Editorial Comments... Byron Bayers I want to thank all of you readers who so graciously sent me letters, cards, emails and called about my last Byron Bayers editorial. I had far more responses to this editorial than I have ever had since we started Hereford America 20 years ago. One of the special calls that I received was from an old friend of mine in California who informed me that the agricultural people in California were still basically conservative and they probably all agreed with my editorial, but the big city liberals out voted the agricultural sector in the election. The caller was my old friend and cattle breeder Gino Pedretti of El Nido, CA. I had heard many good things about Gino 50 years ago, but we got acquainted in somewhat of an unusual way. I had just recently finished a tour in the presidency of the American Hereford Association, and my wife, Pauline, and I had headed out to Reno, NV where the AHA was finishing up the National Reference Evaluation for their certification into the Certified Hereford Beef program. We flew into Reno, rented a car and drove about 60 miles south to Smith, NV, where this group of Hereford steers were finishing their feeding program at a large feedlot. There were probably about 120 head of Hereford steers in this program, 21 of which were ours and Largent’s. This program was being run for the AHA by Dr. Craig Ludwig, (continued on page 4)

(continued from page 1) who went on to spent 39 years with the Hereford Association. After Craig retired from the AHA work, he went to work as the Executive Vice President of the Black Hereford Association and did a wonderful job putting that group together. After all of my years of working with Craig, I look back and think that it was a shame he didn’t get a chance to run the AHA. Sadly, Craig died just a few months ago. As Pauline and I arrived at the feedlot, we soon ran into Craig visiting with Gino Pedretti. We were very happy to meet Gino and we enjoyed several hours of visiting that afternoon. Gino had just recently become a director of the AHA and so we had several things to talk about in regards to the steers in the feedlot and his new job as a director. The plan was to weigh the steers when they were finished at the feedlot and ship them across the mountain to California that night where they would be slaughtered the next day, and the carcasses evaluated and graded, before the meat was sent out to the various vendors in that area. Gino asked if Pauline

and I planned to come back to Reno to fly home, I told him our plan was to probably fly out of Northern California, after the carcass evaluation. Gino said to me, “Byron I am alone in my car and I would be happy to have you and Pauline go with me to the slaughter and carcass evaluation tomorrow.” We gladly accepted the invitation. As many of you know that have ever been over Donner Pass it can be very intimidating in the winter and we were now in the early stages of winter in Nevada and California. As we drove back to Reno and then headed west to Donner Pass, we found the pass was on an alert stage for snow and ice, as we raced up the pass with Gino I thought that maybe I got the name mixed up and he was not Pedretti but was Andretti, the race car driver. Gino was an excellent driver and he knew the pass well and we traversed the pass in a timely and safe manner. Both Pauline and I had a lot of respect for Gino as a driver and while we were traveling along we had a wonderful visit about many things. The process at the slaughter and evaluation plant in California was extremely educational and anybody who (continued on page 6)

is in the industry today, which is over 40 years later, could still learn many things about the packing plant process and the evaluation of an actual Hereford carcass. Our group, which was all either Hereford breeders who owned the cattle or representatives of the AHA, were allowed in certain places on the “floor” where we could see our cattle come though the line. The carcasses where moving rapidly so we did not get a chance to carefully study them, but we got some idea as things moved along. The process to me was

unbelievable, because within 2 hours of the start of the process, the animals were slaughtered, evaluated, the carcasses where cut up and ready to be sent to the various places in the area that had orders, and the trucks were in the parking lot to be loaded. Of course, we did not get the carcass data on our individual steers until later when it was released to us by the AHA. It was one of the most educational things that has happened to me in the cattle business in that I was able to evaluate, to some extent, our own cattle being slaughtered for the top program that the AHA had at the time. The only other program, in my experience, that was like it was one that the AHA put

