FEATURED CHARITY OF THE MONTH:
M
SHOEBOX MINISTRY
ost of us take soap and shampoo for granted. Our hands are clean, teeth brushed, and our faces washed. Sadly, for far too many of our neighbors, this is not the case.
Since 1988, those at Shoebox Ministry have made it their sole mission to provide hygiene items to neighbors in need through their network of over 30 nonprofit agencies, all of whom are local to the Greater Phoenix area. These agencies distribute their hygiene kits to their clients who are adults and children experiencing homelessness, domestic violence survivors, people in recovery, and others who need, but cannot afford, hygiene items. For many adults, having the opportunity to maintain their personal hygiene means that a homeless individual may have a chance at being offered employment, setting them on a path to become independent and productive members of society once again. For kids, school attendance, academic achievement, positive peer relationships, confidence, a sense of control, and health all increase with good hygiene.
Shoebox Ministry is grateful for the support of our community here in the Valley and would like to leave with four ways to get involved: • You’re invited to Fill the (Shoe)Box on April 3 for a hot breakfast, a little inspiration, and an opportunity to contribute to the good work they are doing now. Find more information, including sponsorship opportunities, at shoeboxministry.org/upcomingevents/breakfast. • Donate new and very gently used purses for their annual Mother’s Day event where they give away purses stocked with beauty products to moms experiencing homelessness and domestic violence survivors. • Have a drawer full of toiletries from traveling? They’d love to take them off your hands! Stop into their office, located at 13645 N. 32nd St in Phoenix, Monday-Friday between 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Lee Humes, founder of one of their nonprofit partners, Deep Within, and Shoebox hygiene kits recipient himself over 20 years ago, said “Shoebox Ministry and the personal hygiene items represented a new beginning in my life and my recovery, and gave me a fresh start with increased confidence to continue my life - and my journey.”
• As a nonprofit, they have access to discounted toiletry items and can purchase by the pallet, averaging 3x more hygiene items with every donated dollar. Bonus: your gift qualifies as an Arizona Charitable Tax Credit donation, meaning that up to $400 or $800 of it is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in state taxes. When you make a donation to Shoebox Ministries, it doesn’t cost you a dime. Questions? Visit shoeboxministry.org/tax-credit
While the government-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds provides money for food, it never allows for the purchase of basic hygiene items. Shoebox fills this gap in our community, helping to alleviate the burden of having to choose or go without.
We know that when everyone has access to the basics, they gain a positive outlook and are able to take the next big steps in their journey of becoming productive and accepted members of our community—and we’d love to have you become a part of ours! Join us at www. shoeboxministry.org

PHOENIX COMPLETES LED STREET LIGHT CONVERSION, ESTIMATING $3.5 MILLION IN ENERGY SAVINGS PER YEAR PHOENIX RESIDENTS ARE EXPERIENCING IMPROVED VISIBILITY ON CITY STREETS AFTER THE CONVERSION TO LED STREETLIGHTS. The city of Phoenix completed a citywide conversion of nearly 100,000 standard streetlights to energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) units. This conversion is one of the largest completed by any U.S. city.
“As the fifth largest city and fastest growing city in the nation, I want to make Phoenix a model of sustainability for communities across the country,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “These new LED streetlights not only bring us one step closer to that goal, they also provide tremendous annual cost-savings for residents.” The conversion was approved by Phoenix City Council after several years of testing and evaluation of various LED streetlights. Based upon community input and the evaluations, Phoenix adopted 2,700 kelvin as the standard kelvin level for Phoenix’s new LED streetlights, which is considered a warmer color temperature for LED lights. The new LED streetlights are anticipated to save the city approximately $3.5 million in annual energy costs. By switching to more energy efficient LED fixtures, the city reduced the amount of electricity needed to illuminate the streets by approximately 53 percent. This reduction prevents emissions of up to 18,000 metric tons of carbon
dioxide a year -- the equivalent of taking 3,800 cars off the road.
LED streetlights also have longer lifespans and produce better light quality than the previously used high pressure sodium streetlights. In addition to substantial energy savings, the LED fixtures will reduce maintenance expenses over their service life. Each of the nearly 100,000 new fixtures comes with a ten-year warranty. LED technology can also improve roadway visibility and safety due to the improved distribution of light compared to high pressure sodium streetlights. Improved visibility has been linked to a reduction in crime and increased pedestrian safety. The city encourages the public to report streetlight outages, repair requests and other concerns to phoenix.gov/atyourservice by clicking on the “Streetlight Repair Request” form or by calling the streetlight hotline at 602-495-5125. Learn more about the Street Transportation Department at phoenix.gov/streets and follow the department on Twitter @StreetsPHX.
CLOSURE OF TWO LOOP 101 RAMPS AT SEVENTH AVE. THROUGH MARCH SCHEDULED TO REOPEN IN MARCH AS PART OF FREEWAY WIDENING PROJECT TWO OF THE LOOP 101 (PIMA FREEWAY) RAMPS AT SEVENTH AVENUE IN PHOENIX ARE GOING TO BE CLOSED THROUGH MARCH TO ALLOW WORK TO ADVANCE ON THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S FREEWAY WIDENING PROJECT IN THE NORTH VALLEY. The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp and eastbound onramp at Seventh Avenue are scheduled to reopen in March. ADOT started the $185 million project to add lanes and make other improvements along 13 miles of Loop 101 between Interstate 17 and Pima Road. The entire project is scheduled for completion in early 2021. The westbound on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp at Seventh Street closed previously as part of the project. They also are scheduled to reopen in March. The ramp closures allow crews to widen bridges and reconstruct ramps between Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street to accommodate additional lanes.
Drivers on westbound Loop 101 can exit at Seventh Street and enter westbound Loop 101 at Seventh Avenue via the westbound frontage road (Beardsley Road), while eastbound Loop 101 drivers can exit at Seventh Avenue and enter at Seventh Street via the eastbound frontage road. MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE: • Adding one general purpose lane in each direction between I-17 and Pima • Adding an auxiliary lane in each direction between Seventh Street and Cave Creek Road • Constructing a new overpass structure at the future Miller Road alignment • Modifying freeway ramps and frontage road connections at 11 interchanges Additional components include construction of noise or retaining walls where warranted, improvements to drainage and new rubberized asphalt resurfacing and pavement markings.

