The venues change. The message doesn’t. The lessons that increase in value over time.
Almost every year about this time, much of livestock media seem to touch on the value of our youth involved in agriculture. Summers are full of livestock youth events. Every major beef breed in America pulls out all the stops to showcase its youngsters and their steer and heifer projects. For those folks outside of production agriculture, it’s likely perceived as those “country kids get to come to the city.” The fact is, the cities’ leaders recognize the economic benefit of hundreds of families converging on a publicly funded venue for an entire week. The venues have definitely changed. County fair barns served us well for generations. Those old open-air barns have been replaced by expansive, modern, climate-controlled multi-purpose facilities in major cities. There’s media coverage. In short, even though the urban and rural disconnect has never been greater, our national youth events command more attention than ever before. One can easily talk about the obvious lessons learned during a week of intense competition in the show ring, speaking contests and state team competitions.

Those impressionable years spent caring for an animal until it fulfills its life cycle and becomes the most significant source of protein for billions of people simply cannot be measured. Studies indicate, as a population, we are at least two generations removed from agriculture. Production agriculture represents approximately 2% of our U.S. Census. In other words, 2% of America produces enough food to feed all of America and much of the rest of the planet. We can no longer assume the average consumer knows or cares about food production or the dynamics of a very complex system. Consider the fact that not a single citizen born in America has ever had to stand in line and worry about famine or food shortage. Realizing many will disagree, but the beef industry may be better served if our youth don’t return to the farm or ranch. The beef industry, as well as all of

Every young child wanting a new puppy or a kitten gets the same “you have to take care of it” lecture. Once the pet arrives and the new wears off, who really is responsible for care? Now think back to the discussion, as a young, first-time junior, the cost to purchase your first show project. Just maybe your parent(s) actually took you to the bank and you had the discussion with the banker. The first lesson about borrowing money, managing the cost, and repaying the loan is one we never, ever forget. How many city kids have that same opportunity or even recognize the experience as one of value? The day comes, your first show project arrives and you realize you ARE responsible for the care and wellbeing of this animal. In hindsight, maybe we didn’t recognize this right away. But, we do remember the meeting with the banker and visions of what happens when you don’t make your loan payments on time! Financial management, grooming, animal welfare, animal nutrition, time management, patience and economics are just a few of the many lessons learned. Considering the current economic environment, the unfortunate reality is the fact very few of our beef industry youth will actually return to the ranch. Hopefully, these bright minds will find success in an ag-related profession and continue to make valuable contributions. At a minimum we can rest assured the tangible and intangible lessons arm them with facts, objectivity, critical thinking skills and
production agriculture, needs an entire army of skilled communicators with the willingness and commitment to passionate, informed debate. The next generation of ag youth must communicate the importance of the beef industry and food production to an anonymous, uninformed or misinformed consumer. The next generation must be armed with sound facts based in science. The 2012 AIJCA Junior National, hosted by the Nebraska Charolais Association, was represented by 24 states, 255 juniors and more than 400 head of cattle. Throughout the week, an estimated 1,500 people were in attendance. On behalf of AICA and AIJCA, we would like to sincerely thank the city of Grand Island and the Nebraska State Fair Grounds for their generosity and hospitality. The venue is spectacular and the entire management team helped make our experience memorable and extremely positive. The venues for the next two years have been determined. The 2013 AIJCA Junior National will be held at Texarkana, jointly hosted by the Texas and Arkansas Charolais Associations, followed by Hutchinson, Kansas, hosted by the Kansas Charolais Association in 2014. No doubt the venues for our “summer of youth” events will change. Hopefully, the message never does. The beef industry depends upon it.

AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

AI sires used “out of herd” must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. Check the bull’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. AICA rules require signatures on bulls you do not own. Signatures can be submitted on-line, fax, mail or e-mail. AICA Offers Online Advertising and Marketing Opportunities The AICA website (www.charolaisusa.com) offers banner ads on the website to advertise your Charolais operation or upcoming sale. The banner ads can be linked directly to your website or sale catalog. The ads are $250 per month or $200 for two weeks. Normally, the ads will be put on the website within 2 days after submission. Want to reach your customers directly? Email blasts are now offered to drop your advertisement straight into the inbox of thousands! Email blasts work great for upcoming sales or any ad that runs in the Charolais Journal. In order to be eligible for an email blast, you must run no less than a full page ad in the Journal. Blasts are $400 in addition to the cost of the ad in the Charolais Journal. Let the Journal staff know when placing your Journal ads if you wish to do an email blast. Genomics and Improved Accuracy Report performance and reproductive information.
The
greatest benefit regarding genomics when included in future EPD genetic evaluations will be the increased accuracy on young non-parent animals when compared to conventional or current evaluations. Accuracy of genomic enhanced EPD however will be reliant on the accuracy of the AICA performance data base. The more accurate the AICA database the greater the opportunity to improve and sustain accuracy through genomic enhanced EPD. Regardless of including genomics into our genetic evaluations we can nevertheless improve accuracy today through existing programs. Increases in artificial insemination to widely used high accuracy sires between herds and contemporary groups both within and across years improves connectedness. Today, approximately 25% of all calves registered in AICA are A.I. calves; an increase in the use of A.I. can result in increased accuracy. More timely and complete reporting of data to be included in genetic evaluations will result in increased accuracy of selection. Getting calves included in the AICA genetic evaluation as soon as possible increases the accuracy of selection before calves have been sold and/or exposed or before selection and/or breeding decisions have been made. Turn in more yearling weights. Yearling weights are currently reported at a rate of about 25% of the total number of weaning weights that are reported annually. While many calves are sold from the herd shortly after weaning there remains a significant number of yearling weights that could be reported and thereby increasing the accuracy of weaning and traits associated with yearling aged calves. Additionally, when yearling weights are collected there are also opportunities to collect measurements of scrotal circumference and ultrasound measurements for ribeye area, rib fat thickness, rump fat and IMF scores which are used in the calculation of carcass EPD. And finally, accurate and complete reproductive and breeding information through the WHR program will not only help breeders identify the most productive cows in their breeding herds it will also assist AICA to identify genomic markers in the future for important reproductive traits; again increasing accuracy of selection. Reporting performance and reproductive information to be included in national cattle evaluations and for use in research programs has been and will continue to be the cornerstone for improved genetic selection.

Charolais and Charolais influenced steers and heifers competed in this 44th annual event designed to emphasize the economic aspects of commercial cattle feeding and the beef cattle industry. In the Carcass Show competition, Schurrtop Angus & Charolais, Farnam, Neb., had the Champion Steer Carcass (Live Wt.: 1,247 lbs.; HCW: 796 lbs.; BED Index: 122.7; REA: 15.7 sq. in.; YG: 1.5; MB Score: MT 40; QG: CH); and the Reserve Champion Heifer Carcass (Live Wt.: 1,199 lbs.; HCW: 767 lbs.; BED Index: 129; REA: 16 sq. in.; YG: 1.29; MB Score: MT 70; QG: CH.) Jerry Frank Craft, 61, of Belton, S.C., husband of Wanda Jarrard Craft, died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at AnMed Health Center. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of Faye Simpson Staton and the late Frank Hammond Craft. He was a member of Barkers Creek Baptist Church. He was retired from BP Amoco of Greenville and was currently the executive director of WebbCraft Family Foundation and the head coach of the BHP Girls Softball program. He was a Graduate of BHP High School, Class of 1969, and Greenville Technical College. Surviving are his wife of the

Charolais Juniors Recognized as BEST Winners The 2011-2012 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) Program wrapped up on June 2 with its Annual Awards Banquet held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Champion AOB Steer, honors went to Jonathan Barrett of Coolville, Ohio, with his Charolais-Cross. His steer, Diesel, was born on 3-2-11. Reserve Champion AOB Steer, a CharolaisCross, was exhibited by Logan Trbovich, Waynesburg, Ohio. His steer, Kass 202Y, was born 3-25-11. BEST is a youth program of the OCA that recognizes Ohio’s junior beef exhibitors through a series of shows. Juniors who participate in these sanctioned shows earn points for their placing at each show. The OCA BEST program promotes educating Ohio’s juniors about the beef industry’s issues and rewards the successful accomplishments and hard work of those junior beef producers.

