Feed efficiency terminology has been batted around for decades. The beef
industry has compiled mountains of anecdotal information, tried many systems, researched encouraging theories, all in an attempt to quantify and compare feed efficiency. Almost everyone connected to the production of beef recognizes the importance of finally getting closer to unlocking the genetic mystery of feed efficiency. Anyone interested in Charolais genetics or feed efficiency research is invited to join us Thursday, August 22, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center, Urbana, Illinois. AICA is hosting Charolais on Feed: The Genetics of Feed Efficiency Field Day. Five of the beef industry’s leading feed efficiency researchers will headline the event. The overarching goal of the field day is to present the most comprehensive feed efficiency information to date to anyone willing to invest the time to hear it. The feed efficiency research is in the second year of the project and
stated, “In the feedlot, feed efficiency is critical. Whether or not a pen of cattle is profitable is based on the value of the cattle when they are sold and the cost of production.” Loy went on to say, “Feed efficiency, aside from the cost of the feed itself, is the factor that drives the cost of production. Those two factors are used together for cattle feeders to determine what they will pay for a pen of cattle and ultimately whether that pen of cattle is profitable.” We know cattle that do not gain efficiently also do not grade well. Research that studies a beef animal’s genetic ability to add red meat efficiently and produce a quality carcass is incredibly valuable up and down the food chain. Dr. Matt Spangler, during an interview for an edition of NCBA’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen featuring the research project stated, “We hope to come out with more accurate EPDs or EPDs for traits we didn’t have EPDs for. The exciting thing about having a selection tool for feed intake is

The research is being done by 21 scientists from 11 different institutions, several producers and breed associations. The research will ultimately analyze individual feed efficiency data, on a molecular level, on 8,000 head representing eight breeds. The research design will eventually pave the way for the beef industry, particularly the seedstock sector, to develop genetic selection tools that enable producers to accurately improve feed efficiency. Dr. Jonathan Beever, Department of Animal Sciences, Univ. of Illinois will discuss the basics of genomic information. Dr. Matt Spangler, Univ. of Nebraska, will discuss The Weight Traits Project. Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State Univ., will present the most current genomic-enhanced EPDs and selection indexes. Dr. Dan Shike, Univ. of Illinois will discuss the feed efficiency projects currently being conducted at the university. Dr. Jerry Taylor, Univ. of Missouri, will present the most current information regarding the National Program for Genetic Improvement of Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle. Dr. Dan Loy, Director of Iowa Beef Center, Iowa State University, recently

Charolais on Feed Field Day
AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary
Jimmy L. Albert, a longtime resident of Kenedy, Texas, passed away, Monday, June 24, 2013, in the Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Kenedy, Texas, at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 1 day. Jimmy was born on February 23, 1942 in Floresville, Texas, the son of Leroy Albert and Evelyn Reinhardt Albert. On July 7, 1962, Jimmy married the love of his life, Dillie Schroeder in Kenedy, Texas. In his early days of raising cattle Jimmy began working at the Karnes County Auction Barn. He worked his way up through his time there to becoming a partner in the business then later becoming a full time owner for over 35 years. After owning the auction barn for 35 plus years, he sold it with the intent to retire. Jimmy’s heart and soul was in in ranching. He served different capacities on many different boards; he has dedicated his life to the youth of agriculture. From 1981 up until 1993 he was a friend of the 4-H Organization and in 1990 he received honor for outstanding commitment to the children of ADA by Wilson Hospital Cattleman’s Roundup. Later in, 1994 he was honored by the San Antonio Livestock Expo Calf Scramble for ten years of service. Jimmy has held the title of president for the Kenedy Stock shows and along with other ranchers, was largely responsible for helping to create the local county stock

