New Year, New You By Susan Salaz
Time marches on, and as 2021 comes to a close, consider setting some modern skincare goals for the coming year to turn back the clock on your complexion.

hen it comes to skincare, Cristina Wisemen, aesthetic nurse practitioner, chief injector and co-owner of The Beauty Lounge Salon and MedSpa in Carmel, believes winter is an ideal time to consider revitalization. With more than 22 years of nursing experience in emergency medicine, plastic surgery and aesthetics, Crissy is an industry expert in non-surgical aesthetic procedures and customized skin care. The state-of-the-art MedSpa at The Beauty Lounge offers everything from clinical facials to injectables, laser resurfacing and skin tightening treatments, but according to Crissy, it all starts with a regular routine. “Being consistent will change your skin for the better,” says Crissy. grade skincare products (The Beauty Lounge carries several lines) is recommended because they have the science and literature to back up results. “You can spend all the money in the world on treatments, but you will not maintain results with products purchased from the drug store,” she insists—and she recommends everyone incorporate a retinoid into their nightly regimen at the very least. When it comes to treatments, Crissy believes the innovative CoolPeel CO2 resurfacing technique is a great way to kick off the New Year. Not only does it remove damaged skin, revealing younger, healthier skin and restoring your youthful glow, but it requires very little, if any, downtime. For rejuvenation, Crissy recommends PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix) therapies, which use your own cells to heal the skin, aiding in collagen production and tightening the dermis as a result. “This treatment increases the integrity of the skin,” says Crissy, adding that it minimizes crepiness and scar tissue. says her favorite treatment right now pairs PRFM with radio frequency microneedling, which increases effectiveness, but PRP and PRFM can achieve noticeable results when injected individually or with filler.

Skincare doesn’t stop at the face, and The Beauty Lounge offers several treatments that can knock years off your body’s look. For loose skin, Hyperdilute Radiesse dermal filler is a game changer, encouraging the body to create its own elastin and collagen. Crissy often combines this treatment with PDO thread placement and radio frequency microneedling for the neck, but it can also be used in the buttocks, knees, elbows and hands. For cellulite, Qwo is the way to go. This revolutionary treatment is the first and only FDA-approved injectable that targets cellulite. Crissy is extremely excited about being able to offer Qwo to her clients, but says not to wait until January to schedule this treatment. “We are running a special on Qwo for the rest of 2021, and we are witnessing excellent results.” Visit beautyloungecarmel.com to schedule a consultation or book an appointment online. Family Man By Susan Salaz
Quinn Shepherd Photography By Gabrielle Cheikh Noel | Artwork By Eduardo Peña
Family means everything to Quinn Shepherd, CEO and Managing Partner of Shepherd Insurance. The idea extends well beyond his household, deeply rooted in the culture he has created in the growing company.
A
s the forest behind their Colonial farmhouse gradually fades from the autumnal hues of last season, and the surrounding hay fields awaken with a fragile layer of frost each morning, the Shepherd family is busy inside, readying their home for the holidays. Amid the constant hustle of life with four active children, Quinn Shepherd says his favorite place to be is at home with his wife Ali and their family. “It’s my peaceful place,” shares the friendly and humble CEO of Shepherd Insurance, headquartered nearby in Carmel, Indiana. Quinn Shepherd might be the youngest CEO among the top insurance agencies in the country. And while he isn’t sure of this fact, he is sure that his age offers him some balance in the industry, allowing him to learn from the wisdom of those that came before him while giving him the opportunity to empower a new generation of leadership. He understands the world (including his chosen field of risk management) is ever changing, and that it takes a blend of care and compassion, along with a lot of listening, to capture the orchestra of the modern insurance industry and keep it in tune. It is this sweet, nuanced song that enables Quinn to live up to his name, leading the more than 30 Shepherd Insurance offices across six states, including Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Florida and Arizona, through a combination of collaboration and trust. “It is a family,” he says of his team. (promotional content)
