iving in Kansas City, home of the KC Royals, it’s too easy to make a beef marketing analogy with the mediocre performance of our beloved Royals season thus far. The team has gone from a half-game out of first place in the American League Central Division to dead last after sub-par performances for a couple of weeks. Like beef industry market swings, thankfully, it’s a long season and slow and steady almost always produces a winner in the end. Recently, monthly contributor to BEEF magazine, Harlan Hughes, discussed beef cattle profitability, or lack of, based on a three-year marketing trend. The analysis confirmed what our industry analysts have been telling us for a while. Historically, beef cattle inventory numbers have ebbed and flowed since 1957, which was one of the low points in the cycle at 90 plus million head. The largest increase in numbers was seen in the 1970s as inventory numbers shot up to more than 130 million head. The near six decades since 1957 have shown a downward

little control over. Trade policy is incredibly complicated and laborious and the results aren’t immediately noticeable. Yet today, the absence of global trade is potentially more devastating to the beef industry in America than any historical environmental or geographic “market buster”. Although the U.S. is ranked as the fourth largest beef exporter, we are arguably the largest exporter of high quality beef. A focus on improving beef quality through science and technology has enabled the cow-calf producer to moderate cow size, increase weaning and yearling weights and improve the quality of the end product in the meat case. The Hughes article discussed the fact that more heifers were being held for replacements. It’s plausible to assume the 1.2 percent increase in heifers held for replacements will be genetically better than the cows they are replacing and have the potential to produce even higher quality beef. Industry analysts use many metrics to forecast the future

Hughes reminds us of the historical cycle dynamics that have moved the needle up or down. Factors such as drought and disease have been consistently experienced throughout the history of meat animal protein production and influenced the national cattle inventory. The inventory numbers are important and this recent report is even more relevant as we consider the reality that we are producing far more beef from fewer cows. Expanding our borders and forging relationships with new trading partners around the world have been a keystone in sustaining demand for more beef as our output increases. Possibly the most undervalued market dynamic for commercial cow-calf producers in America is understanding global trade. According to numbers reported early in 2017, Brazil, India, Australia and the U.S. are projected to account for 73 percent of global exports. The competition for market share is fierce and, like drought and disease, are factors beef producers have

markets and one factor remains constant. The potential to increase the U.S. market share, domestically as well as globally, is connected to continued quality improvement. We have the tools and the intellectual capacity to stay on a steady course toward improving the end product with every calf crop. Cow-calf producers using Charolais to influence their herds have unprecedented options to manage risk through genetic improvement. Cattle feeders recognize the market demand for higher quality beef and are implementing better feed and finishing management strategies. From the ground up, progressive cow-calf producers and industry partners, cattle feeders and processors are doing their part to make sure the consumer has affordable choices for high quality beef. It’s a good thing the success of the beef industry isn’t measured like baseball, by a final score after playing 162 games. Our successes are measured by profit and loss, market access and consumer acceptance over decades and generations.

Female Inventories Now Due

AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

WHR Inventories received between May 1st through May 31st – $20 per female; after June 1st – $32 per female. The WHR program includes a free registration and transfer for the 2017 born calf. The PPR program is available at no-charge; however you will pay registration and transfer fees on each calf. Enrollment is available online. Click into “My Inventory” to get started. Junior National Entry Deadlines

The 2017 AIJCA Junior National Show & Leadership Conference will be held in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 18-23. Early Registration/Ownership deadline is May 1 and Late Registration/Ownership deadline with late fees is May 1. All entries must be completed online at www.CharolaisUSA.com. Record your 2017 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name. 10 

Females sold bred must have all breeding information included to complete the transfer. Service date and appropriate sire signatures are necessary. Dispose of Animals

Dispose of animals you no longer have by using the online system. The disposal button is at the bottom of the “Quick Look” screen. DO NOT dispose of bulls still being used, regardless of their status. DO NOT dispose of animals you are selling with papers. AICA DNA Requirements

AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail.

Features of the Online Registration System

AICA’s online system has several newly enhanced features. Log in with your breeder number and password and you’ll find additional reports listed under the “My Reports” tab. The new Sire/Dam Performance Summary gives options to print lifetime records on individual animals or all active sires and or dams. You also have the option to get reports by calving year. Many other reports are available including performance reports and ultrasound reports. Ultrasound barn sheets can be generated using the report function. You have the option to print barn sheets by calving year or by individual animals. Printing quick copies of individual certificates is another useful enhancement of the “reports” function.

