Twombly
Performance Horses began selling horses in 1989. They specialize in pretty, colored performance geldings. What makes their business unique is that all the geldings are ridden on their ranch by Dan, Alies, John and Tia Twombly-who combined have more than 100 years experience riding performance geldings. The family buys, rides and promotes every horse they sell. And to define performance according to Dan means well broke, gentle minded and works off a loose rein. They hold two performance horse sales at their ranch each year in May and September. They are excited to offer videos of the horses online before their sales. They will show how well they ride in the pasture and in the arena and also show them team roping. Twomblys always try to have a few so well broke that they can ride bridleless. They sell roughly 25 geldings at each sale as they feel that is the most the family can ride to show the geldings at their highest potential. At their last spring sale half of their top ten geldings sold went to repeat buyers bidding over the phone-sight unseen-sold by their reputation. Dan & Ann Twombly along with Jeff and Jean Levenstam recently purchased Zan It, an own son of Hollywood Dun It. (250 AQHA performance points, 3 time World Champion, 6 time World Show Qualifier). They sell Zan It’s foal crop at their September sales. Zan it is the prefect fit for Twomblys. He throws 80% colored colts which are clean and refined with big hips. In the 1960s and 1970s we were using horses on a daily basis in our family feed yard. This prompted us to develop a breeding program that would fill our need, and needs of others, for good cow horses. For over 30 years our horse and farming operation has grown; however we still raise good all-around using horses. Horses that are calm, cowy, and have enough body to drag a steer out of the yard. We specialize in horses that you can rope on in the morning, show in pleasure that afternoon, and still win in a halter class that evening! Our Stallion, Double Tuf Chex consistently produces these types of horses. “Chex” has size, bone, muscle and he’s extremely athletic. Crossing Chex, a 2002 World Show Qualifier, with our big-bodied mares has produced numerous point earners, many top performers that have been successful in several events, and a World Show Qualifier. Broodmares are the key to any breeding program. Our mares have size, plenty of muscle and are very pretty. Our breeding program started with many granddaughters of Leo and Three Bars, and their blood still runs deep in our program, along with Zan Parr Bar, Two Eyed Jack, Zippo Pine Bar, Roan Bar, and Tom Baker. We typically raise between 15 and 20 foals each year, selling everything by private treaty. Please accept our invitation to call or stop in anytime. The Story of Broken Diamond Quarter Horses….. The beginning of a life long dream of raising quality performance horses began for John Jensen with the purchase of an aged brood mare named Sally Rey #11546 in 1963. Her 1964 colt, Sonny Rey, started the John Jensen performance horse story as he was an excellent head horse, would cut a cow, won a few buckles and earned three trips to the NHSRA Finals. John added daughters of Pat Star Jr., Poco Tom, Nevada King, Ringo Reed, and raised a daughter of Bobs Folly. From this mare base John bred to My Beaver, owned by Waldo Haythorn. In 1977 John purchased Happys Cardinal also from Haythorns. It was said that “Cardinal” was one of the strongest breeding sons of Happy Hancock. He lived to be 33 years old and sired over 300 foals naturally. Masies Blue, a Waggoner 101 son, was introduced in 1990 as an outcross sire. John branded his horses with a quarter circle over a triangle on the left hip. John’s horses were known to turn heads and were good minded, very trainable and were very correct in their conformation. In 2001 John purchased Power Rancher, a Gay Bar King grandson out of a King Fritz granddaughter, and he is currently the main sire. In 2006 John and Shari invited Tim Vivion to become a partner and renamed the horse program – Broken Diamond Quarter Horses and changed the brand that the horses carry to a broken diamond on the left hip (see above ad). The quality, conformation, correctness and the ability to perform has not been compromised -- just a new name for the same “great product” and “a ride” that you can be proud of! 2011 Annual Horse and Production Sale Reference Guide