This project is utilizing the design-build (D/B) method of delivery to help reduce the overall project timeline. This delivery method differs from the more traditional design-bid-build approach in which the project is completed in two phases (designed and then constructed). The D/B method involves pairing civil engineering firms with construction contractors to create “design builders” who work synergistically from begin-
ning to end. This creates more opportunities for innovation and can reduce costs. The D/B method of delivery is most advantageous when transportation improvements are needed immediately to reduce high traffic volume or chronic congestion. For more information on the D/B method, go to azdot.gov/ node/7485. To learn more about these improvements, please visit azdot.gov/Loop101Improvements. deervalleytimes.com

PUTTING AN END TO ROBOCALLS WITH THE TRACED ACT By Congressman David Schweikert
I AM EXCITED TO REPORT CONGRESS HAS FINALLY PASSED THE TELEPHONE ROBOCALL ABUSE CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT AND DETERRENCE (TRACED) ACT, LEGISLATION CREATING STRONGER AND MORE ROBUST POLICY TO COMBAT ILLEGAL ROBOCALLS. Now that this legislation has been signed into law, phone companies will be held responsible for verifying calls, and criminals working behind illicit robocalls will be held accountable. Robocalls have become an incessant problem faced by the people of Arizona. These calls are likely telecommunications providers or can entail fraudulent activity. Do not call lists are proving to be ineffective, and I have been working to advocate for increased transparency and higher penalties for unauthorized calls. After introduction, I knew I needed to co-sponsor the TRACED Act because it was strong, bipartisan legislation that would provide a solution from Arizonans. This legislation increases the authority of the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) to expand civil penalties of up to $10,000 dollars for telemarketers who violate legal call restrictions and accommodates the FCC by allowing more time to administer these laws. It also puts legal responsibility on telephone companies to verify incoming phone calls. I am proud of the work my colleagues and I were able to accomplish by working across party lines to pass thoughtful and effective legislation, and I am grateful to have been a part of this effort. To take greater preventive measures, I have included below links to resources for you to use to learn more about what Cox Communications in Arizona is doing and information from the National Do Not Call Registry about how you can stop receiving unwanted calls. If you are a Cox Communications customer, they are providing free access for you to a third-party app called NoMoRoBo. This app can be set up easily at cox.com/residential/support/setting-up-nomorobo. html To add your number to the do not call registry, visit the National Do Not Call Registry online at donotcall.gov.
For more information on how the do not call registry works, the steps to add your number to the list, and how to report a robocall, you can visit www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0108-national-donot-call-registry. Alternatively, you can call 1-888382-1222, but you must call from the telephone number you would like to add to the list.

