bebaleq (small shelter, hut) a small building, commonly found in the middle of a rice field, that serves as an enclosure or as a place to rest, not for living

bebaleq pentelahan an attempt to adopt the function of bebaleq, a shelter to rest oneself underneath during the break in the rice field, into today’s mobility of the people.

ITDC, a state-owned enterprise focusing on tourism area development, is managing The Mandalika, a branding of Mandalika Special Economic Zone (KEK), Lombok, Indonesia.
The site for rest area is located on Jalan Sengkol, Mandalika. It is a connecting road that runs along the southern coast of Lombok Island.
The island is currently undergoing developments on its preparation to host Moto GP 2021. Various supporting facilities have been planned, including rest area.
BEBALEQ PENTELAHAN
Initial massing is based on two basic functions accommodated in the rest area: petrol station and food court. Two masses placed facing the road, thus making it north-south oriented.

Each of the two building mass is assigned with different characters: static for petrol station mass, and a more dynamic one for restaurants (and mushola). The mass for mushola is then adjusted towards qibla.
The enclosing elements adopt one of traditional Sasak roof, berugaq sekepat. An inversion to the form then results a mushroom-shaped enclosure. The variation of roof heights enables a natural lighting for the inner part of the building.
A layer of secondary skin made up of rosters is added to the building faรงade, to filter the light from its sides while still enabling the air to circulate well.
The static character and shorter-wider proportion of petrol station mass allows the other masses that serve as the core function of the rest area (as a place for people to rest) to stand out.

A Future Self-Sustaining City
The ideology of Pancasila (Five Principles) is implemented in the design of Indonesia’s new capital city, mainly in the main areas of KIPP. The inner circle each represents first, second, third, and fourth principle, respectively, while the fifth principle is implemented by equal distribution of city infrastructures & facilities, inclusivity, and ease of access for everyone.
Education and industrial industry will be the major supporting sectors in the new capital city. The synergy of both sectors will generate an ecosystem of intellectuals, a key factor that may lead to positive impact from the contribution of the city’s society, thus creating an independent city and later will lead to a self-sustaining city.

The existing mangrove forest along the riverbanks will be preserved, and will form a continuous green area with the city forest park (Taman Hutan Raya) and botanical garden that passes through the city. A preserved riverbank will prevent narrowing of the river (a common problem in rivers that pass through big cities as the settlement area grows into sprawls) and may result in a good impact to the river ecosystem.
MRT Lines There will be at least 3 MRT lines to accommodate 3 main areas, and LRT lines to connect between districts.
Smart City: Synergy Between Research, Education, and Industrial Area KIPP area will be surrounded by education centers and national research institutes. A synergy between education and industrial sector will build an ecosystem of innovative and productive intellectuals. Industrial area will be placed along the existing Trans Kalimantan road, next to the planned local and international port on the southern side of KIPP.
Typical District Road infrastructure in K-IKN consists of primary arterial road (ROW 150), secondary arterial road (ROW 100), collector road (ROW 60), and local road (ROW 30). Wider roads may serve as the connector between districts, while smaller roads connect buildings within the district, creating an environment that is friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. Apartment buildings and mixed-uses dominate the residential areas, enabling a more distributed function within the city, so people don’t need to travel a long distance to shop or work.

Development Phase
Central government activities that serve as the core function of the capital is the first to move in, starting as early as 2023 or 2024.
Education facilities soon follows, with the opening of universities, that will be expected to attract students from other cities and help generate commercial activities.

As soon as the total population reach 1 million, the capital is expected to become an independent city, and no longer depends on nearby cities (Balikpapan and Samarinda).
KIPP will be placed on the west side of the delineation, considering the efficiency of land acquisitions, proximity to port, and to avoid building in protected forest area.
To accommodate President’s vision and mission regarding the country’s human resource development, the education area will be close to KIPP and national research institutes.
The location also refers to studies that have been conducted.
Industry area will be placed along the existing Trans Kalimantan line, close to the planned local and international port on the south side of KIPP.
Residential area will take place between 3 focal point of the city development (KIPP, Industry area, Military area). Each 1 ha of construction in the city will be compensated with 2 ha of greeneries, an attempt to not just retaining the current forest area, but expanding it.
The expansion of KIPP will be directed towards the east of the delineation area, because of its proximity to the planned toll road, existing transmigration residentials, and supporting terrain. The expansion is to accommodate an additional 1.4 million population.

The city currently has over 115 education institutions, from middle school to universities.
A new dedicated library building is needed, as the current city library occupies only the ground floor and the first floor of a building shared with the city’s Park and Cemetery Department.
The selected site is close to the city center, being only within 1 km away from the city hall and the city square, in a district with many schools and other education institutions.

Site is located on Jalan Veteran, east of the intersection between Jalan Veteran, Jalan Tamblong, Jalan Lembong, and Jalan Sumatera; west of Jalan Van Deventer
Building’s basic rectangular shape is configurated according to main axis of Jalan Veteran.
One of the rectangular building’s edges is rounded, responding to the node nearby (Patung Sepakbola on the intersection).
The top half of the rounded corner is subtracted, creating an open space on the 3rd floor.

