Message from the Headmaster

This week, pupils from across the Trust enjoyed a timely performance of Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Year 10 students from Cranmore and Manor House were treated to an engaging production by Quantum Theatre in the Auditorium, helping to deepen their understanding of this key English Literature GCSE text.

Our Year 7 pupils also took part in an inspiring online workshop led by award-winning poets Karl Nova and Nikita Gill, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. Karl, a familiar face from previous visits, and Nikita shared valuable insights on observation, repetition, and writing from the heart guidance that was warmly received by all.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our senior school Mass this week. It was a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together in celebration of our patron saint, St Andrew. In the weeks ahead, we look forward to welcoming families for festive events such as the Nativity and Carol Service. Pupils are working hard to perfect their performances, and we are looking forward to sharing these memorable occasions with you.

A Christmas Carol Performance for Year 10

A wintry London scene was recreated in the Auditorium on Tuesday 25th November for the retelling of A Christmas Carol by the Quantum Theatre company. Watched by our Year 10 pupils and their peers from Manor House, three actors brought Dickens' festive ghostly tale to life with some musical accompaniment. A Christmas Carol is one of the set texts for the AQA English Literature GCSE and this production allowed the audience to appreciate the story, the characters and some of Dickens' themes, particularly the treatment of the poor at Christmas.

Poetry Workshop for Year 7

On Tuesday, our Year 7 pupils joined a live online workshop led by poets Karl Nova and Nikita Gill, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. The two acclaimed poets shared practical tips for writing poetry, emphasising their core message: everyone can be a poet.

They explored techniques such as observation, repetition, and writing from the heart. Pupils were especially excited to see Karl Nova again, following his inspiring visit earlier this term.

Chaplaincy Tuck Shop

On Thursday morning, our Faith in Action team, supported by Year 11 helpers, hosted a charity tuck shop for Senior pupils. Fairtrade advent calendars, freshly baked cookies and chocolate were among the treats on offer, and the event raised over £400 for this term’s chosen charity, Mary’s Meals.

A big thank you to all our volunteers for making this popular fundraiser such a success!

St Andrew’s Day Lunch

On Thursday, our fantastic catering team treated us to a special themed lunch in honour of St Andrew’s Day. St Andrew is the patron saint of our school, and the celebration featured a mouthwatering menu including Neeps and Tatties soup, Highland Beef Stew topped with puff pastry, traditional Stovies, Scottish oatcakes, and a classic Cranachan dessert.

The Senior School enjoyed a fantastic block rugby fixture against Ewell Castle on Saturday, with teams ranging from U12 to U15. On Wednesday, our U16s and Effingham Sixth Form faced Glyn in a thrilling match, securing a 19-14 victory, while our U12s and U13s competed in another competitive block fixture against Lord Wandsworth. Adding to this week’s sporting highlights, three senior pupils reached the quarter-finals of the ISGA Nationals a tremendous achievement at this level. Meanwhile, Year 7 and 8 pupils have been focusing on personal survival skills during their swimming lessons. Best of luck to all players preparing for the upcoming rugby fixtures against Thomas’s College and Churcher’s College. We look forward to more outstanding performances!

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favoured one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Reflection

We have entered the season of Advent a time of preparation, light, and hope. Mary embodies the spirit of Advent: chosen to bear and carry God’s Son, she is a model of faith and trust, even in the midst of uncertainty and change. This Advent, let us draw closer to God and echo Mary’s courageous “yes.” May we realign our lives toward the living God who loves us.

Prayer

“Christ, our Light, shine within us with hope and promise. Grant us clear vision so we remain attentive to this sacred season. Help us to seek you in simple acts of kindness and love. We await your coming with hearts full of wonder.”

Amen

"At this Christmas when Christ comes, will He find a warm heart? Mark the season of Advent by loving and serving the others with God's own love and concern."
