Why go on a gap year? Officially, a gap year is described as a period of time, usually an academic year, taken as a break between school and university or college. But this doesn’t even begin to explain how empowering and life-changing it can be. EF's Gap Year program is designed for this purpose. A gap year is an exciting opportunity to develop new skills and put yourself outside the comfort zone. Better brain function Scientific research indicates that our brains benefit more from being multilingual. Various studies have shown that the cognitive exercises we perform in order to speak in multiple languages help to keep the brain agile and flexible, as well as reduce the risk of dementia. Imagine a gymnast who jumps straight into a routine, compared to one who spends time stretching before. It’s more likely that the stretching gymnast will be able to extend their body more and thus perform better. Why is the mind any different?
'A new path opened up for me' After Anne dropped out of university, she decided to take an EF Academic Year Abroad. She explains why it was the best decision she's ever made. "I was having a tough time at university because the course I was on did not really suit me. I realised two things. Firstly, I wasn’t happy to keep studying something I didn’t like, and secondly, that I actually didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I decided to take an EF Academic Year Abroad because I wanted to do something valuable for my future and make progress in my life. I chose to study in San Diego on a 9 -month course, where I partook in 32 English lessons a week and used EF's digital learning materials. Additionally, I participated in regular activities and student clubs to further expose myself to English. The campus was designed for this
purpose: they had a fully-equipped gym and even dance studios! Learning a new language, in which I am now fluent, has created so many opportunities for me. I feel confident again because I can communicate better, and it’s also helped me to decide what I want to do for a career. I’ve met more incredible international people at EF than I would have at university, and it genuinely feels like a community here - everyone knows each other and the EF staff are always available to help and support me in my development." Meet Anthos, an EF Mentor We sat down with EF's Anthos to get some insight into the EF Mentor program. So, Anthos, what’s your role at EF? I’m the Activities Manager at EF London. I make the fun happen!
You sound enthusiastic! So, what is an EF Mentor? Well, we know that it can be challenging to move to a foreign country, so we have EF Mentors to help make things easier. We offer guidance and support so students can adapt to life in a new city and make the most of their experience.
So it’s a bit like being a coach? I believe a coach is someone who focuses on performance and reaching a target. A mentor is different because they only offer guidance; a mentor allows the student to discover their own direction.
Do you think students benefit from an EF Mentor? Yes, definitely! The students have told me before that it’s nice to know that there is always someone available to talk to, confidentially. I’ve had some really interesting conversations too - for example about how to become a ‘local’ in London.
Are there specific times you meet your students? We schedule chats to follow-up on our students’ progress during their course, but we are quite relaxed and informal. We know that a lot happens in a year, so it’s important for us to keep regular contact and be around if someone needs to talk. Ok thanks for your time Anthos. 'Why I didn't do Erasmus' Gabriele had the option to take either an Erasmus program or EF Academic Year Abroad. She reveals why she chose the latter. "One of the first reasons is simple - EF is older and more established. Over 20 years older in fact. I really got a feel for this when I spoke to an EF representative in one of their local offices, because they were so knowledgeable and really understood the long-term courses they were offering.
