Fall 2014 Reports President’s Report Well I hope you enjoyed your summer, as brief as it seemed to be. Weaning time should find a great deal of excitement as record prices soar all over North America. We have had a busy year which has had it’s share of turmoil however. It would seem we have found our rock in the CMAA office - Heidi Voegeli - Bleiker. I urge you to pick up the phone and get to know her over the coming months. I would like to commend the Manitoba Maine-Anjou Association for an outstanding CMAA Annual General Meeting. The venue and weather were absolutely stunning.

OFFICE MAnager’s Report Hello Everyone, I hope everyone had a great summer and a successful haying season. It seems to me that fall harvest is almost in the air with the cooler days we had this week here in Alberta. The Annual General Meeting was held in August in Manitoba. I’m sure everyone that attended had a great time meeting and socializing with members across Canada. The Board of Directors would like to see more members attending; remember the people that show up run the organization. Thanks to the Manitoba Association for hosting this year’s Annual General Meeting on behalf of the Canadian MaineAnjou Association.

Daily work is coming into the office; transfers and registrations, the office is up to date again and can work in a timely manner. Some members also called in to introduce themselves and that is much appreciated. As for numbers we are pretty much on track and that is good to see. A Facebook page has been created to be able to connect with members on their smartphones. Watch for updates and ‘Like’ us. At the moment we are in the process in getting quotes in for the reprint of the Breeders directory. We would like to have the updated version ready in October. I urge you to reply to the mail out you will receive by the end of August or early in September. Please get back to the office with your complete contact information by September 20th. We would like to have the directory as accurate as possible. You can fax or email your information to the office. Good advice, do it when you read it, so it is not put aside to do later and will be forgotten. If we don’t hear from you we will use the information that is in the current directory. Maybe I should introduce myself to you too. Since June, I’m working in your office on Tuesdays and

good bye to some board members too. Thank you very much to Barry Hall, John Hanbidge and Doug Roxburgh for their time and commitment to the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association. It will be an exciting year on the board with our EPD evaluation moving forward, a new SNP conversion project underway (watch your mailbox!), and an exciting new board eager to get to work. A new position has been created on the CMAA Board - Junior Liasion to further encourage and promote our Junior program. Kody Roddick has taken on this position and I encourage young breeders to contact Kody. I look forward to visiting with you down the road this fall. Wednesdays. Your previous manager, Lois Chivilo has been very helpful to get me started, but there is still more to learn. Thanks for your patience and the help from the Board of Directors. Here is a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Switzerland and moved to Canada (Quebec) in 1987. There we farmed for seven years and our four children were born in this beautiful province. In 1994 we moved to Alberta and purchased a family dairy farm. To get to know the industry better I was always involved within the dairy industry; first as secretary and treasurer of a local club and in 1997 I became the secretary and treasurer of the Provincial Holstein Association. In 2011 I went full time to school at the Red Deer College for five month to obtain the Multimedia Web design certificate. The duty of the Holstein secretary includes the update of their website and I also publish and design all the promotional items for the Holstein Association. In 2016 the Alberta Holstein Association will be hosting the National Convention in Banff. I have been invited to chair a committee and will also be in charge of publishing the convention magazine. As you can see I like to keep myself busy and love to do a variety of things. This means that I have to be very organized to keep up with all my responsibilities. In my little spare time I do enjoy all kinds of outdoor sports and love to travel to other countries. It will be a pleasure to meet more of the Associations members and I will do my best to provide quality work. Don’t hesitate to contact me if there are any issues. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for hiring me and for their help to get me started. CMAA Annual General Meeting August 8 - 10, 2014, Portage La Prairie, MB The Canadian Maine-Anjou Association Annual General Meeting was hosted by the Manitoba Maine-Anjou Association on the weekend of August 8-10th in sunny Portage La Prairie, MB. The weekend began with fellowship and comraderie at the hospitality suite on Friday evening. The Annual General Meeting began Saturday morning until mid afternoon. New and old business was discussed amicably. The board welcomed some new directors: Myles Hansen, SK, Craig Cameron, AB and Clayton Elliot, AB. Many thanks to our retiring directors: John Hanbidge, Barry Hall and Doug Roxburgh for their commitment to the CMAA Board of Directors and the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association. Following a delicious BBQ Supper, all were entertained by a guest speaker. On Sunday, everyone was invited to tour the cattle herds at Section 19 Cattle Co., at Portage La Prairie and Plumas, MB with a stop for a delicious lunch along the way. As the afternoon progressed, members slowly started to head for home or their next destination. Thank you again to the Manitoba Maine-Anjou Association for a lovely weekend with good company, good food and good cattle!

