A successful trait in most walks of life. by John Boddicker e ecutive vice president American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Mission Statement he AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior value added performance docility and carcass e cellence for the beef industry while also providing e panded membership services for adult and junior members. ou have often heard that the use of single trait selection is not a good recipe for success. I think one needs to realize that a constant.use of single trait selection is not a good recipe for success. I say that because in order to change the breed’s genetic trend for Weaning Weight (WW) PD it is going to take some speci c selection by Maine-Anjou breeders for the WW genetic trend to improve. The same would be true for any other trait that needs decided movement. To improve the breed for a speci c trait, a breeder must use reliable tools ( PD) in the selection process and apply appropriate levels of pressure. To that end, the AMAA strives to provide timely and useful information for use by breeders. The sire summary is one of those tools. As the breed moves toward a sounder understanding of the use of PDs and indexes we will, at times, be out of balance with our ultimate goal. To help capture the needed balance a number of changes in the sire summary format have been adopted. In the 2013 sire summary, that should be available to you via the AMAA Web site, you will notice some changes in its layout. - Added to the Sire Summary will be a main and young sire list for MaineTainer bulls. - Carcass traits will be incorporated with each bulls traits rather than a separate listing. - New additions to the summary include Calving ase (C ) and Maternal Calving ase (MC ) PDs. We are very excited to have the Maine-Anjou calving ease information available to the beef industry. To the credit of present day breeding programs the

calving dif culties that were experienced very early in the breeds growth in the U.S. have, to a very large degree, disappeared. Why Because selection pressure was needed to change the dystocia problems brought on by the breed’s early genetics. For a full explanation of these two PDs please refer back to the August/ September issue of the Voice. On pages 54 & 55 Dr. Bob Weaber and Dr. Wade Shafer contributed to an excellent explanation of these traits. MaineTainers now make up approximately 52 percent of the breed’s registry. MaineTainer breeding programs that have kept up with performance requirements will have PDs available just like those of their higher percentage breed contemporaries. When talking about the availability of MaineTainer PDs, we need to remember that in order for MaineTainer progeny to have PDs, both parents must contribute. Many MaineTainers that are registered do not have registered Maine-Anjou genetics on both sides of the pedigree. In those cases M a Ep Remember we have two data runs per year, in June and December, so if you need PDs on your MaineTainer progeny then make sure that each parent is in the system on the data run prior to when you will be submitting progeny. ook for the carcass traits to be included with the main and young sire lists rather than its separate listing in the back of the sire summary. A couple of last minute reminders with regard to the improvement of the breed’s genetic trend curve - Contemporary grouping is key to the success of the system! - Report all of your calf crop, not just the good ones. By only reporting the good ones you actually hurt the genetic reporting process rather than help. (This.point.is.critical) - Be honest with your reporting! - Use PDs to in uence your selection decisions to improve the traits of economic importance to your bull customers. As this edition of the eadquarters column comes to a close, what a resounding set of congratulations goes out to all of the consignors and participants
in the recently held National Western Stock Show (NWSS) Maine-Anjou events. ou will read in later articles within this issue, the Bright ights sale held many special moments and the quality presented in the breed’s pen, junior and open shows was outstanding. Questions Regarding AMAA Board of Director Issues? A few phone calls have been received in regard to the AMAA Board of Director discussion and/or rulings dealing with PHA & TH registration policy along with proposed changes within the MaineTainer registry. Please refer to page 55 of the January/February issue of the Voice where you can find the minutes of the Nov. 1, 2012 AMAA Board of Directors meeting. Basic ruling states; Bulls born after Jan. 1, 2014 that are not free by parentage or free by test will not be registered. Females born after Jan. 1, 2018 that are not free by parentage or free by test will not be registered. A couple of items of note: a) This is not retroactive so all carrier cattle that are now registered, it has no immediate effect. b) There has been discussion to allow carrier cattle (after dates mentioned above) into a foundation category (non show able) so as not to lose any of the pedigree or performance - next generation would not be penalized in its pedigree percentage or its performance numbers. If next generation is free, then would be registered, if next generation is again a carrier its pedigree and performance would advance, but again would be in the foundation program. c) Research and proposals will be made to board regarding the initial MaineTainer motion present in the minutes. Discussion will center on registerable 25 percent MaineTainers and if they may fit into foundation program guidelines. d) One of the main points of the foundation program would be the tracking and registration of both sides of a MaineTainer pedigree. An example would be that a non registerable dam would need to be entered into the foundation program in order for its progeny to be registered as a MaineTainer. The Breed Improvement Committee will be researching and discussing all options prior to the June 2013 meeting. Chairman Dennis Moore, Ill., Cody Tebbenkamp, Mo., Mike Holden, Iowa, Mike O’Hara Mt., and Josh Enlow, Okla., make up the Breed Improvement Committee. Commercial Connection 2013 National Western... OUTSTANDING! by Dave Steen, commercial development director