show so time ago. He was always quick to pass credit on to others, but was proud to observe the accomplishments of tomorrow’s future. Jimmy was also a recipient of the Champion Exotic Bull Title in 2012, a Director of Area 5 American International Charolaise Association, President of Evergreen VWCD and most notably a recipient of the 2012 Kenedy Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Agriculture Award. Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Dillie Schroeder Albert; his sisters Linda Miller and husband Ron of Breckenridge, Colorado and Carolyn Kruse and husband Lawrence of Pleasanton; his grandchildren Heather Cook and husband Bryan, Nicole Loest and husband Donovan, Joey Schaefer and Afton Bauer and husband Jimmy and his great-grandchildren, Jayden Loest, Clayson Loest and Allie Bauer. Mr. Albert is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Debbie Albert. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial be made to The Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital; 8026 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78229. Obituary Chance Payne Clifton, 17, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 21, 2013, due to a fatal car accident. Funeral services were June 25 at the First Baptist Church, Colleyville. Chance was born in North Richland Hills and from his childhood has always been a high energy overachiever who brought laughter and joy to everyone he encountered. Chance placed his faith in Jesus Christ as a young boy and demonstrated godly character in everything he set his mind to do. As a son, he brought delight and joy to his parents. As a student he was incredibly popular at Birdville High School and was a leader among his peers. As a friend, he was funny, loyal, outgoing and kind. As a young man he was responsible and highly respected. And as a football player he was a tenacious, “hold nothing back” defensive back that earned him First Team All-District recognition. Chance lived life to the fullest. He loved being with friends, driving his truck, fishing, working on cars and boats, riding and roping, playing football and making people laugh. Chance left his mark on the Birdville community. And the Birdville community left their mark by wrapping white ribbons around trees and lampposts all over town. The family would like to thank everyone in the Birdville community for their outpouring of love. There is no doubt that Chance lived his life with a smile on his face and joy in his heart and by God’s grace we will do the same. Chance was preceded in death by grandfathers, John Davis and Donald Clifton. Survivors: Parents, Greg and Tina Clifton; sister, Emily Vanderpool and husband, Kurtis; sister, Carly Clifton; grandmother, Frances DavisPeck and husband, John; grandmother, Dixie Clifton; aunt, Carol and uncle, Donnie Warner; aunt, Donna Clifton; uncle, Roy and aunt, Sherrie Clifton; numerous cousins and friends.

Hello everyone! My name is Abbey Thiel and I am serving as your Area 2 director. I am a junior at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, studying finance and international business. I grew up on a ranch in rural South Dakota and was fortunate enough to get involved with the AIJCA from a young age. I love to think back on the years and all of the great friendships and memories that have been made as a member of this great program..
Q: What are some of your strengths that aid you
at being a Jr. Board Director?
A: While it is sometimes difficult to pick out our own strengths, I believe my ability to relate and communicate with people has been an asset while serving on the board. Communication is crucial to discussions with other directors, fundraising, networking with industry professionals, encouraging young kids – the list goes on and on. I am thankful for the many opportunities I have had at past Junior Nationals to practice both my public speaking and interpersonal communication. Q: Which contest have you enjoyed participating
in most at Charolais Jr. Nationals?
A: Anyone who knows me well knows that I live for quiz bowl! Maybe that is the nerd coming out in me, but I sure do love the thrill of buzzing in to answer a question or two. Q:

A: I am privileged to say that I have had many inspirational
people invest in my life. However, two that are particularly important go by the name of Mom and Dad. They have been a constant encouragement and rock in my life, showing me how to live out my faith, work hard, love others well and focus on the things that matter in life. They challenge me to dream big and support me in my endeavors. I can’t thank them enough.

Outside of showing cattle, what hobbies do you have?
A:
I love any activities that allow me to spend time with my friends and loved ones – fishing, being outside, playing intramurals, dancing – I like it all.
A: I am definitely anticipating a great fall! Academically,
I will be getting into my upper level finance courses and am excited to see what’s in store. Equally important, I am ready to catch up with all of my friends, return to my responsibilities in Chi Omega and my church, and finally to see those Baylor Bears back out on the football field!
Q:
What has one of your favorite moments at a Charolais Junior National?
A: Boy, there have been a lot of great moments! I have a soft spot in my heart for the water fights we used to have after the Friday shows at Junior Nationals. The slideshows at the banquet are also personal favorites. Q:
Where do you see the Charolais breed heading in the future?
A: One of the greatest strengths of the Charolais breed is demand in the commercial bull market. I see the Charolais breed embracing this role. We will continue to provide pound-adding genetics to the commercial cattleman and put a feed-efficient animal in the feedlot, as the industry takes on the challenge of feeding a growing world. Q: How has being a Jr. Board Director affected you as a person? A: Being on the board is a great way to serve your fellow
AIJCA members. I have gotten to be closer friends with everyone on the board and it has been fun to see what we all bring to the table. They help you to see a different side of things and are good for a laugh.

