In this image released by Universal Pictures, the character Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, left, and Mark Wahlberg appear in a scene from "Ted 2."
"Ted 2" a little overstuffed By LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press "Ted 2" asks a question that we never needed, or particularly wanted, to know the answer to: Is Ted, the magical, foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear, a person in the eyes of the law? While it's unfair to judge a comedy simply for a ridiculous premise, here, it also happens to be the unlikely killer of the overstuffed "Ted 2." And resolution does not come quickly enough in this nearly two-hour rumination on civil rights and abject stupidity. Part of the charm of "Ted," writer-director Seth MacFarlane's better-than-it-should-havebeen story of a grown man and his sentient stuffed animal, was how unaffectedly it treated
its talking teddy. Ted just is. No one thinks too hard about the why of it. Combining that silly foundation with Mark Wahlberg's endearingly dopey intensity was a stroke of brilliance. The movie was allowed to only be about their friendship, and it worked. Making a sequel to an original comedy is always a tough game, though. More often than not, the desire to please fans and recreate the magic of the first produces nothing more than an exaggerated rehash. In an admirable effort to go a different route, MacFarlane has instead done something hopelessly bizarre: He's given his film too much sincerity and story, and it practically crushes whatever fun does exist. This time, we meet up with Ted (voiced
again by MacFarlane) at his wedding to fellow grocery store clerk and gum-smacking bombshell Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth). Their newlywed bliss soon curdles and they decide to have a baby to save the marriage. Because the natural way of going about this business is not an option (for a few reasons), Tami-Lynn and Ted decide to try adoption. It's then that a state authority asks whether or not a stuffed animal should be afforded the rights of a human. And very quickly after that, Ted loses his job, his marriage is invalidated, and audiences are forced to endure a horrifying thing: a whiny, self-righteous Ted. So, best friend John (Wahlberg), now a sadsack divorcee, and Ted hook up with Samantha
Jackson (Amanda Seyfried), a newbie law associate who's willing to take their case pro bono, and a few montages later, they're off fighting the good fight in excruciating detail. Seriously, there are almost interesting debates over Ted's humanity and a few fairly earnest references to the 13th Amendment and Dred Scott. It's a wonder "Ted 2" didn't venture into artificial intelligence territory. Still, it's very rare for a MacFarlane venture to be completely unfunny. Even "A Million Ways to Die in the West" had moments. The highlights in "Ted 2" are almost worth it. There's a Busby Berkeley-style opening number, a fantastic Liam Neeson cameo, a riff on what the F stands for in F. Scott Fitzgerald, a "Jurassic Park" bit and a few others.
"Inside Out" witty and playful By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge "Inside Out" might not be the best Pixar movie out there. T h a t ’ s To y S t o r y 3 . I t m i g h t not have had the No. 1 opening slot this weekend because its $90 million fell short of J u r a s s i c Wo r l d ’ s s e c o n d w e e k as champion. What it does feature is a certain uniqueness that you won’t be able to shake. It’s witty and playful enough for the kids, sure, but at its heart is a story that every human being should be able to re l a t e t o – h o w o u r e m o t i o n s and memories define who we are as people. Wholly original and disarmingly astute, I c a n ’ t s a y e n o u g h k i n d w o rd s about it. The only kink in the
whole works is that it’s also re m a r k a b l y s ad, b oth i n good ways and in troubling ones. It’s not your run-of-the-mill animated feature. Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is an eleven year-old girl from Minnesota who is uprooted and moved to hipster San Francisco when her Dad’s (Kyle MacLachlan) start-up goes legit. She and her mom (Diane Lane) buck him up when the business stresses him out. They are a close family full of goofing around and mutual love for one another. The real stars of the show, though, are Riley’s emotions. The little voices inside her head are led by Joy (Amy Poehler), the head h o n c h o t h a t ’ s re s p o n s i b l e f o r making Riley the happy, plucky girl that she is and always has
been. Keeping her that way is a full-time job for which Joy is assisted by the other four fe e lings c e ntral to any yo ung girl: Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). Forget that the call sheet reads like NBC’s power lineup from 2011 for a second. Each actor voices their role as if they were handpicked to play it (and I’m sure they were). A s R i l e y m o v e s a w a y f ro m her old home she has to dwell on lost friends from her hockey team, a new school, and the weird old row house that Dad’s put them into. She’s going through a lot and the outside f o rc e s a re l e a d i n g t o a l i t t l e animosity in the Mission Control inside her mind. When Sadness and Joy are locked out and lost
amid her Long-Term Memories, Riley ping-pongs between the o t h e r t h re e s t a g e s o f d e a l i n g with her current situation. She’s moody and despondent. Sarcasm becomes her focal point and even some of her cherished Core Memories are starting to fade like the names of former Presidents and the piano lessons she used to take. The metaphors are jazzy and c l a s s y i n t h i s p i c t u re . E a c h one is visualized for us by the animators that have taken computer-rendered filmmaking to a point where, twenty years ago, we first thought it might be routinely safe. Co-directors Pete Docter (Monster ’s Inc, Up) and Ronnie Del Carmen have worked layer upon layer of intricacy into a masterwork that will bear up future viewings. This won’t be

