American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Mission Statement The AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior, value added performance, docility and carcass excellence for the beef industry, while also providing expanded membership services for adult and junior members. Greetings! Fall is upon us and winter is just around the corner. The state fairs are wrapped up and the American Royal and North American are quickly approaching. I have truly appreciated my time here at the AMAA. While traveling around and meeting members, I have observed many similarities in thoughts for the breed. For the most part, the members are committed, cognizant and are ready to face the challenge to progress. I have been extremely impressed and a bit relieved with the commitment to the breed that I have seen the past few months. To obtain any goal we have to take ownership of the situation to not only continue on, but to also reach further. The loyalty of the Maine-Anjou breeders is very strong and this is a rare attribute in the world today. The breed has been extremely hot in the past and I believe that we can get there again with work and time. I personally have been involved in a few other breeds and I have seen the fare weather fans that want to raise those breeds when demand is high, but exit the first sign of a cloudy day. As a business person you can understand that to a degree, but the folks that were committed before the wave began to hit, are the ones that truly prosper in the big picture. These staunch breeders are also the ones that are instrumental in moving the breed forward. I do have a worry that too many breeders are looking to other

breeds to make improvements rather than searching within. I would like to say thank you for your steadfast commitment and your continued support of the breed. While visiting with many breeders, I have found that there are both praise as well as some concerns about where the breed is at. To me, having cognizance of where you are is the first step to making change and exploiting our current strengths. How many of you have bought or raised young cattle that had the visual traits that you desire and appreciate, but when you ask them to truly function as a normal beef cow they just don’t get it done? Whether it is to milk and raise a calf or convert and grow, the ones that caught your eye early in life just didn’t meet your standards when the halter came off. This seems to be some of the problems that we need to address. • Challenge - a call or summons to engage in any contest, as of skill, strength, etc. This is my challenge to you the membership to continue working on these traits when making breeding decisions. I believe we have many great breeders that can lead in making true genetic progress within the breed. I think to meet this challenge we have to analyze, identify and act. I like many have been guilty of being barn-blind, this is hard to avoid when you are passionate and take pride in working hard every day on a project whether it is a single animal or a whole herd. I believe that
if we can objectively analyze what we have in herd and build from there we can more readily produce more good cattle. The utilization of EPDs can be a great non-biased tool to add into your selection criteria. Even before the introduction of EPDs master breeders would follow lineage and pedigree documentation to better predict the production value of an animal. Now, we have so many more tools at our disposal that can be utilized which are also based on the performance measures that have been produced by the animal’s ancestors. When selection pressure is placed on certain traits they will improve, the history of the Maine-Anjou breed can attest to this. Birthing issues have been a hurdle the breed has had to face and I think that you the breeders have placed emphasis on this and it has dramatically improved. Our growth traits and milk are major areas that I hear about from breeders. We have cattle within the breed that not only excel in these traits, but also have balance to their genetic profile and
visual quality. So before your next action that will impact your program, consider incorporating EPDs into that process. If you have already engaged genetic estimates in your selection process then please continue and educate others. I believe the concerns that I hear about can be reconciled fairly quick if we as progressive breeders will breed cattle that will excel tomorrow as well as today. I would also like to remind all of you about the opportunities coming up in the Bright Lights sale Jan. 16, in Denver. This year’s sale will have many stout herdsire prospects, embryo packages and females that can take your program to the next level. It is the second week of October as I am writing this and oh things have changed in the last few months in the livestock and grain business. Video and auction sales began their early summer run with elevated prices and by late summer the calf prices began to cave in, dropped anywhere from $25 to $40 a hundred, and sometimes more. In the midwest the news reported that 500 pound steer calves were bringing an average of around $2.90 to $2.95 per pound and 60 days later the five weight calves were bringing an average of $2.35 to $2.40 per pound. That’s about $50 per hundred less. That