Achieve Your Dreams PXP Endurance in Carmel helps you take fitness to the next level—one goal at a time.

With a background in sports medicine and experience as an Ironman athlete and coach, Paul Plummer makes it his business to help clients find value in each and every one one of their accomplishments. (promotional content)

Paul Plummer Owner

P

aul Plummer has had a passion for physical fitness his entire life. A certified athletic trainer since 1989, he has worked at the collegiate level and is a member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame. When it comes to fitness, Plummer is quick to acknowledge that one size does not fit all. When he opened PXP Endurance in 2015, he knew it would not be a cookie cutter fitness center, and the motto, "Your Goals, Your Success," was no accident. “I want to know what your goals are,” he says, adding that goals tend to build upon one another—running a mile becomes a 5K, then a half marathon, and sometimes even longer endurance events. Plummer relies on his background in sports medicine, along with his personal experience as an Ironman athlete and coach, to help each of his clients find value in their accomplishments—whether they are running a mile for the first time or finishing an Ironman. “Whatever your goal is, I want to help you figure out the right path to accomplish that goal safely and successfully,” he says. PXP Endurance offers a wide range of services and programs tailored specifically to each client’s needs and desires, including rehabilitation, strength training, coaching, nutrition and testing.

ABSOLUTELIVING

After identifying a goal, the best place to begin, according to Plummer, is with a functional movement screen to help evaluate how efficiently the body moves. From here he can assess risk factors and offer guidance and maintenance plans. Once the body is moving well, he will add in strength and flexibility training, along with fitness components such as running, biking and swimming. His clients come in all ages, sizes and skill levels. At PXP, adolescents are welcomed and taught proper form and technique, which is important to prevent injury and bad habits from settling in, and to improve overall performance. Adults come to begin or rebuild fitness levels, as well as to rehabilitate and prevent injury. In addition to optimizing form and function, Plummer can also help manage the mental side of training, by educating his clients on strategies for perseverance and offering support and encouragement at events outside of the gym. Plummer, who lives in Carmel, believes this is a great area to cultivate a lifestyle that involves fitness, and loves the abundance of running and biking routes the city provides. He often offers weekend runs and rides along the trails to help PXP members learn and practice as a group. He says that giving back to community is also an important part of his business model, and in addition to supporting clients, PXP Endurance supports local, fitness-minded charities such as Back on My Feet and Freewheelin each quarter. PXP Endurance is conveniently located at 13686 North Meridian Street in Carmel. Anyone from novice athletes to endurance veterans can find out more about how to achieve personal fitness goals online at www.pxpendurance. com or by following @pxpendurance on Instagram and PXP Endurance on Facebook.

Family Ties PAUL BRAUN OF PURSE STRINGS

By Susan Salaz | Photography By Gabrielle Cheikh Noel | Artwork By Eduardo Peña

When Paul Braun and his wife, Heather, purchased Purse Strings in 2018, it wasn't simply about owning a boutique. It was an investment in family.

(promotional content)

ABSOLUTELIVING

P

aul and Heather Braun of Fishers have a blended family—think Brady Bunch— with three children each. Paul grew up in Indianapolis, and was the youngest of 12 kids (a distinction he shares with a twin sister). He attended college in Evansville and later moved to Orange County, California. “As I matured, I realized the importance of family and the core values here in Indiana,” explains Paul, who describes his extended family as “close knit” with many nieces and nephews. “To me, it was important for my kids to know their cousins,” he adds. Once home, however, he still found himself away on the road much of the time for his job as a sales representative and national sales manager. The days away, the missed events with his wife and kids, and the “good night, sleep tight” routine took a toll, and Paul was ready for a new way of life. When Purse Strings, once a Vera Bradley store, became available, Paul saw an opportunity. Not only did he have a relationship with the retiring owners, but he also had an extensive knowledge of specialty stores from his experience as a sales manager. This allowed him to expand upon Purse Strings prior success. Most importantly though, he saw the store as a way to break free from life on the road, allowing him precious time with Heather and his family. Paul explains, “From a personal standpoint, it was important to me to be home with my kids, and not be on the road parenting from a hotel room.” Since taking the reins three-years ago, in a bumpy time for brick-and-mortar retail, Purse Strings has significantly grown, expanding beyond the original store at Clay Terrace in Carmel to a second location in the Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing in 2019, and most recently to Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville, which opened this past April. Paul’s savvy sense of what is trending, his insight into what his customers want and need, and his top-notch selection of quality goods have all aided the store’s success. As the name implies, Purse Strings still maintains an unmatched selection of high-quality handbags, with favorite labels like Hammitt, Hobo, BedStu and Consuela. While handbags remain a large part of the equation, Purse Strings also carries men’s and women’s fashion accessories, housewares and home décor, baby items and gifts at every price point. In a time when shopping small is gaining momentum, they are committed to sourcing impressive local brands for their customers. “If we can find a quality Indiana brand our goal is to support them,” says Paul.