a movie to get sick of, especially the scenes where sad-sack Smith (a Cardinal-loving St. Louis native) and the perpetually peppy Poehler have to work off of each oth er to f ur ther th eir agendas while keeping Riley true to herself. All of Riley’s emotions also have counterparts in her parents’ brains, too, and that’s a gas. Another character named Bing-Bong (Richard Kind) figures importantly into the later part of the film, but I credit the Disney machine for keeping him both secreted and un-foreshadowed to moviegoers a n d w i l l s p i l l n o m o re a b o u t him. Mums the word, but do try to keep a straight face. "Inside Out" runs 94 minutes and is rated PG for mild thematic elements and some action. I give

"Jurassic World"
Along the scaly spine of the Tyrannosaurus Rex runs the evolution of Hollywood blockbustering. Twenty-two years ago, Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" set the standard for the kind of movie the industry has, ever since, bred like test-tube dinos. Their genes are genetically modified for the requisite computer-generated effects, merchandising tie-ins and theme park-style attractions. While it's easy to lament the kind of films born out of Spielberg's box office record-setter, "Jurassic Park" was — and still is — a kind of pop perfection that has since been endlessly copied but rarely equaled. "Jurassic World," the latest incarnation of the franchise, is lacking the deft sense of wonderment, wit and suspense that guided the original. Director Colin Trevorrow, who ended his first and only other feature, "Safety Not Guaranteed," with a Spielbergian magical twist, has instead made a more biting thriller hung up on the corporate mandates of post-"Jurassic Park" Hollywood. What was once a charmingly hokey, if fatally misguided island resort off Costa Rica created by a wealthy, wide-eyed carnival showman has grown into a sprawling, monorailtraversed theme park worth billions. Jurassic World is a Dino Disney World, complete with long lines, bored teens and no shade to speak of. For better or worse, "Jurassic World" has done a very good job of recreating the theme park experience. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of science-fiction violence and peril." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"Inside Out"
"Inside Out," the latest Pixar punch to the heart, navigates the labyrinth of a young girl's mind in an antic, candy-colored romp through childhood memory to arrive, finally, gloriously, at epiphany. By now it's a familiar Pixar trajectory from wackadoodle to waterworks: We know it's coming and we know there's nothing we can do about it. The wave of tender nostalgia is going to crash down and wash us — happy, misty-eyed saps — out to sea, maybe with Nemo and Dora swimming alongside. Those moments, sentimental and sublime, come in unlikely places: the sudden understanding of a forgotten toy, the astonished realization of a bitter food critic, the flashback of a grouchy old man. The epiphanies are almost invariably about giving into the natural course of life and time: An acceptance, a letting go. Part of the magic is that even when out in space or in a rat-run restaurant, Pixar films stay earthbound. What's most striking about "Inside Out" isn't its inside-thebrain gee-whiz design, but that it's probably Pixar's most directly human story yet: An 11-year-old girl, growing up. It's an event observed and subtly manipulated by a gaggle of voices in the head of young Riley: Joy (Amy Poehler), an effervescent, pixie-haired burst of positivity; Sadness (Phyllis Smith), a blue-tinged, bespectacled mope; Anger (Lewis Black), a red block of fury; Fear (Bill Hader), a perpetually nervous squiggle; and Disgust (Mindy Kaling), a snobbish socialite. From inside the "headquarters" of her head, the quintet have all watched Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) compile personalityforming memories, each of which rolls into headquarters like a glowing pinball, to be filed away accordingly in places like long-term memories or the more central "core memories." Things begin going haywire when Riley and her parents (Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan) move from Minnesota — the scene of her idyllic, hockey-playing youth — to a rundown San Francisco town house. Sadness begins

