Welcome to the sale! Dear Friends: Welcome to Bieber Red Angus Ranch’s first ever December production sale. As many of you know through out the years we have expanded and breaking up the bull offering for our production sales just started to make sense. Our plan is to offer all of our two year old Red Angus bulls every December from now on. We will be praying for reasonable weather knowing full well that by December winter is generally in full gear. Our two year old offering will expand over the next few years. This year we are offering over 50 bulls and in 2012 that offering will expand to 100 bulls and then around 150 bulls in 2013. We have been intentionally moving some cows to calve in that late spring/early summer time frame to accommodate our operation calving more cows. We have also been implanting embryos for that time frame to increase the scope of this offering. I would be happy to visit with you about those plans. Our thoughts are that this offering will help give your operation the advantage of acquiring two year olds for planning and tax reasons. We will still be offering our Keep’em and Feed’em option. As added bonuses, if you leave your bulls here through the winter, we will semen test them in the spring with the March production sale bulls and deliver them while delivering our March production sale deliveries at no additional charge outside of the daily feed charges. We will lead off the offering with the ET Heifer calves and I personally can’t believe we are doing this. This may be the best set of ET heifer calves we have ever produced. We have focused our ET program on producing great females to help raise the quality of our herd. I have always felt that the most cost effective way to increase quality was to flush the very matrons that have been working effectively in our environment and it has been successful for us. These ET heifers are out of our very best Donors. Your operation will not be disappointed in these females when they produce outstanding progeny for your operation as they have for us. Our Donor offering is going to be like none-other. We are offering Bieber Adelle 8958. She is the dam of Makin Hay, Rough Rider, Outrider and many other outstanding progeny and has probably had as much impact on the breed as any Red Angus cow in North America. 8958’s dam is in the offering as well and we often vacillate between which one is better. The dam of Basin EXT 5233 is one of the best cows we purchased from the Basin program and she has 63 calves to her credit. Many of them are producing females in our herd. One other highlight will be the dam of Bieber Exception 10083, the sire that did an outstanding job in the Messmer program and whose progeny where highlighted in their dispersal. We are currently in a time when those who have cows may see the highest profits in their lifetime. Our work on genetics makes our seedstock as solid as you will find anywhere in the country. These bulls and females are not pampered and will work for your operation. Our philosophy is centered around cattle that will work under reasonable, profitable management. We expect them to perform for you as well as they do for us. As many of you know we ran video and did not bring the cattle through the sale ring last spring. In general it worked very well therefore we will not be running cattle thru the ring this year and instead we will be running video of each lot as they sell. The cattle will be displayed as usual and we will be available to visit with you about any animal in the offering. We believe that this technique is both easier on the cattle and the help, while keeping the sale running smoothly. We would like to thank you in advance for your interest in our breeding program. Schedule of Events Accommodations Thursday, December 8th All Day Inspection of Cattle Offering Visitors welcome – Refreshments served Friday, December 9th 8 A.M. Inspect Cattle Offering 9 A.M. - coffee & rolls - 11 A.M. - Lunch Served 12:30 P.M. sale of 130 females and 60 bulls DELIVERY POLICY: Free delivery on all bull purchases over $2500, to central points up to 300 miles. Volume purchases of 5 or more bulls selling to one ranch delivered up to 500 miles. All bulls under $2500 and females will be delivered at cost. Central point for delivery will include auction barns, vet clinics and ranches that offer to serve as a delivery point. We simply ask for your cooperation in arranging the delivery of your cattle. This will keep the cattle from being on the truck longer than necessary and help to get the bulls to you with the least possible stress and in the best possible condition. HEALTH: Ashley Vet Clinic, 701-288-3234, will be available on sale day. All cattle are on a complete vaccination program supervised by Ashley Vet Clinic. Bieber Red Angus participates in the South Dakota Animal Industry Board’s Johnne’s Testing program and every cow in the herd past its second lactation has tested negative for Johnne’s. In the past bulls have been tested for persistent BVD carriers and all tests were negative for a number of years. We have chosen not to test the bulls this year since no positives have been found in over 10 years. Bieber Red Angus participates in the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program. Heifer calves have been Bangs vaccinated. GENETIC DEFECTS: Every animal in the Bieber Red Angus production sale is guaranteed negative for the recessive gene associated with Osteopetrosis and Arthrogryposis Multiplex (Curly Calf Syndrome) and Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH). With this guarantee, we provide our customers the opportunity to purchase their choice of cattle with very little risk. DNA samples have been collected on every animal in the sale with any known carrier in the first three generations and tested negative unless otherwise noted. RETAINED INTEREST: We are retaining 1/2 interest in all bulls in the sale. We are selling the remaining 1/2 interest, full possession, and full salvage value on these bulls. This option gives Bieber Red Angus Ranch the option to collect, use and market semen from the bull and does not restrict the purchaser from doing the same. This collection, unless agreed otherwise, would be done at the expense of Bieber Red Angus Ranch, at the buyers convenience. Also at the time of purchase, the highest bidder on a retained interest bull may elect to purchase exclusive semen rights for 100% of the purchase price in addition to the purchased price on retained bulls. If a buyer elects to purchase exclusive semen rights, Bieber Red Angus Ranch interest then becomes in herd use only, but Bieber Red Angus Ranch retains all rights to use the bull within their herd. BIRTH WEIGHTS/CALVING EASE: All bulls are scored for calving ease with our three star (*) scoring system. Three stars (***) indicates that a particular bull can be used on heifers under standard conditions with little or no calving difficulty. Two

