cmaa news I would encourage you, if you have recently received registration papers that do not have EPD’s printed on them, return the registration paper to the Office and the paper will be reprinted. I am encouraged by the balance and strength of the EPD profiles that I have viewed and look forward to building on the accuracy of these evaluations.
President’s report Well as always…it seems like just yesterday it was August and we were wrapping up another Annual General Meeting. But here I sit in January, reflecting on half a year of business that has transpired since then. It has been another busy year for the CMAA Board of Directors. I would like to take the time right now on behalf of the board and myself to Thank You - the membership, for your support making this Association function through registering cattle and advertising this wonderful breed. I had the fortune of making it out to both of the major shows this fall and was very proud of the animals that represented us at both the Western Canadian Supreme at Farm Fair International and the RBC Beef Supreme at Canadian Western Agribition. I was happy to visit with many people at both events – all very passionate about the cattle that this breed can offer. The CMAA Board has been working hard for you to put tools at your disposal to allow you to save dollars in your operation or to maximize your profitability by saving you time with online registrations. We now have EPD’s on our Registration papers although we did experience a hiccup in the software/programming that has now been resolved.

The Board has also had a lot of discussion about Breed Improvement over the last number of years. While the product we are producing is amazing, I think that there is a lot of potential for us to build our market share. In order for us to grow this breed, it is important to concentrate on Genetic Diversity. Many breeds have fallen into the trap of following trends and using the same 3 bulls. In order for us to grow and develop we need to realize that, while everyone breeds different cattle, we need to remember there are many, many options as long as we recognize the value of expanding our genetic values of animals and not single trait selecting. A very wise Maine Breeder told me a story about what his father shared with him. “To be successful” he said “when people take the highway you should take the gravel road”. Leaders lead and sheep follow. There are advantages to using outcross genetics when you have that ability. When we use outcross genetics it allows us to harness a “hetrosis” like reaction within our breed. We can add growth, performance and maternal characteristics by using new and old bulls with a vision. We can propel this breed forward to places it has not been if we take time and diligence to be breeder’s first…multipliers second. We recognize the strength of our Percentage breeders creating the stepping stones; the Purebred breeders for their focus and dedication; and the start, the foundation - Fullblood Maine-Anjou Breeders. Continue to look 5 years ahead because as they say, Rome was not built in a day. The future of our breed relies on you taking chances and pushing the boundaries of your breeding programs. I look forward to visiting with you this summer at the Annual Meeting in Ontario. Your president, Scott McCormack

EPD’s there has been a glitch in the system to have EPD`s
printed on our registration papers. The problem has been fixed now and EPD`s can be looked up online from our website and are printed on the registration papers as well. If you have received registration papers with no EPD`s, please return them to the office and I will re-print new certificates. Please remember to send me accurate birth weights, weaning weights and yearling weights. The more data we have on file the more valuable our EPD’s will be.
Online Registry: In order to log in and register your
animals online you need to request a password from the office. After you have entered your registrations, I will print them in the office, charge your credit card and mail your papers to you.
Office manager’s Report Dear members, Happy New Year! Best wishes to all of you! Calving season is well underway for some of you; what an exiting time of the year to see the result of your breeding decisions! The new born calves will be the future of your herd. I wish you good luck and good health for this very demanding time of the year! Thank you to the Board of Directors for allowing me to take a month off in October. It was greatly appreciated! I truly hope my time away from the office did not affect any of our members in any way!
Biobank move from Quantum to Delta Genomics: Our DNA has arrived at Delta Genomics. I have been
told that it will take until February to have our samples inventoried. Until then some genotyping results will have delays. From now on we will use Delta Genomics for all our DNA testing.

APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER

Applications for transfer of ownership must be made in ink or typewritten on forms supplied by the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association and must give date of sale and date of delivery. In the case of female, if bred by natural service, the service certificate portion of the application must be completed and signed by the owner of the service sire at the time of service. If the female is bred artificially, a Certificate of Service approved by the Board of Directors, shall accompany the application for transfer of ownership. The application for transfer of ownership shall be presented to the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association with the Application for Registration if the animal is not registered, or with the Certificate of Registration if the animal is registered. The change of ownership will then be endorsed on the certificate. IMPORTANT: The office will not transfer any animal without having received the original certificate of registration (if the animal is already registered)! There should be only one certificate of registration for each animal in the public! 12

Canadian Maine-Anjou association Biobank Updates
All of our DNA has been moved from Genserve in Saskatoon to Delta Genomics in Edmonton with the help of CBBC funding. Presently, Delta Genomics is working on inventorying all of our DNA. Our DNA is being inventoried by end of February. This means there will be some delays in some cases. For example, if an animal has a micro satellite profile on file and will need to get a SNP profile for parentage verification. In some cases it will be faster to send new hair for a SNP test (if the animal in question is still alive). Please contact the office if you have any questions! At the moment the office is setting up an electronic data transfer via the registry system with the help of IT technicians from ABRI and Delta Genomics. Technology is moving fast ahead and we have to make the best out of it by keeping up with all the new changes. This said, all needs time and trial. We all learn through errors and sometimes it takes time to get problems solved. Heidi tries to do her best to keep up with all the new technology and features as much as time allows her. BUCKWHEAT ACRES INC. Featuring Tee Jay’s Fullblood Maine-Anjou I (Timothy James McKee), am writing this article in reference to calling all Fullblood Maine-Anjou enthusiasts; The Maine-Anjou breed entered Canada in 1969, approximately 50 years ago, near the same time as the Charolais breed entered this country. And while Charolais cattle have continued to flourish, Maine-Anjou cattle have steadily decreased; despite BSC. Yet when comparing the Charolais breed to the Maine-Anjou breed; both are very similar in nature. The next 50 years will see more change within the “Beef Industry”, more so than the past 50 has. For example, within the past decade; the average age of cow-calf-producers has moved from the age of 48-years-old to 60-years-old, as there are fewer young cattlemen and women (25-years-old to 35-years-old) entering the “Beef Industry”. Therefore, cow herds will continue to grow larger in-order to attract the Feedlot and Packing Sector/s. Now I began my journey with Fullblood Maine-Anjou cattle at the early age of 16-years-old, and I have remained focused, mainly on the continued improvement of “Foundation Cattle” for the past 17 years; come this August. I have done so because I believe that “Foundation Cattle” are most suited for unlocking vigor within all herd/s of the “Beef Industry”. Case and point; plant-breeders move their program by starting with the “purest” of seed, then move to “select”, then “registered”, then “certified”, and end with “common” or “grade” seed. A Fullblood Maine-Anjou focus also provides the “Beef Industry” with many attributes that enhance the performance in Commercial cow-herds and further the Feedlot Sector. “Foundation Cows” provide excellent maternal traits, including but not limited to; docility, milk production, and calf performance, while “Foundation Bulls” provide added performance and strong carcass traits. And to better explain the Feedlot performance of such offspring; this provides ADG’s of 4.25 pounds plus, with feed conversions of 5 to one (meaning it takes 5 pounds of feed per one pound of gain), to which the carcass traits of these animals; provide the Packing Sector with Canada A to AAA beef, and 60 to 65% lean-meat-yield (to which, Limousin enthusiasts boast the fact of their cut-ability being; “…60 to 65% lean-meat-yield…”). There is no question that many of our Fullblood Maine-Anjou enthusiasts are growing older, leaving a select number of younger Fullblood Maine-Anjou enthusiasts to improve the breed as a whole for generations to come. As young Fullblood enthusiasts, we need to focus on unification, first; by drawing on the strength and knowledge that our senior enthusiasts possess, then; by pulling together with a focus of expanding our belief of “Foundation Cattle”. Furthermore, Fullblood enthusiasts as a whole need to become collectively focused to decide where we fit; developing a marketing strategy to includes all herd/s within the “Beef Industry”. And today’s communication tools leave little room for isolation, unlike the generation before us; thus providing endless opportunities to meet and connect without needing to leave home. While many questions, such as; “…where have we come from…”, “…where are we now…”, and “…where are we headed…” go unanswered, let us take a page from Japan’s History: Japan moved from total destruction in 1945 to being one of today’s world economic leaders that thrives; after they answered the questions above. This took; time, patience, determination, and the willingness to work together for the betterment of the Japanese nation as a whole. Some call this guts, yet “without guts; there can be no glory”. By working as a team we become stronger, remember; Wayne Gretzky was not the only man on the “Edmonton Oilers Dream Team”. It took every teammates focus to work in unison in-order for the Edmonton Oilers to taste the sweet nectar of victory from Lord Stanley’s Cup. The contest will run for 12 weeks; one new bull picture will be posted each week. At the end of the 12 weeks, all pictures will be calculated and the person who answered the most correct will win the prize. If there is a tie for the most correct answers then it will be decided by who answered the most correct answers the quickest, taking the time of the post comment on the Facebook page. The 12 bulls will be from the 70’s-80-90’s and range from Fullblood, Purebred, Red & Black. People will have to comment on the picture of the bull with his name and also like the photo to participate in the contest.
We are hoping this contest will create more interest on the Canadian Maine-Anjou Facebook page as well as the history of the breed.