"Infinitely Polar Bear"
In 1978, when writer-director Maya Forbes was 10 years old, her mother went away to graduate school, leaving Forbes and her little sister in the care of their mentally ill dad. The girls, and even their mom, didn't fully understand his diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Doctors still called it manic-depression in those days. Dad was unable to work, so while mom pursued studies that would improve the family's financial lot, he spent a year and a half raising their daughters in his own unconventional way. Forbes draws on her childhood for her directorial debut, "Infinitely Polar Bear," a quiet, personal film that plays as a cinematic love letter to her dad. It may be overly ambitious, aiming to make race and gender secondary themes while depicting the toll mental illness can take on a family, but succeeds with compelling performances and a deeply heartfelt story about the fatherdaughter bond. Cam Stuart (Mark Ruffalo) is crazy about his family, and also just a little crazy. He struggles with bipolar disorder, which his youngest daughter mistakenly calls "polar bear." Wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) still believes he's a capable parent, even after a mental breakdown lands him in the hospital. She leaves him in charge of their young daughters, hoping the daily routine of making meals and taking them to school will provide healthy structure to his life. The novelty wears off quickly for 10-year-old Amelia and 8-year-old Faith. They're embarrassed by their dad — he can be overly outgoing and oblivious when others are uncomfortable — and ashamed of their apartment, where clothes, clutter and his half-finished projects cover every surface. But there are upsides to Cam's ways. He helps his daughters make friends when he spontaneously rallies the neighborhood kids into a basketball game, and he stays up all night making an elaborate, last-minute costume for Faith's pageant. The girls begin to understand his fragility, and the caretaking becomes reciprocal. R AT E D : R f o r l a n g u a g e b y t h e M o t i o n P i c t u re Association of America. "The Little Death"
I come to praise the portmanteau. Anthologies, omnibuses, whatever you want to call them: Those cinematic conglomerations of disconnected or slightly interwoven stories are what I'm talking about. As a storytelling tradition, it stretches back beyond "The Canterbury Tales," and runs through "Pulp Fiction." The latest is "The Little Death," an Australian series of sex fetish fables. The portmanteau is often good fun because it's happily free of conventional structure. Many great directors have tried their hand in them, from Francis Ford Coppola ("New York Stories") to Robert Altman ("Short Cuts," ''Nashville"), and Roberto Rossellini ("L'Amore") to Eric Rohmer ("Six in Paris"). When portmanteaus work, they have an internal rhythm of their own, like the time zone-skipping clocks of Jim Jarmusch's "Night on Earth." Hopscotching from tale to tale, they can feel like dreams (Powell and Pressburger's mesmerizing "Tales of Hoffman") or mimic day-dreamed nightmares (Preston Sturges' hysterical "Unfaithfully Yours"). In others, the poetic brevity of their tales (Wayne Wong and Paul Auster's "Smoke") take on the feeling of a good short story collection. Lately, anthologies have seemingly grown in popularity on all kinds of screens, including TV's "True Detective" and "Black Mirror," and the Argentinian, Oscar-nominated movie of extreme revenge vignettes, "Wild Tales." The current appeal probably owes something to our digitally scrambled minds; author Alissa Quart dubbed multi-linear movies "hyperlink cinema." RATED: nrated by the MPAA. The film's language, violence and sex would likely merit an R-rating. RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

With nearly a quarter million copies sold in the US to date, Shatter Me marks the highest charting independently distributed album on the Billboard 200 since Garth Brooks’ “Blame It All on My Roots.” Since the release of Shatter Me, Lindsey has made a slew of national television appearances on shows such as Good Morning America, Today Show and the View and was recently honored w i t h Yo u Tu b e ’ s p r e s t i g i o u s Music Award, which recognizes

On April 29th, 2014, Lindsey released her sophomore album Shatter Me which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 album
chart and has sold 225,000 copies to date in the US alone. The album includes a collaboration with Halestorm lead singer Lzzy Hale on her smash single “Shatter Me,” which has over 27 million views on YouTube. On November 28, 2014, Lindsey released the deluxe album Shatter Me: The Complete Experience Zinepak which includes 13 songs and a full-color 48-page magazine with exclusive interviews and photos, plus word magnets. classical meet the infectious energy of dance and electronica. On stage, Stirling moves with the grace of a ballerina but works the crowd into a frenzy, “dropping the beat” like a rave fairy. Stirling is the model of a modern independent recording artist, with a symbiotic relationship with her fans. A motivational speaker in her spare time, Stirling uses her own story to show teenagers that you’ve got to have confidence in the very thing that makes you unique – then wait for the world to catch up.