One star (*) indicates that a particular bull be used on cows. These bulls will produce little difficulty when used on cows. Birth weights are highly affected by environmental factors. Research indicated that the inclusion of corn in cow diets will increase BW. Also contributing to higher BW were cold temperatures in the winter of 2002/2003. The University of Nebraska conducted a three-year-study to research and evaluate effects of high and low temperatures during winter months on calves out of 384 2-year-old heifers. Average BW increased by 11 lbs. when temperatures were colder. The results agree with other studies that show calves born in the southern U.S. compared with calves that are born in the northern U.S. Weather plays an important role in BW and calving difficulty. We have adjusted the calving ease scores accordingly, taking into consideration what the calf ratioed on BW, pedigree and BW EPD. FEEDING: Feeding arrangements are available on all coming Two-year-old Bulls will be fed at a charge of $2.50 per day. We will feed your purchases from sale day until you are ready to pick them up or we will deliver them in the Spring with our spring bull deliveries. If you bulls stay here until spring and you give us ample notice we will have you purchases semen tested before we deliver your two year old bulls. BREEDING SOUNDNESS EVALUATION: Semen evaluations will be performed in November before the sale. We fully guarantee that these bulls will pass the Breeding Soundness Evaluation before the breeding season in 2012 if the bulls are managed properly. We ask for your understanding if a bull does not pass. Sometimes bulls that have passed do not pass later for various reason. Our ability to replace a two year old bull that has failed a semen evaluation is limited but we will do our best to make sure you are satisfied. If you have any questions regarding Breeding Soundness Evaluation, feel free to call Craig or Dr. Dean Christensen at the Ashley Vet Clinic. WEIGHTS: Birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights, and all other measurements are taken at appropriate times to produce sound and accurate comparisons within contemporary groups. We contemporary group our Red Angus calves based on the age of our cows. Calves out of two-year-old dams, three-year-old dams, and main cowherd are all separate management groups and therefore are separate contemporary groups. WEANING WEIGHTS: All naturally born calves born at Bieber Red Angus Ranch are raised without creep. We feel that this helps us select and breed for dams that have milking ability and sound udders. ET calves are on creep feed to express their full genetic potential. INSURANCE: Livestock insurance will be available on sale day.

Sale Information AIR TRANSPORTATION: Aberdeen is serviced by Delta Airlines. Huron and Pierre are serviced by Great Lakes Airlines which is affiliated with United and Frontier airlines. INTERNET & ABSENTEE BIDDING: We would prefer for each of you to be in attendance on sale day. Realistically, we know that there will be some scheduling conflicts and distance limitations. In these cases we have arranged for you to be able to participate in the sale on an absentee basis with a conference call dedicated to bidding. We will have available one phone line and can accommodate 20 to 30 bidders. Please call prior to the sale and register as a prospective buyer. We have limited capabilities to bid by phone during the sale. Your best option is to be in attendance at the sale, but if you cannot attend or feel more comfortable bidding yourself, we need to warn you of complications in the past with phone service such as the volume and the rapid pace at which our sale moves. If we handle the bids for you, they will be done in the strictest of confidence. YOU PICK ’EM ET HEIFER This group of ET heifers is one of the best we have ever produced. We have paired the heifers and the buyer will have the option of picking one heifer. The other will go back in to our replacement heifer pen. We hope to get together with the buyer in a half dozen years or so and find out if they knew something we didn’t. We are not sure which ones are better and would prefer that they all stayed. Good luck hunting for the best one.