The Douglas Bull test station started the 2016-2017 season with 140 bulls from 8 breeds and 21 heifers. There are 10 Maine-Anjou bulls on test, ranging from Fullbloods to 1/2 bloods. In the heifer pen there are 7 MaineAnjou’s; 4 Fullbloods, 1 Pure bred and two 1/2 bloods. All Maine-Anjou cattle are consigned by Badgerhill MaineAnjou. Cattle for this year’s test were delivered the week of October 11-15. Test weight was taken November 7-8th. 56 day weights were taken January 3rd, 2017. Station averages were ADG at 4.02 W/D/A at 3.2 on bulls Maine-Anjou bulls ADG at 3.77 W/D/A at 3.18 Maine-Anjou heifers ADG at 2.19 W/D/A at 2.81 84 day weights, January 31st, 2017 End of test, February 27&28, 2017 Sale day, April 1st, 2017 18

For heifers to qualify for the sale they must be registered, pass a structural and breeding soundness exam and are palpated by a veterinarian to ensure the are breeding animals. The SMAA hosted our major Fall Show at Agribition. Maine-Anjou entries were up and we are appreciative to everyone that came to join us for the show! It was a transition year at Agribition, as some of the old buildings came down in the spring of 2016 to make way for new buildings. The Maine-Anjou cattle were stalled in the new building next to a brand new wash rack. January 2017 will see the demolition of the remaining buildings and a Grand Opening of the newly finished renovations is scheduled to take place at Agribition 2017.

Greetings from Ontario 2016 was a progressive year for the Ontario Maine-Anjou Association. We met in September and elected a new Board of Directors. I am happy to say that I was voted as the President of the Association, and would like to thank everyone for their confidence. I am excited to promote our breed with classes at our Jr. shows, Open Fair shows and of course with 4-H. The Lindsay show held in September was a success numbers were down slightly but overall a good representation of the Maine-Anjou breed. Also there was a number of heifers shown for 4H at the Royal Winter Fair held in November. The board of directors is as follows:

With another calving season upon us comes excitement and a renewed confidence in the Maine Anjou Cattle we raise. We have a strong and active provincial association to serve our growing membership and a young and energetic junior association to serve the needs of our younger members. I want to congratulate all of the exhibitors who took the time to bring their cattle to Farmfair. It was truly a great representation of high quality Maine cattle on display and good to see an increase in people in the stands watching as well as great traffic throughout the barns. Thanks to Doug and Kate Roxburgh and Della and Keltey Whelan for taking time to organize the show. We would also like to say thanks to all of our show sponsors for their generous donations. We hope everyone is enjoying their Alberta Maine Anjou calendar. Thanks to everyone who chose to advertise in as the profits go towards supporting junior and 4-H programs. Miriam Cameron, Keltey Whelan, and Bryan Zimmer put a lot of time and effort into putting together this calendar together and we thank them for it.
Our 4-H awards program continues to be managed by Della Whelan and information regarding how to receive awards for showing a maine influence can be found on our website. www.albertamaine-anjou.com. If you are showing a maine steer or female or know of a junior who is please have them contact us so we can get them a reward. Thanks again to Della for ensuring the 4-H kids are taken care of. As we work our way through spring and into summer I would like to encourage all juniors to consider attending Summer Synergy and the National Junior maine anjou show. These are both great events for young people wanting to develop their skills within the industry. Some times you get busy in life and forget to give thanks to the ones that helped get you where you are today. On behalf of the Alberta Maine Anjou Association and all of our members I would like to say thank you to Jean Renton for the years of service you gave us as our treasurer.