FUNDPHX LETS YOU LEARN ABOUT THE DOLLARS AND SENSE IN PHOENIX’S BUDGET ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DIVING INTO THE DOLLARS AND SENSE BEHIND WHAT MAKES THE CITY OF PHOENIX RUN? Now you can learn more about all the programs and services the city provides, and what it costs to bring them to you every day.
That’s possible through a new tool, called FundPHX, that takes the city’s $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget and brings it directly to your device – computer, smart phone or tablet. All the city’s programs are there, with costs and descriptions, so you can learn about what it takes to provide everything
from youth recreation activities to reading programs and senior services in your neighborhood. The tool is loaded with General Fund budgets for departments or city functions. Each of those areas is also linked to the city’s Inventory of Programs, which provides more detail on a department- and program-specific level. With FundPHX you can provide comments directly on the budget, and let the city know what you think is important. You can add funding to programs you’d like to see grow, and reallocate funding from programs that you feel could be used elsewhere. Once you’ve made your choices, save your work, and share it with the city. An essential part of planning for the city of Phoenix is the development of its annual budget every year. The more than $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget includes everything from police and fire services, to parks, libraries, and senior services.

The city of Phoenix is known for one of the most transparent and participatory budgeting processes in the country. Over the years, staff has looked for ways to include more people in the budgeting process, especially those who are not able to attend the city’s budget hearings. This tool allows people to participate at their own pace, on their own schedule, in conjunction with the city’s traditional budget process. The FundPHX software lets you see for yourself what each service costs, and how much it would cost (or save) when you change service levels. With a budget that size, supporting the fifth largest city in the country and 1.7 million residents, it can be a challenge to understand everything that goes into the services you receive. To help residents better understand how our budget is created, the Budget & Research Department has added a new tool to gather feedback and help you see what makes Phoenix run. REGISTRATION, RE-ENROLLMENT OPEN
FOR 2020 ARIZONA GIVES DAY COMING OFF A RECORD-BREAKING OUTCOME IN 2019 WHEN ARIZONA GIVES DAY RAISED $3.6 MILLION FOR NONPROFITS ACROSS THE STATE, REGISTRATION AND RE-ENROLLMENT IS NOW OPEN FOR ARIZONA NONPROFITS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THE 2020, 24-HOUR ONLINE FUNDRAISING EVENT, SET FOR APRIL 7.
completed financials through Form 990 or the organization’s operating budget; and a bank account and routing number for electronic distribution of donations.
Arizona Gives Day is an annual giving movement uniting nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. The event helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously, creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all.
CHANGES IMPLEMENTED FOR 2020 CAMPAIGN: • A better user experience on the back end, including a new dashboard. • Notifications for failed or disputed donations. • Adjustments to the size categories for the prize pool which reached $180,000 last year, and • Weekly status updates to remind organizations to submit their profiles.
Re-enrollment is required annually and can be completed at www.AzGives.org before March 2. Registration deadline for new nonprofits is February 24. Since 2013, Arizona Gives Day has raised more than $17 million for nonprofits statewide. Presented by FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good” Arizona Gives Day is hosted by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Arizona Grantmakers Forum. “Individuals, businesses and communities joined together last year to make a dramatic difference for nonprofit agencies doing great work across our state and we want to build on that momentum by engaging even more nonprofits and donors this year,” said Arizona Alliance of Nonprofits Chief Executive Officer Kristen Merrifield. “Our ultimate goal is to provide critically important donations that enable Arizona nonprofits of every size to continue doing what they do so well in communities across the state.” Information required for registration and re-enrollment includes general information about the nonprofit; IRS Determination Letter; the most current
“Arizona Gives Day offers a number of significant options for both nonprofits and donors including the ability for year-round giving and for donors to create personal fundraising campaigns,” Merrifield said.
NONPROFITS REGISTERING OR RE-REGISTERING ALSO WILL FIND: • A “roadmap” to guide nonprofits through the registration process. • The opportunity to submit support requests online. • The ability for organizations to include any matching grant amount and their fundraising goal on their profile page. • The opportunity for their biggest fans and donors to create their own fundraising page. A full explanation of improvements and answers to important questions about Arizona Gives Day can be found at www.AZGives.org. For interested donors, AzGives.org offers an advanced search filter to find nonprofits by specific criteria, area of focus, and which donations may qualify as an Arizona tax credit. Donors can also create an account to pre-schedule donations or can check out as a guest, set up recurring donations, and make changes to their giving throughout the year. “We want to make giving as easy as possible,” Merrifield said. deervalleytimes.com

