NEW MEXICO Colonized by Spain, the land that is now New Mexico became U.S. territory as part of the Gadsen Purchase in 1853, though New Mexico did not become a U.S. state until 1912. Near Alamagordo, on July 16, 1945, during World War II, New Mexico was the site of the top-secret Manhattan Project. U.S. scientists raced to create the first atomic bomb, which was tested at the Trinity Bomb site In 1947. Roswell, New Mexico, became a topic of speculation about extraterrestrial life when a local farmer discovered unidentified debris on his property, which some believed was the remains of a crashed alien spacecraft. Visitors to New Mexico frequent attractions like the Very Large Array telescope in Socorro and the historic city of Santa Fe which artist Georgia O’Keeffe famously called home. Tourism is New Mexico’s leading industry. Known as “The Land of Enchantment” the state attracts millions of visitors and part-time residents annually. For many years Texans fleeing hot, humid summer weather, have been drawn to the crisp, cool mountain resorts of New Mexico. Many people go there in the summer to fish, camp, admire the magnificent scenery, or attend the various festivals and rodeos. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, one of the largest ballooning festivals in the world, takes place in early October. Indian ceremonials and ruins are also major attractions.

ETC STUDENTS LIVING IN NEW MEXICO MY EXPERIENCE IN NM CAN'T BE DESCRIBED WITH WORDS, BUT I'LL TRY MY HARDEST TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU. AS SOON AS YOU GET OUT THE AIRPORT YOU KNOW IT'S NOT YOUR HOME COUNTRY. THE SKY IS FULL OF CRAZY LOOKING CLOUDS. YOU SEE STORMS IN THE HORIZON, BUT THE SUN IS SHINING AND IT'S HOT. YOU'LL SEE THE SANDÍAS AND UNLESS YOU'RE SPANISH IT MIGHT TAKE YOU SOMETIME TO UNDERSTAND WHY IT'S CALLED LIKE THAT. YOUR HOST FAMILY IS GOING TO MAKE YOU TRY A BURRITO OR ANYTHING THAT IS HOT AND I'M SURE YOUR MOUTH WILL BURN TO TEARS! SOME PEOPLE CALL ME CRAZY BUT NOW I MAKE MY OWN SAL-SAS AT HOME AND I FEEL THEY ARE EVEN HOTTER THAT IN NM. AND I LOVE THEM! THIS STATE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL CLOSE TO YOURSELF. EVERYONE IS NICE AND OPEN MINDED. EVERYONE WANTS TO TALK TO YOU AND YOU FEEL LOVED SINCE THE VERY FIRST DAY. THE TEACHERS ARE FUN AND THEY WILL LOVE YOUR ACCENT. AT HOME YOU'LL BE PART OF YOUR - MATTHIAS (DENVER, CO) AMERICAN FAMILY AND JOIN THEIR TRADITIONS AND GAMES. FOR EXAMPLE, IN MY HOST FAMILY THEY PLAY THE POPULAR CARD GAME UNO, BUT THEY HAVE THEIR OWN RULES LIKE THE CARDS MUST BE ON THE TABLE SO EVERYONE GETS TO SEE THEM!
