How Can it Be

The AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior, value added performance, docility and carcass excellence for the beef industry while also providing expanded membership services for adult and junior members. It seems like only yesterday that we started out 2013 at the National Western Stock Show and here we are closing in on the end of another year. The everlasting drought has again taken its toll on certain areas of the country and the hard working people that have endured the lack of moisture. In other parts of this great country moisture has been abundant at times and sorely missed others, yet some have enjoyed a consistent weather pattern bringing relief to their operations. Regardless of the situation, farmers and ranchers alike dig in and persevere, making the best they can for their families and their operations. From all indications, participation at the national convention in Louisville looks to be very good. If you haven’t already made plans to attend, I invite you to become more involved in national Maine-Anjou functions. We as an organization are very proud to recognize those breeding operations that have made significant differences throughout the breed’s history. Along with this special induction ceremony, Dr. Roger Hunsley will address the membership on a few very important breeder discussion items that will be of interest to everyone, I am sure. The Reaching Beyond foundation will bring to a close two major projects designed to raise funds to help meet the foundation’s goals. Both the Crazy Eight heifer project and Legends of the Breed portrait will be front and center. Two lucky winners of four heifers each will be drawn in the Crazy Eight heifer project and we will be auctioning off the original Legends of the Breed portrait along with 11 artist’s proofs of this exquisite portrait commissioned by C.J. Brown. If you cannot be in attendance and would like to place a bid on the original portrait or one of the artist’s proofs, feel free to contact AMAA staff members Dave Steen, Lindsey Broek or Devon Stewart. American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Registration Changes - Effective Jan. 1, 2014 New fees will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014. Please throw away any old self-billing worksheets you may have. Before submitting work, please go to your Web site, www.maine-anjou.org, to make sure fees are current. Rushes will now be $50 per eight (8) head. Please plan accordingly to avoid extra charges. The AMAA will no longer allow animals to show “unregistered� for sire or dams. If a commercial, you must first register the foundation animal, then register the AMAA animal. Breeders Choice is $20 and MAPP is $10. All sires registered at other breed associations must be paid for and added when registering AI animals and DNA/PH/THA testing must be placed on file with the AMAA. A one-time fee of $40 is charged to add the pedigree. If registering a bull calf, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing on file with the AMAA. Any registration submitted without testing will NOT be registered, instead entered as a performance animal at a non-refundable $10 fee until testing is completed. Once testing is on file, the bull calf will be registered at the regular registration in addition to the $10 fee previously charged. If you are unsure your animal or AI sire has been tested, please
contact the AMAA prior to registering to ensure your registration is not delayed. You may also see if testing is completed by viewing the animals online. Testing is listed at the bottom of each animal screen. Please print the GeneSeek submissions forms from our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org. Testing prices are listed on the submission form. All members will save 10 percent on registration work if submitted online (does not include dues, added pedigrees or shipping costs). If you have not logged in to register since we have updated our Web site, you will need to first create an account using your current breeder number, provide your e-mail address, a password of your choice and it will automatically log you in. Transfers will no longer be required to be mailed in. The seller must login to his/her account online to complete transfers. Members will be eligible to pre-pay for blocks of registrations each year. They may be purchased any time, however, if not used by December 31 the unused blocks will expire. This will only apply to 0-13 months of age animals. See new self-billing worksheet for pricing. 2013 AMAA National Feed Trial The final numbers
by Dave Steen, commercial developement director This edition of the “Commercial Connection” recaps the 2013 National Maine-Anjou Feed Trial held at the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF). The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) and I would like to thank Darrell Busby, manager of the TCSCF and his staff Matt Groves, Meg Groves and Lacy Sleep for collecting the data. Thank you, Leann Plowman-Tibken for keeping the records and mailing the checks along with the feeding and carcass data. They all do a great job and we are very fortunate to be associated with the TCSCF. Thank you, Gregory Feedyards, Tabor, Iowa, for allowing us the opportunity to feed our cattle at your facility. How did the Maine-Anjou’s measure up?
Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) collected growth and carcass data on 286 head of Maine-Anjou cattle thanks to the recruiting efforts of David Steen and Mike Holden. TCSCF has been collecting 6