He still keeps the ever-popular Vera Bradley merchandise from Fort Wayne in stock, and also carries Peepers Reading Glasses, a fourth-generation eyewear company based in Michigan City. Their blue light blockers even have Oprah’s endorsement. Natural fragrances from Ambre Blends, based in Indianapolis, are one of the most popular lines at Purse Strings, and newly added local handbag company DD Bird, from Carmel, is stealing the show with their stylish and functional travel and tote bags inspired by organization. Paul also stocks repurposed library books by Re-Issue Books, made in Westfield, which make a fun gift for book lovers. Anyone who enjoys an ice-cold beverage can stock up on BrüMate triple insulated drinkware by Greenwood native and Purdue graduate Dylan Jacob, offering can and bottle coolers, winesulator gift sets, and much more.

The original Purse Strings in Clay Terrace has long been a popular destination for handbags and gifts. When Paul Braun took the reins in 2018 he took the shopping experience to a new level, expanding the range of products to include not only handbags, but also men’s and women’s accessories, home décor and gifts at every price point. As he grew the inventory, the store also grew a loyal following, and has since opened two additional locations in the Fashion Mall and at Hamilton Town Center.

One of the biggest additions Paul has implemented is a robust men’s selection. “The anchor of my men’s department is Duke Cannon, which is a men’s grooming line,” says Paul. The high quality supplies such as soaps, shaving creams and after shaves, along with beard balms and deodorant, are all American made, and come with the added bonus of quirky guy humor. Strong and sturdy Groove Life belts are also available, as well as backpacks, computer bags, shaving kits and wallets, all with men in mind. While outstanding customer service can be found at all three locations, each store caters to its unique customer base. While the Fashion Mall store is hyper-focused

on handbags, the Clay Terrace and Hamilton Town Center locations are more family focused and a great destination for specialty gifts. Purse Strings is a great destination for graduation, anniversary or birthday gifts, and has many options for baby and wedding showers beyond necessities and registries. You will likely even find something special for yourself. For Paul and Heather, Purse Strings is a family affair, and several of their kids have worked at the store, both behind the counter and behind the scenes. They are gracious hosts of multiple philanthropic shopping events to raise money for local charities and, thanks to Heather’s youngest son who has special needs, they have become active supporters of Down Syndrome Indiana. When they aren’t obsessing over the latest trend in jewelry or handbags, you can find them out on their boat or playing with their tribe and three dogs for an evening outside by the fire pit. ummer is here, bursting with blue skies and fresh produce. It is the perfect season to stock up at the farmers market and fire up the grill, but after an unpredictable year full of do-it-yourself dinners, carryout and curbside pickup, many of us are ready for in-person dining once again. Luckily, our local restaurant selection does not disappoint, and here we invite you to try any and all of our favorite places to feast. Whether you are craving ice cream with the family, a spread of ethnic flavors, or a romantic night out—these locales have you covered. Maybe you are in the mood to cruise up the Monon and stop for lunch or a drink along the way—several of these spots check that box too. Many local establishments have risen to the occasion despite the challenges, just as any gracious host would, with innovative and exciting dining experiences. Now is our chance to support our community by supporting them. This summer, there is so much to savor.

VIVANTE

FRENCH EATERY With delicacies inspired by the coast and countryside of France, Vivante French Eatery will definitely impress.

I

nside the striking Georgian architecture of Hotel Carmichael, Carmel’s celebrated boutique hotel in City Center, you’ll find Vivante French Eatery. The warm and welcoming space offers diners a seasonal menu laden with approachable French fare. This summer, the carte du jour is focused on the cuisine of the French Riviera—fresh, bold flavors from the Mediterranean coast of France prepared in delightful ways with topnotch ingredients. Chef Joseph Hsu and his culinary team handcraft refined, yet unpretentious dishes such as Prawn au Pistou—Mediterranean grilled prawns in a pesto broth, and Poussin Basquaise—pan-roasted young chicken with sauce piperade and a sweet pea risotto, a chef favorite. The elite wine list and custom cocktail menu, along with the attentive service, add to the exceptional standard set at Vivante. With white marble tables, crisp linens and fresh cut flowers, Vivante doesn’t spare the details. Inside the light and airy space you’ll find cozy, horseshoe banquette seating and floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the manicured Monon Trail. Outside on the patio you can enjoy drinks and a snack, French press coffee for two and a pastry, or even a full service meal at one of the shaded tables or lounging couches to better soak in the scene. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with weekend brunch, Vivante French Eatery is a restaurant that needs to be at the top of your rotation this summer. Located inside Hotel Carmichael, you can find out more at vivantecarmel.com or follow @vivantecarmel on Instagram.

