Are you ready to be part of something extraordinary? LibertyFest 2026 is just around the corner, and we're calling on enthusiastic volunteers to join us in celebrating Independence Day with a bang! These events are a beloved tradition in our community, and we need your help to make it the best one yet. We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join us in creating memorable and joyous occasions for all.
Volunteer Roles Needed:
Concert in the Park:
Support performers with logistics and equipment. Provide information and assistance to attendees.
Rodeo:
Help with event setup and participant coordination.
Ensure safety and smooth operation during the rodeo.
Car Show & Park Fest:
Assist with car show registration and parking. Help manage festival activities and vendor support.
Liberty Sprint:
Coordinate race day logistics and runner registration. Provide water and support at checkpoints along the route.
Big Band Show at Edmond History Museum:
Greet and direct visitors at the museum.
Assist with exhibit setup and event activities.
4th of July Parade:
Help organize parade participants and route management.
Ensure the safety and enjoyment of parade spectators.
Board Member:
Contribute to the planning and success of one of the nation’s premier Independence Day festivals. Support key areas such as financial oversight, marketing strategy, and overall nonprofit governance for a 501(c)(3) organization.

On behalf of our LibertyFest volunteers, we welcome you to this year’s celebration – a time defined by the milestones of our nation’s history and our community’s enduring patriotism. This year marks the 250th anniversary of our great nation, as well as the centennial of the Mother Road. Our theme for this year, “From 1776 to Route 66: The Freedom of America Rolls On,” embodies how our liberties endure through every generation, provided we work to preserve them.
George Washington challenged citizens to embrace “civic virtue.” While this concept is perhaps less frequently discussed today, it remains more important than ever. True freedom is not the absence of obligation; rather, it is the voluntary acceptance of a duty to one’s neighbor. This principle forms the heartbeat of the Declaration of Independence's closing words, where Thomas Jefferson wrote of a mutual pledge to each other of their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
I ask you: what is your civic virtue? For 54 years, LibertyFest volunteers have answered that question through service. We look forward to seeing you at our family-fun events this year; we invite you to volunteer today and play your part in helping the freedom of America roll on.

After 10 years, I am proud to welcome the Edmond LibertyFest fireworks show back to the University of Central Oklahoma campus! This beloved community tradition is the perfect example of a civic-university partnership, as the university, City of Edmond and LibertyFest come together to celebrate the 250th birthday of our great nation. The fireworks show joins another longstanding LibertyFest event, the Concert in the Park on the Mitchell Hall Theater lawn, featuring the UCO Summer Band.
For more than 130 years, UCO has supported Oklahoma and the nation by providing an accessible, relevant and affordable college education. Today, UCO is the third largest university in the state and Oklahoma’s only state-appropriated metropolitan university, affirming our commitment to meeting students where they are and preparing them for where they are going.
When UCO thrives, so does Edmond. I invite you to campus for one of our outstanding stage performances, concerts and exhibits. I encourage you to cheer on the Bronchos as our many nationally ranked teams demonstrate excellence on and off the field, court and course. And if you find yourself seeking an educational experience that meets you where you are, I invite you to join the Broncho community as a student.

Our Edmond community is thrilled to host the biggest and best 4th of July festival here in Edmond, Oklahoma. It is the 54th Anniversary of LibertyFest. It is an honor that Edmond Life & Leisure has once again been selected to produce this official program for LibertyFest. We look forward to seeing you at all the magnificent events for this fantastic year of celebration.
As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, this year’s LibertyFest is a meaningful reminder of the values that bring us together—freedom, gratitude, service, and community. For generations, LibertyFest has been a special part of Edmond’s story, where neighbors gather, families make memories, and volunteers generously give their time to create something truly memorable. As we celebrate our nation’s birthday, we also celebrate the people of Edmond whose spirit, kindness, and pride in community make this tradition so special.
As Route 66 approaches its 100th anniversary, we celebrate more than a highway. We celebrate the memories, communities, and spirit that have traveled along it for generations. Known as the Mother Road, Route 66 connects neighbors, welcomed travelers, and helped shape the story of Oklahoma and towns across America. Here in Edmond and throughout our state, its centennial is a warm reminder of the pride we share in our local heritage, the friendships built along the way, and the enduring sense of adventure and community that still brings people together today.
One of the highlights of LibertyFest is the annual parade, which features colorful floats, marching bands, and a display of local talent. The parade is a vibrant showcase of Edmond's community spirit, drawing thousands of spectators who line the streets to watch the procession. The most popular event is the fireworks display, which lights up the night sky with a dazzling array of colors and patterns, providing a fitting finale to the festivities. After several years, the LibertyFest fireworks proudly return to the University of Central Oklahoma campus.
We also owe a giant thank you to all our sponsors for this year’s event. Most have been supporting LibertyFest for decades. They make it possible for most events to occur without charge to our guests for these many events. LibertyFest, for those of you new to the community, is not a one-day event but it happens over 10 days with a multitude of events. A special new group of volunteers has stepped up to help keep the tradition alive and we hope you will consider being a volunteer for next year.