on with Oklahoma State University. The AHA and OSU brought in some top steers that we evaluated and then placed, at Oklahoma State facility. The steers were killed then quick frozen that night and the next day the steer carcasses were one cut cross wise and shown to us for comparison of how we judges placed the live steers verses the carcass evaluation. I’ve had 2 great experiences with carcass evaluation and Gino and I discussed the merits of both processes. I felt as though a fine relationship had been enjoyed during the two days that we spent with Gino, and he got us to the airport where we could make our way home. We were pleased to get

word later that the cattle by our herd bull had made the grade and was now a Certified Sire. Gino was a very good friend of Jack Cooper and would often stay with Jack at sale time and spend a few days with him. It was always pleasant for me to renew my friendship with Gino at the Cooper Sale. Jack, Gino and I would always have a few minutes of very pleasant conversation about the Hereford cattle business. Gino is a fine man with a great reputation with his cattle, and his family has carried on this tradition for a great number of years and now the continuity of having a son, son-in-law and grandsons involved in the ranching operation. Gino, I really enjoyed the call and it brought back great memories! Sadly, to say, in my estimation one of the most destructive things the AHA did in my lifetime was to drop the carcass program shortly after we were in Nevada and California making the evaluations. I have felt that dropping this program opened the door for the Angus breed to walk in with their carcass program and to make the strides that they continue to make now. Yes, we have started a new program and I believe that it has been very successful but it is hard to catch up and I have always had some serious doubts in my mind, if ultrasound is as accurate as actual carcass evaluation was but I realize cost was a factor. I also realize that technology at county fairs is not always the greatest, but I have seen ultrasound put up against actual evaluations and the results, at times, can be quite different. Technology has taken over and many things have changed in the cattle business, but at times you go back and wonder if we haven’t left something in the past. I have had some serious discussions with the former CEO of the AHA that some integration of our old carcass data could have been incorporated in the new system, and given us more reliable results in our data, but I was unable to get my points across to that executive. As former commentator Paul Harvey used to say, “Now you’ve heard the rest of the story.” — BB

Paul Smokov

Paul Smokov, 92, Steele, died Jan. 21, 2017, from complications of heart failure. He was surrounded by his family at home with hospice care. Paul was born on Oct. 18, 1924, near Broadus, MT. He completed the eighth grade in Steele, ND and continued learning in the “School of Hard Knocks.” Paul was married to Betty Lorraine Benson on Sept. 20, 1953. They raised four daughters and one son on their ranch northwest of Steele. Paul was a naturalist who loved God in the

outdoors. He dedicated his life and livelihood to raising commercial Here ford cattle and could often be heard to Paul Smokov say, “You take care of the cows, they’ll take care of you.” He enjoyed a ranching career that spanned seven decades, beginning in the era of horse-drawn farm implements and extending to the age of satellite-guided tractors. Throughout his life, he was frequently recognized and honored for his professional accomplishments. In 2013, he was named Rancher of the Year by the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association. Paul is survived by his wife, Betty, and their five children and spouses, Bonnie (Phil) Peterson and Connie (Eric) Nikiforoff, North Dakota, Nancy (Don) O’Neill, California, Kathy (Marvin) Dykes, Washington, and Terry (Donna) Smokov, South Dakota; 10 grandchildren, Amber Joy, Aaron Peterson, Adam Peterson, Alex Nikifo-

roff, Garrett Nikiforoff, Jason O’Neill, Kristin Harrington, Justin Smokov, Jamie Schomp, and Jodie Severson; plus 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, June Miller, California; two sisters-in-law, Lois Smokov, New Mexico, and Alvina Smokov, California; as well as his 106-year-old aunt, Lydia Grekoff and her daughter, Paul’s close cousin, Sandee Schmidt, North Dakota; plus many other cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wasilie and Barbara Smokov; and his siblings, Mildred (Art) May, Doris (Bob) Kniefel, Johnny Smokov, and Jimmy Smokov. Donald Carl Steiger, Jr.

