One Block Wonder Quilt

The Botanica collection reflects my love for flowers and the natural world. The diversity of botanical forms inspires me—from delicate blossoms and bold florals to flowing leaf patterns and intricate seed heads. In this collection, I used a palette of rich colours to create stylised and layered designs. Subtle greens, creams, and cool blues are combined with warm caramel, peach, and soft pinks. You will also find jewel-tone purples and bright pinks shown on a smoky grey background. All of these designs started off as physical paintings on canvas or paper before being turned into repeat patterns digitally. Florals and patterns are then simplified and stylised and placed in playful arrangements. Some designs are packed densely with florals and organic forms, contrasting with others in limited colours that ensure variety for sewing projects. In this collection, I have presented my recognisable floral and botanical plant motifs in new compositions and layouts, including stripes and coordinates in different scales and colourways.

This collection is inspired by the contrast between the elegance of the masquerade and the untamed spirit of the hare. Living in Kent, close to the French border, I’ve been inspired by both British and French culture, where roses are a shared symbol of beauty and tradition. During visits to French brocantes, I was first drawn to the ornate masks and costumes that sparked my fascination with the theme of the masquerade. The charm of the châteaux and the romantic character of these markets— now popular in the UK—further shaped the aesthetic of the collection. The designs bring together elements of nature and theatrical costume, exploring themes of mystery, transformation, and grace. @penny_jeffries

I draw inspiration from my mixed media paintings, where I build each composition through many thin layers of acrylic paint. An essential part of my process is incorporating black-and-white graphic fabric directly onto the surface, allowing it to become part of the visual story. As I continue layering, the fabric begins to dissolve into the painting, creating depth, texture, and unexpected connections. I then machine quilt the finished piece, adding another dimension of line and movement before framing it as a complete work of art.

Florecer draws on the color, joy, and warmth I have experienced during my time in Mexico. The fading paint of houses in Mexico City’s Roma, with romantic shades of yellow and turquoise caught in the shadows of the setting sun; the bright plastic floral tablecloths at a roadside puesto; and the hummingbirds buzzing in my garden in San Cristóbal all appear in this collection. Florecer is a Spanish word with no direct English equivalent—it means to bloom in a literal sense, but also to thrive and to prosper. Guided by that energy of flourishing and flowering, I have enjoyed creating these abundantly colorful designs.