is approximately $200 - $300 less per calf for the cow-calf operator. With this down swing in prices the attitude was was on of doom and gloom. Interesting enough, many of these producers had lost track of what these calves were bringing only a few years ago. The average price of calves in September of 2011 was around $750 per head, in September of 2012 it was $825 per head, in September of 2013 at $850, September 2014 at $1,400 and this year they are averaging $1,050 to $1,075. Even at today’s prices, it still is the second highest price in history of the cattle business. We all should be more thankful, because it could be worse! Reported feedlot losses per head are ranging from $350 to $600 per head. Quoting from one of the large sale barn owners in the midwest, “The beef market is under the most pressure seen in history. Mad cow seems like a dream - we only went down $22 a hundred in 2003. Today, meat prices remain at levels seen when we had $175 fat cattle and we have lost $55 a hundred in the last six months. This is just wrong!” With the dramatic losses that have been incurred in the feedlot sector, those managers and owners that I have been in contact with are demanding a rigid calf health program documented by a veterinarian’s statement. In addition, managers that are marketing on a grid system are looking for cattle with known genetics, cattle that have closeout history concerning gains and feed efficiency and cattle that have known carcass results. As I travel, the percent of commercial producers that know how their cattle perform today is unbelievably low, almost nonexistent. 10 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
Why is this the case? My thoughts are that each commercial producer should be the number one salesman of his product and he should be able to tell you something more than the calf ’s sale weight. To learn more is to potentially earn more. This is the one reason that the AMAA/Tri-County Steer and Heifer Futurity (TCSCF) has provided feeding options to Maine-Anjou producers for the last three years and will again offer cattlemen the option to feed some of their cattle to find out how they performed and experience and learn the other side of the cattle feeding industry. It only takes the market going against you $40 to $50 a hundred and backing you into a corner to make producers see that some future potential improvements in performance and carcass traits may help to improve the potential gain. 2015-2016 AMAA/Tri-County Steer and Heifer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) The AMAA and the TCSCF is offering producers the opportunity to retain ownership and feed your Maine-Anjou cattle to obtain the harvest data that will assist you in your continued efforts to improve your genetics. For those of you who are traveling on Interstate 29, take Exit 24 and go east ten miles to Tabor, Iowa. No one will be billed for feed, it will be deducted from the proceeds of the cattle! After 10 years of AMAA national feed trials, we have collected feeding and carcass data on nearly 1,500 cattle consigned by 150-160 producers from 12 states. From these feed trial results we have shown and proven that the Maine-Anjou breed can compete successfully in every facet of the cattle feeding industry. To the many consignors that have supported our breed testing venues throughout the years, thanks to each and every one of you for your support and making this data collection become a reality. You have all helped to prove that the Maine-Anjou breed can compete in any arena and succeed! The collection of 15 years of performance and carcass data has helped to develop and produce carcass EPDs more than 1,000 Maine-Anjou bulls. Thank you! It is my hope that as the Maine-Anjou breed goes forward, producers will begin to embrace the information that has been collected to assist them when it comes to the selection of traits that will help to improve their genetics. The AMAA’s 50K DNA enhanced EPD profiles will help producers to expedite the genetic improvement in their herds because of increased EPD accuracies and documented performance. Embrace this information and the Maine-Anjou breed can provide you with the genetics to help achieve your goals. Farewell
As I write my last editorial to you, the Maine-Anjou membership, I want you to know it has been my honor and privilege to serve you! Many thank-yous are in order and I do so with some reservation, as I am sure I will miss someone or some group. If that happens, please do not be offended. Just chalk it up to the old fella is losing it! The journey began back in the spring of 1990 when I was fortunate enough to be one of seven interviewees in front of the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) search committee. At that time, the game plan was to select three of the seven to interview in front of the full AMAA Board of Directors. I, along with four other individuals, must have not done a very good job of impressing the search committee, as only two of the seven were asked to return - I not being one of them. After hearing the disappointing news, it was time for some soul searching. Rhonda and I talked it over, and the decision was made to keep pursuing the position. At the time Tom Van Vliet was the President of the AMAA Board of Directors so I placed a call to Tom