Donald Carl “Daddy Don” Steiger, 92 passed away on January 28, 2017. He was born on October 27, 1924, in Oshkosh, WI, to the late Carl E. and Ruth (Storm) Steiger. He was married to Mary Patricia (Speier) on November 20, 1954. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Katelyn Ruth Myhill. Don served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Wyoming and a beef cattleman. He owned and operated the JH Ranch at Hulett, WY and Steiger Charolais/ Dairy in Bentonville, AR, as well as served as a longtime herdsman for JACS Ranch in Bentonville. He was a well-respected, innovative seedstock breeder of Hereford and Charolais beef cattle. He raised and showed champion steers at the National Western Stock Show and at other national shows. He was an early adopter of technology in ranching, performance testing and beef cattle improvement. Don had a lifetime of active leadership in his community. Serving on the

boards of Schools, Farm Bureaus, Cattleman’s associations and was a 50+ year 4-H leader. He was a Christian and served on the Vestry boards of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Sundance, WY, an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville and was a long time Community Group leader at Fellowship Bible Church NWA. Don also helped lead the fledgling Republican Party in Benton County starting in 1970. He was County chair and enjoyed volunteering as a poll worker and at the Samaritan Community Center in Rogers. His surviving family includes his wife Mary Patricia of the home; his six children, Donald Carl “Rocky” Steiger Jr. of Rich Hill, MO, Fritz (Francis) Steiger of Bentonville, Katherine (Donald) Myhill of Chesapeake, VA, Donna (Scott) Winn of Bentonville, Lamar (Shari) Steiger of Bentonville, Alex (Shelly) Steiger of Cuba, MO. He is also survived by eighteen loving grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Connie Dempsey of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mary Garman of Sundance. Many nieces and nephews also survive him. Don was also preceded in death by his brother, Congressman William A. Steiger and his sister, Ann Haberstroh. Verne Lester McKinney

Verne Lester McKinney passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, after a battle with brain cancer. His wife of 14 years, Alice Johnson-McKinney, was at his side, along with close friends Martin and Shirley Schwend, and Frank and Sharon DeRudder. Verne was the firstborn of four sons to Lester and Cordella McKinney. He was born May 30, 1934, in Miles City, MT. After working as a truck driver, he operated the Hayloft Bar and Arena on the Old Roundup Road. As a teamster, Verne drove for the movie companies for 22 years, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed the rodeo and competed as a bulldogger until he turned 40. An avid hunter, Verne was able, in the last few years, to go on safaris in Africa, New Zealand and the Arctic. He enjoyed his mounts and the perfect place to display them was their summer log home in Bridger, MT. Survivors include his wife, Alice; one daughter, Leslie Pangburn (Rick) of Billings; daughter-in-law Betty McKinney; grandson Ryan McKinney (Stephanie); Alice’s daughter Becky Johnson-Cecil; granddaughter Megan

Tony Woods

Alfred “Tony” Thomas Woods passed peacefully on Feb. 23, 2017, at the Ruby Valley Hospital in Sheridan, MT. He was born to Earl and Grace (Weingart) Woods on his great-grandfather’s homestead near Silver Star, MT on Sept. 2, 1930. Tony attended school in Silver Star and Twin Bridges. He graduated from Twin Bridges High School in 1948, where he participated in both football and basketball. He married Ruth Corienne Massey on June 13, 1953, in Butte, MT. They were married for 55 years and were blessed with one son, Douglas Leroy Woods. Tony loved his family, ranching and being outdoors. He lived his entire 86 years within three miles of the family ranch. He had been a member of Twin Bridges School Board, National Farmers Organization, the Church of the Valley, and the Three Rivers Chapter of the Back Country Horseman of Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Ruth; his son, Doug; brother, Richard Woods; sisterin-law, Billie Jo Woods; and brother-inlaw, Russell Edwards. Tony is survived by two grand-

daughters, Bailey (Nimon) Badgley of Hickory, North Carolina and Kacee Woods of Nampa Idaho; daughter-inlaw, Sheryl Woods of Dillon; sisters; Pearl Edwards of Butte, Lois (Russell) Hartse of Missoula, and Jesse (Fred) Seibert of Scottsdale., Arizona; sister-

