“B” is in the catalog to indicate those bulls with which we feel comfortable in recommending as calving ease bulls with birth weight EPDs below breed average and most likely suitable to use on heifers. “G” is noted on those bulls whose evaluation of all criteria including their own performance and EPDs can indicate they can add growth above the breed average. “M” is listed on those bulls whose pedigree and EPDs indicate they can add maternal ability or milk for those who plan to keep replacement heifers. “C” is listed on those bulls whose carcass weight EPD and ribeye area EPD exceed breed average thus adding pounds of carcass and muscling to their offspring. “MS” is listed on those bulls whose marbling EPD and/or ultrasound IMF% indicate their ability to sire offspring to fit the mainstream market.

Polled Tests

Gene Seek Inc. of Lincoln, Nebraska performed the DNA tests for the polled trait. Every animal has two copies of each gene. One copy of each is inherited from the sire, the other from the dam. Polled is a dominant gene, meaning animals with one or two copies of the polled gene will be phenotypically polled. Animals having two copies (homozygous) for the polled gene will produce only phenotypically polled offspring. Tru-Polled results are reported in one of the following categories: Homozygous Polled = Two (2) copies of the polled gene Heterozygous Polled = One (1) copy of the polled gene Horned = Zero (0) copies of the polled gene Inconclusive = Test cannot determine if the animal has copies of the polled gene Some homozygous polled cattle are results of both sire and dam being homozygous, thus they are marked homozygous polled (ped). EPD and Performance Information The EPDs in this catalog reflect the new base used to calculate EPDs for Limousin cattle. They now have the same look as Angus EPDs. For commercial producers this rescaling helps simplify the use of Limousin EPDs by managing the set of rankign benchmarks similar of both breeds. While EPDs of the two breeds cannot be directly compared, if you know the benchmark within the Angus genetic evaluation, you also know the EPD benchmarks within the Limousin evaluation. Twice a year EPDs are recalculated to include any new data that has been submitted to NALF. This is don to keep them up to date and improve accuracies. With this in mind, expect EPDs to change on the animals you purchase. The EPDs for the Lim-Flex caves reflect the combined EPDs of the Angus Association and the current information in the Limousin EPD bank from the sires and dams of that breed. As this is a fairly new development, the accuracies will be low.

PERFORMANCE EPDS—

CD EPDs: Stands for Calving Ease Direct and is important when choosing sires to produce calves born easily. The higher the number, the better. BW EPDs: Express the difference in birth weight on the progeny of the bulls being compared. WW EPDs: Express the difference in pounds at 205 days on the progeny of the bull being compared. YW EPDs: Do the same as WW except it is the weight at 365 days. MA EPDs: Predict differences in weaning weights from daughter’s calves due to genes inherited for milk. CM EPDs: Stand for Calving Ease Total Maternal and are important for choosing sires that produce replacement females that give birth to their first calf easily. The higher the number, the better. SC EPDs: Are expressed in centimeters of scrotal circumference, and compare the difference expected in sons of the animal. Scrotal EPDs are a good indicator of age of puberty of both the sons and daughters of the animal.

CARCASS EPDS—

CW EPDs: Express the difference in pounds of carcass weight. REA EPDs: Express the difference in square inches of rib eye area. YG EPDs: Due to the limited range and usefulness of Limousin in fat thickness EPDs, they have been replaced witht hemore informative EPDs for yield grade 1. YG EPDs are favored and indicate genetic differences for yield grade and cutability of offspring. Fat EPDs: Express the difference in the inches of back fat. MS EPDs: Express the difference in the amount of marbling or flecks of fat in the rib eye. $MTI Dollar Value Indexes are used to rank animals according to net genetic merit for profit from geentics for post-weanig growth and carcass performance. This information should help you analyze and sort the bulls to fit your specific needs. We realize this is a lot of data to use, so please ask us if you need further assistance.

In order to allow you to compare these potential young herd sires with the breed average, we have listed their percentile rank along side the EPDs of several of the most economically important traits. This allows you to make quick reference when selecting for specific traits to fit your needs.