basically begging for a second interview at no cost to the AMAA. I simply asked for another hour of their time. Luckily my request was granted, so the journey continued. I was the last of three interviewees that day in Kansas City, Mo., at a now closed down Ramada Inn. I remember it like it was yesterday! Being last had its advantages; I was informed of a few of the questions that would be asked, along with the notion that I had to watch out for two board members in particular. Later, I would get to know them very well: Mr. Glen Ferris and Mr. Lynn Esse. When I walked in that interview room, I vividly remember thinking the two candidates before me didn’t seem as enthused as when they walked into their interview, so I had nothing to lose. Being upbeat and positive, I used the famed UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden’s, Pyramid of Success as a model for my presentation. By 10:30 p.m. that evening the job of Executive Vice-President of the AMAA was offered and accepted. For sure, the journey was to begin in earnest. Those first three months were a struggle, for sure, as the family was still up in Kohler, Wis., where Rhonda was left to run the ship with Megan, Sarah and Zach needing to finish out the school year. Trish Huston, a long-time trusted AMAA employee and I were the only two association employees, along with a lonely computer in the corner of the office. So much handwork and stacks of paperwork filled the tops of

In those early years I owe a lot to three past and notable association CEOs that always had time for a pesky question from a very green association Executive Vice-President: Mr. Dick Spader of the American Angus Association, Mr. Joe Garrett of the American Charolais Association and Dr. Roger Hunsley of the American Shorthorn Association. So many changes have happened in the last 25 plus years…there are too many to mention. Some good, some great, and some we wish were different, but at the end of the day, the Maine-Anjou breed has made some positive imprints within the beef industry. From a personal standpoint, some of the program highlights I believe have been very beneficial to the organization are: • AMAA Junior program: The growth has been exceptional and the scholarship program will continue to expand. What an added tool for our young people, that if used properly, provides an avenue of experiences to use later in life. • MAPP: While a controversial program to some, the program itself has offered a lot of performance data to the system that I am certain we would not have attained. When used properly, it is not an expense to a breeding program, but rather an investment in the breeding program’s growth and prosperity.
I cannot say enough good things about John Boddicker, he is truly an amazing man! I was fortunate to have worked with John at the American Maine-Anjou Association for a little over five years. John is a guy that is so well respected and looked up to in this business and that is something to be admired. I learned so much from him with my year’s at the association. His work ethic is second to none and no matter who you are or how high or low on the “totem pole” you are, he treats everyone with the utmost respect and honesty and that is something we all need to strive for. Congrats on a heck of a run at the AMAA, John! Kyla Copeland, past Voice Editor, owner Focus Marketing Group • Bright Lights Sale: From the Denver Maine-Anjou sale’s humble beginnings, (the sale was the brain child of K&A Farm, Blakesburg, Iowa), to what the sale has progressed to is quite a feat. For a number of years, the Maine-Anjou breed has sold more cattle at auction in Denver than any other breed. Not for one or two years, but a number of years! • AMAA Data System: AMAA’s current move to the DigitalBeef system will prove to be a major step forward from a breeder informational standpoint and one of ease of access. • Commercial Development Program: It is a program that not enough breeders take advantage of! This is a side of the industry that the Maine-Anjou breed has so much to offer, with a huge upside from a bull-selling standpoint if substantiated data can be provided. I repeat, huge

