OFFICE MAnager’s Report Hello Everyone! I hope this finds everyone doing well. Harvest should be well under way when you receive this magazine. The Canadian Maine-Anjou office has been busy this year with the Salers Association asking us to do their Registry work. It has made for an interesting Spring and Summer for me. I would like to give the Canadian Hereford Association a hats off for the great job they did organizing the 16th World Hereford Conference. I attended the Hereford technical sessions at the BMO centre in Calgary. It was very informative and interesting with many wonderful speakers. We have had another wild summer across Canada weather wise. Saskatchewan outnumbered the whole of the USA with 10 to 12 tornados in the month of July with up to 30 across Canada to date. Ontario is very dry and is looking for rain while other provinces are very wet. There is never a happy medium.

In the office, we have ordered new caps so please let me know if you would like to order a few. Also, we can still order jackets which were a big hit. As I write this, I am also getting ready to head up to Red Deer for the Annual General Meeting. I look forward to this event as I get to see some of the breeders, that I only get to talk to on the phone, in person. The Maine-Anjou registration work has been steady this past year and I would like to thank the membership for their continued support. I hope to see everyone out at Farm Fair, Agribition and I hope everyone attending the National Maine-Anjou Show in Lindsay, Ontario has a great time. Thank You, Lois Chivilo

AB Association News The Alberta Maine-Anjou Association continues to support two venues with Maine-Anjou shows in Alberta; Farm Fair in Edmonton and Westener Days in Red Deer. In conjunction with Westerner Days, the Juniors host their Annual Show. Our numbers are down as exhibitors but the quality is still there.

AMAA continues to promote and support 4-H members who use Maine-Anjou genetics for their projects. This spring 27 clubs submitted names of 84 members with 97 projects; consisting of carcass, steer, yearling heifer and cow/calf. There is also more clubs that have not sent their membership’s breed projects as some clubs do not hold their awards night until fall.

Maine-Anjou presence was felt at the “4-H On Parade”in Calgary, the largest 4-H show in Canada. The Supreme Champion Female and Grand Champion Steer both had Maine-Anjou genetics. Thank you to everyone who attended the CMAA Annual General Meetings in August!