Tuning In Alabama Shakes to appear at The Fox
KPNT 105.7 The Point Welcomes & The Pageant & Steve Litman Present is excited to announce Alabama Shakes with special guest Father John Misty live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, May 28 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $75, $45, $35, $30 and $25 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Sound & Color is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the Shakes’ 2012 debut Boys & Girls, which earned the group three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist. The gold-certified album’s breakthrough paved the way for the Shakes—Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson,
and touring keyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton—to become one of the most celebrated live acts in the world, as they delivered unforgettable performances everywhere from Saturday Night Live to the main stages of such festivals as Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freakout on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls “more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on,” then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into

riveting focus. The songs were written during breaks in the grueling touring schedule of a young band, sometimes by the members together and sometimes by Howard working alone at her home studio. She notes that there were several dedicated writing periods during the past year, but that “sometimes I wasn’t dedicating enough time, so I’d bingewrite, sit in the basement and work for 18 hours for five days straight.”
When the Shakes began recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio, Blake Mills—a young guitar wizard who has previously helmed sessions by Sara Watkins and Sky Ferriera, and played alongside everyone from Norah Jones and the Dixie Chicks to Lana Del Ray and Kid Rock—came on board as a co-producer to help harness all of the different ideas. With Sound & Color, Alabama Shakes prove that the response

People The History Clubhouse Missouri History Museum opens exhibit for kids For The Edge The Missouri History Museum opens History Clubhouse, the Museum’s first long-term exhibition designed just for kids. History Clubhouse offers families a chance to step back in time and discover local history in a fun and active way by exploring four favorite St. Louisarea places – Downtown St. Louis, the Mississippi River, Cahokia Mounds, and Forest Park. This FREE permanent exhibition opens June 27, 2015. “We know that kids interact with the world differently than adults do. Children learn through play,” said Lindsay Newton, youth and family programs coordinator at the Missouri History Museum. “We believe that we can serve children best by encouraging them to explore freely in a place where nothing is hands-off. We’re offering a space just for families, where kids can be kids while they learn about the fascinating history of our city.” History Clubhouse provides an immersive historical experience for children and their families. As they enter the gallery, kids will explore downtown St. Louis. They can walk among several of the city’s skyscrapers and help build the Wainwright building. Then, they board a trolley to go back in time. In the Mississippi River section, children will experience steamboat travel on the Mississippi in the late 1800s. They can steer a giant boat, discover the different types of cargo it would have carried, and even turn a crank to make the paddle wheel go. In the Cahokia section, families will learn about the Mississippian people who lived in the area more than 1000 years ago. Kids will farm, fish, cook, and play games like the Mississippians who once lived there.

Missouri History Museum strives to make not just a play place for children, but also a space that will spark a life-long interest in community history. History Clubhouse is unique because it was designed by St. Louis families for St. Louis families. In 2014, the Museum hosted a preview of this space called History Clubhouse: Let’s Build It! Many families came to play and put their own touch on the space. They wrote labels, shared their family photos, painted giant, colorful murals that will hang in the Clubhouse, and most importantly, provided their ideas about how this space should be designed in the future. The Museum staff spent the last 9 months incorporating their imaginative and practical feedback into new designs, and the construction process has begun. “Museums across the country are looking for ways to get visitors involved in the development of exhibits, but I don’t know of any museum that has tried something on the scale of what we did with History Clubhouse: Let’s Build It!,” said Jody Sowell, director of exhibitions and research at the Missouri History Museum. “We really threw open the process and asked kids and parents to work right alongside us to build this new space for families.” Admission to History Clubhouse is free. History Clubhouse is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm. The Missouri History Museum has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose
of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” To d a y, t h e M i s s o u r i H i s t o r y Museum seeks to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of the community; and facilitate solutions to common problems. Due to its innovative approach to public service, the Missouri History Museum was the first recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Award for Museum Services in 1994. The Missouri History Museum offers programs and outreach services, including traveling exhibitions; tours; theatrical and musical presentations; programs for school classes and youth groups; family festivals; special events; workshops; and lectures. The Missouri History Museum is funded by the St. Louis City and County taxpayers through the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District and by private donations. The Museum is open seven days a week with general admission always free. The Missouri History Museum in Forest Park also operates the Library and Research Center at 225 South Skinker Boulevard near the Washington University campus.

