On Thursday, four of our Senior pupils won the UKMT Team Maths Challenge Regional Final, beating other local schools such as RGS Guildford, Guildford High School and Reed’s. Huge congratulations to our team for this outstanding achievement and to their teachers for nurturing their passion for mathematics. We wish them every success as they progress to the National Finals in Manchester.
Year 11 have been focused on their presentations for the non-examined part of their GCSE English, delivering polished presentations built on independent research and clear, purposeful communication. This work not only sharpens their ability to investigate ideas in depth but also strengthens the essential skill of presenting with confidence, abilities that will serve them well in further study and in life beyond school. They also joined pupils at Manor House for a performance of An Inspector Calls, a valuable opportunity to revisit the plot, characters and themes of their modern drama set GCSE text in a vivid and memorable way
Year 10 pupils brought tremendous energy to the Esports regional qualifier, performing strongly and only narrowly missing out in their final match. Alongside the excitement of competition, Esports helps build digital literacy and problem-solving skills, areas that are increasingly recognised in the wider world, where organisations may use gamebased assessments to understand candidates’ critical thinking, adaptability and teamwork in a dynamic and engaging way. The spirit of competition continued later in the week with a team of pupils from Years 8 and 9 competing in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge showcasing their mathematical dexterity, teamwork, and communication skills against pupils from other schools in the region.
Our Lenten Mass and lunch on Thursday were opportunities for our community to reflect on the meaning of Lent and community, and to raise funds for those less fortunate than us.
Finally, we send our very best wishes to the choir as they travel to Paris this weekend. We hope they enjoy both the performance opportunities and the experience of exploring such a beautiful and historic city.

Mr Savvides
Year 11 enjoyed a performance of An Inspector Calls at Manor House on Tuesday. Four actors from The Globe Players brought J.B. Priestley’s play to life in front of an appreciative audience of Year 11 pupils from both schools
Of particular interest was the commentary provided by the actors during the performance and the questionand-answer session at the end. During the latter, they discussed ways of memorising lines, the role of dramatic devices in the play and whom they deemed to be more culpable in its central tragedy.
It was a timely reminder of the play’s characters, plot and themes as the Year 11s will be writing about these in their English Literature GCSE in just under three months’ time

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread ” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God ’”
Reflection
Lent is now underway having begun last week on Ash Wednesday We often think of this season as challenging, a period of testing or struggle. Yet Lent is, at its heart, a time of growing in true freedom It invites us to loosen our grip on the things that hold us back, trap us, or deceive us Lent calls us to turn our hearts again to the One who loves us and to realign our lives with His grace
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, You entered the solitude of the desert not to display power, but to reveal the depth of Your love a love that refuses every false promise and every distorted image of God Grant us, O Lord, a heart that listens before it speaks, that seeks truth before comfort, that chooses fidelity over the easy path When we are tempted by noise, by distraction, by the illusion of self-reliance, draw us back to the simplicity of Your word In the Name of the Father. Amen.