ABSOLUTELIVING
To Quinn Shepherd, one of the most important aspects of his job is personally connecting with the staff. Daily Zoom calls, dubbed Coffee with Quinn, were born out of the unique challenges brought on by the pandemic in an effort to make sure everyone at Shepherd Insurance felt loved, safe, and heard. Although he is once again traveling to the offices (a challenge in itself, with more than 30 offices), the calls are an impactful part of the week and still continue.
“We support one another and genuinely want each other to grow and succeed.” In a small garage office more than 40 years ago, Quinn’s father and grandfather began selling life insurance. They had zero established clients, but the well-known basketball player and coach called on family and friends in the local community. What started with life insurance quickly expanded to auto, home, business and health insurance. Today, the scope of offerings at Shepherd Insurance also includes Medicare, 401(K) retirement plan services, and wealth management with a specialization in high net worth clients. “What makes us different is that we don’t just fit you into an insurance plan that is dictated to us by a corporate home office,” Quinn explains. “Our team of licensed professionals works with over 200 insurance carriers to ‘market’ your insurance coverage and find the coverage that best fits your needs and your budget.” Today, the family-operated business, headquartered in Carmel, Indiana, has over 60,000 customers it thinks of as family. Quinn attributes that to the unwavering model that hasn’t changed since the company’s inception in 1977: build relationships, set goals, generate fresh ideas, collaborate and win. “To be successful here, you must have a great attitude and treat everyone by the Golden Rule—treat people the way you would like to be treated,” he emphasizes. Quinn has been involved with the business since he can remember, and he even cut the grass as part of his duties at one point. Now, he welcomes the chance to work with more than 400 employees—driving growth, innovation and change. Quinn’s father, Dave (who Quinn describes as encouraging, supportive, and the most generous person he’s ever been around) now serves as chairman and leader of Shepherd’s merger and acquisition group. Dave finds comfort knowing that the family legacy will remain with Quinn. “He was never given anything other than an opportunity, and he took it and ran,” says his father, proudly. “He was made to be a CEO of a company. He leads and sees things others can’t.”
In addition to unofficial landscaper and Chief Executive Officer, Quinn has also served as the Chief Marketing Officer and is the visionary of Operation Shepherding, the company’s community service initiative. “My title might be CEO, but my passion is CSO: Chief Servant Officer,” he says with a smile. Quinn is not shy to talk about his Christian faith—he studied seminary at Grace College, served for two years as a lay pastor at CrossRoads Church at Westfield, and founded Wisdom & Grace Ministries, which sponsors students and is currently building a school in Guatemala. But Quinn says Shepherd Insurance is for everyone, and the company comprises various beliefs and ideologies. Giving back has been a common theme among Shepherd Insurance offices since the beginning. Today, they serve over 40 organizations (individually selected by each office), and employees are given several days to use for community service each year. “Operation Shepherding unites us…and allows us to experience acceptance, respect, grace, love and mercy in the workplace,” he says. Back at the farm, as Quinn affectionately calls it (he is admittedly not a farmer, but does enjoy the scenery), the Shepherds are excited to share the joy of another sacred season, and are counting down the days until their annual Christmas Eve karaoke night, a family tradition. The home is surprisingly peaceful—not because it is quiet or dull, not for a minute, but because it is full of love. “We love radically, and there is no doubt we have been blessed,” a spirited Quinn says with pride. “We believe that the more we are given, the more responsibility we have to share those gifts by serving others.” He and Ali will continue to give and to serve others, and they are teaching their children to do the same, because as Quinn says, “The more we give, the more we are able to change the world.” Find out more about Shepherd Insurance and what they offer at shepherdins.com and by following @shepherd_insurance on Instagram.