The choice between lot 1 and 2 sells. The Adelle cowline has been very influential in our herd in the past 10 years. Lot 1 is a maternal sister to Adelle 8958, Lot 28, the dam of Makin Hay, Rough Rider and Outrider. A couple of years ago when Dale Phares and Klee Watchous, from WildCat Creek, were looking to gather up some of the best genetics in the Red Angus breed they purchased both of the 8958 ET daughters we had that year. They were bred and delivered and we were pretty disappointed to see those heifers leave the herd. Lot 1 is in the top 15% of the breed for WW and YW growth and yet the top 20% for BW. Her sibs sell as lots 4, 6, 21, 26.
The choice between lot 1 and 2 sells. Lot 2 is maternal sister to Adelle 8958, lot 28 and a daughter of lot 29, Adelle 7226. This also makes her a maternal sister to Makin Hay 9913, Rough Rider 10712 and Outrider W388. A pedigree like that sets her up pretty good to start with. This pair of heifers are both sired by Chief Sequoya R336. We found this bull because of his curvebending data but really like the group of bred heifers that we have here at the ranch. We are excited about calving them next spring. These daughters are out of one of our best cowlines and really give the new owner a jumpstart on new genetics. The choice between lot 5 and 6 sells. Lot 6 sibs sell as lots 3, 4, 21 and 26. This Adelle 8958 daughter is a pretty unique package. LSF Expectation 6034S has some great numbers leading the way on carcass traits. This lot puts WW and YW growth in the to 15%, Milk and Marbling in the top 5%, REA in the top 25% and BW in the top 35%. At Ludvigson last spring Expectation sire, Enterprise’s daughters came out on top. This Expectation daughter will likely follow the same track.
The choice between lot 5 and 6 sells. We chose to flush lot 5’s dam as one of the best Black Red Angus cows we own. We infused these genetics for the carcass advancement they offer. This heifer calf has great potential as a female with Marbling in the top 1% and REA in the top 3%. The Tilly cowline is no stranger to our program with 43 producing dams in our herd. This cowline does a lot of things right, hence the reason they are by far one of the most dominant lines we have.

We identified this dam as a one of the best dams in the offering and proceeded to get her bought. In 2010 we sold a group of ET sons that were very stout. They average $5500 and sold to some of our most discriminating commercial customer going to Fraser’s in CO, Morrow’s in NM, and Harrison’s in SD. These cattle really have the kind and the Rough Rider daughters have just finished weaning and look like they are going to be solid cows.

Growing in a shrinking industry... Empty bunk space and record calf prices are the codependent children of the continued decline of our nation’s cowherd numbers. So why does one breed continue to grow? Red Angus saw modest (2.5%) growth in recorded calf crop for the year ending June 30, 2011, which gave the breed its two largest calf crops in history, all occurring between 2008 and 2011. 2011 also established a new historical high for the transfer of Red Angus animals to new owners – which was lead by the transfer of registered Red Angus bulls to new owners. The new record shows demand for Red Angus genetics increased 7.4% versus the prior fiscal year. Commercial demand for added value programs, as demonstrated by enrollments in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) continued a growth rate that has averaged 13.1% over the last four years. The FCCP was the U.S.
beef industry’s first Process Verified Program, and is now in its third decade of providing source verification to the ranch of origin as well as age verification and traceability to a minimum of 50% Red Angus bloodlines. What is it about Red Angus? Why does this breed maintain the accelerated growth that began in the early to mid 90s? First, a commitment to provide ranchers with the best objectively described cattle, i.e, reliable genetic predictions for traits of economic relevance. All of which stems from the breed’s 16 year commitment to Total Herd Reporting (THR), which requires performance data for registration, and reporting the annual production of every female in members’ herds including dead calves, open cows, - not just the ones good enough to register. Secondly, the breed is equally committed to the development and service of commercial marketing programs, such as the FCCP, which expands market access and provides premiums to help ranchers reap the full return for their investment in superior Red Angus genetics.

8958 is one of the best cows we have ever owned. That would probably be enough said but there is so much to be said it is impossible to stop. Her first son is Bieber Makin Hay who has done an outstanding job across the breed. Rough Rider is proving in his own right to have progeny that will excel in the show ring and in the pasture. Outrider’s calves look like they are going to make a name for him and be super easy calving to boot. We are very confident that this cow will make anyone a great place to build a herd. She has two daughters in the herd that have done an outstanding job. We have continued to flush her so many times through the years. She has a bit of a hitch in her step that is hardly noticeable from a hip injury while being flushed but has flushed well with 15 progeny and more coming in the pipeline. When we lined these donors up for the sale we really thought this cow should be first. 7226 has done a great job including being the dam of lot 28. One of her best calves was a stud right up till the moment he got hit by a semi. We think we have a couple of sons that if they jump through all the hoops on test will be ones to beat. She comes with a little age but still looks like she could make it happen for several more years. Her proven prepotency comes with a pretty good embryo production history.

We flushed this cow in 2006 and really like the results. She is a wide based cow. Our cowboss Craig Howard really thought we should flush her again and we probably should have. She will bring in the big ones every fall supported by the fact that her WW growth is in the top 8% of the breed.