retained ownership data for 31 years with the main goal of improving profits for cow-calf producers by determining and measuring economically relevant traits. The 2012 drought not only caused forage shortages for the cowherd, but also drove up corn prices resulting in the worst losses in TCSCF program’s history. But, as our cow-calf producers quickly point out, we have added income 10 of the last 12 years. So how did the Maine-Anjou’s do? Were any cattle profitable? In the table below I have compared the high profit one-third heifers and steers with the low profit onethird heifers and steers. The first number that jumps out is the age on delivery. Commercial Connection one of the major reasons that feedlot managers like to feed Maine-Anjou influenced cattle, because they can be fed to heavier market weights, minimizing the chance of deductions for a Yield Grade 4, overfat carcass. As a result, of the seven years of Maine-Anjou feeding trials, we have collected carcass data on a total of 1,309 cattle. The consistency of the overall performance and carcass results substantiates the value of Maine-Anjou genetics! The gap is widening between commodity cattle and cattle that excel for known carcass traits, performance and the ability to perform above average. Why do some cattle grade better, have higher cutabilities, gain faster and do it on less feed? My belief is largely because of superior genetics! I encourage each and every one of you, from seedstock breeders to commercial producers to begin, and to continue, to select for a balance of improved economic traits from birth weight to performance and carcass traits. The heritabilities for these traits are quite high, from 40-70 percent, and improvements can be made very quickly, but a dedicated selection process must be put in place and followed for continued success. The Maine-Anjou breed can compete in any arena and WIN! We are proving this! Thanks again to the producers who so graciously supported our trial this year. Our continuing efforts to collect feeding and carcass data would be of no avail without these committed producers. Considering that this year was the worst cattle feeding year for losses in the 31 years of the TCSCF, these consignors are to be complimented for their commitment to our breed improvement. Due to changes with our online registration login, current members using this service will have to create an online account. Here are the steps: o Type in your breeder number and password as you normally would. o You will be prompted to enter an e-mail address. o Enter a valid e-mail address and your normal password (you do not need to change your pass word). This information will be updated to your account and you can login as you normally would from that point on.

If you are selling an animal we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $25 until Dec. 31, 2013. This fee will increase to $50 as of Jan. 1, 2014 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WILL NOT deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed by clicking on “Search the Maine-Anjou Breed” or by logging into your account.
dNA, Th ANd phA REQUIREMENTS
NEw MEMBERS
All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. You may read about these two programs by visiting our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org, and clicking on “Member Information” and then choose the “MAPP or Breeders Choice” option. If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.
fOUNdATION ANIMAlS
Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grandfathered into the program. If the sire is an A.I. sire and registered at another breed association the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.
Prior to registering any E.T. calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any E.T. registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the E.T.(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays so please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late in the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, so please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

Any bull calf being registered must be TH/PHA free by parents or have testing completed prior to registering and be placed on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered but may be entered as a foundation animal. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three weeks. Registered animals with certificates may be transferred online but must be completed by the current owner by logging into his/her online account to complete the transfer. If the buyer is responsible for the transfer fees, the seller must indicate this in the comment line, otherwise the seller will be charged the transfer fees. Remember, anytime you transfer an animal your dues must be paid unless the animal being transferred is the last animal in your inventory. You will be able to see your current inventory when logging in to your account online.

A 10% discount on registration fees will be given to all active members registering online (discount does not apply to annual dues, new memberships, MAPP fees or foundation animals). If you have not created an online account, you may do so by going to our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org select the green tab that says “Login”, select “Create Account”, enter your current breeder number, enter your e-mail address, verify your e-mail address and enter a password of your choice. You will then be automatically logged into your account. You may view your current inventory, cancelled animals you no longer have, register and transfer animals and enroll your MAPP online if you are a current MAPP member.
2014 dues must be paid. Adult dues are $100 and junior dues are $25. You may now submit your updated weaning and yearling data online. You may log into your online account and select “Performance Data” to submit them electronically. Please allow two business days to see updates online. Please double check all registrations before submitting them to the AMAA. Dues must be paid to register; the owner of the dam must register the animal and use their herd prefix. Please make sure you have filled out all required information so that your registrations are not delayed. Please provide the Sire’s registration number rather than writing the Sire’s name as this slows the registration process.