If a perfect weather pattern could have been ordered, then this year’s National Western delivered the perfect week. With an over abundance of anxious and aggressive bidding buyers of Maine-Anjou, this year’s Bright ights sale was an extraordinary event with an exciting line up of Maine-Anjou cattle offered. This was the sixth year in a row that the Colorado weather ful lled our wishes on sale day. Twenty three consignors from 10 states sold a total of 51 bulls, 20 heifers, two Sooner bull clones, an embryo lot and a ush lot of your choice from one of the three great females from reen Valley Cattle, Atkinson, Neb. The proceeds from ot 1 will be donated to the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) for use in the 2013 National Junior eifer Show that will be held June 15-21, 2013 in rand Island, Neb. Thanks to reen Valley Cattle and the Dennis arwood family for this generous donation. Wednesday was check-in day for the bulls and females. The bulls were weighed and ultrasounded for ribeye and fat thickness, measured for scrotal circumference and weight-per-day of age was gured. Thanks to the consignors for a smooth and timely check-in. On Thursday, Jan. 17, each sale bull was evaluated by a panel of three judges that included Fred DeRouchey, Mitchell, S.D., Mike O’ ara, Fort Benton, Mt., and Steve ruse, Tecumseh, Neb. Thank you to these gentlemen for making the trip to Denver to evaluate our sale bulls. our time and effort is very much appreciated. Congratulations and thanks again to this year’s consignors for bringing a great set of bulls and females to the Denver Bright ights sale. The ultrasound data and weights again showed the consistency and genetic strength of the Maine-Anjou breed and the positive impact this breed can create in the production cycle of the beef industry.

Once again the Bright ights sale saw a standing room only crowd of potential and anxious buyers. When the gavel fell, 51 sale bulls averaged $4,739, 20 heifers averaged $5,258, two Sooner bull clones brought $100,000 and three embryos brought a total of $6,000. The AJMAA donation lot was a ush donated by reen Valley Cattle, Dennis arwood family of Atkinson, Neb. The buyer was given the choice to select from three outstanding females from reen Valley Cattle. ach year raf e tickets are sold to bene t the AJMAA members to be able to offer opportunities in learning about the breed and gain knowledge and experience that will better their appreciation of the future of the beef industry. Staying ef cient and creative are becoming vital components to the beef industry as producers continue to face severe drought, low cattle numbers, high cattle prices, high input costs and consumer demands. Rick Carlson, former agriculture industry executive and now an independent consultant for various cattle operations around the world, spoke to more than 300 beef producers at Alltech’s lobal 500, a recent event hosted by animal health and nutrition company, Alltech. f ciency, Carlson stated, is the basis for survival during the next decade of cattle production and many

U.S. producers are taking the concept in stride. In 1977 the U.S. yielded 12 million tons of beef and the 2011 numbers re ect the same data, but with fewer cattle proof the industry is holding on even in the midst of dif cult times. Carlson, who owns an operation near ansas City, Missouri, and is involved in operations in China, said the best way for producers to face challenges is through harnessing the power of genetics and nutrition to create a better product that will in turn address consumer demands. enetics are tremendously important in building a
Feature better, high quality product, Carlson said. Combining that with nutrition is imperative to creating that product. Nutrition, to me, is one of the areas that offer the most bene ts when it comes to the future of beef. e encourages producers to gather data and analyze their cowherd. This gives an opportunity to cull nonperformers and add higher performing replacements. By looking at the changes in the DNA sequence, researchers can see how different traits are impacted. 50 SNIP (single-nucleotide polymorphisms) technologies analyze 50,000 sequences to enhance expected progeny differences ( PDs). We used SNIP technology to breed high accuracy bulls and used the top 50 cows to get 42 heifer cows out of it, Carlson said. According to Carlson, the cows later looked like two peas in a pod. I have no doubt this technology will allow us to move ahead very quickly in genetic turnover. It pays for itself very quickly, he said. This technology is even available to producers with smaller cow/calf operations and should be considered if producers want to stay ahead of the game. Carlson said good genetics will never make up for poor nutrition so the two must go hand in hand. Nutrition hasn’t made as many strides and genetics in the last ten years. As we understand the genetic makeup of the animal, the more we can feed those genes, Carlson said. Steve Scott, a member of Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association and an attendee of Alltech’s lobal 500, said he believes in the importance of having a quality nutritional program in his cattle not just during calving season, but year-round. What cattlemen don’t realize is the price you pay for a quality nutritional program is really buying
fertility and performance in your dams and offspring, said Scott. Incorporating different minerals and vitamin levels can give better results in the end with meat quality in mind and it’s the producer’s job to stay open to new information and technologies. Utilizing products from quality companies and going to industry conferences to learn is the best advice I can give, Carlson said. If you do it like you did the last 30 years, you won’t survive the next ve in the beef industry. Carlson also encourages producers to be involved in their local and state organizations to give the agriculture industry a strong voice in the face of misinformation and critique from consumers. Agricultural communications tend to be reactionary rather than proactive, he said. And while agriculture is not always a pretty business, connecting ranchers and the consumer is an imperative element in bridging the communication gap. In order to one day feed nine billion people, you have to protect agriculture and engage the consumers with us, Carlson said. There is a big disconnect between people living in the cities and those who farm. We need to tell our story and what the real industry is all about. Please note if a buyer submits a registration and/ or transfer from an owner that is not currently a dues-paid member, that buyer will be charged for the seller’s membership fee or annual dues (adult dues are $100). The exception to this rule is if all animals owned by that individual (non - or inactive member) are being transferred or cancelled at the same time as what the buyer has submitted, the membership fee would be waived. In that regard, work is held until complete payment is received.