Quinn Shepherd, CEO of Shepherd Insurance, is passionate about company culture, community service, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and family. He could brag forever on his wife Ali, his constant cheerleader and steadfast companion on life’s journey. “She makes life better for everyone around her,” he says, and remains amazed at all that she does to manage their family and household, while finding joy in every moment. They enjoy watching movies together, traveling, and being entertained by their four children. “Our twins, Eli and Ethan, are soon to be 13 and are active in sports. We also have Georgia (9) and Hunter (5) who equally keep us on our toes,” he says.

hoosing a medical provider can be overwhelming, but finding the right fit for high quality, personalized care is of the utmost importance. As the New Year approaches and making resolutions draws our attention to creative ways to live a healthy lifestyle, consider checking in with some of the area’s best specialists in order to maintain your mental and physical well-being in 2022. Here we give an in-depth diagnosis of these local leaders in the medical field that go beyond routine care, from those focused on fertility and otolaryngology, to those concentrating on orthodontics and cosmetic surgery. When asked what keeps them passionate in their chosen field, the common theme among each of these Board Certified professionals was you—their patients. We are lucky to live in a place where you don’t have to go far to find the best. But you do have to be willing to love yourself enough to take the first steps toward a healthier—and happier—year ahead. (promotional content)

“My passion for otolaryngology and surgery was realized early in medical training when I fell in love with the ability to operate and have a ‘hands-on’ role in my patients’ healing.” Fueled by a fascination with physiology and wellness, Dr. Nicole Klein’s devotion to the practice of medicine and surgery is rooted in improving the lives of her patients. “I love the art of taking care of my patients, making them feel better, and helping them on their journey to wellness,” she says, acknowledging the rhythmic interplay between skill, artistry and technology. A partner at Otolaryngology Associates and OA Facial Plastics, with offices in Indianapolis, Carmel and Noblesville, she specializes in general ENT, reconstructive surgeries, and minimally invasive facial esthetic procedures and treatments.
Nicole Klein, MD Board Certified Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck Surgeon Otolaryngology Associates and OA Facial Plastics 11725 Illinois Street, Suites 449 and 445 Carmel, IN 46032
After receiving an undergraduate degree and doctorate from Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Klein stayed to complete her surgical residency with the Department of Otolaryngology. “I have dedicated my entire career to the study and practice of surgery exclusively involving the head and neck,” Dr. Klein explains. As a General Otolaryngologist, her practice spans all age groups including pediatric, adolescent and adult patient populations. “I enjoy restorative procedures, both functional to treat problems related to nasal/sinus concerns, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, sleep disorders, disorders of ears and hearing, as well as esthetic and cosmetic restorative procedures for trauma, reconstruction, and to combat aging,” she shares. Outside of her practice, Dr. Klein enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband Rob (founder of Conceptual Kitchens & Millwork) and three children. “The field [of fertility] combines my love of science and cutting-edge technology with surgery and a lot of counseling and compassion.” With a passion for learning and a desire to help people that was born in her at an early age, Dr. Meredith Provost describes herself as a “late bloomer” to medicine. The Division 1 athlete attended North Carolina State on a volleyball scholarship—graduating at the top of her class in Biochemistry. She deferred an acceptance to medical school in order to attend the University of Cambridge in England, where she ended up staying almost five years, completing a Ph.D. in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine. Later, as a first-year medical student, Dr. Provost found herself in a fertility office during a rotation, and felt an immediate calling. “I was laser focused on helping patients with infertility from that day on,” she remembers. She finished medical school, completed a four-year residency and three years of fellowship, and now practices on her own at Indiana Fertility Institute in Carmel, Indiana.

Like anything in life, fertility treatment isn't linear, she explains. Every patient is unique, and there are steps forward and backward, and some days can be really hard. “I view my role as a guide, and I need to listen first in order to help [my patients] achieve their personal goals,” she says. Dr. Provost is fortunate to be able to experience parenthood and knows how important it is to her patients. She's raising two children with her husband Adam, and when she’s not in the office or the OR, she is usually with them on the soccer field or basketball court. Keep up with Dr. Provost by following @ indianafertilityinstitute and @prelude_ fertility on Instagram and Indiana Fertility Institute on Facebook.
“My patients motivate me to always continue learning the newest technologies and advancements in orthodontics in order to create the best experience possible.” As an adolescent, Dr. Tara Emerick’s own orthodontic treatment made a drastic impact on her self-esteem, and became a career catalyst. “Ever since, I’ve always known that I wanted to go into dentistry, specifically orthodontics, so that I could help others the way that [my orthodontist] helped me,” she says. After graduating from Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis and completing a three-year orthodontics residency in Chicago, Dr. Emerick now lives in the Village of West Clay with her husband Jon, their three small children, and the family dog Lulu, where she opened her own boutique orthodontic practice, Emerick Orthodontics, earlier this year. “When I evaluate a patient, I’m not only looking at the teeth,” says Dr. Emerick, explaining that she also examines the jaws, bite, sinuses, growth pattern and more. This comprehensive approach helps her to make informed decisions and create individually tailored plans specific to each patient’s needs and desires. She is grateful to help her patients love their smiles, with treatment options including Invisalign, InBrace, clear or metal braces and teeth whitening services. “Orthodontic treatment is good for mental health by increasing the patient’s self-esteem,” she says, adding that straighter teeth are also healthier teeth because they make proper oral hygiene easier to accomplish. This leads to better prevention of gingivitis and periodontitis, which studies have linked to numerous systemic health issues such as diabetes, heart and kidney disease, dementia, osteoporosis, asthma and cancer. Dr. Emerick strives to make orthodontic treatments as convenient and comfortable as possible for all of her patients.