Bieber red angus bull development
We have learned a lot in 40 years of producing bulls customers come back for, like how to stack the right genetics to produce efficient, profitable cattle. The truth is, there is a lot more to it than mating the right cows to the right bulls. Every year we have customers tell us how our bulls stand up better compared to bulls from other breeders. We are very proud of how they stand up under reasonable conditions. Cattle feeding is 1/3 skill, 1/3 science and 1/3 art. Feed too much and cattle get fat and will not hold up for our customers. Feed wrong and you lose out on a bull expressing his full genetic potential. We try to feed our bulls similar to how we believe our customers will feed their calves. We start them on a 41meg ration (expected gain 1.5 to 2 ADG) and keep them on it for the first 45 days. That prepares the rumen flora to handle a higher meg ration. The bulls are next taken up to a 46meg ration (expected gain 2.25 to 2.7 ADG) for three weeks. At that time they are moved up to a 52meg ration (expected gain 3.2 to 3.5 ADG). We keep the bulls on that ration until they are scanned and at that time they are moved back down to the 46 meg and kept there through the sale until delivery. We make a concerted effort to feed our bulls feed stuffs raised on our ranch and feed we feel that our customers will have access to. Our ration consists of alfalfa hay, grass hay, barley silage, high moisture corn, wet distillers grain and mineral. We try to feed a least-cost ration. When you look through the catalog you will see many bulls gaining between 3 and 4 pounds per day. They are not under fed. When you walk through the pens on sale day the bull are not fat. The bulls are in good condition with plenty of muscle. We can talk about genetics all day, but if the bulls are over fed they just won’t stand up in the long run. The truth is it just makes sense to buy 43 years of experience.

Our Thoughts on the Value of Bulls Bull Purchase Price
DELIVERY POLICY:
Purchasing bulls is a critical management decision. The following table was developed assuming: annual bull maintenance costs of $350 (operating costs plus a 10 percent risk of death loss), a 90 percent calf crop, and a salvage value of $1,100. Several conclusions can be reached from this data: Losing a bull in the first or second year is extremely costly on a per-calf basis and the loss overwhelms most of the genetic potential that might be derived from that sire’s limited influence in the herd. When possible, bulls should be servicing 25 or more females per season to allow the enterprise the flexibility to spend more on each bull purchased. Determining the price to be spent on a bull depends on the marketing target and the bull’s ability to generate an advantage in excess of the additional cost per calf as purchase price increases. For example, a bull purchased for $3,000 and used in a 1:25 scenario for four years must contribute more than $5.56 per calf across all four calf crops to warrant the additional price as compared to a $2,500 bull. The national sire evaluation system allows producers to make reasonable comparisons between bulls and groups of bulls by estimating expected progeny differences for traits such as weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass weight. These estimates can then be assigned economic value by applying market prices. Some breed associations are now providing additional index values that are reasonable estimates of composition traits such as carcass value, maternal merit and feedlot performance. We often get asked how much should we spend on a bull and the above article and commentary provide some insight to that question.
Many people tell us they can’t afford to spend much on their bulls. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The cost of running a good bull is the same cost as running a bad bull. A good bull will easily add 30-50 pounds to your average weaning weight. Even if the bull is only mated to 25 cows and you get a 95% calf crop and a modest $1 per pound value, then the good bull will net $712.50 to $1187.50 per year above an average bull. With an average useful life of 4 years and an equal residual sales price, you can pay $2800 to $4750 more for the good bull over an average bull without a loss of profitability. This is before you consider that current prices on weaned calves are above the prices listed, good bulls last longer on average, have better resale and are often mated to more than 25 cows. Most operations would improve their bottom line by breeding to higher quality bulls. Comments from Bieber Red Angus Ranch: Cattle-Fax points out that $500 more on a bull means that the bull needs to contribute $5.56 per calf across 4 calf crops to warrant the additional price. If you do the math on a 600lb calf at $1.40, it only takes a little over 5 pounds per calf to break-even on the high priced bull. We have consistently found the real value of high priced bulls comes in added value to the heifers calves. Often this past fall and winter the difference between replacement quality heifers and average heifers was $10 to $20 dollars per hundred weight at the same auction on the same day. We have a customer that decided to support a breeder with a very short history and purchased two bulls. His bull battery contained three bulls from Bieber Red Angus Ranch and two from the young breeder. The herd runs with one bull per breeding pasture. This customer found out that the Bieber Red Angus Ranch bulls gave him an average 60lbs more per calf than the other breeder’s bulls. This producer told us “I am tired of helping everyone else. From now on, I will be back to buy Bieber bulls to help myself. Your bulls are just bred better.” In recent comments in 2011 from a producer that works with his family he commented that his father had refused to buy bulls and rented Angus bulls from a local small producer. This producer buys bull from the upper end of our program and others. This producer managed his cow and his father’s cow very similarly but bred each of their own cows in separate pastures. When it came time to sell calves in the last fall the calves the producers calves weighed 250lbs more than his father’s. His hard work and diligence in paid dividends to the tune of $375 per calf. This operation spends between $5000 to $10,000 per bull and place a lot of value on good genetics. Just one more fact to support the case for better bulls. Land Grant Universities have often shown that being a “low cost” producer is a key to survival in the cow/calf business. Ironically, the same research has shown that buying good bulls is the only area where low cost producers spend more money than high cost producers. The original reason we like the Cattle-Fax article was that we want our customers to understand what taking care of a young bull the first year, and every year after, is worth it. It can be very costly if one loses a bull in the first year. Bulls really should be separated from the cows to reduce competition for resources. They require some added care throughout the year to function like a fine-tuned athlete for your breeding season. We can’t stress enough that the cost per calf weaned will significantly decrease if bulls have proper care during the off season, particularly in the first year.