Hi everyone! I am Megan Fink and I am honored to serve as
your President for the upcoming year. I have shown Charolais for 12 years with my first junior nationals being in Minnesota. I am a senior at Kansas State University, studying Animal Science and focusing on production. After I graduate I plan on going to Australia to work for a few months on an Angus ranch. I know this decision will benefit me in my future, by allowing me to get a grasp of how other countries run their operations. I can say that I am excited, however very nervous. I am one that depends on friends a lot and I have made so many through school and going to cattle shows that I am going to miss being able to talk to them 24-7. “You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Adkins has become my theme song. For most of you, I am sure you have heard it; if you haven’t, then listen to the lyrics. My years of showing
nationals every year. Every summer you get to pick up right where you left off last year. They might even be the friends that you have for the rest of your life even if you are miles apart. So, for the younger kids I encourage you to make the best of junior nationals and try to meet as many juniors as possible and of course make memories, those are what will stick with you forever. Then by the time your 21, you can reflect on everything you accomplished, all the people you met, all the memories you made, and maybe even remember where every junior nationals was that you attended. Seniors, I hope you can admit that this song is true. That you have met many of your friends at cattle shows and your best memories are from shows. You might not realize it now, but once it is over I feel like you will. Make the best of your last few years and always go back to when you were a kid and

Aijca Membership Membership in the nationwide AmericanInternational Junior Charolais Association (AIJCA) is open to anyone 21 years of age and under as of January 1 of the present year. The initial membership fee is $30 and $25 annual dues thereafter.
A Grand “Chute-Out” gathered AIJCA families from 24 states to the Nebraska State Fairgrounds, Grand Island, Neb. The opening ceremonies with a performance from the Abu Bekr Shrine’s White Horse Mounted Patrol began the week’s excitement for all participants. Agricultural professionals and Olympic gold medalist, Curt Tomasevicz, led workshops sharing their expertise in the conference portion of the event. Junior members left with new ideas and a better understanding of agriculture. Wednesday morning began the Bull, Steer, Percentage Heifer and Bred & Owned Shows. Jason Hoffman, Thedford, Neb. evaluated the 173 entries from 19 states. Friday held the Owned Heifer Show with 235 entries from 24 states evaluated by Jack Ward, Plattsburg, Mo. Dedicatees and Honorees 2012 Junior National Show Dedicatee Many strive a lifetime to earn love, friendship and respect. However, these were just three on a much longer list accomplished by Jordan Mack before he left us in a tragic farm accident on April 17, 2011. Jordan Francis Mack was born on June 17, 1988, to Emil and Renee (Hanson) Mack in Watertown, South Dakota. Following in footsteps of Renee and her family, he took an interest in the Charolais business at the age of eight. This newfound passion led him to many summers spent at the Thomas Ranch near Harrold, South Dakota, learning the ins and outs of the cattle business. He credited Troy Thomas with teaching him the ropes of the industry, and Thomas pedigrees became the cornerstone of Jordan’s new herd. Before long, Jordan was exhibiting cattle across the United States, a pursuit in which he took great joy. Jordan held a deep pride in his cattle and worked hard to better his herd, as well as the Charolais breed. A long list of wins and achievements followed, including the 2007 Grand Champion Charolais Female at the North American International Livestock Exposition Junior Show, 2008 Reserve Grand Champion Female at the Junior National Western Stock Show , 2009 South Dakota State Fair Supreme Champion FFA Female, winning the 2009 South Dakota U-Fit-It contest, and 2010 Supreme Champion Bull at the South Dakota State Fair. Jordan often left the Junior National claiming several honors. His South Dakota team won Champion Team Fitting in 2005, 2007 and 2010. In 2005, Jordan was
chosen as Reserve Champion Intermediate Showman behind his close friend, Cally Thomas. He exhibited class winning heifers in 2008 and 2010, as well. As Jordan reached his final year of eligibility at the 2010 Junior National in South Dakota, he received the honorable title of Junior Herdsman of the Year. While he successfully presented numerous champions, Jordan is remembered for much more than buckles and ribbons. Jordan’s personality was loved and cherished by all. Though quiet and compassionate, Jordan’s sense of humor and fun-loving side was contagious, with a smile you couldn’t help but want to duplicate. He was fueled by enthusiasm, and that, along with his ambition, did not escape notice. As one fellow cattleman so appropriately said, “You left this earth leaving no stone unturned - you lived life to its fullest you had a passion for cattle and lived it every day you left nothing on the table and you made us all so proud. A good friend has been lost and we will miss him dearly.” Jordan leaves a beautiful legacy in the Charolais breed, one that will not be forgotten by the Charolais family. Jordan’s younger siblings, Stephanie, Caitlin and Landon continue to develop the herd that Jordan was so proud of. In memory of all his great accomplishments as a young herdsman, the AIJCA Herdsman of the Year Award has been renamed the Jordan Mack Memorial Herdsman of the Year Award.