AICA has launched a new service that provides the framework to allow on-farm herd management computer software to exchange data with the AICA office. By using this service, breeders can avoid entering data in to both their local software and AICA’s online system. The software package would send AICA the data. If you wish to take advantage of this new service, ask your software vendor to contact AICA.

Action Taken 1. Lynde Jackson of Merrill Lynch, provided a review of AIJCF financials. As of December 31, 2016, the AIJCF funds total $760,619.85. The total available amount for 2017-18 scholarships is $34,459.53. 2. Kaitlyn Lewis representing the Nebraska Junior Charolais Association presented a request of funds from the Raymond Hicks Junior National Endowment for the 2017 Junior National Leadership Conference activities. 3. Bill Nottke moved to approve $4,088.90, the interest of the Raymond Hicks Junior National Endowment, for 2017 Junior National Leadership conference activities. Neil Orth seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 4. Nottke moved that the AIJCF Board of Trustees recommend Larry Lehman to serve an AIJCF Board of Trustees 3 year term. Lewis seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 5. Meeting adjourned.

Action Taken 1. Neil Orth addressed the committee regarding the history of commercial programs at AICA. He presented the concept of having Listening and Learning Sessions across the country. Discussion followed. He introduced Brett Spader from the National Center for Beef Excellence who presented details regarding the possibility of organizing Listen & Learning sessions for AICA. 2. Ty Eschenbaum moved the committee recommend to the board that they move ahead with the concept of Listening & Learning sessions organized by NCBE. Naomi Farmer seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 3. Meeting adjourned.

Action Taken 1. Sally Northcutt reviewed the Spring 2017 National Cattle Evaluation counts. She also updated the committee and gallery on the progress being made in using the single step genetic evaluation and lower density genomic test. Discussion followed. 2. Discussion followed regarding the inclusion of Trait Leaders with all three evaluations. Richard Clark moved that staff report at the fall meeting regarding Trait Leaders with the additional genetic evaluation. Dennis Metzger seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 3. Northcutt gave an update on the University of Missouri’s sequencing project. 4. Northcutt also discussed the possibility of adding Docility EPDs. Marty Lewis moved AICA begin the process of collecting docility scores using the 1-6 scoring system at weaning. Gary Cooper seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 5. Northcutt showed the committee data we currently have on udder and teat scores. Northcutt will look at the data and provide an assessment for the committee in the fall. 6. Eschenbaum moved to change the AICA Sire/Dam Selector web interface to utilize EPD percentile ranking in search/selection procedure and to display percentile rank of animals selected. Schrader seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 7. Meeting adjourned.

Action Taken 1. Bill Nottke discussed with the committee the possibility of having a book created with the history of the Charolais Breed. David Hobbs addressed the idea of doing a Charolais history. Nottke suggested an ad hock committee of the executive committee and David Hobbs to look into the possibility of having a book made of the history of Charolais and report back to the committee at the fall meeting in Kansas City. 2. Meeting adjourned.

He discussed the Listening and Learning Sessions created in conjunction with the National Center for Beef Excellence (NCBE) Discussion followed. Nottke suggested the office would become more efficient by being paperless in the future. 3. Brett Spader spoke to the committee regarding the NCBE role. 4. Discussed the strengths of the Association and Board. 5. Silas Maxwell suggested that Long Range Planning encourage the development of the Charolais Foundation in the 2 – 5 year plan. 6. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. Obituary