BE BALLOT READY FOR 2020 ELECTIONS WITH NEW MARICOPA COUNTY WEBSITE MARICOPA COUNTY VOTERS NOW HAVE A NEW WAY TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTIONS IN 2020: BEBALLOTREADY.VOTE. Voters can make changes to their voter information, find what upcoming elections they are eligible for, sign up for text alerts, explore the new ballot style and more. The Maricopa County Elections Department and Maricopa County Recorder’s Office launched the website with a new campaign to educate voters about the March 17 Democratic Presidential Preference Election and how to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020. Ads will run in both English and Spanish across a variety of platforms. The County is investing in voter education to improve the voter experience. A key piece of this campaign is to inform voters that only registered Democrats can participate in the Presidential Preference Election on March 17. “We are expecting historic voter turnout in 2020, so it’s important that we do everything we can to make sure voters are informed about upcoming elections,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman, District 3. “Be Ballot Ready is an easy way for residents to find everything they need from
looking up whether they are registered to vote, to when’s their next election, and what’s on their ballot.”
You have everything to gain by losing the weight.
The campaign will also introduce a new mascot “Phil the Ballot.” Modeled after the county’s new oval ballot style, “Phil the Ballot” will encourage voters to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020. “I am excited to introduce voters to ‘Phil the Ballot.’ We hope this character will get voters excited and engaged with the election,” said Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes. “There is a lot of important information that voters need to know about the elections, and Phil can help voters Be Ballot Ready.” Kicking off the 2020 election season, Tempe and Chandler are holding citywide elections on March 10. The following week, registered Democrats throughout Maricopa County have the opportunity to vote in the Democratic Presidential Preference Election on March 17. Because the Presidential Preference Election is not a primary, registered independents are not eligible to vote. The Republican and Libertarian parties have opted out of holding a preference election. To participate in the Presidential Preference Election, voters must be a registered as a Democrat by February 18. For more, visit BeBallotReady.vote.

Kids & Golf IN ARIZONA I
By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
t’s February, which in Arizona means prime golf season. Ranked as the second “golfiest” state in the union by Golf Magazine (only Florida ranks higher), our state hosts the best-attended golf tournament in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and is home to seven of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 courses. Our stunning desert and mountain views serve as a backdrop to a world class golf experience, and we can’t think of a better location to introduce the game of golf to your youngsters. There are many kid-friendly golfing facilities, camps, and training resources available in the Valley of the Sun.
any sport is to have fun. Golf is no exception. When you take your kids out to the course, rather than focusing on developing the proper swing and learning the fundamentals right away, let them enjoy just whacking the ball around and being creative. Experts recommend that adults focus on having fun with golf initially, rather than trying to develop a great swing or technical ability, so that your kids will be more likely to want to go to the course with you again. Playing frequently is the biggest key to developing a golfer; learning proper technique will come as you child’s excitement for playing golf grows.
Here are a few tips for getting your kids started on the right foot when you introduce them to golf.
It’s also a good idea to start with the short game when you’re getting kids interested in golf. It can be hard for small children to get a golf ball into the air, but almost anyone can putt. Take your kids to play mini-golf, or to the driving range to practice and learn about the game. Also, take time to teach them about golfing rules and etiquette while you play, and emphasize that this is a fun activity – there should be no pressure, even if they can’t hit the ball very well.
TEACHING THE GAME AND KEEPING IT FUN The most important thing to remember when teaching kids how to play

Wear sunscreen, hats, and the proper attire required by the course you plan to play on, and plan ahead for water, weather, and snacks. One of the most important things to think about is kidsized equipment. Many experts say that a putter is the best choice as a kid’s first club, then a 9-iron training club because it is fun and easy for kids to hit the ball in the air off of a tee. The weight and length of clubs makes a difference in a youngster’s ability to swing the club, so take time to visit a local golf store or pro shop to make sure your child’s clubs fit properly as they grow and develop. But a word of advice: golf equipment can be very expensive, so save your money until you know that golf is a good fit for your kid. Many instructors and courses have loaner equipment that your child can use until they start getting excited about playing on a regular basis.
KIDS GOLF RESOURCES There are hundreds of golf courses here in the valley, so do some research before you go to make sure that the course you want to play is kid friendly. Find out the course policies and costs of tee times, equipment rentals, and dress code so you can prepare ahead of time. Here are a few websites for some great advice on making golf a fun and enjoyable activity for you and your kids, as well as information on camps and competitive play. www.pga.com/story/nine-tips-tohelp-junior-golfers www.jgaa.org www.boysgolfclub.org www.girlsgolfofphoenix.org Be sure to check out LadybugsBlog. com for more articles and recommendations for fun things to do outside with kids everywhere in Arizona!

