Message from the Headmaster

As the exam period draws to a close, I would like to commend all Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils for their focus and dedication over the past three weeks. They have impressed us with their commitment to doing their best and the mature, thoughtful approach they have consistently demonstrated.

It was fitting, during assembly, to take a moment to place our daily efforts in a wider context as we welcomed a volunteer from Mary’s Meals. They explained how the charitable funds raised by our school are making an immediate difference to the lives of others. The organisation provides children in some of the world’s poorest communities with a nutritious meal at school, giving them the energy to learn and the opportunity to build a pathway out of poverty. Our inspirational speaker highlighted that, with support from communities like ours, Mary’s Meals is able to serve food to more than three million children every school day across 16 countries.

The work of our Senior School Council has also been impressive and reflects how highly the pupil voice is valued at Cranmore. Representatives have been actively canvassing their peers and presenting thoughtful, wellconsidered proposals, ranging from new clubs to fresh ideas for house events, including pickleball, art competitions and pancake flipping. Their organisation of community-minded activities, such as the Hug in a Mug hot chocolate sale and the success of Christmas Jumper Day, demonstrates a strong commitment to both enjoyment and charity. Next week’s visit to Parliament will further strengthen their understanding of how democratic participation works in practice and inspire continued leadership within our school community.

The remarkable breadth of sporting opportunity at Cranmore has been especially evident over the past week. Our swim squad shone at the English Schools event on Saturday, while the rugby teams showed great spirit as they embraced the challenge of the weather during their fixtures and competitions. Meanwhile, both our ski and rowing squads continued to enjoy their training sessions, combining purposeful practice with the camaraderie that makes sport so rewarding. I would also like to extend my best wishes to our hockey players competing at King’s this weekend.

Mary

On Wednesday, our senior pupils enjoyed an inspiring assembly delivered by Roy Peachey from Mary’s Meals. As part of our ongoing focus on compassion, we have chosen to support this charity through fundraising throughout the year.

Mary’s Meals feeds more than 3 million children every day, with each meal costing around 10p and being provided in a school setting. For just £19.15, a child can receive meals for an entire year. The assembly conveyed a hopeful and uplifting message, highlighting how small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact.

ESSA Swimming

Last Saturday, six pupils from Years 7 to 11 took part in the English Schools Individual Swimming Event at Guildford Spectrum. The pupils performed well throughout the evening, swimming either 100m in their chosen stroke or the 200m Individual Medley.

Cranmore achieved five top ten finishes, with Jack T recording an impressive seven second personal best.

Well done to all those involved:

Year 7: Jack T

Year 9: Henry C, Sebastian P

Year 10: Daniel B

Despite some challenging weather conditions, it has been another busy and successful week across the sports programme, with pupils continuing to compete and train with great commitment.

Our U14A and U14B football teams remain unbeaten, a record also shared by the U12A and U12B rugby sides, who continue to demonstrate excellent development and consistency. The U12C rugby team were outstanding in their fixture against Shrewsbury House on Wednesday.

The U15 football teams travelled to Glyn School yesterday for a set of competitive away fixtures, while attention now turns to tomorrow’s matches, where the U14 and U16 hockey teams will take on King’s College Wimbledon.

More than 40 skiers continue to demonstrate outstanding dedication through their weekly Monday evening training sessions at Sandown. Our performance ski squad has also maintained its high standards, undertaking an intense double session every Friday and making full use of both the ski simulator and the Athletic Development Centre to further their technical and physical preparation.

Meanwhile, our rowers have been working hard this week, making effective use of the rowing tank at Molesey Rowing Club to refine their technique, alongside land-based training at Walton Rowing Club. This combination of technical and conditioning work has provided invaluable development opportunities as they progress further into the season.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A reading from the Gospel of Matthew

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Reflection

As we turn on the news, we are often confronted with a world that is not at peace with itself a world that is broken and full of disorder. Yet Jesus reminds us that God enters our world to restore it to the good, to bring it back to God. Our human hearts are made for peace and remain restless until they rest in Him. Let us seek, this week, to build relationships and to bring peace to the places we inhabit.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,

You are the true King of peace.

In You alone is found freedom.

Please free our world from conflict.

Bring unity to troubled nations.

Amen.