Alberta Association News submitted by Kevin Shuckburgh I hope everyone out there has enjoyed a great summer. The day in the cattle business everyone said to hang on for looks like it is upon us! With calf prices on target to shatter previous records we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Enjoy these good times and the good people in the business. Having attended spring jackpot shows, the Calgary Stampede, and numerous other shows I can honestly say I am seeing more and more Maine influence each and every year. The Alberta Jr Maine Anjou Show and Summer Synergy were great opportunities for juniors to showcase their Maine projects. Thank you to all of the Sponsors, judges, organizers, and parents. I would also like to thank these juniors for the strong breed representation they award us. As breeders we need to continue to support these functions as they are more than just cattle shows. The marketing, judging, networking, speaking, and social skills being gained by these young people is tremendous. Its time to gear up for our second edition of the Alberta Maine Anjou calendar. Year one was a success with the calendar being mailed out across Canada to the membership as well as many being given out to commercial breeders. There are a few card sized ads still available which gets you a free calendar. Its a good deal and the proceeds go towards the 4-H and junior programs. Our focus on 4-H continues and is headed up by Della Whelan. The numbers of Maine projects continues to increase as do the number of club and district champions. Thanks to Della for all of her hard work in ensuring prizes are given for every project. If you have a Maine project or know of a young person with one contact Della, myself, or any of our board members to ensure they are rewarded. As we gear up for the Maine Anjou show at Farmfair this fall we are pleased to announce the addition of a Maintainer Show. Classes will include calf, yearling, and mature animals in both Female and Bull Divisions. Cattle ž % and less carrying Canadian Maine Anjou papers and tattoo’s are eligible. Saskatchewan Assoc. News submitted by Carolyn McCormack What a great time to be involved in cattle! With unheard of prices in all sectors of the cattle industry, there is finally some optimism. The Saskatchewan Maine-Anjou Association has undergone some major changes in the past year to the association and it’s members. The SMAA secretary Megan Baillargeon has resigned and we thank her for the time she dedicated to the SMAA. The Board has also experienced some changes and has vacant director positions. While the SMAA struggles to maintain a functional board we are hopeful for a resurrgence of members and Maine-Anjou cattle in Saskatchewan. The Agribition Maine-Anjou show will be held on November 28, 2014 at Canadian Western Agribition. Come on out and support the show! submitted by Patrick Johnson Manitoba held the Canadian AGM in Portage la Prairie, MB on Aug 9th and 10th 2014. Meetings went well and had a good attendance from ON, MB, SK and AB. A tour followed and we were able to see a good herd of cattle at Cam and Tracey Woods farm, I would like to thank everyone for attending the meetings and Woods for hosting the tour. In Manitoba we handed out 4-H tokens again this year and by all reports the Maine -Anjou did very well in steer heifer carcass and high gaining classes. Manitoba held two bull sales this spring along with several selling private treaty sales. If anyone is looking for seedstock or 4-H projects this fall feel free to contact any of our members or directors.