When we started out, John was one of the guys who encouraged us to not give up, to be better and to be progressive as a Maine-Anjou breeder. John has always shown great leadership and people skills, he has always been very approachable and willing to listen. John has done an awesome job representing the breed and will always ‘Bleed Maine-Anjou.’ We would like to wish John the best as he trots off in his wagon to enjoy retirement.” Jirl Buck, Buck Cattle Company, Madill, Okla. upside for breeding programs that want to sell more bulls and replacement females. • Steer Feeding Trials/Research Projects: It is hard to put into words what these programs have added to the vitality of the Maine-Anjou breed. These projects sometimes fly under the radar, but offer great insight for progressive breeding and association decisions. • Heritage Road: An overdue venue that recognizes those that have made a contribution to the long-term success of the Maine-Anjou breed. • Reaching Beyond Foundation: This foundation has all the ingredients to push this breed into the next century with a flurry of positives. Contributions to the foundation are obviously vital to the foundation’s success! The journey has a great amount of respect and admiration for those that have made the road-traveled very rewarding: Thank you to all of the industry people I have come to know and work with over the years. Great industry, great people! Thank you to the AMAA membership for your friendship and support. Thank you to all of the juniors that I have come in contact with - you have helped keep me young at heart. Thank you to all of the true breeders of MaineAnjou cattle. Because of your belief, dedication and association-support, the many accomplishments are a direct by-product of your programs. Thank you to all of you that have provided constructive criticism about different issues/policies, it never hurts to hear constructive criticism, especially when it leads to a positive outcome. Thank you to all of the AMAA board members I have worked with over the years. It has been my
pleasure to work with such dedicated people. Thank you to all of the AMAA Board Presidents during my tenure: Mr. Tom Van Vliet, Mr. Glen Elliott, Mr. Bill Thorne, Mr. Fred Nessler, Mr. Larry Breon, Mr. Jirl Buck, and Mr. Marty Van Vliet. Your guidance, trust and friendship will forever be felt and cherished. Thank you to all of the past and present AMAA staff. Words cannot express my gratitude to those of you that dedicated your best to the position that you held or now hold. My life is better for having been associated with you! I am not quite sure thank you are the two words I want to use when speaking of my family. They, more than anyone, realize the early years of travel and time away from home. Three youngsters of junior high and high school age that Rhonda took charge of and molded into the fine young adults they are now! Rhonda was the true glue on the home front that allowed me to do what I could do to further the wants and needs of the Maine-Anjou membership. While I am quite proud of my service here at AMAA, it does carry a far second from what our family has accomplished over the same time span. Yes, my individual journey has come to an end here as Executive Vice-President of the AMAA, but as we all know there are many more miles to be traveled and many more areas of importance to be accomplished. I respectfully ask you to be as supportive of your new Executive Vice-President, Mr. Blake Nelson, as you have been of me. Blake is a bright young man of high values that will bring a new vigor to the position that will help carry the breed to new heights within the beef industry. 2016 Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Bull & Female Sale 3 p.m. Saturday, January 16 • Entry Deadline: November 15 Rules, Regulations and PRoceduRes
• Eligibility: Active AMAA adult and junior members are eligible to consign to this sale. • Fees: An official entry form, original registration certificate or application for registration and proper fees due at printed deadline time. $100 of the $250 entry fee will be applied to sale commission which will be on a sliding scale with a maximum of 12%. For consignments that go through the sale, the $60 NWSS yard charges will be deducted from your sale settlement. Sales commission will apply to any total “No Sale” prices. Entry fees are non-refundable. • Health Certificate: An individual health certificate must accompany every consignment, made in quadruplicate and leaving blank the consignee and destination spaces. Each animal must meet the health regulations set by the state of Colorado for interstate shipment. • Substitutions: $50 per head. • Payment: All AMAA past due accounts will be deducted from consignor prior to payment. • Data: Scrotal circumference, WDA and ultrasound data will be made available on every sale bull. • Entries: REMINDER entries no longer have to be sired by a Maine-Anjou bull as long as they still meet all other standing requirements. • Hair Samples: For purposes of parent verification. (At the discretion of AMAA) • Veterinary Service: Will aid at check-in. Consignments suspected of unethical practices will be disqualified. • Semen Test: Every bull 14 months or older at the time of the sale must have a satisfactory semen evaluation. A semen evaluation certificate must accompany the health certificate.
NOTEWORTHY ITEMS & PROCEDURES • Sale order and screening process. - A three man committee will screen all bulls. - EPDs will be provided to the screening committee to be used at their discretion. - Each committee member will be evaluating structural and phenotypic design. - Accumulated points will be used in the process to determine sale order. - The following minimums must be met to be eligible for sale order: • WDA at a minimum of 2.5 lbs. • Scrotal minimum of 28 c.m. on bulls under a year of age and 30 c.m. over a year of age. • The number of bulls sold will not be set at a certain number. • Bulls that accumulate a low point total may be screened from the sale. Entry fees of screened bulls are non-refundable. • Screened bulls will be charged a $60 yard fee to be paid by consignor to the NWSS. • ONLY PHA and TH FREE consignments will be sold. • Steve Bonham, Oklahoma, will be the auctioneer.