LOCAL BUSINESSES HELP STUDENTS
FIND EMPLOYMENT SUCCESS
A
unique program has brought together Deer Valley’s small businesses with students with disabilities to give students skills for successful employment long into the future.
Individuals with disabilities are employed at far lower rates than those without. In the state of Arizona, the employment rates for individuals with disabilities is 34.1 percent, compared to 72.6 percent for those without. The Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) Transition from School to Work (TSW) Program provides students with career exploration, workbased learning opportunities, assistance with job searches, and more. “In developing partnerships with community businesses, our students gain hands-on real world skills in the natural employment setting. Additionally, we are able to educate businesses about the skills and talents these individuals bring to the companies,” said Stephanie Johnson, Ed.D, Transition Coordinator/TSW. Elevate Coffee’s Troy Hailpern connected with a school staff member at a DVUSD business partner networking event. “I was looking to support our local high school with the skills and resources that Elevate Coffee has to offer. Great people in the district make it a pleasure to give what we can,” said Hailpern. That connection led to the creation of the “Eagle Grind Coffee Cart,” which serves coffee and tea from Elevate. Students take orders, sell, and deliver
to teachers and staff at Sandra Day O’Connor High School. Students learn food safety skills, money skills, and time management. Senior Nina Coppola said, “This experience teaches me how to work as a team member, helps me sharpen my customer service skills and gives me real life experience I will be able to use in the future.” “The students are able to demonstrate skills that we work on in the classroom. The value in these business partnerships is that students are also exposed to new skills that they can only learn in a work setting,” said TSW Senior Teacher Allison Caylor.
95% of DVUSD schools are rated A or B!
Kindergarten Registration Now Underway
“I feel like my self-esteem and confidence have increased. We are providing a service the teachers enjoy, and that makes me feel happy,” said Coppola. Senior Bryanna Baker says her work experience at the Men’s Warehouse also built her confidence. “I have learned the ins and outs of the store and have had hands-on experiences. After seeing that my qualifications fit their expectations for the job, I applied and was hired!” “The work based learning opportunities have provided hands-on learning experiences for the students in the field of their interest. The students came back from visiting Sweeteez excited about the baking field,” said TSW Technician Renee Manley-Medic. Sweeteez is new bakery in North Phoenix run by three sisters. “One of our goals in opening our store was to be a community-minded bakery. Our partnership has been one way we’re working towards that goal. The students have done an excellent job,” said younger sister Chelsea Jenkins. “It has helped us incredibly, by freeing up some of our time to work on other aspects of the business. We hope to continue to grow with DVUSD and who knows -- maybe some of these students will be on the Sweeteez team!”

COVER STORY
SPRING TRAINING IS UP TO BAT THIS MONTH
By Molly Cerreta Smith
O
ne of the greatest times of the year to be a valley resident, in my opinion, is during Spring Training! The amazing weather, the array of beautiful stadiums and the amount of sheer baseball talent that flocks to the valley throughout February and March in the name of Spring Training all add up to a great time, regardless of which team is up to bat. With convenient stadiums within reach in every area of the valley, there’s no excuse not to get out and catch a game during Spring Training. Attending Spring Training games is one of my favorite pastimes, and I’m not alone in declaring my love for Spring Training. The City of Peoria’s Mayor Cathy Carlot calls spring training one of the City’s favorite seasons of the year. “Now in our 27th year, Peoria is proud to be the spring training home of the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres. While we continue to host the best lawn seating experience in the Cactus League, over the years, Peoria has worked hard to elevate the fan experience through a series of upgrades and new amenities,” Mayor Carlot says. “This includes more shaded seats, a children’s splash and play zone–the first of its kind in the Valley, and a private, luxury room available for up to 200 guests that offers a VIP experience with a private patio overlooking the diamond.” This year, baseball fans in the Peoria area can enjoy the action and excite-
ment of watching pre-season baseball with multiple food and beverage options that range from a Burger Bar to various specialty items like the jalapeno-wrapped foot-long hot dog, mac n’ cheese hot dog, family-size souvenir helmet nachos, and street tacos.
Mayor Carlot adds, “With many unique amenities designed to keep the entire family entertained, this year we are also proud to continue our discount program for Peoria residents called Resident Rewards. This offer allows Peoria residents a chance to save 25% on tickets and receive free parking. Additional game promotions include events like Dog Days, Kids Days, Friday night happy hours, and Hometown Heroes to support our veterans and active military. And, as always, Autograph Alley and the practice fields are open for up close interactions with the players.” The Peoria Sports Complex opened in 1994 and was the Cactus League’s first two-team facility. After an incredible partnership that spanned more than two decades with the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, in 2013, the teams signed an agreement for another 20 years. This long-standing partnership is a tremendous point of pride for the City of Peoria, and a unique opportunity for families and friends to join together in celebration of America’s favorite pastime. Over in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Stadium is a fan favorite. Due to the fact that it’s nestled so supremely in Old Town Scottsdale, baseball fans can also enjoy the best of
the surrounding area including amazing hiking, bicycling, shopping, dining, arts and entertainment. Free three-hour parking is available and free Old Town trolley, which extends its route to Scottsdale Stadium starting 90 minutes before and ending 30 minutes after each game, is a great way to catch a game as well as a ride around exploring the sites of Old Town! There is something to be said for the charm and history of Scottsdale Stadium, and according to Karen Churchard, Director of Tourism and Events for the City of Scottsdale, it still sits on the same corner where the original wooden bandbox was built in 1955. As the location for the San Francisco Giants Spring Training “home,” Scottsdale Stadium and the City of Scottsdale itself has become a highly desirable tourist destination for baseball fans from far and wide with its great weather, outdoor recreational amenities and world-class resorts and spas. In fact, Spring Training serves as a powerful economic booster for the City. According to the 2015 Cactus League Attendee Tracking Survey, the total economic impact of Spring Training at Scottsdale Stadium is nearly $28 million, which includes spending that occurs in Scottsdale by residents and out-of-town visitors attending the games. Estimated tax revenues to the City as a result of this spending is nearly $695,000. This year, Scottsdale Stadium boasts a new and improved famed Charro Lodge, featuring an exclusive elevated
experience on the second level, a new social bar located in the Corral, more permanently shaded structure and 20% more capacity. The private facility within the stadium offers fans a VIP experience and with the Charro Lodge pass includes general admission, complimentary food and beverages, patio-style seating with optimum views of not only the game but of the fabulous people watching for which Scottsdale Stadium is known. Many of the nearby restaurants and bars get in on the Spring Training action by offering specials during games as well as transportation via bus or otherwise to and from the games. Tickets for Scottsdale Stadium can be purchased at www.sfgiants.com During Spring Training, the Arizona Diamondbacks share their home, Salt River Field at Talking Stick, with the Colorado Rockies. The stadium itself has become an integral part of the rapidly growing entertainment district that draws thousands to its multitude of attractions beyond just baseball. Salt River Field prides itself on building “the biggest and best spring training baseball facility in the country.” With a wide array of dining and drinking options, a beautiful layout and surrounding mountain views, it’s tough to argue that point. From Camelback Ranch in Glendale to Tempe Diablo Stadium, there are opportunities from one end of the valley to the other in which to catch a game while enjoying a frosty brew and a classic ballpark dog (and some of the that wonderful people watching) under the glorious Arizona sun.

