always look forward to the August issue of the ACJ as a time to reflect and focus on the achievements of our junior members at our National Junior Heifer Show. This year at Lima, Ohio, was no exception, and you can’t help but feel the sense of pride that we all have as parents, family members, breeders and ACA staff as we watch our junior board of directors navigate their way through an event-packed, fun-filled week of contests and cattle shows. I would personally like to thank the AJCA Board of Directors for the professional manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the week, as well as during the awards banquet. Segayle Foster and crew put in many extra hours and effort to insure the success of this year’s event. Congratulations and good luck to Kelsey Rutt from Nebraska on being elected AJCA President for 2012-2013. The Ohio Chianina group did an outstanding job of planning, fund raising and executing this great event. I would like to also congratulate Mr. Taylor Graham from Tennessee on winning the All-Around Exhibitor award for the second year in a row. It takes a tremendous amount of work, commitment, discipline and shear talent to accomplish this feat once, not to mention twice. It gives me a really good feeling as I drive home each year from the NJHS knowing that the future of our association as well as agriculture in general is in good hands with our great young leaders of

The ACA Foundation Benefit Auction was a huge success. Thank you to all the donors and purchasers of the unique variety of consignments and helping the foundation raise $50,000 at the kick-off fundraiser event. The proceeds from this event will go towards funding the 2013 NJHS in Grand Island, Nebraska, as well as establishing initial funds within the foundation for education, youth, and research. You all were part of a special night and event in the history of the ACA. We’re looking forward to a great fall and hope to see you all in Louisville, Kentucky for our National Show and Sale.

Time Flies When You're Having Fun!
I
cannot believe I have been with the association for over a year now. I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun. If this first year is any indication of the years to come then I am truly excited about the direction of this great breed. The people I have met and the places I have traveled to have been a joy all in their own and I cannot wait for this state fair and sale season to begin. In just a few short days I will travel to the Ohio State Fair but the fun won’t stop there. Indiana, Iowa, South Dakota and Tennessee state fairs are all on the list. After the state fair run we move right into sale season and I am excited to see what the Chianina and ChiAngus breeders have for this year. This year’s Junior Nationals was extra special to me because it was held in Lima, Ohio, the city where I was

