You can use the pins included in your welcome box or any other pins you like. If you prefer not to attach the tiles directly to a wall, consider mounting them on a board, upcycling a record album cover, using a picture frame, or another sturdy surface that can be hung or moved. Tiles can be arranged in a variety of ways: four together, in a long line, flat on a table, or individually. Each tile is 12” square, so a 2×2 arrangement will cover 24” × 24”.

For this project, we are asking you to get your inspiration from the plates* we created for our Colorblock Party Workshop prints and create a mini quilt. Use the plates as your starting point and follow your own direction. Interpret, rearrange, combine, and experiment in a way that feels natural to you. Start with the plates and take them where you want to go. Use one or two or as many as you want to inform your quilt design. Your interpretation might be literal or abstract, that is up to you. Each quilt is a response, and each one shows your style and approach. Let’s celebrate you! We look forward to seeing your response. *See about the collection and plates on the following page.

These pieces are also a great starting point for new ideas. Additional fabrics will be included so you have flexibility. You do not need to use everything. If you have extras, feel free to share them, save them, or use them later. Please include at least a portion of each of the three main prints in your quilt. You are welcome to add other materials such as upcycled denim, linen, or vintage textiles. Any technique is welcome, including piecing, appliqué, embroidery, paper piecing, or layering. You may use a pattern or work without one. If you use a commercial pattern, please include the name and designer.

Colorblock Party Workshop was created in house at Maywood Studio. We began by sketching quilt blocks in 1-inch squares based on traditional designs and geometric forms. We then built dimensional plates using cut cardboard shapes and printed them onto fabric using a small tabletop press. This process is known as relief printing, or collagraphy. From there, our design team developed the final fabrics and color stories. The collection is the result of a shared, hands-on process. See the following pages for the plates we created for the prints.

///CLASS IS IN SESSION/// Welcome to Sewing School, where there are no tests, no grades, and no required reading. This is your chance to choose what you want to explore, make something you've been dreaming about, or simply have fun with fabric. You're three quarters of the way through the mentorship, so consider this your creative elective. You choose the subject. You choose the project. You make it your own. Maybe you want to try something you've never made before. Maybe you want to revisit a technique you love. Maybe you have an idea you've been saving for the right fabrics. Or maybe you simply want to make something because it sounds fun.

Your assignment is simple: Make something you want to make

///SHOW YOUR WORK/// Give us a peek into your process and let us follow along as your idea takes shape. Share what you're making, what inspired you, what you're learning, or simply what you're having fun with. There are no wrong answers and definitely no grades. This is your chance to experiment, play, and make something that feels like you.

Your project can be a quilt, table runner, bag, pillow, accessory, garment, home décor project, or anything else your creative brain comes up with. We'd love for precuts to play a starring role, supported by coordinates and a background fabric of your choice.

There is just one required lesson: Appliqué 101 Include an appliqué element in your project using Gentle Fuse. How you incorporate it is completely up to you. Keep it simple or make it the star of the project. We can't wait to see what you come up with.

///CLASS SCHEDULE/// August 12–31 Choose your supplies

Wed, September 9th Show & Tell

Wed, September 23rd Open Studio

Wed, October 14th Final Project

Select your precuts, coordinates, and background fabric.

Send an image or video to Maywood Studio showing your fabric arrival and/or a peek at your project in progress.

Share a look at your creative process with the team. Show us what you're making, what you're learning, or where your project is headed.

Time for the final bell! Share your completed project and tell us a little about what you made, what inspired it, or what you learned along the way.

Additional posts are always welcome between these dates.

You do not need to send the finished project to Maywood Studio.

We'll send your fabric and then it's time to get sewing!

Unboxing, process photo, reel, or something completely different. It's up to you.

Your Only Homework: Have fun! Try something new. Revisit something you love. Take a creative risk. Make something just because you want to.