Douglas Test Station Report
The Manitoba Maine-Anjou Association held our Annual Meeting Feb. 1 in Brandon. We welcomed new members Cam and Tracy Wood to our Association; they purchased the CEE Farms herd from the Walker family. Two bull sales were held this year - the Douglas Bull Test and Wilkinridge Farms. Both sales were well attended and had a good average.
The Manitoba Bull Test ended the year with 144 bulls of 10 breeds eligible for the sale. I25 bulls sold for an average of $2877.
We handed out tokens to 4-H members and early reports were that 4-H members showing Maine-Anjou calves were very successful. Trevor Lees of Mather Club was champion jackpot and high gainer in his club; Janelle Johnson was champion in Killarney club and reserve over-all at her Achievement Day. Janelle Johnson along with Tayler and Justin Carvie travelled to the Calgary Stampede with their steers and did well in the open and carcass classes. This year our board consists of Sid Wilkinson, Sandi Underhill, Ross McBride, Connie Johnson, Patrick Johnson, Myron Lees, Sean Egge and Tracy Wood. Carmen Falloon is our Douglas Bull Test Station rep and Janelle Johnson is our junior ambassador. On behalf of the Manitoba Maine-Anjou board I hope you have a successful AGM and a good fall.
The high gaining bull was a Black Angus with an ADG of 5.41and WPDA of 3.75. The high gaining Maine had an ADG of 4.56 and WPDA of 3.54 and it was the high selling bull. LICE IN CANADA by Roy Lewis DVM
In spite of the usage of pour on endectocides over the last several years, many producers are lapsing and the lice populations are increasing. In our practice, the incidence of biting lice is on the increase; perhaps because it is very hard to completely control this parasite because these lice are always on the move. The pour on endectocides do an extremely thorough job at bringing the numbers of sucking lice to virtually zero on any recently treated animal. It is most definitely an economic concern to cattle producers. Lice are the most common and persistent parasite in wintered cattle in Western Canada. There is one species of biting lice (they cause severe irritation and scratching) and three of sucking lice (they cause anaemia and weight loss) on Canadian cattle. In one large, two-year study of calves entering southern Alberta feedlots between 57-95% of calves were lousy to varying degrees. This indicates a very high infestation rates on some of our cow-calf herds. The life cycle varies between 21 and 30 days depending on the species. In this time an egg can hatch grow to an adult and start the cycle over again. It is easy to see then why populations can increase almost exponentially after awhile and become a severe problem in some herds. The older products like neguvon, spotton and lysoff only killed the hatched lice so it was often necessary when using these products to repeat the treatment in two weeks. Most of these products are now discontinued. The newer endectocides have a long lasting effect and continue to kill the eggs as they hatch and as a bonus their price has come down considerably the last two years. It is extremely important when you treat to treat all in-contact animals, as transmission between in-contact animals is very rapid. If some are missed, they reintroduce the lice to previously treated ones restarting the whole lifecycle. Don’t forget to treat the bulls they can have the highest infection rates and can expose the cows and calves at the breeding season if they are missed. Herds will have carrier animals, ones that have an abnormally high population of lice. These animals may be immunosuppressed for some reason or have a concurrent disease. Cattle in poor nutritional shape will have lowered immune responses and allow lice to build up quickly. With today’s confinement and larger herds can exacerbate lice transmission. Young calves are especially vulnerable since a lot of their energy is being put into growth. It is extremely important to have the cow’s lice free at the start of the calving season so the calves don’t become infested. The close proximity to each other and sucking the udder allow for easy transmission of lice between dam and calf. I have seen severe lice build-ups in calves as young as two weeks. These lice infestations cause, as already mentioned, anaemia, itchiness with hair loss, irritation, increase susceptibility to disease and most importantly from an economic standpoint, weight loss or poorer weight gains and feed efficiency. These growth slowdowns may seem invisible, much like internal parasites are, but it most definitely makes sense to treat. Even though direct studies involving economic loss to amount of lice have not been done, if 50 or more lice are found in an entire examination the infestation is considered heavy. Lice are found on different parts on the body but commonly the neck or brisket, around the eyes, top line, tailhead or the udder and scrotum. Sucking lice are quite visible to the naked eye are adherent to the skin and a bluish colour. Biting lice 22 Maine Mail Fall 2012
are quite a bit smaller barely visible and a yellow colour. It is best to part the hair with a comb or clip an area especially around locations where scratching is occurring. Your veterinarian can do skin scrapings if mange is also being considered. All these parasites are easily identified with a microscope. Remember cattle normally scratch in day to day grooming procedures and there are several other causes of scratching or rubbing. The other causes of scratching may be determined in the examination process if no parasites are found. Treatment for lice is quite effective if done in the later fall when populations are building up and if all cattle are treated together. Lice are the main parasitic problem in Western Canada whereas internal parasites are a real problem in the southern US. This is because a lot of these parasites are weather or temperature dependent. Lice prefer the cooler spring fall and mild winter weather. Lice populations are lowest in summer. The cold winters and frozen conditions temporarily suspend the internal worm lifecycle. Several areas of the US do not have the benefit of frost to slow down the lifecycle of worm transmission and have huge problems with them. For continual control of lice, oilers can be used at pasture and they also provide relief from flies and mosquitoes during the summer months. Several products can be used and are usually mixed with diesel fuel to provide this control. The only problem with oilers is they are expensive as an initial purchase and need a lot of maintenance. The pour on endectocides (there are several brands out there presently) generally provides very good treatment for lice as well as mange and internal parasites. The reputable ones carry a lice guarantee meaning if lice are found on treated animals for a considerable time after treatment and a veterinarian diagnosis this the product will be replaced. This is providing there is no mixing of animals and the treatment was applied appropriately. This is very noble of the manufacturers considering the biting lice and the most common type of mange (chorioptic) are surface feeders moving around a lot and really no product will 100% eliminate them unless multiple treatments are given. Be sure to abide by the instructions, as there are long slaughter withdrawals on most of these products. Newer products on the market with trade names like Boss, Delice etc. contain the product permethrin and are especially effective against biting lice and because they don’t go systemic, have a one-day slaughter withdrawal; a distinct advantage with heavy feeder cattle. They are specifically for lice so are considerably cheaper than the endectocides. They are worth considering for short keep cattle or in re-treatment situations when lice, more specifically biting lice, have been diagnosed. If you are unsure of internal parasites have your veterinarian perform several fecal exams and see if the deworming for internal parasites is really necessary in your herd every year. In summary, all cattle in Western Canada should be treated for lice at least once yearly; preferably in the fall tied in with other management procedures. The pour on products makes it very easy. Whether it is tied in with a deworming is between you and your veterinarian. Be careful when introducing new stock for the presence of lice and be ever vigilant for the signs of scratching and hair loss. Our climate is ideal for lice reproduction so we can’t let up in our preventative approach. P.S. There is nothing more embarrassing than washing purebred cattle for a show and finding them covered with lice!

CMAA Annual General Meeting - Red Deer, AB Wow - what a great weekend in Alberta! The tours and meetings were held in the Red Deer area August 17 - 19th. The weekend started on Friday with a tour and lunch at the Wise Ranch near Irricana, AB. Some stayed to visit before heading to our next stop - NuHaven Cattle Co, Pine Lake, AB for a texas style BBQ. Others squeezed in a stop at Anchor C Cattle Co., Olds, AB. The Canadian Maine-Anjou Association Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday in Red Deer. A very successful but uneventful meeting followed by a delicious roast beef supper and fellowship. Doug Roxburgh, Vice President chaired the meeting as President Stuart Byman was unable to attend. The three open director positions were filled by new director Kelly Fraser, Pine Lake, AB and returning to the board was Sid Wilkinson, Morris, MB and Brian Brown, Wetaskawin, AB. Stuart Byman also moves to Past-President as he resigns from the Board. Thank you Stuart for your hard work and dedication to the CMAA!
