born into her love of this creative craft. Growing up in Somerton, Arizona, Robles remembers her father building additions to their house and working on cars.
“
Robles evolved from creating mixed media artwork to custom furniture making about five years ago and with no formal training. She took on a few commissions making benches and small tables. “From there it was no turning back! I got so excited to learn how to make bigger pieces,” she says. Robles also did an internship in North Carolina with a friend who is a highend modern furniture maker. “The process of making furniture from start to finish was quite an eye opener and learning joinery and other skills that I brought back home to my own furniture making.”
I love to create furniture that is nothing you would find at a typical furniture store.
“My dad was an amazing man, a true craftsman,” she says, “My parents built the house I grew up in…without any experience, my mom learned how to put up drywall and framing. I feel like this is why I love making things with my hands and the feeling of creating makes me happy.”
After attending UofA, where she graduated with a BA in graphic design, Robles moved to Phoenix. In September of 2011, she collaboratively launched The Lab on Roosevelt Row, which became an explosion of creative energy in downtown Phoenix. “This was the stepping stone that brought me closer and was how I became more involved with the Phoenix art community,” she says. “I’ve been lucky to surround myself with a close group of creative women who have pushed me to be where I am today. Phoenix has a lot of amazing people and artists. It’s wonderful how the community works together.” deervalleytimes.com

Robles takes inspiration from old houses, often “treasure hunts” for wood in old barns in North Carolina. Her work has recently gotten noticed by West Elm, which is now carrying her pet beds. “They contacted me and wanted to include me as a #westelmlocal,” she says. “This is my first time having my furniture pieces in a retail store, so it is super exciting. Currently, I have two small pet beds available for purchase or people can contact me to design a custom pet bed to complement their home or office.”

There have been times where I step back and feel it’s not the right one. So, I start all over again and sometimes it’s something completely different than what I intended it to be at the beginning. My favorite part of it is once I find the design that I believe the client will love, I step back and admire the beautiful pattern. I love to create furniture that is nothing you would find at a typical furniture store. FOR BUYERS Supply continues to drop as the market heats up with the seasonal rush of Buyers. Typically, we would see supply rising at this time of year as January is a strong month for new listings to hit the market. However, this year new listings year-to-date are down 17% from last year and January 2020 had the lowest number of new listings recorded going all the way back to 2001. Combine this with a 21% increase in sales volume and the fourth highest January recorded for MLS sales, and it’s no surprise that supply is plummeting. While supply is down in all price points, it’s felt the most between $200K- $250K. Supply in this price range is nearly 60% lower than this time last year and a quarter of sales in the last three months have recorded over asking price. Seller-paid closing cost concessions are also down. Nearly 22% of all sales in the first quarter to date have included some form of seller-paid or assisted closing costs - that’s the lowest percentage recorded in nearly five years. FOR SELLERS The luxury market continues to go gangbusters in 2020. Sales over $1

WELCOMES TWO NEW SCHOOLS FOR 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR

ith the current growth and development happening in the North Phoenix and Deer Valley area, the Deer Valley Unified School District is following suit — and adding two new schools to the District. Beginning with the 20202021 school year, residents in the neighborhood can looking forward to additional school choices. THE TRADITIONAL ACADEMY AT BELLAIR
PRINCIPAL VIVIAN HUNT This fall, the district welcomes The Traditional Academy at Bellair with Principal Vivian Hunt at its helm. Currently the Principal of Arrowhead Elementary, Hunt is thrilled to
By Molly Cerreta Smith be heading up what she is calling her ‘dream school.’ Hunt, whose 41 years in education (which she says she has loved every minute of) includes teaching for 27 years before moving into the administration side 15 years ago. She is currently in her eighth year as principal of Arrowhead Elementary and is looking forward to a new year and a new school with The Traditional Academy at Bellair – and I believe her. In speaking with her about The Traditional Academy at Bellair, her energy and excitement were extremely evident. Her philosophy behind education is that every student deserves to thrive – regardless of the “type of school.” She encourages parents not to ask which types of school (public, private, charter, etc.) they should send their child to, but rather which type of school can serve their student’s individual needs in the best possible way. When it comes to The Traditional Academy at Bellair, Hunt calls the school “an environment that allows students to focus, and at a rate that aligns with their ability.” An accelerated traditional school that offers education a grade level above in reading, writing and math, Hunt admits that the school’s back to basics philosophy is centered around hard work and high standards. “We believe in the fundamental academic values that are designed around a focused environment where kids