People Here's the scoop on getting to Fair Saint Louis at the least expense and with the fewest headaches For The Edge After a successful debut in Forest Park in 2014, during which fairgoers experienced a hassle-free time getting to and from the new venue, Fair Saint Louis officials are pleased to reveal that the transportation plan for the 2015 event will retain the best of what worked so well last year, while incorporating a few new elements to further enhance the experience for fairgoers. The transportation plan has again been developed in collaboration w i t h S t . L o u i s M e t ro p o l i t a n Police; MoDOT; the city’s Streets Department and Parks Department; Metro Transit and others to get fairgoers safely to and from Forest Park for the Independence Day celebration July 2, 3, and 4. “As always, safety is our first priority and convenience our second,” said Steve Pozaric, the Fair ’s general chairman. “We demonstrated last year that if people take advantage of the information on the website, they will find we have plenty of ways to get to the park, including walking, cycling and mass transit, and we will have more than enough parking for people who want to drive. Fairgoers can expect another unforgettable experience at ‘America’s Biggest Birthday Party.’” The plan, detailed at www. fairsaintlouis.org, provides specific, recommended driving routes to be used to access the Fair from all different parts of the St. Louis region, in an easy-to-understand and ready-to-print format. While fairgoers are again encouraged to use alternative modes of transportation, the plan does include thousands of dedicated parking spots in and near Forest Park thanks to collaboration with a range of partners, including Forest Park Community College, Washington University, Metro and local lot owners. There will be more than enough spots to accommodate everyone driving in, even if the crowds are in line with last year’s incredible turnout. Parking costs range from free to $20 per car, depending on proximity to the fairgrounds. Maps for each of the recommended routes for accessing the Fair include the free and fee-based parking that will be accessible along that route. Parking lot attendants and local police will be on site at the end of the Fair each day to direct traffic out of the lots and back to the primary route used to access that parking area. Based on its popularity last year, Fair officials anticipate that MetroLink will again play a key role in transporting fairgoers, and Metro will have additional trains running to accommodate fairgoers. Like last year, Metro is asking fairgoers to access the Fair by using one of two key MetroLink stations the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station and the Skinker Station - both of which are in close proximity to the entrance to the fair. This will help minimize waiting times and passenger congestion, and help make it as smooth as possible getting people back on the train after the fireworks show end each night. Blue Line passengers should use the Skinker MetroLink Station for their arrival and departure; Red
Line passengers should use the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station to get to and from the Fair. The Park-Ride lot at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink Station will be closed during Fair St. Louis, however the other 19 free Park-Ride Lots at MetroLink stations in Missouri and Illinois will be available for fairgoers. The transportation tab on the Fair Saint Louis website includes a link to see where the various station stations are located to assist fairgoers in planning their trip. MetroLink trains will be crowded at various times during the three-day fair, so people are asked to be patient and respectful of their fellow passengers. Changes to the transportation plan that fairgoers should know for this year include: • The paid disabled parking has been relocated to the St. Louis’ Zoo’s North Lot, where spots will be available for $20. The free disabled parking lot will again be located on Washington University’s campus on Forsyth Blvd. • A new fee-based golf cart shuttle service will be available within Forest Park for fairgoers who need a little help getting to
the fairgrounds once they have arrived at the Park. While it will be available to all fairgoers, priority will be given to the elderly or people with disabilities. Fees will range from $5 per person per trip (lap children ride free) to $20 per person for an all-day Patriot Pass. Service will only be available until 9 p.m. • Based on the large numbers who rode their bike to the Fair last year, the number of bike valets in the park has been increased for this year ’s festivities. The three locations are clearly designated on the main event site map on the Fair Saint Louis website. • The taxi stand has been relocated to Skinker Blvd. at Forsyth. • The SLU Park & Ride Lot has been eliminated from this year ’s plan, as it was used by only a few hundred cars last year, all of which can be easily accommodated in the lots closer to the Fairgrounds. Features of the 2014 transportation plan that helped to meet everyone’s shared goals for safety while avoiding gridlock are also part of the plan for 2015, including: • N o s t re e t p a r k i n g i n o r
immediately surrounding the park to keep people safe and keep traffic moving; • No pedestrians mingling with vehicular traffic in the park; • No shuttles and cars on the same roads inside the park; • Adequate parking on lots inside the park to help offset the elimination of on-street parking; • A robust shuttle system, and • A hard closing at 10:30 p.m. in order to clear the park and surrounding areas in 90 minutes; One final addition for this year is a new FairSTL app, which will be launched in the coming days so people can download it before the Fair. Through this app, fairgoers can access everything they need to enhance their Fair Saint Louis e x p e r i e n c e , r i g h t f ro m t h e i r smartphone or tablet. It includes a map of the fairground site, the full schedule of events, links to listen to music by this year ’s featured artists, a photo sharing feature, all of the transportation plan details and more. Those who download it can also use the notification feature to stay up to date on timely information on changing conditions with traffic and parking during the three days of Fair Saint Louis. The