Coming 2 Year-Old red angus bulls About the two-year-olds: The two-year-old ADG and WDA data comes from a period starting from the time they were weaned in October to when yearling weights where taken in the spring. These bulls generally have a much longer gain test than our yearling bulls. The ration is designed for the bulls to gain about 2.75 lbs. per day. Developing bulls in this fashion ensures that bulls remain sound and have superior longevity. In June they are turned out to grass with no supplementation other than salt and mineral. In late September they are brought into lots and worked up to a 46 NEg ration. This ration ensures bulls remain sound and have superior longevity. Our rations are a combination of wet distillers grain, hay (blended to 11% to 12% protein), and high moisture corn.

We didn’t know a lot about his sire when we saw him a few years ago at Hawkeye West but liked him right away. Then we had a look at his data and really liked him. We have used Rough Rider extensively for his moderated size and thickness, which he consistently passes on to his progeny. His calves have a lot of shape and muscle with lots of thickness over their top, combined with a predisposition for moderate mature size. Glossary of terms EPD: Expected Progeny Difference. The expected difference (usually pounds) in performance of a bull’s progeny when those progeny are compared to progeny of a sire with an EPD of zero for the trait in question. EPD values are relative. They do not indicate absolute levels of performance. Rather, they can be used to compare expected progeny performance of different bulls.
ME EPD: Maintenance Energy. Used to select parents that will produce low consuming replacement females with lower energy requirements.
Acc: (ACCURACY): A measure of the reliability of an EPD. Accuracy values are reported as decimal numbers between zero and one. Values closer to one indicate larger amounts of available information and greater certainty that a bull’s EPD will not change significantly as more progeny information becomes available.
CEM EPD: Calving Ease Total Maternal (percent). The probability that an animal’s daughters will calve unassisted as twoyear-olds.
CED EPD: Calving Ease Direct (percent). The probability that an animal’s calves will be born without assistance to a two-yearold cow. BW EPD: Birth Weight (pounds). An animal’s expected progeny difference for birth weight of a calf. Progeny of sires with lower birth weight EPD values will generally be born with less calving difficulty. WW EPD: Weaning Weight (pounds). An animal’s expected progeny difference for 205-day, mature dam equivalent weaning weight. A sire’s weight EPD is an indication of growth to weaning. It does not indicate milk production. YW EPD: Yearling Weight (pounds). An animal’s expected progeny difference for 365-day, mature dam equivalent yearling weight. The yearling weight EPD is a measure of growth from birth to a year of age.
HPG EPD: The profitability that an animal’s daughters will conceive to calve as two year olds.
Stay EPD: Stayability (percent). The probability that after an animal’s daughters enter a herd, they will remain productive until the age of six. The EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. MAR EPD: Carcass Marbling Score (score 2-10). Higher values tend to be associated with higher USDA quality grades on slaughter progeny. REA EPD: Carcass Rib Eye Area (sq. inches). The expected different in rib eye area measured between the 12th and 13th rib of a sire’s progeny. Higher values may be an indication of higher lean meat yields on slaughter progeny. ADG: The average daily gain during the test period beginning in late September—ending in mid January. WDA: Weight per day of age from birth.
Milk EPD: Maternal Milk (pounds). The expected difference (due to milk production alone) in weaning weight of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero EPD for maternal milk: Maternal milk EPD values are measured in pounds of calf weaned to indicate milking ability. TM EPD: Weaning Weight Total Maternal (pounds). The expected overall difference in weaning weight of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero EPD for total maternal. The total maternal EPD is a measure of both growth and milking ability and is an indicator of the size of a calf a bull’s daughter will wean.

The Playbook for profit minded producers... With the goal of simplifying ranchers’ profit equation, Red Angus continues blazing new trails in the pursuit of providing commercial producers with concise genetic predictions. Based on the concept of Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs), producers are equipped with tools that allow for selection on traits that directly impact profitability. These tools simplify the selection process, and arm producers with the ability to better identify range bulls whose genetics will more positively impact profitability. With a long standing commitment to better serve this continually changing beef industry, Red Angus has prepared for tomorrow’s challenges through

New & Improved Genetic Predictions (EPDs). Red Angus has combined databases with the American Simmental Association in order to simplify producers’ use of crossbreeding programs by supplying them with true multi-breed EPDs. Additionally, with the recent changes to carcass value Red Angus has added Carcass Weight and Yield Grade to its arsenal of ERTs. EPDs are the most reliable predictors of an animal’s true genetic merit. As the only major beef breed to mandate Total Herd Reporting (THR), Red Angus EPDs have the built in advantage of being calculated from 15 years of complete contemporary group data. EPDs have “fast-tracked” beef cattle improvement and removed much of the guesswork associated with selecting range bulls.

