ne of the things that makes me excited as the fall sale season starts is knowing that soon everyone will be heading to Louisburg, Kansas. I hope that you and your family will choose to be with us this year as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Head of the Class sale. It seems like yesterday that the Head of the Class sale hosted their first event, and it is even more exciting to see the evolution of the operations involved with the sale. DP Sales Management along with Steve and Margaret Sanders invite you to be with us on September 22nd. I am sure you all have seen the ads that the 10th Head of the Class Sale will feature the sale of KenCo Miley Cottontail. What an opportunity for the lucky bidder! Cottontail’s influence on the Simmental breed the last few years has been seen everywhere. Show champions have been campaigned by the Schneider family and an outstanding herd sire can be seen on the pages of sale catalogs. Though Cottontail will be one people talk about, this years sale offers open females destined for the tanbark and bred females ready to take their place in the pasture. The depth and quality of the lots in the Head of the Class sale always makes me extremely proud to work with a group so focused on moving forward in the Simmental breed. No matter what you are looking for or what your budget might be, I know you will find something in Louisburg you can’t wait to load on your trailer. We always brag on Steve Sanders for his gracious hospitality during the sale, and will continue to for years to come. Steve and his crew make the Head of the Class a true five star event for everyone in attendance. It makes our job easy when you have someone like Steve who cares so much about the presentation of his animals along with his gift of amazing hospitality. One thing that the members of the Head of the Class Sale understand is that their continued success relies on their customers. It would take up to much paper to mention all the show ring, sale ring and pasture champions these cows have produced. The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evolution for the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry — a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world. As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first; however, over time we will all grow accustomed to the new scale. For example look at the average EPDs of purebreds shown in this table. The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals;it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.