Two Creek Monture Ranch honored with Environmental Stewardship Award The Two Creek Monture Ranch, from Ovando, MT, has been recognized as the 2017 Montana Environmental Stewardship Award winners. Ranch managers Wayne and Karalee Slaght and family accepted the award Dec. 9 at the Montana Stockgrowers Association Annual Convention and trade show in Billings, MT. The Two Creek Monture Ranch will now represent Montana at the Region IV Environmental Stewardship Award competition in Denver this spring. Like the old 4-H motto, the ranch team is focused on “making the best better.” “That, to me, is that it means to be a good steward,” Karalee said. “It’s keeping up with new ideas for improving all of these things.” The Slaghts manage about 21,000 acres – half deeded and half leased – for owners Ralph and Toone Burchenal on the southern edge of the complex and greatly celebrated Crown of the Continent ecosystem in western Montana. It’s arguably one of the last “best” places in the lower 48, yet the Burchenal and Slaght continue to work to make it even better for future generations with decades of conservation and stewardship behind them and still ahead. This is really two ranches combined

into one by Ralph and Toone Burchenal of Cincinnati. Part of the original ownership group of the Cincinnati Bengals’ American Football League team in the 1960s, Ralph Burchenal bought the Two Creek Ranch in 1973 and added the adjoining Monture Ranch 20 years ago, not long after Cora Barbour died. Barbour and her husband Tom, who passed away in 1979, were highly respected ranchers and conservationists in the Blackfoot and in statewide circles. She left a legacy of giving through the Chutney Foundation, which has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to causes throughout Powell County and elsewhere. In Missoula the foundation has bolstered the likes of Partnership Health Center and the Montana Museum of Art and Culture. The Burchenals and their families are frequent visitors to Ovando and support the ranch’s ongoing conservation and restoration efforts. Greg Neudecker, with the Montana Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, has worked with the Slaght family for more than 25 years and recommended the ranch for the award. “Right now, we have all the critters that were here 200 years ago when Merriweather Lewis came through here. So from a working lands perspective, we don’t have anything else like

that in the lower 48 states and very few places in the world – so it’s a very, very special place,” Neudecker said. “It has old growth forests, incredible aspen stands, riparian areas, native bunch grass prairies, glaciated pothole wetlands – it’s got everything, and that’s due in large part to their stewardship.” Of course, the ranch team’s main focus is the cattle. About 900 make their home on the commercial cow-calf ranch, and they not only co-exist, but play an important part in improving the landscape. Wayne was raised on the neighboring Monture Ranch, where his father worked and managed for most of his ranching career, too. Wayne had been managing the Monture Ranch for more than 15 years when the Burchenals purchased and added it to the Two Creek Ranch, where Wayne, son Ben and brother-in-law Ken Kovatch now manage and work together on private, state and federal land.

“It’s so important to prove – especially to the Fish & Wildlife guys – that cattle are a useful tool for the land,” Wayne said. “They do co-exist with wildlife, which is quite proven on this ranch.” They’ve been able to grow the cattle herd over the years by not only making their deeded land more productive, but by fostering relationships that have led to new and continued leased grazing opportunities on neighboring state and federal lands. They work to improve owned and leased land alike with strategic rotational grazing, water development and riparian restoration projects. “We realized we needed to work with all these federal and state agencies – we have to be on the same page,” Wayne said. “We’re here to partner with those folks to help manage the entire landscape. It we weren’t here and they were subdividing us and turning this into houses, we’ve all realized we’d all be in trouble.” Managing a landscape full of endangered or threatened species – including grizzly bears, wolves and bull trout – plus abundant elk, deer, Sandhill cranes, turkeys and trumpeter swans, requires planning, innovation and a lot of collaboration in order to stay in business and balance a healthy ecosystem. “Those species are all indicators – grizzly bears are large landscape indicators, bull trout are clean water indicators, trumpeter swans are healthy wetland indicators. So those are all indicators of how well a landscape has been managed,” Neudecker said. “One of the things that wildlife is completely compatible with is ranching. If we don’t have ranching and livestock and private landowners to maintain these open landscapes, we don’t have places for these wild critters to roam, either.” The ranch played a key role in the rehabilitation of bull trout redds (spawn(continued on page 18)