Prior to registering any T calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, T and P A on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any T registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the T(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, T and P A testing can be done at eneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at eneSeek on Wednesdays so please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late in the next week after the testing begins; T and P A results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, so please make sure we have an up-todate e-mail address for you, if applicable.

Obituaries Merrill Orr Anderson Merrill Orr Anderson of Newman, Ill. and Weslaco, Texas passed away Saturday evening Feb. 2, 2013 at the Aurora ouse ospice after ghting a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at Joines-Appleby funeral home in Newman, Ill., on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at 10 a.m. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. Merrill was born in Broadlands on May 21, 1939 a son of arold Orr Anderson and Margaret ore Anderson. e married yn Coolley in 1962. Surviving is a son, James (Jim) Coolley Anderson, a granddaughter, Margaret (Meg) Cristina Coolley Anderson and a special friend Nancy Brady. e was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. e graduated from AB igh School in 1957 and attended the University of entucky on a basketball scholarship. e was a member of Troop B, 1st Recon Sqdn, 106 Artillery. Merrill was a farmer in the Broadlands area and raised Simmental cattle and Standardbred horses. e acquired his auctioneer’s license in 1962 in Decatur, Ill., and has been a auctioneer selling purebred hogs, cattle, Standardbred and Arabian orses since then. Merrill was inducted into the Marketeers of the ear all of Fame at the Denver ivestock Show on Jan. 19, 2013. Memorials may be made to the Newman American egion Post 201 Newman, Ill., or the Aurora ouse Foundation 2646 W. 18th St. in Weslaco, Texas. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of awkins funeral home in Weslaco.

Caution: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. For intramuscular use for estrous synchronization, treatment of unobserved (silent) estrus and pyometra (chronic endometritis) in cattle; for abortion of feedlot and other non-lactating cattle; for parturition induction in swine; and for controlling the timing of estrus in estrous cycling mares and clinically anestrous mares that have a corpus luteum. INDICATIONS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Cattle: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated as a luteolytic agent. LUTALYSE is effective only in those cattle having a corpus luteum, i.e., those which ovulated at least five days prior to treatment. Future reproductive performance of animals that are not cycling will be unaffected by injection of LUTALYSE. 1. For Intramuscular Use for Estrous Synchronization in Beef Cattle and Non-Lactating Dairy Heifers. LUTALYSE is used to control the timing of estrus and ovulation in estrous cycling cattle that have a corpus luteum. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly either once or twice at a 10 to 12 day interval. With the single injection, cattle should be bred at the usual time relative to estrus. With the two injections, cattle can be bred after the second injection either at the usual time relative to detected estrus or at about 80 hours after the second injection of LUTALYSE. Estrus is expected to occur 1 to 5 days after injection if a corpus luteum was present. Cattle that do not become pregnant to breeding at estrus on days 1 to 5 after injection will be expected to return to estrus in about 18 to 24 days. 2. For Intramuscular Use for Unobserved (Silent) Estrus in Lactating Dairy Cows with a Corpus Luteum. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly. Breed cows as they are detected in estrus. If estrus has not been observed by 80 hours after injection, breed at 80 hours. If the cow returns to estrus breed at the usual time relative to estrus. Management Considerations: Many factors contribute to success and failure of reproduction management, and these factors are important also when time of breeding is to be regulated with LUTALYSE Sterile Solution. Some of these factors are: a. Cattle must be ready to breed — they must have a corpus luteum and be healthy; b. Nutritional status must be adequate as this has a direct effect on conception and the initiation of estrus in heifers or return of estrous cycles in cows following calving; c. Physical facilities must be adequate to allow cattle handling without being detrimental to the animal; d. Estrus must be detected accurately if timed Al is not employed; e. Semen of high fertility must be used; f. Semen must be inseminated properly. A successful breeding program can employ LUTALYSE effectively, but a poorly managed breeding program will continue to be poor when LUTALYSE is employed unless other management deficiencies are remedied first. Cattle expressing estrus following LUTALYSE are receptive to breeding by a bull. Using bulls to breed large numbers of cattle in heat following LUTALYSE will require proper management of bulls and cattle. 3. For Intramuscular Use for Treatment of Pyometra (chronic endometritis) in Cattle. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly. In studies conducted with LUTALYSE, pyometra was defined as presence of a corpus luteum in the ovary and uterine horns containing fluid but not a conceptus based on palpation per rectum. Return to normal was defined as evacuation of fluid and return of the uterine horn size to 40 mm or less based on palpation per rectum at 14 and 28 days. Most cattle that recovered in response to LUTALYSE recovered within 14 days after injection. After 14 days, recovery rate of treated cattle was no different than that of nontreated cattle. 