Dear Cattlemen: Once again we would like to welcome you to the Eichacker Simmental/Red Angus and JK Angus annual bull sale, and thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to look through our catalog. With the variety and selection of bulls available, there is sure to be something for everyone, depending on what’s important to you and what direction you want your herd to go. Below is an article titled “Food for Thought”, just something to consider when selecting your next herd sire by Marty Ropp. What a great time to be in agriculture, whether it’s grain farming or livestock, barring any regional weather issues. The ag industry has experienced some record prices and income. The cattle industry looks positioned to maintain these levels due to the low cattle numbers across the country and the American people’s appetite for beef. We are excited to be a part of Allied Genetic Resources. It is in its infancy stages and just getting off the ground, but we hope in time the right channels will open up to help you, the commercial cattle producer, capture the full genetic value of the calves from the bulls you purchase. They have recently hired a new staff member, Jenny Stewart, to help coordinate and contact you, the commercial producer. She can be reached at 601-723-0049. The biggest change this year will be in the insurance department. As we have always offered mortality insurance in the past, we are still going to offer it, but at a reduced rate. Because we are offering mortality insurance at a reduced rate we strongly recommend it, especially for the two month period when the bulls are kept at our places. Refer to the insurance on the opposite page for more details. As in many other aspects of your farming and ranching operation, your investment in to your herd bulls can be a major investment and we would like to help you protect it. Just buying a bull or is there more to consider!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

We all know the gravity of your bull selection today becomes a reality when their first calf crop is taken to market. Most consider pricing bulls based on a projection of years of service hopefully 4-8 years barring injury and the calf performance we might expect them to sire. If you don’t keep your own replacement heifers, this makes some sense. If like most, you keep females, the long term effects of this year’s buying decisions on ranch profitability may not be quite as obvious until we break it down based on the long term maternal value traits we are purchasing. Let’s assume your operation purchases 4 bulls this coming spring of 2012. • First calves born in spring of 2013 • First daughters calving in spring of 2015 (First granddaughters calve in 2017) • With any luck 2 or more of these bulls are still breeding at age 7 (2018) • Last calves born sired by these bulls in 2019 • Last calf crop females have their first calves in 2021 (Their first daughters calve in 2023) • In 2022 a substantial share of the 2-7 year old cows are daughters of the bulls purchased 10 years before.

• In the year 2030 there are still a few 11 and 12 year old daughters in your herd sired by the 2012 purchased bull. • In the year 2030 the granddaughters and great granddaughters of the bulls purchased 18 years ago still make up a substantial portion of the genetics of your herd.

I know, most of us don’t like to think about the year 2030. If however your plans are to keep or make the beef business an important part of your families livelihood as far out as 2030, which most of us do, the bulls you purchase this year will still be an important piece of the profits you enjoy or the challenges you are still working through nearly 20 years from now. Sire selection is that important, so use all the tools available to make the best decisions you can every time! So, if you would like to see a snap-shot of your cow herd 10-20 years from now in 2030, you need to only spend some time with the seedstock herd you purchase bulls from. With the exception of a few differences created by environment, what you see is where you are headed! The size, disposition, body condition, udders, feet, calving ease, fertility, longevity, etc of your future cow herd is right there to see. That is why it is so crucial to choose a seedstock source that is headed where you want and need to be.

EPDs: The EPDs listed in the catalog are spring 2012 numbers.. Feeding Arrangements & Delivery: We will offer to

feed the bulls at no charge until April 15, 2012. At that time they will be semen tested and delivered free of charge up to 300 miles. We will assist in making the most economical arrangements possible beyond that. We are not responsible for any injury or death to the bulls while in our care.

Health:

All bulls have been tested negative for BVD/PI. All cows are Johnes free. All genetic defect testing has been completed. Insurance: Insurance will be available sale day. This year we are going to offer mortality insurance at a reduced rate. There will be three options available and all are based off a % of the purchase price of the bull. Reduced rates are: 2 months @ 2%, 6 months @ 3%, 1 year @ 4%, normal rates are 3%, 4%, and 6% respectively. Because we are offering insurance at a reduced rate, we strongly recommend it especially for the 2 month period if the bulls remain at our place. Although the best possible care will be given, bulls will be bulls and anything is possible.

Calving Ease Score: We have put a column in with a calving ease score with 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars with 1 star being harder calving and 4 stars being the easiest calving score. The score is nothing scientific – it is just our opinions of what you could expect taking into consideration, BW, EPD’s, pedigree and structure of the bull. Do not compare the scores between breeds, for instance, don’t expect the same calving ease out of a Simmental with 3 stars as a Red Angus with 3 stars, each breed needs to be considered on their own. JK Angus bulls are marked in their footnotes as heifer bulls if we thought they would work on such. Semen Interest: Eichacker Simmentals will retain 1/4 semen interest in all

bulls sold and JK Angus will be retaining 1/3 semen interest in all bulls sold. Keep in mind, generally this means absolutely nothing, it only comes into play if semen is collected and sold.

Adjusted Scrotal: Actual scrotal measurements were taken 1-21-2012 then

adjusted to a year of age using each breeds own formula for adjusted scrotal measurements. Scrotal measurements for the JK Angus bulls are actual, not adjusted.

Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): 1-21-2012 divided by the days of age.

WDA is the weight of a bull on

123 Day Weight: The 123 day gain was the average daily gain from the weaning weight until 1-21-2012. Homozygous and Heterozygous:

A homozygous black bull when mated to any black cows will give you a black calf. A heterozygous black bull carries a red gene, but when mated to black cows will give you a black calf unless your black cow carries a red gene, then you have a slight chance of getting a red calf, but neither will sire gray calves on black cows. The only way to get a gray calf is on a red cow that carries a dilutor gene. So if you have some colored cows that could carry the dilutor gene, a heterozygous black bull is a better choice because some of the calves that would be gray have the potential to be red, but that’s only if your cows have the dilutor gene and blacks do not carry it.

But what will grab your attention is his power and performance. He is super thick with a lot of bone and was the 2nd highest WW bull ratioing 119, then the 5th for YW with a ratio of 114. His dam has a great udder and was loaded with milk.

It is calculated by using several factors including 1) fat thickness, 2) kidney, pelvic and heart fat 3) hot carcass weight 4) rib-eye area. A (-) EPD is better. Marbling (MRB) marbling score Indexes: The last two columns in the EPD section are fairly new to the Simmental Breed, but interesting, they are $ indexes. Though EPD’s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes blend EPD’s and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. All Purpose Index (API): It’s exactly what is says, all purpose, this index includes every trait that can be calculated, calving ease, lbs at weaning and yearling, keeping replacements back, milking ability and stayability, then the calf crop. It took into consideration some being retained as replacements, then the rest being fed out and sold grade & yield. Terminal Index (TI): This index is to be used if all calves are going to a feedlot. It evaluates a sire for use only on mature cows with all calves put on feed and sold grade and yield. No other factors were figured in. Using API and TI, first determine which index to use, if you’re breeding heifers and keeping replacements, use API, if all calves are going to the feedlot and finished, then use TI.