these things, and then he also has courage to share failures or challenges so the next neighbor can do it a little better and the third guy can do it a little bit better still.” Like his father and ranching mentors before him, Wayne’s focus on making the ‘best, better,’ is geared toward leaving the land and leadership of the industry in better shape with the next generation. Played a critical role in returning the final missing species Merriweather Lewis noted in the Blackfoot Valley 200 years ago. Ranch owners Ralph and Toone Burchenal made the initial financial donation to the Trumpeter Swan Restoration Project, and the ranch ushered the first breeding pair onto a restored wetland. Today, more than 10 pairs of Trumpeter Swans are established in the Blackfoot Valley. Developed riparian grazing plans and cooperative agreements to bring Federally Threatened bull trout spawning sites on Monture Creek from a low of eight redds in 1989 to a high of 92 redds, averaging 50 redds annually over the course of the past 30 years. Site of the first grizzly bear depredation on a calf documents in the Blackfoot Valley in more than 50 years. Installed the valley’s first grizzly bear resistant fencing, leading other ranchers to do the same. Mile High Night Hereford Sale in Denver Grosses $548,750 KANSAS CITY, MO — The Here ford breed garnered attention this year at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver at the Mile High Night Hereford Sale. An estimated 5,000 attended the sale Jan. 13 on the stadium floor. “The Mile High Night and Mile High Eve sales both showed a strong demand for Hereford genetics this year at the National Western Stock Show,” said Joe Rickabaugh, AHA director of seedstock marketing. “Both were solid sales for the Hereford breed, which again presented a stellar set of cattle both on the hill and in the yards in Denver.” The elite 30 lot Hereford offering brought forth prominent genetics from established operations across the coun try. When auctioneers James M. Bird well and Cody Lowderman lowered the gavel for the final time, 30 lots grossed $548,750 for an average of $18,292. Six and one-half bull lots grossed $131,00 and averaged $22,545. Twen ty-three and one-half females grossed $417,750 and averaged $17,777. The high-selling Lot 4, a pick of the 2017 spring heifer calves from NJW Polled Herefords, Sheridan, WY, com manded $110,000 and was purchased by Pablo Martin, Herra, Argentina.

The second high-seller was Lot X, semen shares in B&C Stockman 6026D ET consigned by Austin Breed ing, Miami, TX; DelHawk Cattle Com pany, Earlville, IL; Lowderman Cattle Company, Macomb, IL; Foggy Bottom Farm, Taneytown, MD; Ole McDonald Farm, Byron Center, MI; and Express Ranches, Yukon, OK, sold for $85,000. Also commanding $30,000 was Lot 33. Hogbach Farm, Landrum, SC, took home the right to pick the 2016 fall heifer calves from