The Nebraska Quarter Horse Classic started in 2005 with Lance Most Quarter Horses and Box O Quarter Horses, Jecca and Cash Ostrander, extending an invitation to a hand selected group of breeders to offer an elite grouping of registered Quarter Horses from their Sandhills Ranches of Western Nebraska. Also we have a ‘Bar Hells Jack’ son and a son of ‘Merada Ima Boonsmal”, waiting in the wings. Our broodmares are deep bodied, big hipped and have a good slope to their shoulder, with a sharp, keen head and brains to match. We ride all our mares as three year olds, before they become moms. They are 5th generation cattle ranchers and horse breeders on both sides of the family. Jim's grandfather, Albert Lopez, held his first horse sale in 1943 with Casey Tibbs in Ft. The 15th Annual Van Norman and friends Production Sale will feature weanlings, yearlings, started two-year-olds, broke horses, and broodmares from the reputed Van Norman Ranch of Tuscarora, NV, winner of the 2001 AQHA Best Ranch Remuda Award. In addition to the Van Normans, several other breeders will be represented: Rhoads Ranch and Deadwood Quarter Horses (Linda and Randy Bunch) of Tuscarora, NV; Porath Quarter Horses of Rockland, ID; Dennis and Mary Journigan and John and Chris Tueller of Lamoille, NV; were all invited to participate from the beginning based upon their breeding programs which were offshoots of the Van Norman program or for their close association or historical ties to the Van Norman family. Among the 2011 guest consignors will be Cory Shelman of Burns, OR, Matt Mori of Paradise Valley,NV, Rolly and Becky Lisle of Northfork Nevada, Zach and April Kelley of Carlin, NV, Gary and Fillis Takacs of Winnemucca, NV, and Nick Dowers of King Hill, ID. Approximately 110 horses, representing most of the working cowhorse families, will be offered for auction. Due to the ongoing restructuring of the Van Norman Ranches, there will be a large offering of horses from that program as they continue the process of reducing the number of horses the ranch runs. The preview of all broke horses consigned to the sale will be held at 2:00 p.m. following the Stockhorse Challenge. Participants in the Van Norman Sale follow the vaquero tradition of taking a horse through several levels of training beginning with the snaffle bit at age two culminating in a finished bridle horse at seven or eight. The two, threes, and four year olds will have been ridden in the snaffle bit while the older horses will be either in the hackamore, two-rein, or bridle. Older horses will have been used on the ranch in all aspects of ranch work. Weanlings and yearlings will have been broke to lead and load. Broodmares will have been vet checked for pregnancy and their status published in the catalog and updated in the sale ring. The philosophy and training methods of renowned horsemen Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt prevail. The third weekend in September generally promises beautiful early fall weather with deep blue skies and Nevada blue mountains to complement the fellowship of lovers of good horses gathered to pick out that special addition to their working ranch remuda, their show string, or to their family’s backyard. Dear Quarter Horse Breeder: I have made a decision in the past week to disperse 100% of my Quarter Horses. They consist of nine young Driftwood breeding age mares, with two colts on the ground now. Also two, two-year- old MP Thriftwood fillies, one, two-year-old PC Frenchmans Hayday filly and one, threeyear-old MP Thriftwood filly. In addition there are two MP Thriftwood Three-Year-Old stallions and two, four-year-old Junewoood stallions. We also have three, two-year-old Dakota Drift stallions. All of these horses are Driftwood bred. The mares were bred in 2010 to Double Drift Ike, who is a 25% Driftwood stallion. The Wagon Wheel Ranch breeding program is primarily designed to concentrate the blood of specific legendary sires, i.e. King P-234, Joe Hancock, Red Man, Buck Hancock, Blue Valentine, Two Eyed Jack, et al.. To accomplish the above, we breed King bred stallions to King bred mares; Joe Hancock bred stallions to Joe Hancock mares, etc.. This inbreeding allows us to hold, and in some cases, to increase the percentage of this blood carried by foals produced from these breedings. It should be noted that a modern term, “linebreeding”, refers to milder cases of inbreeding. When horses are inbred, their progeny have one or more matched pairs of chromosomes, out of the thirty-two (32) pairs which all horses have. The significance of one or more matched pairs of chromosomes in a breeding horse is that each chromosome carries hundreds of genes. Genes carry the elements by which hereditary characteristics are transmitted from parent to progeny. Theoretically, each mature reproductive cell carries a gene for every inheritable characteristic (the progeny receives a set of genes from each of its parents). Therefore, when a breeding horse has even one pair of chromosomes matched, the consistency of that type produced in its foals increases, notably! As the number of matched pairs of chromosomes in a breeding horse increases, so does the uniformity of foals produced! The ability to consistently produce above average usinghorses displaying the conformation, disposition, and ability of the legendary foundation sires - this is what sets our horses apart from many. n

