Effa LU

Los Angeles, United States

I am Effa LU, a spatial designer and urban researcher working across architecture, production design, and environmental planning. I hold a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours in Environmental Design from the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, with additional study in Interior Architecture at the University of Edinburgh. My academic and field experience has taken me across Hong Kong, the UK, Africa, and the United States, shaping an approach to design that moves between spatial experience, environmental systems, and different cultural contexts. Professionally, I have worked with BEAU Architects in Hong Kong, RSP Architects Planners & Engineers in Shanghai, and Gensler in Hong Kong, contributing to architectural and spatial design projects across different scales and contexts. I am currently pursuing a graduate of Urban and Regional Planning at UCLA, concentrating on Climate, Environment & Society. My research explores the intersection of spatial design, environmental systems, urban climate, and emerging technologies, with a particular interest in how data and environmental knowledge can inform the way spaces are designed and experienced. Alongside research, my design practice extends across architecture, production design, set and stage design, and speculative environments. I am particularly interested in projects where space operates beyond a physical backdrop — becoming a medium for narrative, experience, and interaction. My work ultimately moves between two scales: understanding larger environmental and urban systems, and translating them into spaces that people can physically experience.