4. For Intramuscular Use for Abortion of Feedlot and Other Non-Lactating Cattle. LUTALYSE is indicated for its abortifacient effect in feedlot and other non-lactating cattle during the first 100 days of gestation. Inject a dose of 25 mg intramuscularly. Cattle that abort will abort within 35 days of injection. Commercial cattle were palpated per rectum for pregnancy in six feedlots. The percent of pregnant cattle in each feedlot less than 100 days of gestation ranged between 26 and 84; 80% or more of the pregnant cattle were less than 150 days of gestation. The abortion rates following injection of LUTALYSE increased with increasing doses up to about 25 mg. As examples, the abortion rates, over 7 feedlots on the dose titration study, were 22%, 50%, 71%, 90% and 78% for cattle up to 100 days of gestation when injected IM with LUTALYSE doses of 0,1 (5 mg), 2 (10 mg), 4 (20 mg) and 8 (40 mg) mL, respectively. The statistical predicted relative abortion rate based on the dose titration data, was about 93% for the 5 mL (25 mg) LUTALYSE dose for cattle injected up to 100 days of gestation. Swine: For intramuscular use for parturition induction in swine. LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated for parturition induction in swine when injected within 3 days of normal predicted farrowing. The response to treatment varies by individual animals with a mean interval from administration of 2 mL LUTALYSE (10 mg dinoprost) to parturition of approximately 30 hours. This can be employed to control the time of farrowing in sows and gilts in late gestation. Management Considerations: Several factors must be considered for the successful use of LUTALYSE Sterile Solution for parturition induction in swine. The product must be administered at a relatively specific time (treatment earlier than 3 days prior to normal predicted farrowing may result in increased piglet mortality). It is important that adequate records be maintained on (1) the average length of gestation period for the animals on a specific location, and (2) the breeding and projected farrowing dates for each animal. This information is essential to determine the appropriate time for administration of LUTALYSE. Mares: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated for its luteolytic effect in mares. This lutelytic effect can be utilized to control the timing of estrus in estrous cycling and clinically anestrous mares that have a corpus luteum in the following circumstances: 1. Controlling Time of Estrus of Estrous Cycling Mares: Mares treated with LUTALYSE during diestrus (4 or more days after ovulation) will return to estrus within 2 to 4 days in most cases and ovulate 8 to 12 days after treatment. This procedure may be utilized as an aid to scheduling the use of stallions. 2. Difficult-to-Breed Mares: In extended diestrus there is failure to exhibit regular estrous cycles, which is different from true anestrus. Many mares described as anestrus during the breeding season have serum progesterone levels consistent with the presence of a functional corpus luteum. A proportion of “barren”, maiden, and lactating mares do not exhibit regular estrous cycles and may be in extended diestrus. Following abortion, early fetal death and re-sorption, or as a result of “pseudopregnancy,” there may be serum progesterone levels consistent with a functional corpus luteum. Treatment of such mares with LUTALYSE usually results in regression of the corpus luteum followed by estrus and/or ovulation. In one study with 122 Standardbred and Thoroughbred mares in clinical anestrus for an average of 58 days and treated during the breeding season, behavioral estrus was detected in 81 percent at an average time of 3.7 days after injection with 5 mg LUTALYSE; ovulation occurred an average of 7.0 days after treatment. Of those mares bred, 59% were pregnant following an average of 1.4 services during that estrus. Treatment of “anestrous” mares, which abort subsequent to 36 days of pregnancy, may not result in return to estrus due to presence of functional endometrial cups. USER SAFETY (HUMAN WARNINGS) Not for human use. Women of childbearing age, asthmatics, and persons with bronchial and other respiratory problems should exercise extreme caution when handling this product. In the early stages, women may be unaware of their pregnancies. Dinoprost tromethamine is readily absorbed through the skin and can cause abortion. Accidental spillage on the skin should be washed off immediately with soap and water. RESIDUE INFORMATION No milk discard or preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for labeled uses in cattle. No preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for labeled uses in swine. Use of this product in excess of the approved dose may result in drug residues. Not for horses intended for human consumption. ANIMAL SAFETY (WARNINGS) Severe localized clostridial infections associated with injection of LUTALYSE have been reported. In rare instances, such infections have resulted in death. Aggressive antibiotic therapy should be employed at the first sign of infection at the injection site whether localized or diffuse. PRECAUTIONS • Do not administer intravenously (I.V.) as this route may potentiate adverse reactions. • No vial stopper should be entered more than 20 times. For this reason, the 100 mL bottle should only be used for