I trust everyone had a good summer break and enjoyed nationals! I hope everyone is looking forward to the show season, I know I am. As I sit in my dorm room at Oklahoma State, thinking about the season I am positively and absolutely stoked about the American Royal, Louisville, Denver and Fort Worth. Kansas City has the infamous American Royal show, located downtown. While it is a tad bit sketchy as far as neighborhoods go, I do love the fact that they have some of the BEST haunted houses in the country. I was able to go to two last year and they were super cool, if ya like that sort of thing. I look forward to seeing all of you guys on the show road this year! Cheer on your favorite football teams and get ready for college basketball! See you at the Royal!

hOW TO CREATE An OnlinE ACCOunT
Go to maine-anjou.org and click on the green login tab to the left of the screen. Click on “Create Account.” Here are the steps: 1. Type in your breeder number. 2. You will be prompted to enter a valid e-mail address. 3. Enter a password of your choice. Passwords are case sensitive. This information will be updated to your account and you may login with your breeder number and password from that point on. Once your online account is set up you will be able to register, transfer registrations, view inventory, complete your MAPP enrollment or enter performance data. Note: Online registrations are not automatically registered. They’re completed in the order that they’re received.

To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season, please follow the tips below: Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering owns the dam with exception of ET calves. If ET, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH typed and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at maine@kc.rr.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. Rush work is processed ahead of regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail so please do not procrastinate to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers that they are purchasing from a reputable business person. It is now time to register show animals for winter and spring shows. Please keep in mind during the winter show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.
Rush oRDeRs
If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it will be considered a rush unless otherwise specified. It is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no sameday turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WILL NOT deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. If a paper is needed within two weeks, a rush will be required at this time of year.

Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site, maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed by clicking on “Search the Maine-Anjou Breed” or by logging into your account.
Dna, th anD pha ReQuiRements
Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. You NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015 27

may read about these two programs by visiting maineanjou.org and clicking on “Member Information” and then choose the “MAPP or Breeders Choice” option. If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.
Foundation animals
Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new selfbilling sheet for foundation fees.
bull calF registration
If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three weeks.

Registered animals with certificates are now able to be transferred online but must be completed by the current owner by logging into his/her online account to complete the transfer. If the buyer is responsible for the transfer fees, the seller must indicate this in the comment line, otherwise the seller will be charged the transfer fees. Remember, anytime you transfer an animal your dues must be paid unless the animal being transferred is the last animal in your inventory. You will be able to see your current inventory when logging in to your account online.
online registration discounts
A 10 percent discount on registration fees will be given to all active members registering online (discount does not apply to annual dues, new

memberships, MAPP fees or foundation animals). If you have not created an online account, you may do so by visiting maine-anjou.org, select the green tab that says “Login”, select “Create Account”, enter your current breeder number, enter your e-mail address, verify your e-mail address and enter a password of your choice. You will then be automatically logged in to your account. You may view your current inventory, cancelled animals you no longer have, register and transfer animals and enroll your MAPP online if you are a current MAPP member.
Purchase registration blocks
You may purchase registration blocks of 15, 25, 50, 75 and 100 at a discounted rate. These blocks are prepaid registrations and may only be used for animals under 13 months of age. Any unused blocks expire December 31 of each year. See the new selfbilling worksheet for pricing. Multiple discounts will not be allowed. If you register online, the block discount (the greater discount) will be applied at checkout.

All AMAA members participating in MAPP must report all breeding females by Dec. 21, 2015. Directions will be posted on our web site on how to enroll your current inventory. If you would prefer to have your inventory mailed, please contact Donna Grame at (816) 431-9950 Nov. 9, 2015. MAPP Members must have their 2016 fees paid to register for the 2016 year.