“Rain Is A Good Thing” is what most of us have being singing! The grass has been brown since the first/middle part of June and I am sure most of you have experienced the HEAT WAVE that has overstayed its welcome! The past few weeks have been in the middle to upper 90’s and even in the 100’s with no rain here in Indiana. I would like to be someplace “Where The Green Grass Grows”. I hope everyone had a safe trip home from Lima. It was a hot week but everyone had some sort of way to stay cool! The Ohio crew did a tremendous job! Another successful Junior National can be marked down in the books. Juniors, please remember to thank everyone who helped you get to Lima. It is great friends and family who make it all possible. Congratulations to our new queen, Megan Hunt from Ohio. I am sure she will represent our breed well. Congratulations to our scholarship winners Blythe Graham, Jessica Harsh, Allison Higgins and SyAnn Foster. I wish you all the best of luck. I hope all of the Ladies are planning on attending the “Come As You Are” luncheon which will be held on Tuesday, November 13 at 11:30 a.m. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. ow! It’s hard to believe that another junior nationals has come and gone, and that state fairs, pasture sales, and school are about to begin. I want thank the state of Ohio for hosting this year’s junior nationals and definitely making it one to remember! I also want to congratulate not only the winners, but all of the exhibitors who participated this year because the show would not be the same without everyone involved. I also want to congratulate the newly elected board members Taylor Graham, Sydney Gehl, Amelia Higgins, and Laurel Culp... welcome to the family! Planning for next year’s junior nationals is well underway. The state of Nebraska is looking forward to hosting this event and plan to make it one to remember! We are in the process of designing a website for next year’s junior nationals (www.2013juniornational.com). This will be a site for people to come to for information about junior nationals. Procedure for Electing Members to the ACA Board of Directors
Each year the active adult membership of the ACA will elect four directors based on the updated region alignment. The ACA regions are as follows: • Northwest (states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington & Wyoming) • Southwest (states of Arizona, California, Kansas, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas & Utah) • Northeast (states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont & Wisconsin) • Southeast (states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vir-
ginia & West Virginia) The nomination and election procedure is outlined below: 1) A nominating petition, which appears in the August ACJ, must be completed and returned to the Association office by Sept. 15, 2012. (2) Ballots with the names of the nominees will be mailed to the ACA membership on Oct. 1, 2012. (3) The ballots must be returned to the ACA. All ballots must be postmarked BEFORE Nov. 1, 2012. (4) The candidate receiving the most votes from each region, or for the at-large positions, will be declared the winner. (5) Each active ACA member may cast one vote for each at-large director position open each year and one vote for the regional director of his or her particular region when being elected.
Board of Director positions up for election this year, 2012, are the Northeast Region, Southeast Region and two (2) at-large positions. All directors will be elected for a three-year term. No more than four (4) persons from the same region shall serve on the Board of Directors at any one time. National Sale Rules & Agreement Live Animal Eligibility:
1. Bulls & heifers must be registered with the ACA at time of nomination. All animals and matings that are suspect for one or more genetic abnormalities (PHA, TH, AM & NH) must be tested with results on file with the ACA. No animals will sell without this testing. 2. Stall space is limited to animals ENTERED in the ACA National Show by the NAILE. If you wish to have stalling for a display/sale animal, you MUST enter an animal for a stalling space. No extra stalling space is granted for sale only animals. 3. A $200 non-refundable nomination fee for live lots or $150 non-refundable nomination fee for genetic lots, payable to the ACA, must accompany each entry. (All nomination fees will be applied to sale commission & expenses.) Buybacks will be charged the same sale expense as all other lots. Show entries/releases and/or ACA registry work will be held until auction accounts have been settled. Any difference in the eventual sale expense percentage will be refunded to the seller for these animals/items. 4. Each nomination is subject to screening by the ACA National Sale Committee and sale coordinator. 5. It is highly recommended that each nomination include the following: a. High quality photo image of the animal or video. b. Footnote material should include complete performance data: birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight & EPDs. Other footnote
information should include show ring winnings by the individual or its parents/siblings and any pertinent sales figures about the individual’s parents/siblings.
Flush, Embryo & Pregnancy Eligibility:
All animals and matings that are suspect for one or more genetic abnormalities (PHA, TH, AM & NH) must be tested for with results on file with the ACA. No animals will sell without this testing. Guidelines for flushes, embryos and pregnancies are as follows: 1. An ET Flush shall be defined as and consist of a future ET Flush from a specified donor dam and mated to the bull of the buyer’s choice. a. The donor dam must be made available for the ET Flush within six (6) months of the ACA National Sale. b. A successful ET Flush shall be defined as producing a minimum of six (6) transferable embryos. c. The buyer shall be responsible for all flushing expenses. d. Buyer shall be responsible for providing semen & is responsible for semen shipping costs for the ET Flush. e. Buyer shall be responsible for all embryo shipping expenses. f. Buyer shall pay 50% of sale price on sale day with the balance due the seller at the completion of the ET Flush. 3. Package of Frozen Embryos shall be defined as and consist of a minimum of

Buyer will be responsible for retesting the recipient cow to confirm pregnancy at delivery. d. There is no live calf guarantee with the purchase of an ET Pregnancy.

First off, I would like to congratulate all who participated in the NJHS in Lima, Ohio. What a great week it was Dr. Rob Sheets for Chi families, kids, friends,Chi fellowship, and awesome Chi cattle! It brought forth one of the most important elements of being an ACA member; building lifetime relationships and friendships through the love of Chianina cattle. I hope everyone took home a great memory and a new friendship. As a board member my "hat" is off to all the ACA staff, host families, volunteers, and donors of the 2012 NJHS. Thank you! As for the business end of things, the ACA operated in the BLACK for the second year in a row. Trying to keep the association within budget is always a challenge and I would like to commend our staff for stretching the available funds with efficiency and professionalism. On the subject of keeping things in balance, we as members need to keep in mind our individual continued support for our ACA with increased registrations, transfers,donations, and volunteerism. It is truely your association to nurture and grow. As we all know, what you put into anything of meaning will be returned to you many times fold. The opportunity to become an ACA board member through the fall election is approaching. I would encourage any member with a desire to serve the ACA membership to run for the board. It has been a wonderful experience for me to serve the ACA membership and make valued friendships with the fellow board members. NAILE Junior Show Ownership Deadline Sept. 1

at $55, but all payable to the NAILE. Junior show entry fee will be $30 payable to the NAILE. You do not need to submit copies of entries to the ACA office. We will get all entries from the NAILE. ACA Sponsored Sale Policy
The ACA requires sale animals consigned to ACA sponsored sales to be tested for genetic abnormalities of which they are identified as suspect. • A suspect animal has an ancestor that has tested positive as a carrier for one or more known genetic abnormalities and no DNA test has been performed within the direct lineage to that ancestor that is a known carrier to clear the animal in question of this status. Available test results and status of sale animals shall be presented at the time of sale. Any buyer of untested lots does so with the awareness that testing hasn't been conducted with the inherent risk of the lot being a carrier of a genetic abnormality at the time of