cattle. The 30 mL bottle may be used for cattle, swine, or mares. • As with all parenteral products, careful aseptic techniques should be used to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. The vial stopper should be cleaned and disinfected prior to needle entry. Only sterile needles should be used and the same needle should not be used more than once. • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may inhibit prostaglandin synthesis; therefore this class of drugs should not be administered concurrently. Cattle: Do not administer to pregnant cattle, unless abortion is desired. Cattle administered a progestogen would be expected to have a reduced response to LUTALYSE Sterile Solution. Swine: Do not administer to sows and/or gilts prior to 3 days of normal predicted farrowing as an increased number of stillbirths and postnatal mortality may result. Mares: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is ineffective when administered prior to day-5 after ovulation. Pregnancy status should be determined prior to treatment since LUTALYSE has been reported to induce abortion and parturition when sufficient doses were administered. Mares should not be treated if they suffer from either acute or subacute disorders of the vascular system, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, or reproductive tract. ADVERSE REACTIONS Cattle: Limited salivation has been reported in some instances. Swine: The most frequently observed side effects were erythema and pruritus, slight incoordination, nesting behavior, itching, urination, defecation, abdominal muscle spasms, tail movements, hyperpnea or dyspnea, increased vocalization, salivation, and at the 100 mg (10X) dose only, possible vomiting. These side effects are transitory, lasting from 10 minutes to 3 hours, and were not detrimental to the health of the animal. Mares: The most frequently observed side effects are sweating and decreased rectal temperature. However, these have been transient in all cases observed and have not been detrimental to the animal. Other reactions seen have been increase in heart rate, increase in respiration rate, some abdominal discomfort, locomotor incoordination, and lying down. These effects are usually seen within 15 minutes of injection and disappear within one hour. Mares usually continue to eat during the period of expression of side effects. GONADORELIN HYDROCHLORIDE For Injection For the treatment of cystic ovaries in cattle. CAUTION Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. DESCRIPTION FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) is a sterile solution containing 50 micrograms of synthetic gonadorelin (as hydrochloride) per mL in aqueous formulation containing 0.6% sodium chloride and 2% benzyl alcohol (as a preservative). Gonadorelin is the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) which is produced by the hypothalamus and causes the release of the gonadotropin luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary. FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) has the identical amino acid sequence as endogenous gonadorelin; 5-oxo Pro-His-Trp-Ser-TyrGly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH2 with identical physiological activities. The molecular weight of gonadorelin is 1182 with a molecular formula of C55H75N17O13. The corresponding values for gonadorelin hydrochloride are 1219 (1 HCI) expressed as C55H75N17O13HCI, or 1255 (2 HCI) expressed as C55H75N17O13 2HCI. MECHANISM OF ACTION Follicular cysts are enlarged non-ovulatory follicles resulting from a malfunction of the neuroendocrine mechanism controlling follicular maturation and ovulation. Exogenous administration of agents possessing luteinizing hormone (LH) activity, such as pituitary extracts or human chorionic gonadotropin, often causes ovulation or regression of follicular cysts. FACTREL induces release of endogenous luteinizing hormone (LH) to produce this same effect. No significant differences have been demonstrated in days from treatment to conception, frequency of cows conceiving at first or subsequent heats, or conception rates among treated or non-treated control animals. INDICATIONS FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) is indicated for the treatment of ovarian follicular cysts in cattle. The treatment effect of FACTREL when used in cattle with ovarian follicular cysts is a reduction in the number of days to first estrus. DOSAGE The recommended dosage of FACTREL is 100 mcg/ cow intramuscularly. RESIDUE WARNING Because FACTREL is identical to endogenous GnRH such that both are rapidly metabolized without detectable levels in milk or tissue, no withdrawal period is required. STORAGE CONDITIONS Store at refrigerator temperature 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F). SAFETY AND TOXICITY In cows the intramuscular administration of up to 25 times recommended dosage (2,500 mcg/day) of FACTREL for 3 days did not affect any physiological or clinical parameter. Likewise, single intramuscular doses of 5 times recommended dosage (500 mcg) did not interfere with pregnancy. No evidence of irritation at injection site was found in any animal. HOW SUPPLIED FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) solution 50 mcg/mL is available in 20 mL multidose vials (box of one). Kinder A day of sale preparation is nothing new to the riswold family and crew. roups worked on torching cattle, the chutes were loaded with heifers being clipped and John took time away from all of that to be interviewed. The riswold Cattle Company ( CC) crew picked up where he left off and stepped it up while John took a few moments to explain their program, genetics and kiss his little, smiling baby. ast year I missed my rst National Western in 30 years because of this little girl, John riswold said. Boy, Maggie is well worth it! This year their crew put together another set of cattle that blew the roof off their Stillwater sale facility on Dec. 15, 2012. Their averages were reported at the end of the sale, with everyone smiling, high ving and looking like a family. Their bred heifers averaged $7,584, opens $11,167 and so on. I am higher on Maines more now than ever in my life. They even offered 400 units of their patriarch bull, Irish Whiskey. John is quick to point out that Whiskey works on all breeds, while giving them all the look