THINKING ABOUT SELLING YOUR HOME IN 2020? STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE LISTING
By Chad Arend, The Arend Team
I
n follow up to the article I wrote last month regarding the initial steps to purchasing a home, I thought I would write one for those thinking about selling your home. This won’t be the actual process of selling, rather a discussion of the thought process and steps you can take in advance of actually putting your home on the market. First, start by working backwards. This includes two things; where you’re going to live next, and when do you want to move into your new home? This is important, because it will provide less chance of having to scramble to find a home should your current home sell very quickly. If you’re not considering purchasing a home after moving from your current home, this will make it much easier on the timeframe, depending on what exactly you’ll be looking to move into.
However, if you are considering purchasing a new home once your current home sells, then you’ll most likely be looking at a “contingency purchase.” For more on how this process works, see my blog. Generally speaking, early in the process, you’ll want to know approximately where you want to move, your rough budget and available inventory within those parameters to see if homes you might like are likely to be on the market when it is time for you to start shopping.
If you are planning to purchase a home after selling your current home, you should check into financing (if needed) as soon as possible. It’s important to know that you won’t have any problems with obtaining a mortgage on the future purchase, since you might not be able to stop the sale of your current home without breaching the contract with your buyer. Even if you aren’t going to be purchasing before the next six to nine months, contact the lender to see

what you can do to either improve your credit score, establish a down payment goal, etc.
When making the important decision to choose a Realtor, focus on neighborhood expertise; look for hyperlocal. Be sure to ask their work experience, and what resources they’ll use to market the property in addition to their opinion of value and marketing timeframe.
As far as timeframe is concerned, a fairly good rule of thumb to follow is: • One to two weeks to prepare to go on market • 60 days on market before accepting a contract (this number can widely vary depending on the market for your home - this is the current Maricopa County average) • 30-40 days to close the transaction after offer acceptance Based on this timeframe, it takes about three to five months from start to finish. Timeframes could vary depending on market style for your home, if the buyer is paying cash or financing, and how inventory compares to demand. While considering all the above, you’ll want to start deciding which Realtor you will use to help with the process.