can focus as well as core values of patriotism, citizenship, leadership, and responsibility.” As for that last part, Hunt notes that as an open enrollment school, the kids that are there want to be there, and as such, they will have the accountability to rise to the school’s standards and expectations… as will the parents. “A certain level of parent participation will be required, and we also require commitment from the staff that goes beyond the school day,” says Hunt adding, “We are all working to make this the greatest school ever. Everyone who will be here will be here by choice and that is very exciting.”
The current Bellair Elementary School is being repurposed and receiving modernization to become The Traditional Academy this fall. Hunt says it will receive fresh paint, new carpeting and cabinets in the classrooms and the front of the building will be redone with pillars, so it looks like a traditional school when it’s ready to welcome students in the fall. ELEMENTARY #31
Another element of participation, parents and students input on curriculum as well as school mascot, colors and uniform were all being considered and voted upon at time of press. Hunt’s goal in opening this “dream school” is that students will feel free to be themselves in a safe and nurturing environment. She hopes to offer the best of what public and charter schools can provide. Services will include gifted, developmental preschool, free kindergarten, before and after school programming, staffing for special education and technology including an 86-inch interactive screen that serves as a huge iPad.

Currently the Principal at DVUSD’s Canyon Springs STEM Academy, Tricia Graham will serve as principal for the new elementary school. Of her new appointment, Graham said, “I am honored to be the very first principal at DVUSD Elementary #31. I am also excited to hire amazing staff who will nurture, cultivate, and shape our school community into a family where students, parents, and staff alike love to teach, learn, and work in partnership towards an extraordinary education for our students.” Elementary #31 is set to feature a Spanish Immersion curriculum for students beginning in Kindergarten and 1st grade of the 2020-2021 school year. The mission of the district’s Spanish Immersion Program is to create a world class, fully articulated Spanish language curriculum from Kindergarten to the University level that will serve to enhance the future success of students in a global and technologically advanced society. Technology will also be an important element to enhancing students’ curriculum; Elementary #31 will be a 1:1 device campus for all of its students. Kindergarten students will have access to iPads while students in 1st through 7th grade will use Chromebooks. And much like The Traditional Academy, and all DVUSD schools, Elementary #31 will have a developmental preschool as well as
gifted services offered at every grade level, beginning in Kindergarten with a Gifted Cluster model, which will then flow through all grade levels and into middle school where it will either continue as a cluster model or become Advanced Courses for 7th and 8th grades. The school will have a full-time gifted specialist on-hand to provide additional gifted services, which will be determined based on student numbers at each grade level as well as student and teacher needs each year. On February 12 – 19, future students, parents, and staff voted on the following finalists to determine a name, colors, and mascot for the school. FIND THE RIGHT MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AND LESSONS FOR YOUR CHILD It’s important to find a music program and musical instrument that suits your child’s age and interests. Most public schools have music programs that begin teaching instruments around the fourth and fifth grade, but you can begin private lessons as young as five or six years old. Work with your kid to see what they are interested in before you get started with the time and expense of formal lessons. Here are a few important factors to keep in mind: • Age, Size, and Physical Limitations: Consider the age, size, and physical limitations of your child when you choose an instrument. • Noise Level: Think about how your neighbors and family will feel about a drum set, guitar, or loud instrument, and whether you can reduce noise and set practice times to keep the peace. • Space: Make sure you have room in your home for a piano, harp, or drum set, if that is the direction you want to go – otherwise, think about smaller, more portable instruments.

The museum also provides visitors a hands-on experience of playing different instruments, and offer many camps and educational programs for kids and adults alike. Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Solid Rock is a non-profit organization started by local celebrity Alice Cooper. Their mission is to make a difference in the lives of teens by providing music, arts, and vocational programs in the field of entertainment. They challenge teens to discover their passion through music, dance, video and sound production, selfexpression, and creativity. Sounds Academy Sounds Academy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach, mentor, and provide musical experiences and opportunities to underserved youth in the Phoenix area. This organization provides music education opportunities to a wide variety of children, while removing any barriers that children may have in receiving quality music education.