of a champion. Cattle with a shot of him in their pedigree have graced the backdrop of every major show. If we ever breed one as good as him again, we will have done something very right, John said. e has been the difference between us making it and not making it. John feels that he clicks with everything, for everyone. THE.GCC.NAME. The riswold brand stretches from Dupree, S.D., to Stillwater, Okla., and beyond. The 850 /- miles between Dupree and Stillwater are traveled often by John and his family, wife Jeannie and daughter, Maggie. They are very hands on and their knowledge will blow you away and their humble nature will set you back. John has many mentors, but one that is pretty high up on his list is en Birkeland, the glue of their South Dakota operation. Without him, our northern operation would not exist, said John. During the dry year of 2002, John called upon the Birkeland family often, asking questions about the

ai weather, herd, being an all-around interested person. e got a call that forever changed the shape of the CC and its future; a call to come view the whole herd, the Birkeland’s were selling out. I told dad we had to get up there and take advantage of the opportunity before someone else bought them and we were at their mercy, said John. They were able to expand to South Dakota by purchasing over 1,300 pairs, 365 bred heifers and the rights to lease the land in Dupree. en is a dear friend who has helped Dupree become like a second home to my family, said John. All the while he does it by working himself harder than I would and making our herd better. FAMILY.AT.THE.HELM Along with their Northern territory land, they also incorporate the whole riswold family in the herd. John runs cattle around Miami, Okla., his hometown, with his brothers David and Joseph riswold. They run about 200 head there and keep it all in the family. more family; brothers reg and ar eld and parents Joe and laine. Dad is my go to guy, the glue of our operation, John said. We still eat a lot of dinners with my parents, they are that important to us. We wouldn’t be where we are, who we are, or such a strong family without all of us being involved, John said. And family isn’t just about who you are blood related to. The CC crew consists of many guys, but John said without uke Doris, Mark Sneed and David Mozingo the work wouldn’t get done. It’s a lot of miles, time away from families and little pay sometimes. We are all about making it work, about the cattle, said John. It isn’t about the money. John said that since Maggie was born, he has gotten to the barn later and left earlier. is traveling schedule is drastically different with her, too. I used to just get on the road to Dupree at the time I am now pulling in to a hotel, he said. The crew has stepped up to allow him to be more of a family man. I appreciate their hard work more now than ever, John said. Another aspect, a new one, is their partnership with Chappell Feeders. riswold’s started sending heifers and steers to them in 2010. They sent 500 head the rst year and plan to double that number in the coming years. The genetic base is composed of 70 percent Maine-Anjou. They have been great to work with and they make sure we get paid for our genetics, said Jeannie. And it has been that way from the get-go. They believe that composite cattle work well as females and in the feedlot situation. With a base of good Angus cattle we follow that up by crossing them with Irish Whiskey and his sons, that is the key to our success, said John. They have a solid foundation of females, from many nationally recognized herds behind their breeding. Data shows the Irish Whiskey cattle can grade almost 94 percent choice or better. The progeny of

i Whiskey typically grade half a point higher than the other cattle and this is due to the power that comes from the sires side, said Roger Tuell, Colorado. They just feed awesome! The hybrid vigor and heterosis doesn’t just pay off for them in the feedlot, their heifers are worth a lot more in the long run. Their annual rass to rid Customer Appreciation sale, held Dec. 29, 2012 in Beaver, Okla., proves that. Their customers Irish Whiskey granddaughters averaged around $250 more than the average bred heifers in the sale. Our customers were rewarded for their genetic base and it goes back to a great bull, said Jeannie. CC retains ownership of the cattle and they feel getting a good return on their quality can sometimes be hard to nd in this marketplace. It has been a great relationship, said John. After the cattle are fed out, riswold’s receive a full slaughter report; quality grades, ribeye sizes,