2012 National Junior Chi Show
Juniors from across the country met at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio, June 16-22 for the Chianina National Junior Heifer Show. With 176 exhibitors and 207 head of cattle, the week was bound to be a great success from the very beginning. Contests and cattle kept the juniors busy all week with some friendly competition. One of the biggest highlights was the family fun night, which consisted of games, greased pig chasing, and the night concluded with a concert by the Quin Peterson Band. A grand time was had by all! Taylor Graham of Crossville, Tenn., took home the Top All-Around Exhibitor award for the second year in a row. Graham received a confirmed pregnant recip cow carrying a Whos Too Foxy 76N embryo donated by Hunt Farms of New Madison, Ohio. He also received a choice of two embryos out of RSRS Victoria sired by Chiangus bulls Eagle Scout or JSC Momentum and Chimaine bulls Headliner or One and Only, donated by KJS Chianina, Van Wert, Ohio. Judge Kyle Colyer traveled all the way from Bruneau, Idaho, to sort a great group of Chi cattle. The show day started out on Thursday with a stout group of steers. In the prospect division, Ky Teeter, Lockney, Texas, exhibited the Grand Champion Prospect Steer, PGCC Milky Way 123Y, a Sept. 8, 2011 son of Milk Man that weighed 712 lbs. Reserve Grand Champion Prospect Steer, MCCF Finn, a March 20, 2012 son of My Turn, exhibited by Candace Muir of Waynesfield, Ohio. In the progress steer show, Grand Champion honors went to Tyler Heintz of Lakeview, Ohio, with his steer AM Steer 10, a March 27, 2011 son of Unforgiven that weighed 1270. Kullen Cook of Petersburg, Ind., exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Progress steer, LARR Kobe, a March 8, 2011 son of Monopoly. The Chianina Bred & Owned Bull show was limited this year with only three head making the haul to Lima, but still representing the Chi breed well. Grand Champion Bull honors went to WCC WOF Copper Mine 420Y, a April 2, 2011 son of WCC Mr Special 369W, exhibited by Hunter Hamilton, Heltonville, Ind. Kendra VanOrder of Hamilton, Mich., exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Bull, KVO Sinatra, a May 5, 2011 son of CKG Muhammed 705. Thursday wrapped up with the Chiangus Female show, which was stacked with high quality Chiangus females from end to end. The Grand Champion Chiangus Female was BMS Xcellance, shown by SyAnn Foster of Lockeny, Texas. This November 4, 2010 heifer, sired by FBF Turning Point 514T, was raised by Stoppel Cattle Company of Russel, Kansas. The Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus female was TR/TKM Y Not PCA, a March 2, 2011 daughter of TR Trail Blazer, exhibited by Hannah Winegardner of Lima, Ohio and raised by Talmo Ranch, Talmo, Georgia. In the Bred & Owned Chiangus Female show, top honors went to Taylor Graham, Crossville, Tenn., with his GCT Kendall heifer, a February 3, 2011 daughter of Gambles Casino. Reserve Champion Bred & Owned female went to HIGG Xcstasy 03X, a December 6, 2010 daughter of HIGG Remedy, exhibited by Allison Higgins of Watertown, Tenn. The Chianina female show on Friday helped the week end with a bang! Grand Champion Chianina Female honors went to Bailey Buck of Madill, Okla. with her heifer NCD Champion Yeonna 1042, an Oct. 21, 2011 daughter of Monopoly, raised by Davis Cattle Company of Wheeler, Texas. 2012 AJCA Herdsman of the Year – Sydney Gehl It was a big surprise to Sydney Gehl when she heard her name announced as the recipient of the 2012 AJCA Herdsman of the Year award. She considers this award to be one of the more prestigious awards that she could have earned and realizes that her peers must have noticed how much she enjoys attending and being a part of every aspect of the Junior Chianina Association. She has always enjoyed attending Junior Nationals and competing in all of the contests. She feels the most at home in the cattle barn or at a cattle function. Sydney sometimes explains her enthusiasm and hours of work put into showing cattle, as training for her family’s sport. Sydney takes pride in being knowledgeable in all aspects of cattle production and how the Chianina breed fits into today’s commercial cattle production as well as the show ring. Sydney will be serving her first year as an at large director of the AJCA board this next year and looks forward to hosting Junior Nationals in Grand Island, Nebraska in June 2013.