EPDs: What, Why & How?
EPDs predict differences in progeny performance, and are calculated from comparisons within Contemporary Groups. (A group of calves that were born in the same year, calving season, herd, and are of the same sex and were fed and managed alike.) EPDs have a clear advantage over less sophisticated predictors such as actual weights or within-herd ratios. Actual and adjusted weights are affected by environment, nutrition and management. Contemporary group ratios are an improvement, as they account for these environmental variables. However, they do not incorporate comparative performance data on related individuals in countless herds throughout the country. Red Angus EPDs account for these sources of variation in performance as well as mating bias (which cows were bred to which bulls). The power of these genetic predictions is multiplied by including every contemporary group from herds in the entire Red Angus breed.
Absolute performance is not predictable... Relative performance is. For Example: Suppose your old herd bull has a yearling weight EPD of 50. You buy a new bull with a yearling weight EPD of 70. How much will the new bull boost your calves’ yearling weights?
Multi-Breed EPD Revelation – made possible through collaboration with American Simmental Association. This advancement incorporates a true multi-breed EPD model which accurately accounts for variation in animal performance due to heterosis, as well as accurately accounting for additive genetic differences between breeds. This enhancement enables Red Angus to provide reliable EPDs on all animals in the database, regardless of breed composition.
The Answer... We cannot predict how much performance will change from one year to the next because of varying environmental conditions (rainfall, temperature, available feedstuffs, etc). However, we do know this: the calves raised in the same contemporary group sired by your new bull will have the genetics to weigh an average of 20 pounds more at 365 days of age as compared to calves sired by the old bull.
Understanding ACCURACY
Red Angus EPDs are often presented with a corresponding accuracy value, which measures the strength of the relationship between the genetic prediction (EPD) and true genetic value. Accuracies are reported as a decimal number from zero to one. As accuracy value approaches 1.0, the EPD is "accurately" or closely estimating the true genetic merit of an animal for a given trait. Although low accuracy EPDs are less reliable when compared to those of proven sires, independent research demonstrates EPDs to be the most meaningful indicator of animals’ true genetic merit. While "perfect" accuracies of 1.0, are never achieved, many heavily used Red Angus sires have accuracies greater than 0.9 (some as high as .99).

More Data + Cleaner Data Equals the Industry’s Most Reliable EPDs Red Angus history was made in 2010... Through a shared vision of ensuring producer profitability, Red Angus and American Simmental Association (ASA) combined their datasets for EPD production. Combining data is nothing new to Red Angus. For the last 8 years, Red Angus has pooled their data with the Canadian Angus Association (CAA). The result of these collaborations is a true multi-breed database with over 9 million animals...Over a million of which are common to both Red Angus and Simmental. Why go to the effort to merge different breeds’ datasets? To provide higher accuracy EPDs which allow our customers to make better informed breeding decisions. The strength of this database is magnified through the use of Total Herd Reporting (THR), which eliminates reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. In 1995, Red Angus implemented mandatory THR, which requires the annual production of every Red Angus cow and the performance of every calf raised through weaning to be reported. Shortly after, ASA and CAA followed suit with optional THR - which allows members to choose if they wish to participate in THR. Reporting bias is demonstrated in Tables 1 & 2. (Ratios are used in the example since they reflect the variation between an individual weight and the group average. used to calculate EPDs.) When only the top three calves are reported, the ratios are negatively affected for all calves (Table 2), because the group average is raised. Obviously, incorrectly raising the group average will incorrectly reduce the ratio and incorrectly report progeny data on representative sires. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. Cow Herd Building Profit starts at Reproduction! Placing selection pressure on traits that will have a direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, carcasses sold in the meat) can certainly increase your revenue on a per calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cow herd building traits. Calving Ease Direct (CED) - predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two year-old heifers. Producers want live calves - born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by nongenetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus’ CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers - pregnant heifers. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) - predicts the probability of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own. Red Angus' CEM EPD offers the industry's most reliable prediction to address that concern. It includes not only the predisposition for a female to calve unassisted, but also her contribution to her calf's traits (birth weight, calf shape, etc.) that make it more likely to be born unassisted. Stayability (STAY) - predicts the probability that a bull's daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age. University studies have shown the breakeven point on replacement heifers is five to six years of age. Females that don't stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to a higher rate of replacement females that producers must retain instead of being cash cropped.

Accounting for 30 - 40% of the annual cow costs, requirements for Maintenance Energy is typically the single largest expense of cow/calf operations. Red Angus’ ME EPD allows producers to select bulls whose daughters will require less feed to maintain their body weight and condition; thus, increasing profitability.