yield grades and any additional premium related information. Not only have they branched out to a feedlot situation to keep up on their end product, their embryo transfer program is evolving and growing. I think it is time to focus more on quality and less on numbers, he said. e used to think that owning more numbers made a better herd. ately John said they have been focusing on using embryo work to make their quality deeper. When you nd a cow that clicks with a bull, keep doing that, he said. This year they collected between 250-300 embryos, with about 75 percent of those being Maine-Anjou embryos. Their number of T calves has increased dramatically in the last two to three years and we can expect to see more of the results of their ability to breed them in the future. John is a man of few words, but when he speaks people are bound to listen. Team him up with one of the smartest, cow savvy women in America and they are a force to be reckoned with. That is the combination that is clicking and working behind the scenes for John and Jeannie riswold. They have every avenue of the cattle market gured out, they are innovative and very forth coming in their beliefs. They support the Maine-Anjou industry, their juniors and their association, all the while knowing that changes can happen and they have to adapt to them. Jeannie is a woman in a man’s world and John brings out the best in her. Not only will the cattle industry thrive from their marriage, but so will Maggie and all the children they may have down the road.

2012 Friend of the Maine-An ou The 2012 friend of the Maine-Anjou award goes to an individual that has touched the lives of so many people in the cattle industry, especially those in the Maine-Anjou breed and our association. ere is a quote written previously about this gentleman ike a Nebraska tumbleweed, he meanders across the state and United States, always on the move and rarely in the same place more than a couple of weeks! Part adventurer, part rambler, this self-proclaimed entrepreneur calls the road his guide and an admiration for cattle his calling. Throughout the last 40 plus years this gentleman’s name has become common place among those in the registered cattle industry, helping at county fairs, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, Nebraska State Fair and major breed association’s livestock shows plus many production and dispersal sales. Thirteen years ago when the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) staff arrived at the NWSS, we attempted to drive our van up the alley to unload at the Maine-Anjou tent. Well, we were stopped by an of cial. After looking around, I came in contact with a friendly person who was working for the NWSS and I told him about our problem. et me see if I can help was his response. It wasn’t long and he was back, he told us to go ahead and drive on up to the tent. That was the beginning of a long lasting relationship with this gentleman and the Maine-Anjou breed. Today, and for the past 40 some years, this gentleman’s location varies with the season. Beginning with the NWSS, his focus becomes working at bull sales, breeder auctions, expo sales, followed by early spring shows and working his way through numerous state fairs. is reputation for having an eye for desirable cattle has added to his portfolio of consulting and order buying. The one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the people he has met in his travels. is numerous acquaintances hold his interest almost as much as the cattle industry itself. e says that his relationship with everyday producers and their families give him the greatest pleasure.
N.W.S.S. Coverage While he enjoys seeing the different breeds of cattle that sales bring out, he enjoys the events that focus on youth as they are the key to the future of the cattle industry. The AMAA is very fortunate to have come in contact with this gentleman 13 years ago, since that day he has volunteered and been a most gracious helping hand at a number of national Maine-Anjou events that include state fairs, American Royal, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, NWSS and numerous other shows throughout the Midwest. ou’ve all heard the saying, he’s a traveling man. Well nothing truer could be said as this gentleman has positively touched the lives of so many people throughout many breeds and we are fortunate to have him in the Maine-Anjou camp. e would like to thank Mr. John Boddicker, asey erman and indsey Broek for allowing him the opportunity to work with the Maine-Anjou breed. No matter when or where you meet this gentleman, he has that grin and patented smile to say, Can I give you a hand It gives me great pleasure to present the 2012 Friend of Maine-Anjou award to Mr. Ron Miller of Plattsmouth, Neb. 2012 Commercial Producer of the ear The next award goes to a cattle operation that purchased their rst 618 acres of their ranch in 1979. Today their Rio rande Ranch is comprised of over 2,000 acres of deeded land, plus an 18,000 acre forest that is used for additional grazing. They attribute much of their success to being able to acquire this land due to making the choice of incorporating MaineAnjou genetics into their cowherd in the beginning. Much of their summer pasture is at 10,000 feet, surrounded by forest and they feel the calm disposition of the Maines is a bonus when handling the animals in this situation. They were introduced to the Maine-Anjou breed in the 80’s, purchasing their rst prize winning Canadian fullblood heifer named Miss Poplar aven. After acquiring a number of fullbloods they began to cross the fullblood Maine-Anjou bulls on their Angus cows and