Dealing with Heat Stress By Heather Smith Thomas
Heat stress, and death loss from heat stress, costs cattle producers millions of dollars each year. Hot weather is hard on baby calves, fat cattle and affects fertility and reproduction rates. CALVES - Dr. Ram Kasimanickam, Washington State University, says heat stress in calves can lead to dehydration. Producers can use a scoring system to identify the degree of dehydration. “It is important to determine how severely the calf is dehydrated. If it’s from 6 to 8% the calf will have tight skin, dry mouth, weak suckling reflex, and sunken eyes. If it is more severe, at 8 to 10%, the eyes will be more dry and sunken, the mouth will be dry, and pulse rate will be increased,” he says. The heart is beating faster, trying to service the body’s needs with not enough fluid in the circulatory system. “With extreme heat stress there is 10 to 14% dehydration, and the calf will not be responsive to stimuli and has cold extremities. It will slip into a coma and die.” Calves impacted by heat stress need additional fluids, supplemented with electrolytes. Severe cases need IV fluid. “Heat will interfere with growth rate of calves as well. Energy needs will be diverted to tackle the stress rather than being utilized for growth. The long-term affect will be stunted growth, delay in puberty, and perhaps some impact on reproductive performance,” says Kasimanickam. FEEDLOT ANIMALS – Animals being grown/fattened for slaughter are very susceptible to heat stress because they have more body mass than a younger or leaner animal and more problems dissipating body heat. “Dr. Terry Mader in Nebraska did some heat stress studies looking at diet,” says Kasimanickam. “Dr. Mader came up with recommendations on feeding systems and diets, to mitigate heat affect. He had 3 groups of steers in one study. He offered one group 60% roughage in a finishing diet, free choice. Another group he offered 85 to 95% roughage and the third group 28% roughage diet. The cattle with the 28% roughage diet had lower respiration rate and significantly lower body temperature in hot conditions than the other two groups.
Cattle cannot adequately dissipate heat produced during the fermentation digestion of roughages.” “Core body temperature usually peaks a couple hours after the peak in ambient temperature, and it may take another 6 hours to dissipate the heat load. Obese cattle take even longer to dissipate the heat.” If air temperature doesn’t drop much at night, these cattle may not get down to normal body temperature before morning. If hot weather lasts several days, the rise in body temperature is cumulative and they eventually suffer severe heat stress. Adequate water should be provided so all cattle have access. Otherwise some of the dominant animals may stand near the water source and won’t allow the timid animals to get a drink. “It is also advisable to not handle, move or work cattle in extreme heat. It’s also wise to avoid having cattle waiting in the processing area for more than 30 minutes. Standing in confined groups will add to the heat stress,” Kasimanickam says. REPRODUCTION PROBLEMS – Hot weather can reduce conception rates. “The stress will increase cortisol levels, and this in turn alters the hormones which are important for reproduction. During hot weather there will be reduced ovulation,” says Kasimanickam. “Heat stress can also affect early embryonic development if the cow does become pregnant. This may cause some additional infertility issues. When you observe the conception and pregnancy rate on a farm, you might notice the problem occurring not during the hot months, but a few months later, since it takes time to show these effects. The gametes (in both the cow and the bull) produced during the hot months will be affected and it takes about 90 to 130 days for the development of these gametes. This is why we may see the impact later, such as in the fall, rather than during the hot months,” he says.

Don’t be left behind We need your sire information
AICA has been working this last winter and spring to build a research database of 50K genotypes. This database will allow AICA to incorporate DNA into genomically enhanced EPDs. In an effort to move forward with this project, we are encouraging members to request DNA kits on progeny proven sires or highly informative dams. We are requesting sires with the following numbers: Birth weight and weaning weight EPDS with an accuracy value of at least .35 (not pedigree estimates) and a minimum of back solution EPDs for carcass traits. If you have bulls with the above qualifications, please contact me at: mwegner@ charolaisusa.com. The kits will be mailed to you from AICA; you’ll send a sample to the GeneSeek lab. There will not be a fee to our members for bulls meeting the above criteria. The samples can be tail hair, but in most cases the sample will be semen. The semen does not need to be kept cold when shipped, but be sure to pack it in a way that the straw won’t break in the mail. AICA is committed to funding the 50K test for 1000 animals to establish a research database of progeny proven sires. Don’t be left behind, contact us to request kits. All nominations of breed leading lots with exceptional buyer appeal will be evaluated by the National Sale Committee, the sale manager and the AICA staff for final selections to be accepted into the National Charolais Sale. The sale catalog information deadline is October 15th and the National Sale catalog will be printed in the December 2013 issue of the Charolais Journal. There is a $300 per lot catalog fee for a ½ page full color space in the catalog and a standard sale commission (The last two National Sales were 12.5%).

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age.