links to download the new FairSTL app will be available on the home page at www.fairsaintlouis.org in the days leading up to the Fair. In preparing for Fair Saint Louis 2015, Fair officials also have had ongoing communication with members of the board of aldermen representing the residents of the communities adjacent to Forest Park, as well as with neighborhood presidents. “ We a p p re c i a t e t h e i r i n p u t and want to reinforce that the plan has again been developed to minimize the impact on local neighborhoods,” said Pozaric. “Area residents will find additional helpful information, including details on local road closures, on the Park Neighbors section of the website.” Pozaric added, “All the elements are in place to accommodate fairgoers and we encourage people to begin making their plans to join us in Forest Park. A safe Fair is everyone’s responsibility, and by planning ahead and following the recommendations provided, fairgoers can help to minimize traffic congestion around Forest Park and help facilitate a smoother ride for all fairgoers.”

Four performances scheduled at the Wildey Theatre By BILL TUCKER For The Edge Having spent the last 30 years involved in the theatre, Debbie Maneke never expected to be swept away by one character. But over the stretch of four days in July, she will again become Patsy Cline. Maneke, a court reporter who calls Edwardsville home, will star in "Always. . . Patsy Cline," a musical play revolving around one of country music's biggest stars and one her biggest fans. Perfomances are scheduled at the WIldey Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on July 16, 17 and 18 and at 2 p.m. on July 19. The performances are being staged as a fundraiser by The Friends of the Wildey. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased online at www. WildeyTheatre.com or by calling 307-1750. "Always. . . Patsy Cline" tells the tale of the late singer's relationship with Louise Seger, who she befriended in a Texas honky-tonk and continued correspondence with until Cline's untimely death in a 1963 plane crash. Maneke points out that "Always. . . Patsy Cline" is more than just music. "I think some people might think it's a concert. That's not at all what it is," Maneke said. According to information from the Wildey, the musical play is complete with down-home country humor, true emotion and
12
even some audience participation. The musical does include 27 songs, 24 of which Maneke sings including Cline's biggest hits: "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces," "Sweet
On the Edge of the Weekend
Dreams" and "Walkin' After Midnight." Maneke said she's played " a little bit of everything" in the theatre over the past 30 years.
July 2, 2015
That, however, changed in the last couple. "I was asked by the Alton Little Theatre, actually my friend Lee Cox, who is in the show, a couple
of years ago if I would ever be interested in playing Patsy Cline," Maneke said. Last December, "Always. . . Patsy Cline" took the stage for five sold-out performances at the ALT. "It's catching on, doing well," Maneke said. "It's a very popular show." While Cline died more than 50 years ago, Maneke said she did have some exposure to her music as a youngster. "My parents had a big, ol' console record player and we had several of Patsy's albums," Maneke said. "I remember being amazed by her voice." But memories weren't enough for Maneke, who dug into the character full bore. "I"ve spent thousands of hours, my husbands says millions, trying to get things right," Maneke said. So in addition to listening to Patsy Cline's recordings, Maneke also paid a trip to the city that helped make her a star, Nashsville., Tenn., and the famous Ryman Auditoriam. Lee Cox will portray Louis Seeger in "Always. . . Patsy Cline." Diana Enloe serves as director while Steve Louicks serves as the director of the Bodacious Bobcats Band. "Always. . . Patsy Cline" is licensed by the family and estate of Patsy Cline. All rights reserved. The original cast album is available on MCA Records. "Always Patsy Cline was created by Ted Swindley in 1988 and is based on a true story.