N.W.S.S. Coverage found them to be well suited to their high altitude. Today their herd numbers 320 cows, predominately Maine-Anjou cross. Calving issues are minimal, weaning weights and growth are outstanding, their 2012 calves averaged 650 lb., at delivery. Because of outstanding performance and carcass results, repeat buyers are standing at the gate to buy them year after year. Their ranch managers, Cheb and Sonja und do an excellent job in selecting their home raised replacement heifers and do an outstanding job of record keeping and selecting two to three replacement bulls each year in the Denver Bright ights sale. er husband passed away in 2009, but not before he realized his dream of owning a premium cattle herd. Their beautiful ranch is now in a conservatory easement so it will always remain a ranch raising MaineAnjou cattle. The AMAA would like to thank this operation for their numerous years of support of the Denver bull sale. It is very much appreciated! The 2012 Commercial Producer of the ear award goes to The Wilson Ranch, Mrs. inny Wilson of Del Norte, Colo. 2012 Friend of the Maine-An ou rowing up in Arkansas this man learned early on the importance of rural values. As an engineer with Texas Instruments, he learned the importance of offering quality products backed by customer satisfaction. Today he and his family have learned the importance of networking for success. These valuable lessons have all been applied to their outstanding Maine-Anjou operation. In his diligence to put together a top notch program, this operation started out by selecting fullblood genetics based on top sires like Cunia, pinal, Inox, Covino III, Streamliner, Cando and many others. e has been quoted as saying, We built a solid foundation fullblood herd which we’re very proud of. We want to maintain the integrity of these Maine-Anjou blood lines. e realized that in order to excel and service the majority of the cattle industry, he needed to start an extensive AI program using these fullblood lines and some of the current popular bulls in developing

a black purebred herd of Maine-Anjou cattle. As he and his family were developing this black herd, they also developed a very strong herd of red purebred cattle. They are currently using these red purebred cows with black bulls to support the commercial requirements in our industry. In his marketing program he makes it a point to visit every herd that they sell a bull to because he feels that it is their responsibility to guide customers when it comes to making bull selections. e has found that certain types of commercial cows require certain types of Maine-Anjou bulls to support that particular cattleman’s requirements. is family partnership feels very strongly that it is important to follow up and make sure that they have done the right thing in making recommendations, because referral sales are a big part of their program. This operation also feels that it is very important to keep the Maine-Anjou name in front of the public that advertising is the key. e also spreads the MaineAnjou message throughout his business circles. As a result of his business industry networking, customers come from a broad area of the South, including but not limited to New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, ouisiana and Mississippi. This enterprise is very supportive of the AMAA, especially the juniors, whom he recognizes as the future of the breed. They have donated heifers to be sold at auctions and supported the National Junior eifer Show and the junior Maine-Anjou association in their state. The senior partner has served as president of his state Maine-Anjou association. e was instrumental in establishing the Maine-Anjou Traditionalists and starting a newsletter that is mailed to its state members to help promote and continue to support the Maine-Anjou breed in his state. I can personally attest to this family’s great generosity and commitment to ful lling their promises! They do what they say they will do. ou can count on it! Looking. orward by Jordan Crall Region Director Wow! Isn’t showing cattle a thrill! With the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) and the Fort Worth Stock Show (FWSS) over, another show season has been completed. I really look forward to this time of year. New projects in the barn, new shows and expectations and especially new calves being born makes this time of year so exciting. Calving season can be like Christmas if you have made good choices in your breeding program. Congratulations to all the exhibitors at the NWSS and FWSS on your accomplishments. I’d like to thank all of you who helped with the fund-raiser in Denver, especially reen Valley Cattle for providing the donation lot for the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA). With the help of many supporters $13,750 was raised, to set a new junior board record of money raised, for the donation lot. It seems like the year has passed by very quickly as we’re now looking forward to the expos and junior national. This year it will be held June 15-21, 2013 in rand Island, Neb. Attending the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show is a great experience for all Maine-Anjou juniors. While the show part of junior national is very important, there are many opportunities to meet other exhibitors at the contests and events throughout the week. I remember wondering and worrying which contests to enter and who my team members might be at my first junior national. Now I look forward to all the fun and
challenges that come with this week. I hope every young member has the opportunity to attend. I really hope everyone can make it! Don’t forget National outh eadership Conference (N C) this summer. Watch for more information in the upcoming AJMAA spring newsletter and on the Web site, www.maine-anjou. org. I’m sure enjoying my time on the junior board and hope to see many other juniors running for the open positions this summer at the junior national.