You may purchase registration blocks of 15, 25, 50, 75 and 100 at a discounted rate. These blocks are prepaid registrations and may only be used for animals under 13 months of age. Any unused blocks expire December 31 of each year. See the new self-billing worksheet for pricing. Multiple discounts will not be allowed. If you register online, the block discount (the greater discount) will be applied at checkout.

The 2014 MAPP enrollment must be completed online before Dec. 1, 2014. Any Enrollments not completed by the deadline will be billed for all active dams. Hello everyone! My name is Kiley Elder, I am from Pella, Iowa and I was recently elected as one of your region two directors. This past summer has been an incredible one. The Nebraska crew helped us pull off a tremendous junior national in Grand Island and we cannot thank them enough for all of their help. Many juniors from the Maine-Anjou breed traveled to Brookings, S.D., for the annual National Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC) that was held in conjunction with the junior Hereford PRIDE convention. I heard it was a great time, as I was unable to attend. It’s that time of year again and the majors are quickly approaching. I know at our house it means we are not only trying to get show cattle ready, but also sale cattle. Let’s just say I’m very excited for all the fall majors, it is by far my favorite time of year. This year’s junior national will be held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. This year the junior board is selling Crazy 8 tickets. This is a raffle to win four bred heifers and the proceeds go to the American Maine-Anjou Association foundation. Drought pressures cattle industry, expansion expected by Jennifer Carrico Continual drought throughout the United States has put stress on the cattle business for the past few years. Texas cattleman, Bill Thorne, says while the drought in the panhandle of Texas, where he lives isn’t near as bad in 2013 as it was the previous two years, it has caused many ranchers and cattle feeders to reduce their operations. “We’ve seen several of the big ranches in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma have to sell cows because they just didn’t have feed available. Many smaller feedlots are for sale and have many pens that are empty because they can’t afford the cattle that are for sale,” he says. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER

Oklahoma State University livestock economist Darrell Peel says historically the cattle cycle has been self-regulating and driven by factors such as calf price levels, beef biology and the rigidity of forage resources used in the industry, but in the past several years it has been affected more by the drought, markets shocks, reduced profitability and global economies. “This means that the last 3.4 million head decline in the beef cow herd was not due to typical cattle cycle factors,” says Peel. Thorne says many of the ranches in his area as well as New Mexico and western Oklahoma that had 500 to 800 cows, had to cut their herds down to 10 percent of what they were originally running because they simply had no feed. During a normal year, Thorne’s area receives about 16 inches of rain. In 2011, they had only 6 inches of rain. That, coupled with 60 days over 100 degrees, caused many ranches to suffer greatly. The following year wasn’t much better, although the temperatures weren’t as hot for as many days. He says 2013 has been better, with rains coming at key times of the year to help grass recover and temperatures have been more moderate, which has helped as well. Most Midwestern states suffered more from the drought conditions in 2012, but also dealt with drought in 2013. Thorne, who grew up in north central Missouri, says the Texas grasses are very hearty and will recover more quickly than the grasses in the Midwest as long
as the rain comes at the right time and isn’t followed by hot and windy conditions. With very little grass available and hay supplies smaller than normal for the past few years, cattlemen have faced many challenges. “The price of feed has had a huge affect on cattlemen in this area. They simply haven’t been able to afford high priced hay and corn,” Thorne says. “The past two years, we were feeding hay all year and normally we wouldn’t feed much hay at all. Commercial herds tried to hold on, but just couldn’t.” Finding hay to purchase was a challenge for them as well and when they did find it, the price was so high ranchers couldn’t afford the purchase. “The drought has been very devastating on the cattle operations in this area,” says Thorne. While the drought is the current factor affecting the cattle cycle, Peel expects the normal factors to become relevant in the future. “In situations where drought has forced inventory adjustments that are counter to what producers want to do, the details of how the adjustments happen become important,” says Peel. Since the peak of the total cattle inventory in January 1995, there has been a steady decrease. The January 2013 inventory was the lowest since 1952, and Peel expects the inventory to be lower yet in January 2014. “Factors such as drought and feed costs have had a tremendous effect on the cattle industry. now focuses on purchasing feeder cattle for the smaller feedlots of 15,000 to 25,000 head and other privately owned feedlots and the larger corporate feedlots of 50,000 to 100,000 head.