ears of hard work and dedication paid off this year for Taylor Graham when he was named the 2012 AllAround Champion. "Every year since I started attending junior nationals this has been my biggest goal," says Taylor. "I've just always had the mind set that if you are going to be a part of something you should strive to be the best at it." Taylor has been very active in competing in contests since he started attending junior nationals in 2004 and has been in the top ten 5 out of the last 6 years. When Taylor heard his named called as the All-Around Champion, he felt "that all the times I had tried and tried to reach that goal was finally worth it. Every time I had entered a contest and tried to learn from my mistakes had finally paid off." Taylor was re-elected to the AJCA Board of Directors this year and is serving a two year term as an at-large director.

He received his Associates Degree from Butler Community College in Kansas earlier this spring and is set to begin his third year of college at Oklahoma State University this fall. Smoke in the Air
S
moke in the air. Every summer we watch hundreds of thousands of acres of forest burn. As I listen to folks anguish and wring their hands, I have to remind myself it is all part of nature’s cycle in the west. Granted we try and blame the Forest Service, the BLM, the pine-bark beetle, untended campfires, tossed cigarettes or arson. Smokey the Bear admonished us as kids, “Only you can prevent forest fires.” But is that really true? On a centennial scale, certainly on a millennial scale it seems fire is inevitable. You can only put if off for so long. The stages of a forest’s growth go from seedling to pole (or sapling), to young, to mature and to old. Our western pine forests can reach 140 years. But eventually they will succumb to fire, storm, disease, insects, or timber, but they do succumb. Lightening strikes a match in a mature forest and cleans house. Then the cycle starts over. Enter Man: Homo saipen. It’s only been in the last 200 years of our continent’s existence that forest fires have become an inconvenience to humans. We became civilized and presumed we could encroach on the forest’s natural cycle. We have found that unless they are completely destroyed there will always be a threat. So that’s what we do, we pave it. There are many examples of natural cycles and extreme changes that give man pause to question his own influence. Build a city below sea level, dam a
river, put a freeway over an earthquake fault, or live in the desert. Stay there long enough, and Earth will try and take it back. We have given much attention to global climate change. Duh, in the grand scale our Earth has frozen over and heated up on a regular basis. We worry man is polluting the atmosphere. It’s a bit pretentious to think that man, over the millennia can have much effect. If man disappeared like the dinosaurs, in a short 1000 years the Earth would begin to putrefy, erode, digest, and bury our human footprints. Oh, the Sierra Club’s National headquarters in San Francisco might last longer than a cow path in a wildlife refuge, but sooner or later it will become dust. And the floods and fires and earthquakes and volcanoes and ice ages will carry on. This is no consolation to those who have been victims of nature’s power. We can only sympathize, but man is stubborn. No doubt we will continue to try and tame acts of nature with our own unnatural acts. So, with a tip of the hat to the many thousands of firefighters risking their lives to protect man-made possessions, fire is simply Earth renewing itself, as it has since Genesis. The mountain outside my living room window is on fire as I write this. It’s part of a National Forest. We moved the cows out of danger. Let’er burn.

Stretch pastures in drought conditions by Denise Schwab and Sherry Hoyer, Iowa State University
As the drought continues, cattle producers are asking how to stretch their pastures. Two major techniques may be pursued, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Denise Schwab. One is to reduce the grazing pressure from the animal side, and the other is to supplement the amount of feed available. “Animal grazing pressure can be reduced in two ways, reducing cow numbers through selective culling and weaning calves early,” Schwab said. “Consider culling any cows with structural, health, reproductive or attitude problems. Early pregnancy checking with ultrasound may be another tool to help tighten the calving period and cull very late cycling, open cows.” Research has shown calves can be successfully weaned as young as 90 days or less, but consistently weaned at 100-120 days of age. Some of that success depends on giving one round of vaccinations to the calves prior to weaning, and creep feeding for 10-14 days prior to weaning. Weaning reduces the nutrient requirements of the cow 30-50 percent, allowing for energy intake to go toward cow maintenance rather than milk production. Creep feeding is another tool to reduce the feed requirements on the cow, but feed efficiency of creep feeding is extremely variable. Calves tend to be more efficient after weaning when fed directly. “The second technique is to supplement the cow while on the pasture,” she said. “There are several considerations for this, including labor and equipment to feed, controlling feed waste, and the cost of the supplemental feed.” Feed cost really needs to be the major consideration, followed by the issue of how to deliver and control wastes. Many producers will want to feed hay as the supplement, which seems like the logical solution, Schwab said. However, if feeding hay on pasture, producers need to be extremely conscientious about control waste and limiting intake. If allowed full-time