F
inding a bar and grill in the Valley of the Sun is not a difficult task. Finding one with great food, excellent prices and a pretty cool history is quite another thing. Those things combined are what makes “The Other Q Bar” located at 20818 North 19th Avenue in Phoenix such a hidden gem.
Owned and operated by Chuck Rohlfing and his eldest daughter, Julie, The Other Q Bar and Grill is a reference to the Original Q Bar, which was opened in the summer of 1986 by Chuck and his wife Lynne. The couple were fresh off their move from Alaska, where Lynne pursued a career in education while Chuck opened two cocktail lounges and two liquor stores. After a brief vacation to Phoenix in 1975, the Rohlfing’s returned to Alaska, sold their business, packed up their family and moved to the Valley.
Upon opening in 1986, with just $500 in borrowed cash and armed with 50 pounds of fresh red snapper on ice, The Q Bar’s humble beginnings grew to include the “The Other Q Bar” in the mid 90s — but they continue to source only the freshest seafood that is flown in weekly. The Other Q Bar is unique in that in addition to lunch and dinner, it serves breakfast to early risers on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. With choices like the Green Chile Plate, The Magnum breakfast burrito, the Honey Ham and Swiss Breakfast Panini and more, guests can wash down a morning meal with an eye-opener such as a Bloody Mary, Mimosa or a Screwdriver.

THE OLD W E S T HIGHWAY I
f you’re heading east towards New Mexico and want to venture off the beaten path and avoid the extreme traffic on I-10, consider taking a trip down the Old West Highway. This historic route between Apache Junction, AZ, and Lordsburg, NM, runs through the Superstition Wilderness on US Highway 60, over the Salt River Canyon between Superior and MiamiGlobe, and through the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. It continues east through tiny Arizona towns like Bylas and Safford, moving east on Highway 70 to the tiny town of Duncan, ending in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The road winds through mountains, farmland, and history on a mostly twolane road through the eastern part of the state. Here are a few of the places on the Old West Highway that we recommend visiting near the Phoenix area. APACHE TRAIL One of the most spectacular, and heart-pounding, side trips you can take from the Old West Highway is the Apache Trail. Arizona State Route 88 is a mostly unpaved, steep and winding road connecting Apache Junction to Roosevelt Lake in the Tonto National Forest. The Apache Trail, named after the Apache Indians who once used this as a regular trade route, passes through

desert, mountains, lakes, and forests in the Superstition Wilderness, on the way to places like Lost Dutchman State Park, Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, the Roosevelt Dam and the Tonto National Monument. Use caution because the Apache Trail winds steeply through 40 miles of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes, and the narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flats all the way to Roosevelt Dam. Be prepared for steep cliff drops and few safety barriers. The trail is not for the faint of heart, nor is it recommended for large RVs or trailers, but the scenery along this road is breathtaking. LOST DUTCHMAN STATE PARK Lost Dutchman State Park is located at the base of the Superstition Mountains, about 40 miles east of Phoenix. The park is named after a legendary lost gold mine in the Superstition Mountain Wilderness, and is known for breathtaking scenery, trails, and wildlife. It’s also famous for having a fantastic wildflower bloom in the spring and one of the most challenging hikes in the Superstition Mountains, the renown Siphon Draw Trail that takes hikers to the top of the rock wall surface of the Flatiron.

TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT Nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain to see ancient cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved, but fairly steep path up the mountain. Check in at the Visitor Center and be sure to begin your hike before 4:00 p.m. to make sure you make it back down the trail before dark. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a three to four-hour guided tour, so plan ahead to book your tour in advance. SUPERIOR Superior had its origins as a mining town, drawing prospectors and mining companies to the area. Fortunately, one of those settlers was Colonel Boyce Thompson, who founded one of our favorite places to visit in the area, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Established in the 1920s, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. The Arboretum is on
Highway 60, just outside of Superior, and a beautiful spot for a day trip or a place to stop when you travel down the Old West Highway on the way to Globe. GLOBE Globe is a great town to visit to get a taste of the historic Old West Highway and Arizona’s Territorial history. Whether you want to visit ancient Indian ruins, see the historic downtown, shop for antiques, or enjoy the works of local artists, Globe has a little bit of everything. Our favorite stop in Globe is the ruins of Besh-BaGowah, a 200-room prehistoric Salado masonry pueblo overlooking Pinal Creek. The site is located in a small city park and includes a museum and gift shop with excavated items like prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts. As Arizonans, we live in a state that is full of natural wonders and beautiful scenery all year round. Many of these fantastic places are in or near the Phoenix area, so take time to visit different parts of the Sonoran Desert near you and enjoy the Arizona wilderness up close. GIVING HOPE: CHILDREN’S CANCER NETWORK