People People planner MoBOT brings back Lantern Festival
The Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to an international exhibition of 22 lighted works of art from Zigong, China when it debuts “Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined” in 2015. Following critical acclaim and rave reviews from visitors during the 2012 Festival, the Garden has commissioned new sets crafted from silk and steel to once again offer visitors from around the world the opportunity to see an event rarely staged outside of Asia. Lantern Festival will again be an outdoor, evening display running May 23 to August 23, 2015. “We were overwhelmed with the reaction our 2012 Lantern Festival received and for the last two years have heard from so many people asking if another festival would ever be held,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “At the same time, we have continued our botanical research in China, and feel it is fitting to highlight the growing number of botanical gardens in that country as we celebrate the continued contributions the Missouri Botanical Garden makes in science on a global scale.” Lantern festivals are a central part of Chinese culture, dating back thousands of years. Today, lant er n f e st i v a l s t r a d i t i o n a l l y mark the Chinese New Year, when complex and ornate lanterns fill cities. The 22 sets that will be seen during Lantern Festival 2015 will be constructed using traditional materials including silk, wire and porcelain. Each set will include interpretation detailing the design’s tradition, symbolism and meaning. Among the planned sets is “Soaring Dragon Horse,” located in the Garden’s Central Axis, depicting a well-known symbol in Chinese culture, the dragon horse. The dragon horse is considered a spirit of Heaven and Earth and thought to bring good fortune. “Porcelain Stupas Pagoda” will be constructed with more than 300,000 porcelain pieces including plates, bowls, spoons, teacups, ladles and wine cups. It serves as a replica of the Stupas Pagoda b uilt i n t h e Q i n g Dy n a s t y i n the Manfeilong Village of the Yu n n a n P ro v i n c e . In addition to using recycled materials in several sets, the Garden plans to conduct a sale following the conclusion of the festival for St. Louisans to take home their own unique piece of Garden history. Missouri History Museum to exhibit Nazi Propaganda The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi p ro p a g a n d a w a s m u c h m o re complex than that. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist
war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015.