2012 Junior National Conference Honoree Chad Clark was a born leader. Whether he was leading his Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, the Colonial Junior Charolais Association, or the AIJCA Junior Board, he made an impact on everyone around him. Chad served as an AIJCA Junior Board of Director from 2008 until December of 2010 when his life was tragically cut short by a car accident. Chad was a role model for our youth membership and an asset to the Junior Board. Chad began to build his Charolais herd at the age of three continuing the tradition his grandfather began in 1963. He grew up actively showing cattle and hogs locally in 4-H as well as exhibiting at the Maryland State Fair and the Keystone International ROE Show. In 2007, he exhibited the Grand Champion Female at the Maryland State Fair Open Charolais Show and the Reserve Champion Female at the Keystone International Junior Show in 2010. The Clark Family attended their first Junior National Show and Leadership Conference in 2004 in Timonium, Maryland. After his first experience, Chad knew he wanted to attend every year. He led the Colonial Juniors in fundraising activities to provide transportation for the juniors’ cattle from the east coast to the Junior Nationals. Chad’s father, David credits Chad’s marketing skills to Greg Hubert as Chad grew up watching him on the sale block. At the 2008 Junior National, Chad was elected Area 26

14 Director. He was very eager to begin this leadership role and to learn about the behind the scenes activities of the Junior National Show and Leadership Conference. Chad’s calm and dedicated personality taught others how to lead by their actions and not only their words. His good humor was always kind and well-timed and his smile contagious. Chad’s leadership skills were demonstrated far beyond the Charolais industry. As a senior in high school, Chad was the President of the Student Government and an active volunteer with his local Choptank Ruritan Club. During his short time at the University of Maryland, he had joined the Block & Bridle Club, become an Agricultural Council representative, competed on the UMD Livestock Judging Team and been elected as president of his AGR fraternity in only his sophomore year. Because of his Junior National experiences managing the show and contests, his professors and fellow classmates referred to him as a “professional”, so he was assigned the duties of coordinating their livestock showmanship show as a freshman. In his memory, the Block & Bridle Club award a Chad Dulin Clark Memorial Herdsmanship Award to a senior exemplifying Chad’s finest qualities: leadership; willingness to help; positive and inspiring attitude and going above and beyond what’s asked. unnoticed among our junior Charolais membership. The Outstanding Senior Member award is given to an AIJCA member 16 or older representing qualities of leadership, dedication and a yearning to make a difference in the agricultural and beef industries. Chad fully exemplified all of those qualities. The AIJCA has dedicated this award in his honor, naming it the Chad Clark Memorial Outstanding Senior Member Award.