access to hay, cows can easily consume far more than is needed. Remember, you want to supplement pasture, not completely replace grazing. Also, as hay price approaches $150-200 per ton, this probably isn’t the most cost effective option, she said. “For example, a mature 1,350-pound cow fed completely in dry lot could consume about 38 pounds of hay per day, which would cost $2.78 per cow per day if hay is priced at $150/ton,” she said. “Studies have shown that cows need about 0.5-1.0 percent of the cow’s bodyweight in supplemental feed per day, or 7-13 pounds of hay to substitute for available forage, which would cost $0.50-$1 per cow per day. Another option is to supplement 3-5 pounds of grain or coproduct and 5 pounds of hay per day which would cost between $0.65-0.75 per cow per day in addition to the available forage.” Another possibility is to supplement only the grain/ co-product while on pasture at about 5 to 6 pounds per head per day. Depending on the current pasture situation, this may or may not have enough total feed available to meet all the cows’ needs. Doubling the quantity and offering it only every other day is also a supplementation strategy that has been proven to work. “How do you know which feeds are the most cost effective? You really need to determine the price per pound of energy or protein in the feed to compare multiple feeds,” Schwab said. “A quick way to do that is to use the Iowa Beef Center’s spreadsheet ‘Feed Energy Index,’ which is available as a free download from the IBC website. By simply typing in the various feeds available and their costs, you can get a quick comparison of which feeds provide the lowest cost energy.” There are multiple strategies that can help stretch pasture in drought situations such as this year. However, they should be individualized to meet the specific needs of each producer and pasture. For more help on stretching pasture, contact an ISU Extension beef program specialist.

by Kelsey Culp Throughout life, at some point, almost everyone will think to themself: “Where will I end up some day?” Is there really an answer to such a simple question? You may say ‘yes;’ “I know just where I will end up in life.” On the other hand, you may answer ‘no’ “How will I ever know?” I too, wonder the very same thing occasionally, and have ever since I was a little girl, wearing my first pair of little red boots. “Where will my life take me?” “Who will I meet along the way?” As well as that commonly heard question: “What do I want to be when I grow up?” My second grade teacher, Mrs. Levy, has been one of the most inspirational people in my life. She had such dedication and passion every day in the classroom. I often thought to myself, “Will I ever be so passionate about something in life?” Even though I’ve decided teaching isn’t the path in life I want to take, I knew that I, too, could be dedicated to something special,
just as she was about teaching. Mrs. Levy made me choose and focus on something that I was born into, something that would shape me into a successful person, both personally and professionally; something as simple as staying true to my roots, and being involved with livestock. The first steps on my journey through life have been especially interesting. I know many people who still reside in the same house, in the same town in which they have lived ever since they were born. For me, however, that can’t be said. I grew up in northeast Indiana with my parents and, at that time, just my older sister. As I grew older, my family moved three times. I now reside in Kentucky; the third and perhaps the final state that I will call home. One constant with these places however, even with all the changes, is that I’ve always worn my boots. I guess you could say that my journey began here, by taking these first steps,
wearing my little red boots. I had turned nine the first summer we lived in Kentucky and could not wait to join 4-H and start showing cattle. I raised a steer and was the happiest little nine year old alive. I finally was going to be able to be like my big sister! I was going to get to start doing something I had been waiting forever to do; show a calf! The time came for county check in. I had everything together and was more than ready to officially be old enough to show. Little did I know, or even my parents for that matter, that there was a problem. We had just moved from Ohio to Kentucky. 4-H eligibility began in the third grade in Ohio. In Kentucky, however, the rules stated that you must be nine by January 1st in order to be eligible to show and compete in livestock shows. to represent our breed and serve as its ambassador in ways I never thought possible. Judging livestock is a way of life around my house. My dad was a member of the Purdue Judging Team that won the National Contest in 1978. Later, he went on to coach at Purdue while studying to earn his Master’s degree. I decided that since he had been successful and had gained so many important life skills, I, too, would judge and see where that experience would take me. I competed in the state 4-H livestock judging contest, and surprised myself by being High
hit me. My aunt, who had battled cancer the majority of her life, for 41 years, passed away. I was so caught up in things that I hadn’t taken the time to realize how sick she was. Suzy Culp both defined and embodied a very strong, courageous person; someone who never gave up. She was the kind of person that people looked up to for being so determined to try to beat something that for years, had consumed her life. She never complained, and she never once asked, “Why did this happen to me?” She was, and will continue to be, my role model and the person I think of whenever I need a sense of inspiration. Upon graduating from high school, I decided that I would accept a scholarship to a junior college to continue judging livestock. Scott, I traveled to many different judging contests, visited and met numerous breeders, their operations, and enjoyed so much hospitality. I grew so much that year. Not being able to see my parents and sisters regularly was tough. I think I talked to my Dad every day, through some sort of communication device. I challenge each young person to move away from home, go to college at least a few hours away, learn to become independent, and most of all, realize how lucky and fortunate you are. The little things in life are what seem to matter most; not the materialistic items, but the love and support your family gives you each and every day. I chose not to stay in Kansas to complete my college experience. I had talked to my family a lot about this decision. I remember visiting Jerome and Joan Settles in late 2010, and also talked to them about whether to stay or go home. I will never forget them telling me that regardless of what people may say or think, it’s all about what was best for me. Ultimately, it should be my decision, and if I wasn’t feeling it, I was the only person who knew what was best for me. I applied to Morehead State University, and