How does this affect me? The energy content of average quality range forage is approximately 0.86 Mcal per pound of dry matter. If a sire has an ME EPD of +20 Mcal/month his offspring will require approximately 23 lbs (20/0.86) more dry matter per month than offspring of the sire with an ME EPD of 0. Magnify that difference over 12 months and 100 cows: you’ll need another 14 tons of feed, or to get rid of a few cows.
ME EPD helps ensure environmental fit. Cattle run in all types of environments, and each has different available feedstuffs. When cattle have higher maintenance energy requirements than their environment will support, producers must supplement feed, decrease stocking rate or accept decreasing body condition scores of their animals, which can adversely affect reproductive performance.
How is ME EPD calculated? There are three components of ME EPD: Mature Weight, Milk, and Body Condition Score (BCS). To calculate ME EPD, Red Angus breeders collect mature cow weights (taken when calves are weaned) and BCS (cows should be scored when weighed). The Mature Weights are adjusted to 5 years of age, and to a common BCS of 5. It is essential that all cows in the same contemporary group are scored by the same person. BCS plays an important role in calculating Red Angus' ME EPD as it is essential that mature weight be standardized to body condition.
Maintenance "Curve Benders" While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME).
Think of it this way: A BCS 7 cow that weighs 1200 lbs is really a "FAT" 1100 lb cow. Likewise, a BCS 3 cow that weighs 1200 lbs is really a "Skinny” 1350 lb cow.

The Expense side of ranchers’ profit equation Profit equals revenue minus expenses. Select for ME EPD in conjunction with revenue trait EPDs to ensure feed costs don't get out of line with selection for greater performance and production. Birth Weight EPD (BW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus' Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight EPD (YW) predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk EPD (MILK) predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal's daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. Total Maternal EPD (TM) predicts the rancher's actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal's daughters. TM includes the daughters milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf's weaning weight EPD. The formula for TM EPD is: TM EPD = Milk EPD + 1/2 (WW EPD)

Bred in Carcass Value... Red Angus is preferred among producers who retain ownership of their calf crop. This demand is driven from consistent feedyard performance combined with reaping premiums from value-based grids. Furthering the mission of providing genetic predictions that directly impact producer profitability, Red Angus recently added Carcass Weight (CW) and Yield Grade (YG) to its arsenal of ERTs. Incorporation of these selection tools have the power to take your profitability to the next level. Marbling Score (MARB) predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. Yield Grade (YG) predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. Carcasss Weight (CW ) predicts differences in hot carcass weight and is expressed in pounds. Because Red Angus’ CW EPD is a multi-trait model which includes birth, weaning, and yearling weight data, the prediction is not subject to culling bias. Thus, it provides a more reliable EPD as compared to only using actual carcass weights. This computation allows for the use of weights taken on ~57,000 animals per year as compared to only ~1,500 animals per year with actual carcass weight observations. Increased Carcass Weight tends to detrimentally affect Yield Grade; the calculation of which also includes Rib Eye Area and Fat Thickness. Rib Eye Area (REA) predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness.

Bull Selection Simplified. Follow these simple steps to match bull power to your program’s goals. 1) Know your target markets: feeder calves, yearlings, value based grids, replacement females. 2) Have a true appraisal of how close your cow herd is to those targets; always understanding your cows have to continue to live and reproduce in your environment. 3) Identify bulls whose EPDs predict the ability to move your cow herd in the right direction for the traits required to hit your market endpoint.
What is your breeding objective? 1. Building a cow herd? ■ Combine low expense traits (ME EPD) with acceptable revenue traits to breed efficiency into the cow herd. ■ Improve fertility with selection pressure on HPG EPDs. ■ Sleep through the night by selecting high CEM EPDs. ■ Improve longevity and lower replacement rates by selecting higher than average STAY EPDs.
2. Breeding virgin heifers? ■ Select for CED EPD as the most meaningful predictor of calving ease. Red Angus’ CED combines birthweight and other factors

3. Selling calves or yearlings? ■ Heavier payweights may be achieved by selecting higher WW EPDs, but...make sure heavier is what you want. Heavier weaning
weights mean heavier payweights for calf feds. However, for those who background their calves, too much weaning weight could translate into yearlings that are too heavy when they enter the feed yard, and finish too heavy. Overshooting performance goals can be just as detrimental as falling short. ■ Enhance your reputation - improve traits that impact feeder profits, such as carcass traits and post-weaning gain (YW).
4. Retaining Ownership? ■ Docile and fast starting, Red Angus are easy to start on feed and keep on feed. ■ Balance YW EPD of potential bulls with the existing cow herd to pinpoint needed improvement for post weaning gains. ■ Increase payweight with selection for improved CW EPD.
5. Selling on a Grid? ■ Fine-tune marbling (MARB), rib eye area (REA), and back fat (FAT) EPDs to target value based grids. ■ Target YG 1 & 2 premiums and avoid YG 4 discounts by applying selection pressure on YG EPD. ■ Optimize carcass weights to increase payweights while avoiding discounts for heavy weight carcasses. ■ Balance Carcass EPDs against existing cow herd genetics: • Cowherds of higher continental influence may require additional selection pressure on marbling EPD to improve quality grade. • High percentage British cowherds typically benefit from selection pressure to reduce YG and increase CW.

