HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATES TIME TO FEED THE HUNGRY

ourgade Catholic High School is on a mission to help those less fortunate, all school year long. With the start of the New Year, Bourgade Catholic remained dedicated to a new philanthropic goal: to feed the hungry. In honor of the Junior’s Day of Prayer and Service, on January 19, students from the high school spent the day at Feed My Starving Children.
Bourgade Catholic is no stranger to Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit in Mesa, Arizona. Since August, the school’s faculty, senior class, National Honor Society and drama club have hand-packed meals specifically formulated for malnourished children in more than 70 countries at the non-profit
agency. The softball team and drama club are also among the school groups to feed the hungry, delivering sandwiches, donuts, and water for homeless to eat.

“I knew that what I was doing compared to the extremely hard work of the employees at Feed My Starving Children, was just a small piece of the puzzle, but the way everyone worked so well together, I just felt such a sense of community and purpose”, explains faculty member JinHee Huff. “I’m looking forward to going back; I have already scheduled a session to take the Drama Club to participate in this awesome experience.”

LEARNING LEADERSHIP THROUGH ACTION ANNIE, A SOPHOMORE AT DEER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL, IS PASSIONATE ABOUT NEARLY EVERYTHING. A performer, she loves theater and dance. Recently, she exhibited her love for the arts and her community by organizing a charity art show to support the Deer Valley Dance Department and the Arizona Artist’s Guild Scholarship Fund.
Her idea for an art show occurred to her while attending a youth conference. In a mere five months, this dynamic 16-year-old pulled together a charity event with donated art, live music and even a raffle. She received help from friends, family, her school, local businesses and her Girl Scout Troop 1219. The event raised $700 which she donated
equally to the Deer Valley Dance Department and the Arizona Artists’ Guild Scholarship Fund.
Annie says that this experience helped her grow as a person. Learning to overcome setbacks with understanding and compassion, she feels this project has made her a better leader. Foremost, she became adept at prioritizing her life, juggling school with multiple extracurricular activities. Thoughtful and gracious, Annie acknowledges blessings can show up in the most unlikely places—like her math teacher who unexpectedly ended up being a major source of support for Annie and for her event. Annie’s passion reaches far beyond the arts however. At school, she is the Bible Study President, Social Progression Vice-President and CoFounder, Superintendent Student Representative, The President’s
Volunteer Service Award recipient, and a member of the physics club -- while taking all honor classes and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Her jaw-dropping list of activities and interests include ballet, track and field, marine biology and public relations. She is quick to admit that she appreciates what she learns even when trying something she is not particularly good at doing. For example, Annie will tell you she is no Olympic athlete but track taught her a lot about leadership. She credits her coach who taught her that there are “no part-time champions” and urged her to give her all in every aspect of her life. Annie is a full-time champion. Connection, mastery and selfcreation all drivers of leadership, are apparent in Annie’s life. She clearly has the Girl Scout DNA as a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker and leader.