John Gerald “Jerry” Taylor, Buffalo, Mo., entered into eternal life on March 27, 2017. Jerry was born on February 29, 1924, to John and Ada Forrester Taylor, one of seven siblings and the last survivor. Jerry married Mary Virginia Likes in 1948 in Macomb, Ill. They have three daughters: Pam and Gary Naylor, Buffalo, Mo.; Lana and Dr. Bruce Packard, Magnolia, Texas; and Melody and Mark Herman, Holland, Mich. They also have three grandchildren that Jerry adored: Brett and Brittney Naylor, Centralia, Mo., Sarah Packard, Magnolia, Texas, and Marie Packard, Des Moines, Iowa. Jerry also leaves behind countless friends who loved him and were part of his family. Jerry and Mary lived in the Bushnell-Prairie City, Illinois area until 1986. Jerry was a crop farmer and raised Purebred Shorthorn Cattle. Cattle was his love and he won many championships across the country showing his prized Shorthorn cattle. He also was a well-known and well-respected cattle judge, traveling the United States judging all breeds of cattle from the Cow Palace in San Francisco to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, to many state fairs and county fairs. In 1986, Jerry and Mary relocated to Buffalo, Mo., to be closer to daughter Pam and her family. Jerry continued his cattle judging and was often found helping local cattlemen. His walls in his home office are adorned with plaques and awards he has received throughout the years. To name a few, they include: University of Missouri Long-Term Commitment and Support of the MU Extension Program (2013), 2013 Pioneer Award of the Ozark Empire Fair Foundation, Charter Officer and Director of the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association, 2002 Long-Standing Service and Dedication to Missouri State Fair, National Livestock and Meat Board Director (1970-1973), Land of Lincoln Livestock Award 1987, Schuyler County Fair Honorary Director (1977), Illinois State Fair Board of Directors (1970–1986), and McDonough District Hospital (Macomb, Ill.) Board of Directors (1970- 1982). Anyone who met Jerry became a friend. He never met a stranger. He especially loved helping kids with livestock projects. Jerry always had a smile on his face and the most positive attitude. He never had a bad day. Jerry loved flowers because they were bright and cheery. But in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Shorthorn Association Foundation, c/o Bill Rasor, 1800 Lovers Leap, Van Alstyne, TX 75495. 20 

AICA Visits King Ranch

Charolais breeders from 15 states boarded a bus on March 25 to tour the historical King Ranch, Kingsville, Texas. The day started with a stop at the ranch’s Visitor Center where a bus was boarded for a guided historical perspective tour of the headquarters’ ranch. Attendees enjoyed a Cowboy Camphouse Barbeque and spent the afternoon in Kingsville visiting the King Ranch Museum and Saddle Shop while enjoying the quaint downtown area.

King Ranch Notes

• Larger than 23 countries and Rhode Island – 825,000 acres with ranching, oil and gas, farming, feedlot and hunting enterprises. 1,600 miles of fencing. • The “Running W” brand is a ranch trademark. No documentation on its history. • 30,000 head of cattle on the ranch – 23,000 cows, 1,000 bulls. 15,000 head capacity feedlot.

• Calved in 1920 on the Laurels Division of King Ranch, Monkey is the foundation sire of the Santa Gertrudis breed. • King Ranch is noted for Quarter Horses. Famous stallions include Old Sorrel, Little Richard, Wimpy and Mr San Peppy. Assault, the 1946 Thoroughbred Triple Crown winner was born and trained at the ranch. • Every generation of the family has a “Gertrude”. • Largest producer of oranges and sugarcane on Florida operations. • King Ranch was involved with the Charolais breed as early as the 1930’s with historical bulls including Neptune.

leadership conference session preview: CAPTURING AGRICULTURE ON CAMERA – Monday Session

Video has the power to take viewers to locations they may not have otherwise visited, introduce new points of view, and raise awareness about the science of agriculture. In this session, you will learn some tips and tricks for using mobile devices to record and edit interviews and footage about agricultural and environmental topics. Bring your tablets and smartphones to give it a try! This session will be taught by Dr. Jamie Loizzo, Assistant Professor of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Communication at the University of NebraskaLincoln. Loizzo has worked in television newsrooms in three states, developed educational videos for agricultural audiences and Purdue Extension, and served as project manager for a nationwide electronic field trip program. At UNL, Loizzo is beginning a program called Streaming Science to connect middle and high school students with university researchers through video, podcasts, and live webstreams produced by students in her courses. Raising Nebraska will be open daily during Junior National from 9 am to Noon and 1 to 4 pm.

In teams, you will practice your advocating skills while making a pizza in front of a panel talking about all aspects of agriculture. By the end you will have a pizza you will be able to eat! This session is taught by Elizabeth Janning, Extension Educator at Raising Nebraska.

HUSKER MOBILE BEEF LAB EXPERIENCE – Thursday Session

The Mobile Beef Lab provides a hands-on experience for students and teaches science principles through a ruminant animal – it’s complexities and what makes the ruminant truly unique in the environment and ecosystem. Students are able to put their arm inside the animal’s rumen and feel the incredible environment where digestion is taking place. They are also able to look at a sample of rumen fluid under a microscope and see some of the numerous microorganisms that live in the rumen and break down the feed that the animal eats. This Nebraska Extension mobile lab’s goal is to teach the value of, and support the production of, high quality, protein beef animals.