SUN KING BREWERY AND SPIRITS

Sip your way around town at the familyfriendly Sun King taprooms in Fishers District and Midtown Carmel.

S

ince 2009, Sun King has been making a name for itself in Indianapolis, reaching out with unique venues around the city, including two choice locations in Hamilton County. Last year, Sun King moved their Fishers Small-Batch Brewery into Fishers District off 116th Street and have found satisfaction serving guests pints from the 10-barrel onsite system, as well as all the well-loved beers from the downtown production facility, or even a cocktail made with Sun King spirits. The nearby Sun King Spirits Distillery can be found right off the Monon Trail in the heart of Midtown Carmel. Here an award-winning lineup of craft beer, handcrafted spirits, and yummy adult slushy drinks can be enjoyed on either of the two outdoor patios. While no Sun King experience is alike, each location highlights local chefs, and both the Carmel and Fishers locations feature a food hall concept with several dining options under the same roof. At Fishers District, guests can experience the culinary launch pad of the Fishers Test Kitchen—a new incubator concept that hopes to shape the culinary landscape of Fishers for the future— with three entrepreneurial chefs and food ranging from diner style burgers to Korean BBQ and ramen. Carmel’s culinary lineup includes Pi Pizza (wood fired pizza), La Margarita (tacos and nachos) and The Den By FoxGardin (classic American pub fare). There is nothing better than a cold beer on a hot summer night. Visit Sun King online at sunkingbrewing.com or follow @ sunkingbrewing on Instagram to find out more about their many beers, spirits and locations.

CONVIVIO ITALIAN ARTISAN CUISINE

The specialty menu at Convivio features fresh pasta made in-house each day and a love of Italian food, life and culture.

I

n Italian, convivio means “living together as a way of sharing an experience together.” Co-owners Andrea Melani and Emilio Cento strive to share an authentic and welcoming Italian experience with their guests at Convivio, with locations in Carmel and Zionsville. While the menu is centered around the many types of fresh pasta they hand make daily, it is inspired by a passion for authentic Italian recipes and techniques and is focused on quality. It includes a curated selection of antipasti appetizers, bruschetti and pizzas, along with featured dishes that change seasonally, highlighting the cuisine of a specific region in Italy. Currently, the flavors of Emilia-Romagna, located in northern Italy and famous for Parmigiano Reggiano, are in the spotlight. In addition to Old and New World wines, they offer a robust selection of Italian wines with an eye-catching menu—instead of listing wines by the varietal, the Italian wines are showcased on a map of the country and categorized regionally so guests can see where they originate. Melani, who grew up on the northwest coast of Italy, finds excitement in the traditional flavors and innovative options at Convivio, but believes there is something to be said for simplicity. One of his favorite dishes on the menu is the Caprese salad, made with heirloom tomatoes in a variety of colors. “Many Italian restaurants have a Caprese,” he says, “But ours is really special.” Enjoy true flavors of Italy under the pergola in Carmel or along the quaint brick streets of downtown Zionsville. GRINDSTONE ON THE MONON New American flavors, classy modernrustic digs, and endearing Midwest values meet along the Monon Trail in Westfield.

C

lancy’s, Inc. has been a cornerstone of the restaurant industry in central Indiana for decades, and Grindstone on the Monon, one of the recent family-run endeavors, stands firmly on that foundation. Pull up a seat on the Grindstone patio all summer long to enjoy your meal with a view of the Monon Trail or lounge around the outdoor fire pit and listen to live music every Thursday night in a location that is hard to match. Executive Chef Aaron Gregori has put together an outstanding summer menu with highlights including a goat cheese bruschetta, sticky beef short ribs, blackened Mahi Mahi, and a Cubano sandwich. Grindstone on the Monon uses fresh, local ingredients when possible, collaborating with local farms and producers such as Red Frazier Bison, Smoking Goose Meatery, and many breweries across the state. As their mission statement implies, Grindstone on the Monon is committed to sourcing high quality, local and sustainable ingredients. Blake Fogelsong, co-owner of Clancys, Inc. and third generation restaurateur, says they have gone even greener as of late by moving beyond only sustainable ingredients, but by utilizing eco friendly packaging and cups. As the Clancy brand continues to grow, be sure to keep your eye on Mass Ave downtown, where they plan to open the Fountain Room, a new supper club inspired restaurant in the Bottleworks District early next year. Walk, bike or drive into Grindstone on the Monon, located at 17470 Wheeler Road in Westfield. Visit grindstoneonthemonon. com or follow @grindstoneonthemonon on Instagram for more information.