OMAA Provincial Maine-Anjou Online Sale November 27 - 30, 2014 - Cattle In Motion
The Ontario Maine-Anjou Association has made it a priority to have a venue available for individuals to purchase Maine-Anjou cattle this year! We have constructed a committee to develop a successful online sale to be held November 27th-30th, 2014. ~ The sale will be held 100% online through Cattle In Motion from November 27th-30th, 2014. ~ All sale entries will be publicized through Cattle In Motion and through the sale committee’s various avenues of publication. ~ All entries will be pictured and/or videoed at one of a 2-3 central locations throughout the province. There will be adequate space for 3-4 pictures for each entry to be posted. It should be noted that all picturing and videography should be completed with cattle in clean, tidy condition. ~ Semen and Embryos may also be consigned. ~ Initial estimates of cost will be $200/entry. There will not be any additional deductions of commission. This estimate is based on having 30 total sale entries. A final price point will be calculated once the number of entries has been finalized. MAINES SHINE AT SUMMER SYNERGY! The 2014 edition of Summer Synergy brought together 141 junior competitors from four provinces showing the very best in beef, dairy and sheep. Held in Olds, Alberta, in conjunction with the Provincial Beef Heifer Show, the week of competition culminated with over $68,000.00 in Calgary Stampede International Youth Livestock scholarships being awarded. The 56 recipients were presented on stage to the grandstand audience during Calgary Stampede Showdown Sunday rodeo finals. Champions were declared from 215 head in eight beef breeds in both purebred and commercial divisions, with those animals moving on to the Supreme Show in the Stampede’s new Agrium Western Events Centre. Prior to the start of the 31st UFA Steer Classic, the proud junior exhibitors led their champions in under the spotlights. While the MaineTainer champion was not able to repeat as the 2014 Supreme Champion, many of those in attendance and watching on-line had picked her as the winner. The Maine-Anjou breed has always been well represented at Summer Synergy, small entry numbers and no sponsorship had dictated they be shown in the All Other Breeds classes. Through the generous support of breeders and the CMAA, 14 juniors were afforded the opportunity to exhibit their 16 head in the 1st MaineTainer show. Organizers are looking forward to offering classes again next year in the purebred division. All age classes were represented, featuring a very competitive yearling class of eight head. Judge Clay Carlson, winner of the National Western Stock Show Livestock Judging competition, and a student at Colorado State University, chose the 2 year old champion as his Grand Champion Female. Proud Girl, exhibited by Chase Miller, Cremona, AB, sired by Untouchable out of a Maine dam, was a popular champion with a One and Only bull calf at side. Reserve Champion came from the yearling division, a BFW Mitten Man Q35P daughter, KCM Moon Struck 2A, exhibited by Kyle Dodgson, Sangudo AB. Our Maine-Anjou exhibitors featured prominently in the skills competitions and scholarships were awarded to Alexis Couch, Justin Couch, Ashlynn Duffy, Heidi Tymko, Jared Couch, Zach Caukill and Kyle Dodgson. Congratulations to our aggregate winners: Junior Champion-Alexis Couch; Intermediate Champion-Heidi Tymko, Reserve-Justin Couch; Senior Champion-Kyle Dodgson, Reserve-Jared Couch. L’il Bits... William (Blaine) Johnson
Sept 27 1933 - April 26 2014
Blaine Johnson was born Sept. 27, 1933 on the farm northwest of Killarney to parents John and Vera Johnson. Blaine attended agriculture school in Brandon, MB and upon completion began his long career of farming. He married Eva Hicks July 16, 1955 and they had 5 children together - Byron, Harley, Debbie, Darris and Patrick. Cattle were always a very important part of Blaine’s life; he began raising polled Herefords in 1952. Blaine showed and sold cattle at Agribition, Ag-ex, Toronto Royal and several other show and sales. Blaine also judged many shows; including many 4-H shows, State shows in North Dakota and Minnesota, the Royal and CNE in Toronto and Maritime fall show. Blaine was a director on Manitoba and Canadian Hereford Association, serving as President and was a delegate for the 9th World Hereford Confernce in New Zealand and Australia. Blaine starting breeding Maine-Anjou in early nineties and bought cattle from several provinces in Canada and also from USA. Blaine also served on the Canadian Board and attended several AGM’s and tours. Blaine enjoyed working with cattle and all the people he met through the cattle business and helped with the fall roundup in 2013. Blaine is survived by his wife Eva, children Byron(Roberta) Harley(Linda), Debbie(David) Darris(Michelle) Patrick(Connie), 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

VACCINE SELECTION for CATTLE by Roy Lewis DVM