“The search for better and better results keeps me passionate, and I strive to give patients the results that they want.” A native of Fishers, Indiana, Dr. Chris Lowery graduated from Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and then trained in general surgery at Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. He spent five years working as an attending general surgeon before completing the Cosmetic Surgery fellowship under the guidance of acclaimed cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Robert Jackson. Today, the two work alongside one another at Hamilton Surgical Arts, where their unmatched dedication is apparent not only in their high standards and impeccable results, but also in their accomplishments in the field of cosmetic surgery.
Chris Lowery, DO Board Certified General Body Cosmetic Surgeon Hamilton Surgical Arts 9660 East 146th Street, Suite 100 Noblesville, IN 46060
Dr. Lowery believes that a healthy body image is part of a healthy lifestyle, and hopes his work can positively impact his patients. He says, “Sometimes patients need reassurance about a certain characteristic, and that may include treatment or maybe just reinforcement that existing characteristics are very pleasing as they are.” Specializing in general cosmetic surgery, his work includes face and body procedures as well as wound care. “I really enjoy the artistry of cosmetic surgery,” he says, including that he stays abreast of the latest technology so that he can offer his patients the best care with minimal downtime. The field of cosmetic surgery is rapidly changing, and cutting-edge technology and techniques that will allow for better results through less invasive procedures are on the horizon, he shares. Dr. Lowery still calls Fishers home—he lives there with his wife, who is a nephrologist. “She makes me look like a slacker,” he laughs, adding that he has four daughters and six grandchildren. “I appreciate the artistic side of cosmetic surgery, and especially the doctorpatient relationships—cosmetic surgery is one of the last bastions of a true doctor-patient relationship.” As an innovative leader in the cosmetic surgery field, Dr. Robert Jackson has dedicated his career to providing surgical excellence and high-quality care to his patients. A true artist with expertise in all aspects of cosmetic surgery, Dr. Jackson says he enjoys body contouring because it is one of the areas where he can apply his talents as a sculptor. “Breast surgery is something I have been doing for over 35 years,” he says. “It is very rewarding to help a woman get the look they want.” He points out that the way we perceive ourselves on the outside can affect our inner psyche. “Cosmetic surgery can help people with positive body perception,” says Dr. Jackson.

Dr. Jackson is actively involved in the cosmetic surgery community and has held many leadership roles over the years. He remains committed to continuing education, always learning new techniques that will benefit his patients. He has traveled the world lecturing and teaching, and he has helped to train 19 fellows in the field, which he says is one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. Earlier this year, Dr. Jackson published a book, Bob, You Can’t Do That, about his life experiences, including a tour of duty in Vietnam as an Army surgeon, surgical mission trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and his career as a cosmetic surgeon. “It took a lifetime to live and 2 ½ years to write,” he says. When he can get away, Dr. Jackson enjoys spending time at his lake cottage with his wife and dog. Holistic Home

In 2022, seek out design that’s born naturally. With a renewed focus in the field on sustainability and natural materials, you can expect home interior trends to be naturally refreshing in the coming year. The professionals at the Indiana Design Center are here with holistic design ideas to bring nature-inspired elements to your environment for ultimate luxury that you can enjoy all year long. Of the many ways to add an essence of nature to your space, the addition of plants and fresh flowers might be the easiest way to start. “Bringing the outdoors in not only brings life to the indoors, but also brings health benefits to the air within your home,” says Stacy Molander, owner and lead designer at Rusted Window (rustedwindow.com) flower market and boutique. She says adding live plants can fit into any style, as containers vary from ceramic pots to woven baskets and beyond. “On a smaller scale, you can rotate in different fresh flowers for pops of color and scents throughout the year.” Biophilic design takes houseplants to the extreme by playing on our human desire to connect more closely with nature. The living walls, moss art and green panels found at Great Growin’s (greatgrowins.com) supply an innovative and energizing addition to any interior, not only cleaning our air, but adding an artistic touch. “As we increasingly spend more time inside, it is essential to our well-being that we incorporate nature into the spaces where we work, heal, play, study and live,” Stephanie Miller, owner of Great Growin’s, believes. The options are limitless, she says, adding that they work with clients and designers one-on-one to come up with a plantscape that fits their space, budget and vision.

Large-scale windows are a great way to enjoy a natural view without leaving the house. “We are seeing a movement towards floor to ceiling glass,” says Cori Brown, CEO of the Glass House Gallery (theglasshousegallery.com), “so you feel as if the outdoor landscape is part of the home.” She notes the resurgence of skylights, along with a contemporary, oversized adaptation of the garden window: Skycove from

With windows come window treatments, and Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street (draperystreet.com) says it’s an exciting time to be in the industry. “We are seeing the ability to achieve design aesthetics with state-of-the-art technology,” says Caryn, adding that Provenance Woven Wood Shades by Hunter Douglas, crafted from natural woods, reeds, bamboo and grasses, are among her favorites right now. These add an organic style to any room and filter sunlight beautifully. Even kitchens are heading in a greener direction, and not just with color—although green cabinetry is still trending. The desire to go green is affecting design, and the professionals at Conceptual Kitchens & Millwork (conceptualkitchens.com) are accommodating this shift in the kitchens
they create. “The farm-to-table movement has taken a stronghold, and will most definitely continue to grow as a method to prepare meals and keep folks healthy,” says Amy Kreutz, partner and senior designer at CK&M, noting that space and appliance selection now cater to this trend to help prepare and preserve fresh food and reduce waste. With more than 15 showrooms and endless resources, design comes naturally at the Indiana Design Center.