Mainstream Terminal Index NALF’s mainstream terminal index ($MTI) is a multiple- trait selection index, expressed in dollars per head, designed to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. It measures differences in expected profit per carcass produced on a mainstream grid (yield grade 1 or 2, Select to low-Choice quality grade, and no over- or underweights or dark cutters). The $MTI is based on the assumption that Angus- Hereford cows in a two-breed rotation are mated to Limousin-influenced terminal sires with the resulting calves sold into the commodity beef market with premiums and discounts based on both quality and yield grade and quality grade and gives an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the Limousin herdbook if the sires were randomly mated to similar herds of black baldy cows and if the calves were exposed to the same environment. When using $MTI, it is wise to simultaneously select for eonomically important traits that are not included in the index. The index was developed for use in a terminal sire situation in which Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls are bred to mature British cross cows and all calves are placed in the feedlot and sold on a mainstream grid. Maternal traits, such as calving ease, are not included in the index. If you intend to use high $MTI bulls on first-calf heifers, you will also want to use EPDs for calving ease direct to minimize calving difficulty. Likewise, in order to keep pace with the Limousin breed’s tremendous improvement in temperaments, selection for superior docility EPDs is also advised. It is also important to understand the assumptions behind $MTI and consider genetic differences among animals in the component traits that contribute to $MTI. Because $MTI is composed of EPDs for several traits, it does not have an associated value for accuracy. However, animals with high accuracy values for each of the component traits (weaning weight, yearling weight, yield grade and marbling score) have more reliable $MTI that are less subject to change than animals with low accuracies for each of the component traits. $MTI index and ranking is the last trait listed on the EPD portion of each pedigree in the catalog.

Ultrasound Measurements for Body Composition PROCEDURE: Body composition measurements are taken with an Aloka 500 real-time ultrasound machine connected to a transducer that has been designed specifically for animal use. Scan measurements for fat thickness and ribeye area are taken at the 12-13th ribs on each bull during the off-test weigh date. Scan measurements for intramuscular fat (marbling) are also taken at the 12-13th ribs. The scans are stored and returned to the ISU Animal Science Department for processing. ADJUSTMENTS: Ribeye area is adjusted to 365 days using a linear area per day of age adjustment. Fat measurement of external fat is not adjusted while marbling as percent of intramuscular fat is adjusted to 365 days. RIBEYE ARF: Ribeye area is measured in square inches. Ribeye area is positively and highly correlated with retail product. The heritability of this trait is moderately high meaning that the trait will be passed on to progeny. According to NCBA National Beef Quality Audit—1991, ribeyes of 11 to 14 square inches are most appropriate for cutting 1-inch thick steaks weighing 8 to 10 ounces. FAT THICKNESS: Fat thickness is measured in inches. Fat thickness is a good indicator of percent retail product. The higher the fat thickness, the lower the percent retail product. Fat thickness is lightly lower in heritability than ribeye area. MARBLING: Marbling is measured as percent fat. Heritability for marbling is in the moderate range. Beef carcasses are traded on the amount of intramuscular fat (marbling) they contain at the 12-13th ribs. However, marbling is a very subjective score. Real-time ultrasound has the capability to predict the actual percent fat in the ribeye muscle which is what the USDA grader is primarily trying to visually evaluate. Several research studies have indicated that the genetic correlation between marbling and fat thickness are very low, meaning that producers can select for increased marbling and not have to be concerned about having animals put on additional external fat. Ultrasound body composition measurements for fall yearling bulls were taken October 28, 2000, yearling bulls will be taken before sale day. We will furnish this information to you in a manner that will be both helpful and informative. A carcass information box accompanies each bull’s pedigree in the catalog (or will be provided at the sale on the supplement sheet). The bulls are in two contemporary groups—fall yearlings and spring calves. The most important thing to consider about the animal’s percent of intramuscular fat is—does the animal rank in the top 1/3 or middle 1/3 of its counterparts. The individual measurements may not be totally accurate, but eventually through sorting sire groups and the use of the EPD system, they can assist us greatly in making selections for intramuscular fat and other carcass traits. Terms & Conditions IDENTIFICATION OF ANIMALS: (1) Each animal sold will have a readable tattoo corresponding to its registration paper. (2) Seller agrees to check all tattoos for accuracy prior to the sale. The buyer has the responsibility for rechecking the tattoos after taking possession and reporting any discrepancies to the seller immediately. (3) All animals to be sold will be identified by their official registration number, their tattoo and their registered name. If nicknames are used, they should be in addition to the other information. (4) The NALF board recommends that when any animal is sold, there is complete disclosure of any retained genetics in the form of pregnant recipients, frozen embryos or frozen semen. REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES: (1) The seller of the animal will submit the original registration certificate with transfer information or an application for registration with transfer information on it so that a certificate can be produced by the Foundation and transferred to the new buyer. The seller must sign the back of the certificate on the application to authorize the transfer. (2) It is the responsibility of the seller to provide the North American Limousin Foundation with the buyer’s complete name, address and membership number (if available) so that we can complete the transfer. It is important that the membership number be given if the buyer is already a member of NALF. (3) It is the seller’s responsibility to provide the certificate or application, and transfer information to NALF within 60 days following the date of sale, and pay transfer and registration fees. TERMS: (1) Terms of all sales are considered to be cash unless credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale between the buyer and the seller. HEALTH: (1) On all animals sold, health tests will be announced at the sale or printed in the sale catalog. It is understood that health papers reflect the condition of the animal at the time of the sale but carry no further guarantee as to the future health of the animal. (2) Buyers having special health requests or who wish to take cattle into states with specific and rigid health regulations should inquire specifically about the health tests required for entry into their state. (3) All females sold are considered to be calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis unless they are otherwise stated in the catalog or announced from the block. It is suggested that verification of vaccination be written on the health certificate. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. It shall be the obligation of the purchaser to see that trucking of the animal and care of the animal are taken care of prior to leaving the sale location. ANNOUNCEMENTS: (1) Any change from the information that is printed in the catalog will be announced from the auction block. (2) All announcements made from the auction block take precedence over the printed catalog. (3) Catalogued lots not selling will be announced prior to the sale. BREEDING GUARANTEE: (1) All animals are guaranteed to be breeders with the exception of: a. calves under twelve months of age; b. in the event of any injury or disease that occurs to the calf after sale or; c. gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser; d. females used in embryo transplant. (2) Bulls are guaranteed to be breeders at the time of sale or at 16 months of age if they are younger than 16 months at time of sale. Any bull which either settles cows by natural service and/or passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian is considered to be fertile. Any guarantee with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be a separate agreement between buyer and seller. (3) Females sold as safe in calf have been examined by a competent veterinarian or other reproductive technician and are so guaranteed to be with 36 • HALL-CHR