T
he Children’s Cancer Network (CCN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing assistance to Arizona families battling childhood cancer. The organization was established in 2004, but the impetus for its foundation began in 1993, when Steve and Patti Luttrell’s then five-year-old son Jeff was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The family was devastated and shocked. Jeff received treatment — including multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and finally a bone marrow transplant in order to treat the initial cancer and its four subsequent relapses. However, after nine years of being cancer free, Jeff was diagnosed with a secondary cancer, squamous cell cancer of the tongue. So, at the age of 21, Jeff had numerous additional surgeries and two types of radiation to rid his body again of cancer. Four years later, at the age of 25, this cancer re-occurred. Today, Jeff is doing well and has graduated with a graphic design degree. However, his experience led the Luttrells to want to help other families through this time. According to the Network, the emotions and experiences throughout cancer treatment and after may be complex and life changing. Often these emotions are difficult to comprehend for those who have not been there. Many families dealing with childhood cancer are faced with a new uncertainty regarding their futures. There likely are questions and needs that never would have been contemplated prior to their child’s diagnosis. Children’s Cancer Network has

been formed to focus on the needs of families and their children with cancer. The Luttells’ daughter Jenny was instrumental in the creation of the fashion show that features children dealing with cancer as well as their siblings. It was designed to be a fun and empowering event that helped to raise money to contribute to the emergency fund for families undergoing bone marrow transplant. In addition to the Fashion show, The Children’s Cancer Network has an auction and luncheon which donates raised funds to the Pediatric Bone Marrow Emergency Funds at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and University Medical Center. The Network also hosts a variety of events and experiences for children/teens battling childhood cancer, along with their families at no cost. One of their most exciting upcoming fundraising events is their Run to Fight Children’s Cancer 5k/10k, which will be held April 5. Register online for the event at RunToFightCancer.com. Run to Fight Children’s Cancer is the largest race in Arizona dedicated solely to pediatric cancer. Now in its tenth year, the race unites the community in building awareness of childhood cancer and raising much-needed funds for research, treatments, patient education and a host of support services for families battling the disease.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
Mike and Marcus have to deal with the fallout of an enemy that Mike put away long ago. Bad Boys for Life proves that long-dormant franchises have no excuses in not only producing something new that is great, but also taking it to the next level. It’s got the fun, over-the-top action you know and love while bringing a more neon and Asian cinema inspired style to it. Surprisingly, it also tells a more mature and caring story about family (and not in an ironic way like the Fast and Furious movies). It’s refreshing to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence truly give their all here, while also bringing us new and well-developed characters. It may not be the gleeful anarchy of Michael Bay’s previous films, but I am thankful that it exists.
BIRDS OF PREY
Harley Quinn teams up with a group of antiheroes to fight a crime lord in Gotham City. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey is another great piece in DC’s current series of directordriven films. The sun-soaked, dirty Gotham shown here is a nice departure from the dark and dank city we typically see. This film offered an amusing tone and story with a surprising pull at the heartstrings. We have an absolutely fantastic cast here, where Margot Robbie continues to showcase that she was the perfect choice for Quinn. The newly introduced characters were also all expertly cast and showcase distinct personalities that add to the group dynamic. I especially love Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as a pretentious but still scary art-loving villain rounds out the troop perfectly.
THE GENTLEMEN
An Oklahoma-born businessman must fight against gangsters for control of his weed empire. When the film has Colin Farrell and a breakdancing gang on screen, it’s the rare moment that The Gentlemen gains some real audience enthusiasm. Beyond that, Guy Ritchie’s “back to form” film feels less like a homecoming and more like a depressing high school reunion. You’ve seen these characters, set ups and jokes a million times before. Ritchie doesn’t seem to do anything new with the formula. The usage of technology comes up multiple times in the film, but it doesn’t add any value or play a role in our characters’ arcs. The actors do fine with what they’re given, but again, beyond Farrell, they do nothing to elevate the material. Unfortunately, it does the worst thing a movie can do...be boring.
THE RHYTHM SECTION
A woman goes on a mission to find those responsible for the death of her family. Reed Morano has proven to be a major addition to action directors, as Rhythm Section gives her the shot to pull off some good set pieces. In particular, her car chase scene is a lovely balance between raw and exciting. The problems that I see with this flick are the messy and morally confused screenplay, wonky editing and a miscast Blake Lively. Dark storytelling can be great, but there needs to be energy behind it. Showing misery for an hour and 40 minutes doesn’t just make something dark and edgy, it makes it depressing.