Chianina Juniors Recognized as BEST Winners The 2011-2012 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) Program wrapped up on June 2 with its annual awards banquet held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. “The banquet is a time to celebrate with family, friends and BEST supporters the many achievements of our BEST participants,” says Stephanie Sindel, BEST coordinator. “Each participant is recognized for their hard work that goes above and beyond the show ring.” Several representatives from program sponsors Bob Evans Farms, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, Green Oak Farms, M.H. Eby, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and Burroughs Frazier Farms were on hand to help present awards totaling more than $32,000 in belt buckles, furniture, jackets, show materials and other awards. This year’s BEST program featured 16 sanctioned shows that weaved its way across the state. More than 415 head of market animals and heifers were shown and 315 youth participated. The Champion Chianina Heifer was exhibited by Megan Hunt, New Madison, Ohio. Her heifer, JPCC Nelly, is an April 2011 daughter of Monopoly and
was bred Noah Skrinjar of East Liverpook, Ohio. Megan is the daughter of Tom and Deanna Hunt. Reserve Champion Chianina Heifer is REFN Blaze, exhibited by Austin Garner of Hamilton, Ohio. A March 2011 daughter of DKAA My Turn 01R, his heifer was bred by Fennig Show Cattle, Coldwater, Ohio. Austin is the son of Jim and LuAnn Garner. The Champion Chianina Steer was exhibited Lindsey Pugh, Louisville, Ohio. BHN Soapweed is the son of Smilin Bob and was bred by Becky Heath of Cody, Neb. Johnson had a conversation with Barb Ohlrichs about approaching Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Colorado to co-host the junior national. $11,500 facility costs (includes rooms for contests and meetings) (security, janitorial & clean-up is additional) $35 - $36 / head for bedding in the barn and at tie-outs 135 RV hookups 1800 hotel rooms in Grand Island Hiebert, Comer, Esch and Johnson will confer in the next few weeks with contacts from each state to determine if state contacts could be identified in order to coordinate and host the 2013 Junior National in Grand Island. A conference call will be scheduled for final approval after these contacts have been made. Art Pittman offered to host the 2014 Jr. National in Raleigh, NC and he will sing karaoke during the opening ceremonies. New Business: ACA Staff Positions: Comer reported that Holly Hiebert was promoted to the Director of Shows, Events & Youth Activities. Prior to Heather’s departure, Holly cross-trained with Heather Counts extensively. Additionally, Heather has remained available to consult with Holly and to answer questions since her resignation. The meeting adjourned for lunch at 11:49 a.m.