Travel Celebrating a triple crown Kentucky Derby Museum to honor American Pharoah For The Edge Triple Crown champion American Pharoah is getting the celebrity treatment at the Kentucky Derby Museum. The premier Louisville attraction is celebrating the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years with multiple banners and exhibits on display throughout the museum. “American Pharoah is a special, special horse, and has cemented himself as a legend in Thoroughbred racing,” said Lynn Ashton, president of the Kentucky Derby Museum. “We’re thrilled to recognize the achievements to all of our guests and share in the celebration of our latest Triple Crown winner.” Highlights include: • Video of American Pharoah’s victory in the Kentucky Derby can be viewed in the museum’s Warner L. Jones, Jr. Time Machine, alongside other Triple Crown champions, including Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed. Video of his victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes will soon be available in the Capture the Moment exhibit. • The Winner ’s Circle exhibit, located on the first floor of the museum, features a replica of American Pharoah depicting
how he looked in the Winner ’s Circle after riding to victory in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. The horse is draped in a garland of red roses and race odds are displayed in the background on a mock tote board. • The museum’s popular 360-degree, high-definition show, The Greatest Race, which brings the Kentucky Derby to life, has been updated to feature video and audio from American Pharaoh’s win. • A celebratory banner heralding American Pharoah’s Triple Crown victory hangs outside the museum. • The Kentucky Derby Museum’s Finish Line Gift Shop is stocked with American Pharoah Kentucky Derby souvenirs. Triple Crown t-shirts and hats spotlighting the legendary horse are also for sale. • The dress that Jill Baffert, wife of American Pharoah trainer Bob Baffert, wore to the 2015 Kentucky Derby is on display at the museum. • Coming in September: A kiosk dedicated to American Pharoah is set to open at the museum in the fall and will depict the horse’s journey to nab the prestigious Triple Crown in text and photos. Also, a banner representing American Pharoah’s jockey silks will be hung from the ceiling of the museum’s Great Hall. In addition to the American
Pharoah exhibits at the Kentucky Derby Museum, Churchill Downs will be shining the spotlight on the victorious Thoroughbred on June 13. He’s scheduled to parade for the public at 8:10 p.m. during a Downs After Dark live racing event. After being the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 37 years, American Pharoah was named the 12th Triple Crown champion on June 6. He’s also the first horse to win the Triple Crown since the Kentucky Derby Museum opened in 1985. American Pharoah exhibits are free with paid admission to the Kentucky Derby Museum: $14, $13 for seniors, $11 for students 13-18, $6 for ages 5-12 and free for children 4 and younger. For more information, visit www. derbymusuem.org. Created by Nashville Ballet Artistic Director and CEO Paul Vasterling, and complete with stunning costumes and visual effects, this production of Carmina Burana takes you deep into Carl Orff’s stupendously popular music in a way you’ve never experienced. MOMIX in Alchemia January 29 & 30, 2016 Touhill Performing Arts Center T h e i r re p re s s i b l e M o s e s P e n d l e t o n presents Alchemia, his new work for the dazzling dancer-illusionists of MOMIX. Just as he led audiences on a surreal journey through the four seasons in Botanica, Pendleton manipulates the four classic elements — earth, air, fire and water — in Alchemia to produce a show about the art of alchemy, and the alchemy of art. A multimedia spectacle, Alchemia bursts with beauty, daredevil thrills and playful humor. It’s MOMIX at its most magical. In addition to stage performances worldwide, MOMIX has worked in film and television, recently appearing in national commercials for Hanes and Target, which premiered during the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Religion Confederate flag has no place in U.S.
FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton says last week's slaughter of nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina, was "an act of racist terrorism perpetrated in a house of God." In the wake of those shootings, she said the Confederate battle flag is a "symbol of our nation's racist past" that "shouldn't fly anywhere." Clinton met Tuesday with church members in the St. Louis suburbs, near the violent protests touched off last year in nearby Ferguson after the death of Michael Brown, a young black man who was shot by a white police officer. She urged church members to find ways to turn their grief, anger and despair into purpose and action. Quoting Scripture, she said, "Do not be overcome with evil but overcome evil with good."

Clinton noted that relatives of those slain in Charleston publicly forgave the accused gunman in obedience to Jesus Christ's command to forgive "70 times 7." She said the families' "act of mercy was as stunning as his act of cruelty."
Vatican sets stage for family debate
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican has set the stage for another round of debate on hot-button issues like gays, divorced Catholics and unmarried couples living together by publishing the working document for its upcoming October synod on family issues. The document released Tuesday says there's "common agreement" among a broad array of Catholics about the need to offer divorced and civilly remarried Catholics a path of reconciliation to better integrate them into the life of the church, but stresses they can
only receive Communion if they refrain from sex. It considers couples who live together not as sinners but as potential candidates for church marriage. The document says gays should be respected and welcomed, as church teaching requires, but goes no further. On the issue of contraception, the document says "natural" family planning should be taught to ensure "responsible procreation." But it adds that the conscience of each believer also should be taken into account.

Graham grandson out as pastor after affair
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida megachurch says a grandson of the Rev. Billy Graham has stepped
down as its pastor after a "moral failure." Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church says the Rev. Tullian Tchividjian (chuhVIHD'-juhn) resigned for actions that "disqualify him from continuing to serve as senior pastor." The Fort Lauderdale church offered no details, but in a statement to The Washington Post, Tchividjian acknowledged having an affair. Tchividjian, the son of Billy Graham's daughter Gigi, entered the ministry after years of youthful transgressions. He became senior pastor of Coral Ridge in 2009 after the death of its founding pastor, the Rev. D. James Kennedy, an evangelical luminary. The much younger Tchividjian's leadership soon divided the church, prompting some members to leave and start a new church. After the announcement of his resignation, Tchividjian said on Twitter, "Welcome to the valley of the shadow of death...thank God grace reigns here."

to instead send the issue to the plans and policies committee. Councilman Justin Burnett proposed posting the motto as a way to recognize the nation's heritage and not to promote a specific religion. Mayor Bob Stephens had suggested "E Pluribus Unum" as an alternative. That phrase means "Out of many, one." Opponents of "In God We Trust" said posting the national motto in a public government building would violate separation of church and state. Burnett opposed tabling the issue, saying he wanted to hear audience members' opinions. But other council members voted to delay action and consult with legal advisers.