NEW VARSITY FOOTBALL HEAD COACH I AM VERY HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT BOURGADE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL HAS SELECTED MR. MARCEL LOPEZ TO BE THE HEAD COACH FOR THE 2017-18 BCHS VARSITY FOOTBALL PROGRAM. Mr. Lopez brings 10 years of experience as a Head Varsity Football Coach at a college prep charter school. While there he inaugurated and built a varsity football program and led his team to five State Championship appearances. He was also named Coach of the Year in 2007, 2009, and in 2013. When asked about motivating and inspiring student-athletes to be excellent in achievement, he wrote, “Motivation, simply defined, is the ability to initiate and persist at a task. Student athletes should be motivated by trying to become the best version of themselves and
exemplify this through their actions on (and off) the playing field. They have to understand that when they put on that jersey they represent so much more than themselves. They represent their school, their family, their community and their team. At Bourgade Catholic they are also called to represent their faith... not everyone has the ability to do what they are asked to do ...(our student athletes) are held to a higher standard because they have chosen to take on the challenge of competing at a high level while also meeting their academic requirements. Mediocrity is unacceptable when you have the ability to be great.” We agree with him - BCHS student athletes have the ability to be great!
Catholic School and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Arizona and is currently enrolled in an Education program through the University of Mary. NVCA SET TO OPEN IN AUGUST 2017 NORTH VALLEY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY ANNOUNCED PLANS FOR ITS ‘TOPPING OUT CEREMONY’ SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 23 AT 11:00 A.M. School leaders, Board of Trustee members, key donors, and construction personnel will meet on site February 23 to celebrate
this important milestone in the construction of NVCA’s new 72,000 square foot campus located at 33655 N. 27th Drive, Phoenix. The event is planned to commemorate the half way point in completion of the campus for opening fall 2017. The 21st Century designed campus,
moving from Anthem to Tramonto, will provide a Christ-centered liberal arts education for 600+ students, grades Pre-K through 12. With the addition of high school, the new school will offer an expanded curriculum in a blended, project based learning environment. Enabled with a strong technology platform, students will have increased flexibility in learning while benefiting from a full range of athletic programs, performing arts, and STEAM classes. IS YOUR CHILD AN EASY TARGET FOR SEX TRAFFICKERS? YOU SEE IT ON THE NEWS AND SOCIAL MEDIA—GIRLS AS YOUNG AS 12 YEARS OLD DISAPPEARING. These girls aren’t running away because of a fight with parents or siblings. These girls are being tricked or taken and forced into a world of sex trafficking. In some cases, girls are abducted off the street, but 71 percent of victims have previously met their abductor. Traffickers will recruit girls at school, malls and online. They look for easy targets: teens that feel isolated, appear vulnerable, or don’t have strong relationships with safe adults. Traffickers will often manufacture a friendship or relationship to build trust. That relationship can soon become the most important thing in their lives and eclipse family relationships and other commitments. At other times,
traffickers will promise a job making lots of money. How can parents combat the deception of sex traffickers? Here are three tips to keep your child safe. 1. Cultivate a strong relationship Teens who have a strong relationship with their parents may be less likely to be influenced by traffickers who are looking for girls who are alone or isolated. Parents who are involved in their teen’s life will deter traffickers who may move on to easier targets. 2. Why Rules? Teens rarely like rules, but they help keep them safe. Teens need to understand the reasons for rules and what can happen if they aren’t followed. These include: curfews, staying in groups, checking in, knowing friends, and where they plan to be. The more your teen understands the importance of rules
to keep them safe, the more likely the rules will be followed. 3. Talk about Sex Trafficking Talk about sex trafficking to your teen and show them stories of real people. Many teens are lured away from home with promises of modeling, becoming famous, love or making a lot of money. Traffickers start friendships online, in person or through friends and will often lie about their age. Most teens think sex trafficking only happens in faraway places or to other people. The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates that 100,000 children and young women ranging in age from ages 9 to 19 are trafficked in America each year— with the average age of 11 years old.

EASILY AVOID THESE FIVE WEB DESIGN MISTAKES By Ryan Englin, CEO of Inspire Business Concepts

reating a new website for your business can be a challenging process, whether you’ve done it before or this is your first time. Proper planning will give your business a competitive advantage on the web. The right plan will make sure you don’t make these mistakes. MISTAKE #1 – IGNORING MOBILE DEVICES Develop your website for mobile devices. With more than 75 percent of web searches coming from a mobile device, you no longer have a choice. Let your customers know you care, develop a mobile friendly website and say goodbye to the old “pinch & zoom.” After all, it’s an easy fix. Just tell your developer you want a mobile respon-
sive website. If you’re using WordPress, it’s even easier as almost all themes are built with mobile in mind. MISTAKE #2 – NOT THINKING LIKE YOUR CUSTOMER You need to think like you customer when creating your website. Avoid overly clever or jargony menu choices. Also, make sure your menu structure is clear and laid out logically. Have someone outside your business, test your new site before it launches. If your tester can’t find relevant information, you’ve missed the mark. MISTAKE #3 – FOCUSING ON LOOKS If you have a choice between a good looking website or one that brings in new customers, which one would you pick? Don’t ignore looks. It just shouldn’t be your primary focus. The primary goal of your website should be to help visitors decide whether they want to do business with you.
It’s easy to make your website “too pretty” when you add too many large photos, fancy graphics, or special effects to your site. The best websites keep the photos, graphics, and special effects to a minimum. And above all, avoid anything that is currently a fad. MISTAKE #4 – IGNORING WEBSITE SPEED Studies show you lose half your visitors if your website takes longer than three seconds to load. With so much going on, and so many other opportunities, the vast majority of visitors will go to your competition if your site takes too long to load. Make sure you test the load times of your new website and make sure your developer can get it below 3 seconds to load the entire page. There are a lot of free tools available to help with testing your site. Just Google “website speed test” and find your favorite.
MISTAKE #5 – FORGETTING ABOUT MARKETING Make no mistake about it; your website is a marketing asset. Your website should support your marketing and sales efforts. Do you have a newsletter? Make sure people can sign-up for it! Do you offer a free sample? Let your visitors know! No obligation quotes? Have them call you! Whatever you offer, make sure your website supports it. ave you ever wondered why Grandma always seemed so happy and content when she was sitting in her rocking chair crocheting or knitting? Or why ladies in old movies were always doing some hand work, especially when there was a tense scene? Maybe the old saying, “the devil makes work for idle hands” isn’t so far off the mark.
Recent research shows that crafting may destroy anxiety and depression, and it can help keep our moods elevated. Additionally, the act of creating also contributes to keeping our minds sharp into old age, offsetting the effects of aging, and the onset of dementia. The 2007 literature review, The Neurological Basis of Occupation, by S.A. Gutman, and V.P. Schindler, states the literature they reviewed, “showed that purposeful and meaningful activities could counter the effects of stress related diseases and reduce the risk of dementia.” They continued to state that further research is still needed. Without going into all the medical reasons,