BIDDING DISPUTES: The auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash, the right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the ranch. RETAINED INTEREST: We are retaining 1/2 interest in all bulls in the sale. We are selling the remaining 1/2 interest, full possession, and full salvage value on these bulls. This option gives Bieber Red Angus Ranch the option to collect, use and market semen from the bull and does not restrict the purchaser from doing the same. This collection, unless agreed otherwise, would be done at the expense of Bieber Red Angus Ranch, at the buyers convenience. Also at the time of purchase, the highest bidder on a retained interest bull may elect to purchase exclusive semen rights for 100% of the purchase price in addition to the purchased price on retained bulls. If a buyer elects to purchase exclusive semen rights, Bieber Red Angus Ranch interest then becomes in herd use only, but Bieber Red Angus Ranch retains all rights to use the bull within their herd. SEMEN RIGHTS: Buyers receive semen rights proportional to the interest purchased. If you purchase a 1/2 interest then you are entitled to 1/2 of the semen collections at cost provided that you indicate you want semen prior to collection. We intend to collect some of the bulls in the sale and sample them in our herd. We will cooperate with the buyer in collection of the bull. We prefer to collect most bulls after the first season of use and we will contact the buyer when we intend to collect the bull at a time convenient for the buyer. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. A.I. Certificates for females sold bred artificially to bulls not owned by the seller are the buyers responsibility to obtain. HEALTH: All cattle will have official health certificates and will sell guaranteed exported to Canada. Canadian health certificates will be charged at cost on animals selling under $2000. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Changes of information contained in this catalog relating to the animals offered for the sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Errors discovered in the catalog will be corrected by announcements at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in this catalog. BREEDER’S GUARANTEE: 1. All animals are guaranteed breeders, with the exception of: a) calves under twelve months of age; b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale (in cases of animals shown after purchase, the breeding guarantee, if any, shall be such as agreed upon between Seller and Buyer; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Purchaser. 2. Bulls are guaranteed breeders if not allowed to run with the herd until at least 14 months of age. Any bull which either: a) settles 1/3 or more of the healthy cows he serves; b) is the sire of 20 or more animals; or c) settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any 6 month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 2 of the section of these sale terms and conditions entitled “Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment”) shall be considered a breeder. Any guarantee with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be by separate agreement between Buyer and Seller. Open females have not been served and are so guaranteed.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS IDENTIFICATION: Each animal carries a readable tattoo. Tag numbers on the cattle correspond with lot and tattoo numbers in this catalog. Purchaser agrees to use full name of animal in advertising and on stall cards at shows. OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six months of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, with the exception of claims involving defects or parentage. 2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the Seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements of the Sellers state. The Seller shall be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder, the Seller shall, at the option of the Buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or grant the Buyer a credit for use on any products marketed by the Seller. Such credit of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expense incurred for transporting an animal claimed to be a non-breeder shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for the transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place. If the Seller proves the animal is a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the Purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expense incurred for transportation.
4. If a female sold as “served” proves not to be in calf, or if a female sold as “pasture-bred” proves not to be in calf, the Seller only guarantees such female to the breeder. 5. If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the Purchaser may return the animal to the farm of the Seller prior to calving for a credit of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever is acceptable to the Purchaser. It shall be the obligation of the Seller to bear any expense incurred for transportation. LIABILITY: Neither owners, sale managers, clerks nor anyone connected with the sale assumes responsibility, legal, or otherwise for damages of any kind. CONTRACT: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold. IMPLIED WARRANTY: Except for those stated in the terms and conditions, there are no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold in this auction. The warranties set forth in terms and conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied and the remedies proved therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any part claiming through buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided and all other obligations or liabilities
3. If a female sold as “safe in calf” proves not to be in calf, the Purchaser may receive service from the bull previously used, if available, or if the bull is not available, the Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller. Any adjustment provided for herein shall absolve the Seller from further liability, except in case such female proves to be a nonbreeder. If a female represented as “safe in calf” at time of sale to a certain bull proves to have been bred to a different bull, the Seller shall be obligated to take a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller (adjustments shall not be considered to a breeding fee or an allocation of the purchase price to any unborn calf). Any expenses incurred for transportation shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for the transportation costs in excess to the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place.

Cowherd Building Traits Profit starts at Reproduction! Placing selection pressure on traits that will have a direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, carcasses sold in the meat) can certainly increase your revenue on a per calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cow herd building traits. Profitable reproduction can be boiled down to success in these four Economically Relevant Traits: Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expected progeny difference of calves being born unassisted from two year-old heifers. The Red Angus CED model accounts for contemporary group birth weight differences and calving ease scores. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expected progeny difference of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): The expected progeny difference of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Stayability (STAY): The expected progeny difference of a bull's daughters remaining in the herd until at least six years of age. Females that don't stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to a higher rate of replacement females that the rancher can’t cash crop.