calf. Cows with calf at side are considered breeders as indicated by the calf at side. (4) Any guarantee with respect to embryo transplant production shall be a separate agreement between buyer and seller. OPTION AND PRIVILEGE OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: (1) All claims for adjustments or refunds must be made in writing either within six months of the date of the sale or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, whichever occurs last. (2) In the event that an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, that animal must be returned to the farm of the seller in good condition and must have met the health requirements of the original sell state. The seller shall be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of the buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the total purchase price. The return of the purchase price shall in all cases be deemed as full settlement. Any expense incurred in transporting the animal that is claimed to be a nonbreeder shall be the responsibility of the purchaser except that the seller shall be responsible for transportation costs in the excess of the distance between the purchaser’s farm and the location of the sale. If the seller proves the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expenses incurred for transportation. (3) It is the obligation of the buyer and seller to negotiate any settlements on cattle that have not been properly presented at a sale. The selling of an animal constitutes a contract between buyer and sell and is not the responsibility or the right of the North American Limousin Foundation or of the sale management firm to settle disagreements between buyers and sellers of cattle that have not been properly presented. The return of an animal at the expense of the purchaser with a refund of the purchase price made by the seller is in all cases considered to be a complete settlement. Other settlements which are negotiated between buyer and seller may be equitable to cover instances in which cattle are not as represented sale day, but that does not warrant complete return of the animal. BLOOD TYPING FOR PARENTAGE VERIFICATION: All animals sold are guaranteed to be offspring of their recorded parents. Under the rules of NALF, all bulls born after January 1, 1991 that are to be used for artificial insemination or used naturally in a herd other than the owner of record must be parent verified by blood typing to both sire and dam. All females born after July 1, 1987 that are to be used for embryo transplant and all bulls born between July 1, 1987 and December 31, 1990 that are to be used for artificial insemination or used naturally in a herd other than the owner of record must be sire verified through blood samples available to purchasers upon written request by the purchasers so long as written request is received by sellers within 60 days after the date of the sale of the applicable animal.