The meeting resumed at 1: 11 p.m. Committee Reports (continued): Performance & Genetic Abnormality: Dr. Bob Weaber, beef cattle geneticist from Kansas State University, joined the meeting to discuss performance adjustments. Dr. Weaber inquired as to the status of genetic defects in the ACA gene pool. From Dr. Weaber’s vantage point, there have been no new defects identified since our fall board meeting. Dr. Weaber suggests that EPD’s be recalculated and updated monthly. Calving Ease: In the spring 2012 calculation, ASA released a multi-calving ease model. For a multi-breed contemporary group for Chianina genetics, we are months away from having a CE and MCE epd. Some discussion evolved around developing an index, specific to Chianina genetics, which include and highlight the unique attributes of Chianina cattle. The meeting recessed at 2:48 p.m. The meeting reconvened at 3:00 p.m. Old Business: Jennifer Roach joined the meeting and addressed the topic of changing the name designation on registration certificates. Chiangus and Red Chiangus would be printed on the green certificates and would be listed as “Chiangus.” Italian Fullbloods would have their own blue certificates and would be listed as “Italian Fullbloods.” All other composites would have the designation “Chianina” with CH (Chianina), CM (Chimaine) or CF (Chiford) in the breed designation. Culp suggested that on a new print run of registration certificates, the designation “ACA” is replaced with either “Chianina” or “American Chianina Association” at
the top of the pedigree in order to give the breed more name recognition. The board directed Jennifer that the ACA staff should make a decision and proceed. Committee Reports (continued): Show & Sale: Denver Sale: Miller reported that there were a variety of issues reported concerning the sale in Denver. Miller suggested that if the brand-inspection and bonding issues can be addressed, the ACA should consider managing this sale. Miller would like to get the commission down to 15%. Comer recognized Sears for doing extensive legwork at Louisville with breeders to recruit consignments for the Denver sale. Esch moved that the ACA manage the sale in Denver, contingent upon resolving the brand inspection and bonding issues, seconded by Shields. Motion carried unanimously. National Sale: Humphrey reported that the sale grossed $88,925 on 21 catalogued lots, with a 14.1% commission, and $4426.20 netted to the ACA. NAILE charges 3%, plus $2,667 for food and beverage. The small ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn is available for rental for $2,000. Discussion ensued regarding moving the National Sale to a hotel adjacent to the fairgrounds. The consensus of the board was to keep the sale in the West Wing for 2012 but to dress up and brighten the facility however possible. ACA Managed Sales: Miller reported that the first on-line sale (held February 21 and 22) was a success; every lot sold except one. An on-line bred female sale is being considered. Ohio Beef Expo Chi Sale: The gross was $109,100, which was nearly double from the year before, with the same number of lots. Commission was 10.1% which netted the ACA $5500. Every lot sold. Selection of Judges:
The ACA board of directors met on Friday, April 13, 2013, at the ACA Headquarters, Platte City, MO. The meeting was called to order by President Sheets at 8:37 a.m. CDT. ACA board members present included Clarahan, Culp, Esch, Higgins, Johnson, Miller, Pittman, Schaefer, Sheets, Shields and Stoppel. Absent board members included Holt. Each board member gave an update on weather, field, pasture and cattle conditions in his location. The meeting briefly recessed in order for the board to pose for a commemorative photograph. Officer Reports: The secretary’s reports for the fall board meeting in October 28 & 29 and November 15, 2011 were presented by Culp. Stoppel moved to accept the October minutes as printed, seconded by Miller. Motion carried unanimously. Shields moved to accept the November minutes as printed, seconded by Pittman. Motion carried unanimously. The treasurer’s report was presented by Esch. Miller moved to accept the treasurer’s report, seconded by Schaefer. Motion carried unanimously. Committee Reports: Budget: Esch presented the ACA proposed budget for the fiscal year 2011-2012. Building & Grounds: Esch inquired about the roof. Comer responded that a hail storm last spring had damaged the roof causing leakage. The roofing company has since repaired the roof. Comer reported that the heating and
cooling systems are aging and will need replacing at some point. The headers above some of the windows are loose. Otherwise, the drainage system installed around the building is doing well and the moisture continues to be diverted away from the building. All of the large cracks in the basement have been filled. We still need to rent the new office suite. The parking lot will need to be resurfaced at some point. Long Range Planning: Sheets reported for Geuns. Geuns would like to continue to serve on the LRP Committee, but would like to be replaced as chairman. (He has served in this role for three years.) Miller nominated Steve Melroe as chairman, seconded by Stoppel. Motion carried. Promotion, Benefits & Marketing: Culp shared the first draft of a proposal entitled “American Chianina Association Cooperative Advertising Guidelines.” There is currently $13,055 in the account raised at the Star Spangled Extravaganza in 2008. Culp was directed to proceed with the drafted proposal and solicit input from the committee. Comer shared the Certificate of Incorporation for The American Chianina Association Foundation. The first Board of Directors meeting for the Foundation will be held at the 2012 National Junior Heifer Show in Lima, OH. The kick-off fundraiser for the Foundation will be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday evening at the 2012 Jr. National Heifer Show. The first $12,000 raised will be used to support the 2013 Jr. National Heifer Show, with the balance being deposited in the Foundation. Clarahan inquired as to how much benefit the ACA received from staffing a booth at the NBCA. Comer responded that we didn’t engage a lot of one-on-

