On behalf of DP Sales and the Land of Lincoln group of breeders I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the 13th annual Land of Lincoln sale. Again the sale will be held on Saturday November 3rd at the Diamond A sale facility in Altamont, Illinois. As always the Alwardt family does a great job being the host for the sale and all involved ties into a great team of breeders. The breeders have always maintained goals of breeding and marketing Simmental and Sim Angus genetics that not only work for their individual programs, but for the customer as well. The breeders offer cattle that are from predictable lines that offer efficiency, functionality, with eye appeal plus have realistic production traits. Over the years a few things have changed at the Land of Lincoln however the group continues to work as a team and provide genetics that excel in the real world. For the past years several cows families have been consistent in their production ability in this sale and this year look up the progeny from the Reba line. Congraluations to Tyler Alwardt on his Champion bred and owned. Genetics sell out of this champion. This year the sale offering includes a great set of opens that are ready to go any where. As in the past many champions have originated from this sale and we will look forward to seeing some of show prospects end up in good homes and be rewarding for the new owner. Presenting Fall 2012 EPDs on a New Base The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evolution for the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry — a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world. As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first; however, over time we will all grow accustomed to the new scale. For example look at the average EPDs of purebreds shown in this table. The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals;it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.