The Summer Band is a joint project of LibertyFest and the UCO School of Music to provide a quality band experience for area high school, college, and community members. The weekly rehearsals of this volunteer group provide a musical outlet for band members during the summer. Rehearsals culminate with a public performance of patriotic selections, marches, and popular medleys in the style of an old-fashioned concert in the park.

During the show, attendees will be transported back to the World War II era when well-known entertainers cheered up American troops through comedy skits, beloved music and patriotism.
The show features live musicians and actors reading Old Time Radio-style scripts incorporating Edmond’s wartime history from the 1940s, with special emphasis on Route 66 this year. Big band music is performed by Talk of the Town Orchestra and the emcee is local banjo player, Lucas Ross, plus Barrett Huddleston, Nora Sea and Lexi Windsor.
During the war era, the entire country needed a boost of positivity, and the need for positive entertainment continues. To appreciate America’s protectors, free show tickets are available to active military members and veterans.
Songs & Stripes, an official LibertyFest event, is part of the museum’s 1940s Radio Theater, a national award-winning series hosted by the Edmond History Museum. The show is performed live at the Edmond History Museum, 431 S. Boulevard in Edmond.

Parade Route:
The parade is scheduled for July 4th at 9 am. Every year on the day of the parade there is no parking on Broadway from 2nd street to Ayers. The cross streets are no parking back to the alley for Broadway. We will be doing security
sweeps of the parade route before the parade. Any vehicle parked in the above mentioned area after 7:00 am will be impounded.
The Edmond Police department would ask that you inform all your employees and patrons of this fact.
We hope to have a fun and enjoyable parade and do not want to inconvenience anyone. However, due to the number of people attending this large function certain security measures are necessary. LibertyFest is honored to have Jim Ross and Shellee Graham as the 2026 LibertyFest Grand Marshals, honoring the couple’s decades of work preserving and promoting Route 66 while embracing this year’s theme, “From 1776 to Route 66: The Freedom of America Rolls On.”
The husband-and-wife team, who live along Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma, have spent years documenting, preserving, and promoting the historic roadway known worldwide as the Mother Road.
Route 66 historian Jim Ross has spent 35 years researching, photographing, and writing about the highway’s rich history. He has authored multiple books, including Route 66 Crossings and Route 66 Sightings, and coauthored Route 66: The First 100 Years with Graham. Beyond writing, Ross regularly serves as a consultant and preservation advocate, earning numerous awards for his efforts to protect Route 66’s legacy.
Photographer, artist, and Route 66 ambassador Shellee Graham discovered the route in 1990 while living in St. Louis and has since become one of its leading visual storytellers. She has authored or coauthored five books, including Tales from the Coral Court and Secret Route 66. Her photography has appeared in national and international exhibitions, and her preservation work has earned multiple honors.
Together, Ross and Graham’s latest work, Route 66: The First 100 Years, chronicles the birth, rise, decline, and revival of the legendary highway during its first century. Released in May 2025, the book was recognized by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the year’s 10 best travel books. In May 2026, it earned both a Gold Medal for Best Coffee Table Book from the Independent Book Publishers Association and an Oklahoma Book Award for Design, Illustration, and Photography.