PLESIR HOTEL
The site is located at Cihampelas, one of Bandung’s well known shopping districts among both local and foreign tourists. The area is now constantly busy with commercial activities, mainly related to fashion and food.
Located just next to Cihampelas Walk, the site has a good potential of attracting guests, as it is the busiest section of Jalan Cihampelas. This section of Jalan Cihampelas is a one way street with traffic going from north to south.
The idea is to create a hotel with shopping-related retail space in order to appeal to more visitors, alongside MICE and family-related facilities.

The building masses consist of a podium and a tower. The podium shape follows boundaries of the site which form like an irregular trapezoid.
The tower is placed with parallel orientation to the axis of Jalan Pelesiran south of site, aiming to create a welcoming impression to the visitors, who are most likely to come from the north of Jalan Cihampelas, where the traffic is one way southward.
The tower is then split to create an impression of a slim and dynamic tower.

Kota Baru Parahyangan is a new town-scale development area in Padalarang, West Bandung Regency. The township is planned to be an independent region around Greater Bandung Metropolitan Area. According to KBP’s mission to develop globally competent human resources by providing town facilities with international scale and standards;
The site is located at Jalan Bujanggamanik, near the main access road, Jalan Parahyangan Raya that connects all parts of Kota Baru Parahyangan. Jalan Bujanggamanik is a one-way road, so the site is only accessible by vehicle through the south.

cakrawala, or horizon, is an imaginary line drawn between the earth and the sky, where the sun rises and sets
the sun symbolizes the theatre performances, while the horizon symbolize the stage.
CAKRAWALA PERFORMING ARTS THEATER
The basic shape is arc, depicting a sun getting close to the horizon.
The arc is split into two and then adjusted in size, corresponding to each function. The smaller front part is for the receiving area, and the other is for the theatre.
The parts of the split arc are inclined towards opposite directions, responding to the eastwest orientation of the building.
Additional mass (for the backstage area) is created in the back, behind the theatre mass.

The Arc Structure To create the arc-shaped upper element of the building, a superstructure made of space truss is used. The structure enables an axial load distribution, as it runs through the arc-shaped space truss to the ground.

CIKUDAPATEUH TRANS SPACE
Introduction
Cikudapateuh Trans Space is a transit oriented development (TOD) masterplan based on an existing train station, Stasiun Cikudapateuh (Cikudapateuh Station), currently a local station serving short distance trains.
The delineation of planning area covers approximately 65.000 m2, mostly on the north side of Cikudapateuh Station.

LAND USE Current land use is dominated by high density residentials and commercial area. Rapid growth of settlements results in the existence of slums around the railway. Future development for this area according to the city’s guideline is still mostly for commercial use.
BUILDING MASS AND FORM
ACTIVITY SUPPORT
The buildings in the area have similar height and width, creating a quite plain visual impression.
Most activities in the area are related to either commerce, nearby settlements, or transit.

OPEN SPACE The existing open space is mostly comprised of those formed by building setbacks. Medium sized trees are spread along the streets.
PEDESTRIAN WAYS Pedestrian ways are currently available along Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani only, while around Cikudapateuh Station no dedicated pedestrian way can be found, creating a traffic problem each time the station gets busy.
CIRCULATION AND PARKING Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani is the main circulation, classified as secondary collector road. On-street parking system is available along Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani and around Segitiga Mas shopping complex. Off-street parking areas are available on Kosambi market, Segitiga Mas, and Jaya Plaza.
SIGNAGE Most signages found in the area are for commercial purpose. Current signage placement is not organized and often blocks each other.
PRESERVATION A former paper factory building not far from Jaya Plaza is to be preserved as a public sport facility, according to RDTR 2015-2035.

Parking is available underground, resulting more space on the ground for pedestrians.
A continuous pedestrian circulation is provided throughout the area, as pedestrian is the main user of a transit oriented development area. Pedestrian paths and vehicle lanes are separated by a green space for trees and plants, allowing both pedestrian ways and roads to be shaded by tree canopies.
The tower masses are placed facing each other in the middle, with two large plazas in each side of the road. Residential buildings are developed vertically. The plaza magnifies the towers’ grand scale (including the office tower and hotel tower).
A preservation building is used as one of the entrance to sports center from Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani.

REORIENTING URBAN GROWTH - LOGO
Festival Arsitektur Parahyangan is an annual event held by Himpunan Mahasiswa Program Studi Arsitektur (HMPSArs), architecture student board of Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung. The event focuses on architecture-related issues and proposes idea for the city, presented in ways that appeal to general public so that It can raise public awareness.
The idea for Festival Arsitektur Parahyangan 2016: Compact Cities is based on the event’s tagline, “reorienting urban growth” and the emphasizing of compactness as its main goal for the city. Hence, the three components of the logo design each represents the phenomenon of urban sprawl which causes density and less public space; the idea of reorienting urban growth; and the goal of having a compact city.
