WASHINGTON The state of Washington consistently ranks among the top five in various rankings of the most environmentally friendly states. Recent pushes include additional mass transit to keep pace with the job-fueled population growth, especially in the Seattle area. In 2015, the League of American Bicyclists listed Washington as the nation’s most bike-friendly state. With three national parks within state boundaries – Olympic, North Cascades and Mount Rainier - Washington is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers flock to 14,410-foot Mount Rainier, about 65 miles southeast of Seattle, especially in the summer months. The abundance of water lends itself to sailing, pleasure boating, sea kayaking, fishing and whale watching. In the winter, the higher elevation areas provide abundant snow skiing options.