GETAWAY
Arizona's West Coast
GETAWAY TO WESTERN ARIZONA LAKE HAVASU
W
ay out west, along the Colorado River, the “west coast” of Arizona stretches from north of Hoover Dam to just south of Yuma and the border of Mexico. Although the summers can be even hotter than Phoenix, winter is a great time of year to visit, and the Colorado River and Lake Havasu provide a cool getaway for every water enthusiast all year round. Here are a few places we recommend you check out when you head for Western Arizona. LAKE MEAD AND THE HOOVER DAM Built in 1936, the Hoover Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power facilities in the country today and provides hydroelectric power to Arizona, California, and Nevada. One of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, the immense dam spans the Black Canyon between Arizona and Nevada, creating Lake Mead along the Colorado River. Visitors can see the dam up close by driving down a winding road into the canyon and parking to take a tour of the historic art deco structure. The byproduct of this fantastic feat of engineering is 700 miles of Lake Mead shoreline, an attraction for water and outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all kinds. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was the nations first designated recreation area, providing 1.5 million acres of preserved recreational space 16 • February 2020 • DEER VALLEY TIMES
By Jill “MamaBug” Frier across mountains, canyons, valleys, wilderness areas, and two lakes, Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. ROUTE 66 AND GRAND CANYON WEST A bit further south as you head down I-40, you find many areas of the highway that run right along the historic Route 66, including Kingman, considered to be the heart of Route 66. Tiny towns a little east of Kingman also give you a taste of the historic Route 66, like Peach Springs or Seligman, the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.” Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Reservation and is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon West has two main locations: The West Rim, which is accessible from State Route 93 on the way to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, is the site of the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon. The second location is Peach Springs, located along a well-preserved stretch of the historic Route 66 and is the gateway to beautiful Havasu Falls at the bottom of the canyon. LAKE HAVASU Further down the Colorado River on Arizona’s border, along Highway 95, you will find the world-famous London Bridge, now a permanent resident of Lake Havasu City. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River border of California
and Arizona, this area attracts visitors with its 50 miles of pristine lake and river waterways, laid-back community, and ideal climate for people who love the water and outdoors. Lake Havasu is also home to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and many undeveloped wilderness areas along the Colorado River. YUMA About two hours south of Lake Havasu and Parker, you’ll find Yuma, a frequent stopping point for travelers between Phoenix and San Diego. As one of the easiest spots to cross the Colorado River, Yuma developed a unique and exciting history in the Old West Arizona Territory. Visitors can also enjoy the cool waters of the river nestled in the mountainous Sonoran Desert, play in the sand dunes, and visit many historic sites throughout the city. Whether you visit the famed Yuma Territorial Prison or the Colorado River State Historic Park, you’ll enjoy a visit to the southernmost point on Arizona’s West Coast. Western Arizona is a great place to visit this time of year, when desert temperatures are mild and sunny. The cool Colorado River provides outdoor adventures, rich history, and natural wonders to experience. Take some time to check out the local favorites in each area, and be sure to check LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas for great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! deervalleytimes.com
MONEY
2019 TAX YEAR... KNOW BEFORE YOU FILE By William Spar, ARP
A
s early as it is into 2020, people are already thinking about tax time - and with good reason, as April 15th will be here soon! But armed with some information, there is no need to dread tax day. Here are some of the more important items to be aware of and what to take advantage of this tax season.
The big new law to note that affects virtually every retirement-saver in America (especially if you have money inside of an IRA), is the SECURE Act (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancements Act) of 2019. The condensed version of this new law is that it dramatically affects how your money is spent after you pass away, which forces you to spend it faster, regardless of your wishes. There are solutions to overcome and take advantage of this, including: 1) You have until “Tax Day” to make a contribution to your IRA for either the 2019 or the 2020 tax year. For both a Traditional as well as the ROTH IRA, the contribution limits are $5,500 if age 49 or younger, and an $1,000 additional “catch-up” provision if aged 50 and older. 2) Take advantage of a Health Savings Account (“HSA”) - these are tax-advantaged savings vehicles that help people with high-deductible health care plans set money aside on a tax-favorable basis for “out of pocket medical expenses.” The Contribution Limits are $3,500 each for Individuals or $7,000 for a family. Contributions to an HSA are tax deductible (it’s right on the first page of your 1040 form as an adjustment to income). You don’t even have to mark them as an itemized deduction for medical expenses. 3) Take advantage of Tax Credits. Tax Credits reduce the amount of income you owe the IRS. Common credits are the Earned Income Tax Credit, The Child Tax Credit or the American Opportunity Tax Credit for students or parents in college. deervalleytimes.com
“I IRS!” “I HATE HATE THE THE IRS!”
4) File an extension. Should you need more time to file your tax return, filing an extension can help. It does not, however, negate the responsibility to pay your debt by April 15 of each year. 5) Be sure to take advantage of the right deduction strategy. Deductions are the expenses you incur throughout each year that you are allowed to deduct (subtract) from your Taxable Income. You’ll either “itemize” your deductions (adding-up your actual 2019 receipts) OR you’ll choose the Standard Deduction with a “pre-set” dollar amount. Check with your taxadvisor for exact amounts. You’ll obviously want to choose the deduction strategy that has the most deductionimpact for your situation. 6) Take some time to also learn about the new law that went into effect that changes the Required Minimum Distribution (“RMD”) age, especially if you’re nearing age 70 already. This affects you! 7) Another new law introduces and allows for the addition of certain types of Annuities into existing 401k plans. These are excellent tools that can guarantee a stream of income that can last for your entire retirement. But be aware, there are good ones and certainly bad ones. ARP Tax Pro is here to help answer any of the above items or discuss any other topic pertinent to your situation. Reach us by calling 623-889-3403. ARP (Advanced Retirement Planning) has been selected for the 2019 Phoenix Award in the Tax & Investment Services category by the Phoenix Award Program. MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal
UNCUT GEMS
The Safdie brothers might currently be the best directors at making an audience root for the most irredeemable characters possible. Howie Bling, played incredibly by Adam Sandler, does almost everything wrong - constantly screwing over and hurting his family, friends, and business associates. Knowing all of that, there is something about his charm and mannerisms that make you want him to sink that half court shot. The brothers’ dark comedy and panic attack-esque filmmaking style also shines here in scenes that can make you laugh at even the most horrifying of moments. Bolstered by Daniel Lopatin’s score and a colorful supporting cast, you’ve got an experience that feels like the lost Martin ScorseseRobert De Niro collaboration. While this film likely won’t be for everyone, I highly recommend it.
6 UNDERGROUND
This is Michael Bay without limits and that’s not necessarily good. Imagine his immature humor, over the top action and frantic editing…and then multiply it by 10. Now imagine one-dimensional characters, lazy continuity errors, obnoxious comedy and exploitation of some serious real-world horrors. None of the actors, despite being highly talented, bring anything to the table and Bay confirms that the charm of his insane style wears off after an opening 10-minute car chase scene. At least he avoids exceeding a 2hr and 15 minutes run time.