On behalf of the City of Edmond, it is my honor to welcome you to the 54th Annual LibertyFest Celebration!
This year, we celebrate an extraordinary milestone as our nation marks its 250th anniversary and Route 66 turns 100. Our theme, "From 1776 to Route 66: The Freedom of America Rolls On," captures the spirit of a country built on freedom and the enduring journey that continues to shape who we are today.
LibertyFest is a time when our community comes together to celebrate these shared ideals. From the parade and fireworks to concerts, car shows, and familyfriendly events, each tradition reflects the pride, unity, and energy that make Edmond such a special place to call home.
Route 66 holds a special place in Oklahoma's story, symbolizing opportunity, movement, and connection. This historic road mirrors the American spirit we honor during Independence Day.

While every veteran carries a unique story of service, sacrifice, and dedication to our country, this award allows us to shine a welldeserved spotlight on an exceptional individual. This honor is dedicated to a veteran who truly embodies the timeless spirit of America, someone who has not only defended our liberties abroad but has also demonstrated an outstanding, lifelong commitment to civic duty and leadership right here at home. Beyond their own uniform and service, they continue to secure the future of our nation by serving as a dedicated mentor, inspiring and guiding the next generation of leaders to carry the torch of liberty forward. May we never forget that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
From Korea to LibertyFest: Buford Ford’s Lifetime of Service Continues
For more than 30 years, anyone attending LibertyFest may have been greeted with a smile and handshake from Buford Ford, but his service to Oklahoma and the United States extends far beyond the festival. And at 94, he has no plans of stopping. Ford was born at Deaconess Hospital on December 21, 1931, only a few years after the start of the Great Depression and at the cusp of the Oklahoma Dust Bowl. He was adopted just five days after birth and would not know his biological family until his time in the military.
After growing up around Guthrie and experiencing World War II as a teenager, Ford joined the Oklahoma National Guard at just 18 years old. It was only a short time before his unit was activated and sent to Camp Polk in Louisiana.
After arriving at Camp Polk, President Harry S. Truman federalized the Oklahoma 45th Infantry Division in August 1950, transitioning the division from a National Guard unit into active-duty Army service.
“I knew I was going to Korea. We all knew that,” Ford said, and shortly afterward he was sent to Japan before deployment.
Before leaving Camp Polk, however, Ford learned he had a biological sister he had never met. After sending a letter to his family, he discovered that she was in Springfield, Missouri. He was granted leave to meet them. When he arrived, his biological mother and sister, along with a half-brother and half-sister, were there to greet him.
“Everything worked out really good. We had a wonderful relationship after that,” Ford said, who is now
the last living person in his generation.
Ford arrived in Korea in 1951 and remained there through June 1952, spending Christmas 1951 overseas. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division as a messenger clerk, driving a jeep between headquarters and frontline positions delivering orders, reports, maps, and communications materials across dangerous terrain.
“Well, that is just something I felt I needed to do and protect our country,” he said.
His responsibilities extended beyond simply driving. Ford maintained and transported cryptographic equipment, including the M-209 cipher machine, a compact but complex device used to secure military communications.
“It had like a thousand parts in it,” Ford said.
Before secure digital communications existed, soldiers like Ford were critical links between units. Messenger clerks regularly traveled exposed roads between positions, carrying information that commanders depended on.
One memory still stands out. Ford recalled helping deploy panel markers on a
mountainside so medical helicopters could land and evacuate soldiers after an attack that left seven dead and one wounded.
“Seven of our boys got killed in an outpost,” Ford said. “I did not talk about this for years and years.”
When Ford returned home, he went to work for an oil exploration company and built a life back in Oklahoma, while continuing his commitment to fellow veterans through service as commanding officer multiple times at both the Edmond American Legion and Edmond Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
“Because of being a veteran, I have two pins I give anytime I see a veteran anywhere,” Ford said. “I have already given away over 100 of them.”
Decades later, his service has been recognized through awards, including the Quilt of Honor and South Korea’s Ambassador for Peace Medal. However, he has never received any award for his service from the U.S. Army.
He also hopes to one day return to Korea and is currently planning a trip.
“If I get to go to Korea, that would top my life off,” Ford said.