There are a multitude of diseases to consider vaccinating for and these diseases come in a multitude of vaccine combinations with different types of administration routes (subcutaneous or intramuscular) as well as different dosage amounts (usually two- five cc). These possibilities should all be considered when choosing vaccines. First and foremost use the advice of your local veterinarian. He/she will have chosen the most appropriate vaccines for your geographic area in the best combinations available to minimize the amount of needles to be given. Veterinarians are an invaluable resource when it comes to vaccine selection, a very critical point of biosecurity for your farm. Vaccine companies, generally speaking, are producing more and more vaccines in multiple combinations. This is because there are now several diseases, which are routinely, vaccinated for on most farms. By having less choice it is less confusing to producers, less needles are necessary and the cost per disease treated actually comes down. When it comes to the difference between reputable pharmaceutical companies producing vaccines for the same diseases we are often splitting hairs as to their effectiveness (efficacy). Veterinarians make the choices as to which vaccine lines to carry based on several things: effectiveness, route of administration, dosage amount, dose sizing per container. Availability, price, timing of administration and service given by the sales force are all considered when making the selection. All reputable companies have data to support the effectiveness of their vaccine over others. We are really almost comparing apples to apples when comparing the numerous vaccines available from the reputable companies. Again your veterinarian will know which products compare favourably to one another. A few misconceptions are changing vaccine lines and the thought of needing to start the whole vaccine protocol over again. Different vaccine lines will generally booster the immune response from a previous vaccination from a different line of vaccines. Of course the diseases in the vaccines must be the same. The important thing to remember whether it be from previous vaccination or exposure to the real disease revaccination stimulates the bodies immune system to develop further protection from sickness.. Certain geographic areas in Canada have a higher incidence of specific diseases and vaccination may be considered. An example of this would be Clostridium Hemolyticum in west central Alberta. Horses are vaccinated for rabies in certain regions of eastern Canada. Herds that have had prior history of leptospirosis may vaccinate and in outbreaks of Anthrax the contact herd as well as neighbouring herds may be vaccinated in subsequent years. 28 Maine Mail Fall 2014
Other diseases, which are reportable in Canada such as, foot and mouth disease or brucellosis, even though a vaccine exists for them, they are not allowed to be used in Canada. That’s because we are free of these diseases and want to keep the disease out. If we were to vaccinate the protection the vaccine affords could mask symptoms and carrier animals might develop. Tests for disease exposure often cannot differentiate between exposure to the real disease or vaccination so eradication is therefore difficult. Now in most herds across western Canada vaccination for the diseases of IBR, BVD (type 1 and 2), PI3, clostridials (blackleg group 7 or 8 way or now 9 way), histophilus( the former hemophilus, and BRSV are pretty much commonplace. For young calves up to and past weaning the two respiratory pathogens Pasteurella and Mannheimia are becoming commonplace. If we are careful how we mix and match these antigens calves can get immunized with all these antigens in two needles. Scours vaccination is becoming commonplace for the breeding animals in especially the larger herds. A multitude of other vacccines, foot rot especially in the breeding bulls, pinkeye vaccines and leptospirosis vaccines are being more commonly used if necessary. The appropriate timing is critical in order to get maximum benefit from your investment in the vaccination process. A perfect example of this would be the current scour vaccines. Each company has a different concept as to how challenge occurs. As a result in order to achieve maximal benefit the timing of vaccination before calving is critical and varies considerably between the different products. Some can be given as short as two weeks before calving where others must be about two to three months before calving in order to achieve optimal results. It is extremely important to know which vaccine will fit in best with your management and processing schedule. Also storage of vaccines (almost all need to be refrigerated) and handling when administered are critical to getting the maximum effect. Freezing or overheating of the vaccine before administration cannot be tolerated. There are no magic bullets of vaccination replacing good management. Proper nutrition, parasite control and sanitation go along way to preventing disease itself. All this augmented with a properly thought out and implemented vaccination program will severely reduce the incidence of those diseases on your farm. Talk to your veterinarian as new products and ways of administration are coming out all the time.