one conversations because we didn’t have a neat little give-away. The cost of the booth and staff travel was roughly $2500. The 2013 NBCA will be held in Florida. The meeting recessed at 10:26 a.m. The meeting reconvened at 10:42 a.m.
ABSR, LLC: Todd Karlin, CPA, joined the meeting to discuss utilizing the LLC as an escrow account for state, regional and national sales that the ACA manages. A separate set of Quick Books would be set up for the LLC. There would be separate bookkeeping, a separate checking account, but the tax returns would remain the same. The expenses are minimal, funds would no longer be comingled, the accounts would be easier to manage, and the entire process would be cleaner and more transparent. Todd also said that Jennifer Roach was doing a great job managing the accounting and bookkeeping systems and should be commended for her efforts. Esch moved to rename the LLC “Advanced Beef Cattle Services, LLC” seconded by Higgins. Motion carried. Junior & Youth Programs: Holly Hiebert joined the meeting at 10:57 a.m. A powerpoint presentation will be shown during the banquet (which will be held on Thursday evening). Both boards will have a rehearsal on Wednesday evening, in order to make the joint banquet proceed more smoothly. Holly will be attending Ohio’s planning committee meeting next week in Lima. The photography contest will be included in the allaround contest, as well as showmanship. Salesmanship, speech and judging contests will all be conducted

returned to Kentucky to complete my college career. I don’t regret my decision at all. MSU is a better fit for me, and I know that being happy and enjoying life is the most important thing.
My Boots (Continued)
embark on a new journey. I’ll always keep my boots with me; they’ve been the constant item that has been with me every step of the way. I can now look back and see how far I’ve come. The
every pair can be worn to the same place. But I’ve learned something by wearing each one. I’ve worn many different pairs of boots on my journey, and these boots have contributed to long-lasting life experiences and memories made at home, on the farm, in 4-H, FFA, the American Junior Chianina Association, junior college, college; it’s been a great journey so far. “What do I want to be when I grow up?” I’m not exactly sure; although I plan to use my Ag Marketing degree to work for a breed association, state cattlemen’s association, or in a related field or industry. One thing’s for sure; wherever I go and whatever I do, you can bet that I’ll be wearing a pair of boots! Now where did I put that boot polish?

Summer internships are helping me decide what I want to do after graduation. Hopefully, I will find a job that allows me to be as passionate about my career as Mrs. Levy was about teaching. I want to find a job that gives me the chance to be as dedicated to something as my Aunt Suzy was about life. Even though I’m unsure what job that will be, staying true to my roots and staying involved in everything that has been a part of getting me here today is truly important. In life, there are journeys that end, and I have some of those closing in. My junior show career in FFA will end this fall at the North American, and my eligibility as a junior member with the American Chianina Association will end in 2013. College will be over in the spring of 2013, and then I will

person I’m becoming and the steps I’ve taken in my boots to get me to where I am today. There have been rough spots, but I have had an amazing support system along the way. I will continue to wonder where I will end up in life, and now, what will I do when I graduate. That answer is still unclear, but I am more confident now because I’ve been blessed with amazing people, strong inspirations and role models and great experiences. Many people have walked with my on my journey. It would be difficult (and unfair) to try to list everyone. But lots of different people have helped me try on different pairs of boots that I’ve worn at different times and places. Some are worn to school, work, shows, sales, church and dances. Not every pair of boots fits the same; not