THE GRUDGE
The most disappointing films are the ones that feel like they waste all of their good qualities. Taking the anthology format of Grudge in a new direction with an R-rating, an interesting director like Nicolas Pesce and a great cast seems like a perfect idea. Unfortunately for the viewers, somewhere something went horribly wrong. There are no characters here, only archetypes (the haunted cops, the soon-to-be parents, etc.) The horror consists of nothing more than jump scares. Overall, the movie doesn’t do anything unique or interesting. The worst part was that somehow, in a series where there was always a sense of dread, grief or trauma, the film continuously pulls punches leaving it flat and almost comedic. While it’s still early in the year, I believe this will be one of 2020’s most underwhelming films.

1917
Like a horror film, 1917 makes each moment feel like the difference between life and death. The long takes aren’t there just for the sake of showing off, but for Director Sam Mendes and DP Roger Deakins to place you in the shoes of the characters. This film mirrors real life with sudden, pivotal moments that change the course of everything, and everyone effected. The actors mesh perfectly in their roles - particularly the decision to give the minor/ supporting roles to major actors, portraying a sense of importance without taking away from the leads. The production design and looks are also incredible. My favorite nightmare is the detail given to No Man’s Land. As a whole, 1917 was an intense, emotional experience.

MAKING CONNECTIONS New to a networking event? Don’t be shy – jump right in! At one point or another, everyone there was a newcomer, so don’t hesitate to approach new people, introduce yourself and ask them about their business/company and what brings them to the event. This is the easiest way to start getting the most out of the event and start connecting with new people. SENSE OF COMMUNITY Joining a group of like-minded people can not only help people make connections, but it can also build a sense of community. Businesses in the same neighborhood or in the same industry can really benefit from building a community that supports one another. EXPANDING YOUR REACH Networking is also beneficial for helping people expand their circle and reach new people they might not have otherwise met or done business with. For those that are new to the area, starting with a new company, opening a new business or wanting to expand their businesses, networking allows the perfect opportunity to meet new people and get connected with other businesses.

SHARING NEW IDEAS Whether or not people in the network-
ing group are in the same industry, they can share ideas, bounce thoughts off one another and help create new and different solutions to the “same old” challenges. Getting a diverse range of opinions, advice or support on a topic is one of the greatest benefits of being part of a networking group. GAINING REFERRALS Some of the best advertising one can get is the referral of a friend, colleague or business associate. By expanding their reach and making new connections, businesses can truly benefit from great a great resource of referrals. ADVANCING YOUR CAREER Networking isn’t just for business owners and top-level execs. There are benefits to networking if you’re looking for a new job, looking to gain more experience or find a mentor, or if you’re looking to move up the ladder. INCREASING YOUR PROFILE Those that are part of the regular networking scene are the ones that people begin to recognize and see as a source of knowledge and advice. When you’re looking to become a part of a community, this is an extremely powerful tool.
Networking events allow you an opportunity to get out there, make yourself more visible, and introduce yourself and your company to a whole new group of people. There are so many ways that individuals and businesses as a whole can benefit from taking the time to network. It’s usually a social environment, so don’t stress too much about trying to get a hard sales pitch in right then and there. Focus on making genuine connections first, and the rest will come.