such as which chemicals are released when the body is engaged in various types of activities, and what brain wave patterns are exhibited, we can easily see the benefits to crafting.

Have you ever stopped to watch the quilters group working at a local church? Do they look stressed out? People who have community tend to be less anxious and depressed. Maybe your community is your family. Teach your children creativity and the art of making things. Crafting is a skill that will serve them well for their entire lifetime.
YOU EXPERIENCE A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT Learning how to make something for yourself is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. Feelings of accomplishment boost confidence and self-esteem, two important factors in warding off depression. You can further enhance this beautiful feeling by teaching others what you have learned. Teaching helps you continue to grow in confidence of
your newfound abilities.
You learn something new. When you learn something new, there is a physical effect on your brain. New synapses form between the neurons as new learning takes place. Learning keeps your mind flexible and is a factor in warding off dementia as we age. It was once believed that we are no longer capable of learning new things that affect our brain health as we age. rimavera Online High School’s summer school program has grown tremendously over the past couple years to be the largest program in Arizona, with thousands of students enrolling every summer. Our summer school program grows in popularity because it is tuition free and online, but another large factor is the personalization for each student’s needs.
STUDENT SCENARIO 1: YOU DIDN’T DO SO HOT IN A CLASS If you didn’t do “so hot” in that math class, Primavera is a great place to make up credits. Because our 100 percent online summer school courses last four weeks, you can get caught up quickly on up to two courses over the summer. Plus, you’ll have teachers and counselors supporting you every step of the way. STUDENT SCENARIO 2: THERE’S NOT ENOUGH ROOM IN YOUR SCHEDULE FOR ALL THE ELECTIVES YOU LOVE High school is a great time to discover your talents and try out something new, but that can get tricky when there’s only room for an elective or two each semester. That’s where you can utilize summer school; knock out a class over the summer so you can have room for more electives during the school year. STUDENT SCENARIO 3: YOU’RE DONE WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL LIFE, AND READY TO GRADUATE If you can’t wait to finish high school, it is possible to graduate early. Taking summer school courses with Primavera is a great way to get ahead quickly on credits. Students can take two courses over the summer, and are welcome to
enroll concurrently with Primavera throughout the school year as well, in order to graduate up to a year early.
PARENT SCENARIO 1: YOUR CHILD NEEDS SUMMER SCHOOL, BUT YOU AREN’T ABLE TO PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION Figuring out rides for summer school can get complicated, especially since traditional summer school is half a day. Because it is 100 percent online, Primavera does not require transportation, which makes helping your child get back on track much more doable. PARENT SCENARIO 2: YOUR CHILD NEEDS MORE SUPPORT IN TRICKY SUBJECTS If your child failed a course, Primavera might be a better option for them because of its supportive environment. Teachers remain in contact with students through emails, phone calls, instant messaging and personal online tutoring sessions. Summer school is very fast-paced, and taking it with Primavera will allow for more personalized attention to help your child succeed. PARENT SCENARIO 3: YOU DON’T WANT YOUR CHILD’S BRAIN TO TURN TO MUSH OVER THE SUMMER If you’re worried about your child being home all day with nothing to do, Primavera has a number of electives courses available.