A

meal at Verde Flavors of Mexico is a satisfying experience not just for your taste buds, but for all of your senses. The locally owned and family run restaurant, with three north side locations, offers an unrivaled menu full of traditional and daring Mexican recipes. With exotic seafood options such as ceviche, paella and pulpo (char-grilled octopus) to classics like elote y esquites—loaded (and local) street corn, Verde has something for everyone. This summer, they are excited to share several new additions including Rockefeller style oysters, chamorro and bone marrow, and a molcajete abundant with amazing flavor and eye-catching flare. Owner Paul Aréchiga recommends starting with the Margarita Trio, which presents Verde’s House Margarita, their premium Patrón Margarita, and the Texas Margarita (which he says comes with a delicious extra kick). He favors the outdoor dining, especially in the summertime, saying the patios are a central component of Verde’s concept. “We focus very much on our food and beverage recipes at Verde, but we also pay attention to other factors like the ambience. We do our best to make sure our patios carry the same character and personality our indoor dining rooms have,” says Aréchiga. After a troubled year in a roller-coaster industry, Verde is excited to be hosting more groups, family gatherings, and intimate meals once again, and is thankful for the loyal support of the community. DEBRAND FINE CHOCOLATES

The signature chocolate, freshly made ice cream and cold coffee drinks at DeBrand Fine Chocolates of Indianapolis is an elevated summer treat. Everything at DeBrand is a work of art—from the chic décor to the dramatic espresso drinks to the chocolates themselves. Handcrafted using only the finest, and often exotic ingredients, DeBrand Fine Chocolates is known around the world for a reason.

Iced Caramel Mocha

The sleek shop at River Crossing has all of DeBrand’s distinct chocolates on hand, but also offers the chocolatier’s specialty, made-from-scratch ice cream, making it the perfect spot for an indulgent summer treat. This isn’t your average freezer aisle ice cream. DeBrand’s is made in small batches at their Fort Wayne facility with a very low overrun (dairy-speak for low air content), resulting in an ultra dense, extra creamy ice cream. It is served several ways, from the traditional dipped scoop or cone—covered in a layer of DeBrand chocolate so thick you have to hammer through it with your spoon, to the Affogato—hot espresso poured over a creamy vanilla scoop, to the DeBrand Sundae—served in an edible chocolate dish and topped with your choice of specialty toppings and nuts. DeBrand also serves coffee drinks, and is happy to serve them over ice any time. The Iced Caramel Mocha with Sea Salt is a house favorite, with layers of dark chocolate, creamy caramel and fresh whipped cream. Coffee drinks are served with a complimentary chocolate garnish and ice cream always comes with flat or sparkling water. Home Work Brian McIntosh, Operations Manager at

Houseworks, a locally owned furniture store

specializing in home design, offers his insight on a well–thought–out home office. (promotional content)

W

hile many are preparing to return back to the office full time this summer, others are choosing to stay home and make a home office space that works for them. Investing in a comfortable and efficient home office environment will make your work life easier and more productive, and the trained design professionals at Houseworks can help create an efficient and beautiful home office by maximizing the space available, be it an entire dedicated room or just a portion of one.

ability to have the right height while sitting, and having your shoulders rest comfortably is a great thing,” McIntosh claims, adding that it takes a lot of the tension out of your neck and upper back. If your office will be a shared space, Houseworks has some lovely pieces of multitasking furniture from a slim console table that doubles as a small desk with a keyboard drawer, to a file cabinet masquerading as a credenza perfect for any living room or bedroom. Wherever your home office fits in, McIntosh suggests making the space your own with some personal touches such as artwork, funky accessories and family photos in unique frames. Even brightly colored desk light can showcase your personality. While comfort is key to any office, a home office can tend to get too casual, especially in a family home. “I think the key to a successful home office is putting away your the work at the end of the day,” says McIntosh. “Especially if it is not a room that is dedicated as a home office. That way your work day is over and you are not looking at work items when you are with your family.”

When thinking through your home office, McIntosh recommends starting with a comfortable, ergonomic chair. “If you are going to invest in upgrading your home office, do not skimp on the office chair. It should have multiple adjustments including seat depth and height,” he says. “It should also have adjustable arm height and the back of the chair should have adjustable lumbar support for your back.” Houseworks offers several options that integrate well into any environment. Proper task lighting is also important to consider. McIntosh prefers a dimmable light that is adjustable, so that you can angle it in different directions, and notes LED task lights can help prevent eye strain. A lifting desk can be a worthy splurge. Not only is it healthy to stand occasionally throughout the day, but having desk height options while seated is a great benefit. McIntosh notes that the average fixed desk height is about 30-inches high, but that doesn't necessarily work for all people, especially those on the shorter or taller ends of the chart. “Having the