livestock auction, he probably had no idea it would grow to become a sprawling, modernized business that currently employs some 40 people. The livestock business was located in South Mandan until 1956, when it relocated, moving to "The Strip" on Memorial Highway in Eastern Mandan. The pavillion was officially opened 50 years ago. Today, Kist Livestock is one of the largest auction facilities in North Dakota. n 2006, Kist Livestock Auction was awarded "The Granite Award", for being a cornerstone of the Mandan and regional economy since 1942. The Three D’s Stock Farm and the 1945
Hankins Brothers Sale by Larry Thornton
I often wonder what it would have been like to attend some of the famous sales of the past to see some of the great quarter horses from the past go through the sale ring. Maybe even bid on them! One of those times would have to be the 1945 Hankins Brothers Sale, where the Three D’s Stock Farm bought Poco Bueno. Poco Bueno became a noted show horse with a great record at halter and
cutting is phenomenal. The crossing of his daughter Poco Lena with Doc Bar and the daughters of her full brother Poco Tivio with Doc Bar is the backbone of modern cutting. His success as a sire and his influence on the AQHA has put him in the AQHA Hall of Fame.he Three D’s Stock Farm of Arlington, Texas was one of the great breeding programs to grace the quarter horse industry.

The Three D’s Stock Farm was founded by AQHA Hall of Fame member E. Paul Waggoner. Waggoner was the grandson of the Waggoner Ranch founder Dan Waggoner. The Three D’s Stock Farm is no longer in existence. In fact the land this great breeding program stood on is now called Six Flags Over Texas. Poco Bueno got his start in life on the ranch of his breeder Jess L. Hankins of Rocksprings, Texas. He was born in 1944 and sired by the great King P-234 and out of Miss Taylor by (Old) Poco Bueno. Jess L. Hankins is in the AQHA Hall of Fame. Garford Wilkinson wrote a biography of Poco Bueno in the December 1961 issue of THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL called “Poco Bueno, Leading Sire of ROM Performance Horses” that tells about the circumstances of how E. Paul Waggoner came to own Poco Bueno.
to pay the price and went back to California. The next step in our story is the Hankins Sale where Poco Bueno was an entry. It was at the Hankins sale in October 1945 that E. Paul Waggoner bought Poco Bueno for $5,700, which was considered “a fabulous figure for a quarter horse stallion.” G. W. Turpin tells Wilkinson why Mr. Waggoner wanted Poco Bueno. “It was in 1945 that Paul Waggoner decided to concentrate more intensely on a quarter horse breeding program at his Three D’s Stock Farm at Arlington, Texas.” Poco Bueno went on to become a famous show horse and when the AQHA started keeping show records he became an AQHA Champion. He was a noted cutting horse.
He started by telling that Poco Bueno “was not early recognized for his potentialities.” The first time Hankins showed the young stallion they placed fifth in the yearling class at Fort Worth. Jess L. Hankins was in the business of selling the horses he bred, as that was his business. So he put a price of $1,250 on the young stallion and got no takers. He was told, “his asking price was too high.”
Turpin goes on to explain that in order to accomplish his goals Waggoner needed a great young stallion to stand and Poco Bueno was that stallion. The success of this great breeding program is legendary. Poco Bueno became a leading sire that during his day led such sire lists as the Leading ROM list and the AQHA Champions list. His foals include the legendary Poco Lena, five time NCHA Reserve World Champion and dam of the great stallions Doc O’Lena and Dry Doc.
The next show we know about was at Stamford, Texas where Poco Bueno won his class and the asking price went to $3,500. As the Wilkinson article indicates Poco Bueno had become “an extraordinary specimen of horseflesh.”
Poco Bueno became the primary focus of the breeding program at Three D’s Stock Farm at Arlington. But Poco Bueno was not the only stallion that Waggoner bought on that October day in 1945.
This is where the noted breeders Frank Vessels Sr. and Channing Peake come into the pictures. Frank Vessels Sr. was the founder of the Los Alamitos Racecourse and the owner and breeder of such great horses as Triple Chick. Peake and his wife would become the owners of the legendary roping sire Driftwood. They were very interested in Poco Bueno but declined
The second stallion Waggoner bought was called Sundown. Sundown was a 1944 stallion sired by King P-234 and out of Stifle, by Billy Sunday. When we see the price on this stallion, we can tell that based on the price of horses during this time, Waggoner thought a lot of Sundown. He paid $4,100 for this bay colt.

The bay colt Sundown became a horse named Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek became a good sire with foals like AQHA Champions: Beaver Bell Boy, Beaverette, Kitty Bee Creek, Lucky Roan King, My Beaver and Starlita Creek. His AQHA Superior halter horse was Beaver Bell Boy. Beaver Creek showed his true prowess as a sire through his daughters. When his daughters were bred to Poco Bueno they got the AQHA Champion Poco Pamlet and the ROM performers Poco Club, Poco Blunder and Poco Matis. When bred to other stallions his daughters produced the AQHA Honor Roll Roping Horse George Dun and the Superior performer Echo Ed. The third stallion Waggoner bought in 1945 was Bee Line. Bee Line was sired by King P-234 and out of Little Red Ant by Little Jazz. He was bred by Jess L. Hankins. Waggoner didn’t actually buy Bee Line, but he bought his mother Little Red Ant and she was in foal to King P-234 and so Bee Line was foaled in 1946. Bee Line and Beaver Creek were used on the Waggoner Ranch at Vernon, Texas. Bee Line went on like Poco Bueno and Beaver Creek to become a contributor to the Waggoner Ranch breeding program. He was an AQHA Champion sire with foals like Jet Beeline and Bobby Bix. Bee Line was the sire of the dam of Poco Gata, an AQHA Champion sired by Poco Bueno. Bee Line was the sire of the Blue Hen reining producer Boggie Bee. This great mare was the dam of such noted NRHA reining horses and producers of reining horses as Nifty Della Bee, Nifty Copycat, Double Bee Miss and Boggie’s Last. All of these foals were sired by Nifty Bee by Bee Line, making them inbred to Bee Line through their sire and dam. Nifty Bee and Boggie Bee produced 11 total foals. When Poco Bueno became the established senior sire for E. Paul

Waggoner he would hold his own annual production sale. Over the years breeders would go to the Three D’s Stock Farm Production Sale. Some examples of those who made some successful purchases would include Jimmy Randals and Paul Curtner. Jimmy Randals went to the 1952 sale and bought Poco Dell. Randals was just starting his ranching operation and wanted to start a breeding program with a focus on cutting horses. He planned to by $2,000 but ended up giving $2,800. Poco Dell would become a successful show horse earning an AQHA Championship with points in cutting. He became a very popular stallion that sired 18 AQHA Champions, 48 show ROM, 11 superiors in halter and three

Randals considered Madonna Dell the “top horse” he showed. Through the purchase of Poco Dell

Jimmie Randals became a well-respected horseman in the industry and served as the NCHA President from 1973 to 1975. He is a member of the AQHA Hall of Fame. The 1954 Three D’s Stock Farm Production Sale would find Paul Curtner going to buy a filly. He ended up buying a mare named Pretty Rosalie by Pretty Boy. She had a horse colt on her side that Curtner named Poco Pine after the great Poco Bueno rider and trainer Pine Johnson. As the story goes Pine told Paul that he had bought the best colt at the sale. Poco Pine put Curtner in the stallion business after a successful show career. Poco Pine was an AQHA Champion that is reported to have earned 50 Grand Championships at halter. Poco Pine became a leading sire of halter and performance horses with 37 AQHA Champions and 84 ROM. Poco Pine was the broodmare sire of the great pleasure horse sire Zippo Pine Bars. Poco Pine is one of two stallions owned by Paul Curtner that is in the AQHA Hall of Fame. The other Hall of Fame stallion is Zippo Pat Bars, the sire of Zippo Pine Bar, who is also in the AQHA Hall of Fame. I don’t know about you but looking back on this great history and all that came out of that one sale makes me excited about the 2011 sale season. Maybe we will see the next Poco Bueno sell and go to the next Three D’s Stock Farm. You Poco Pine know it could be you! Good luck buyers and sellers.