Hoffman Ranch, Thedford, NE Lot XX, a full sibling pregnancy to BR Bell Air 6011, consigned by the Barber Ranch, Channing, TX, was purchased for $30,000 by Rosebrook Angus, of Dexter, OR. Rounding out the top lots at $25,000 was Lot 7 from Jensen Bros., Court land, KS. The pick of the Jensen Bros. bulls, either in the yards or on the hill, was purchased by Harvie Ranch and RSK Ranch, Olds, Alberta, Canada. Lot 3, one-half interest in Churchill Gunpowder 657D ET, consigned by Churchill Cattle Co., Manhattan, MT, also brought $25,000. The one-half in terest buyers included P.W. Gillibrand Cattle, Simi Valley, CA, and Scott and Pip Hann, Truro Whiteface, Australia. Following college, Nicodemus was trying to find his way in the career world and consulted with his father, who had previously attended auctioneer school and worked for Torrington Livestock Markets, on becoming an auctioneer. After some instruction and a few years practicing his chant “behind the wheel” of a truck at a Nebraska feedyard, Nicodemus decided he was ready to move back to Wyoming and paid a call to Lex Madden at Torrington Livestock Markets. Fast forward to today. Nicodemus admits that he was not necessarily looking for an auctioneering job when he called Madden, but after time spent as a field representative, received a chance to sell cattle. The auctioneer has progressed from selling weigh cows to larger feeder cattle sales. He considers his job at Torrington Livestock Markets to be a great mentoring opportunity with the

Madden brothers, a pair of auctioneers who Nicodemus regards as two of the greatest. Lex is the 1998 World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, and Shawn won the title in 2001. This is the second year Nicodemus has competed in the WLAC Qualifying Events and also qualified for the WLAC. Looking to June, Nicodemus is “still on cloud nine and extremely honored” by his Midwestern Regional win but already has plans in store to prepare for the WLAC. Nicodemus says that he believes a WLAC win would be more than the actual honor of the title, but the opportunity to better himself through competition and represent the state of Wyoming, its livestock marketing industry and the producers he works for each sale day. Also making a great showing were Reserve Champion, Mike Godberson, Pawnee, Okla., and Runner-up Champion, Dan Koupal, Dante, SD. A live cattle sale took place with actual bidders in the seats. Contestants were judged on the clarity of their auction chant; vocal quality; ability to catch bids and conduct the sale; and if the judge would hire the auctioneer. Judges for each qualifying event are livestock market owners and managers from across the United States. About the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship In June 1963, the Livestock Marketing Association held the first annual World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC) at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver, Colorado. The purpose: to spotlight North America’s top livestock auctioneers and to salute their traditionally important role in the competitive livestock marketing process. That year, 23 auctioneers from the United States and Canada sold the same 20 head of cattle over and over again. The contest was held at hotels until 1967, when it traveled to its first LMA member market. Since then the WLAC has been held in conjunction with the LMA Marketing Industry Convention at member markets around the U.S. and Canada. Recent locations include California, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, Kansas, South Dakota and Alberta, Canada. Though the rules have changed, the enthusiasm for the competi-

On average each year, nearly 100 auctioneers enter the qualifying events and only 31 (10 from each qualifying event, one from the auctioneering competition at Calgary Stampede) are selected to compete in the WLAC. The championship consists of three stages: the regional qualifying events held at different markets around the country, followed by the semi-finals and the finals that are held each June in conjunction with the LMA Annual Convention. Contestants competing for the World Champion title must be 18 years old, employed as a livestock auctioneer and sponsored by a local auction market that shares in the favorable publicity generated by the winners. United States Cattle on Feed Up One Percent Released February 24, 2017, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.8 million head on February 1, 2017. The inventory was 1 percent above February 1, 2016. Placements in feedlots during January totaled 1.98 million head, 11 percent above 2016. Net placements were 1.93 million head. During January, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 380,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 445,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 585,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 410,000, 900-999 pounds were 116,000, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 45,000 head. New placement weight categories are available this month. The new cat-

egories are 800-899 pounds, 900-999 pounds, and 1,000 pounds and greater. Marketings of fed cattle during January totaled 1.75 million head, 10 percent above 2016. Other disappearance totaled 53,000 head during January, 5 percent below 2016. 2016 Cattle on Feed and Annual Size Group Estimates Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head represented 81.2 percent of all cattle and calves on feed in the United States on January 1, 2017. This is comparable to the 80.4 percent on January 1, 2016. Marketings of fed cattle for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head during 2016 represented 87.1 percent of total cattle marketed from all feedlots in the United States, down slightly from 87.2 percent during 2015.

New Research Examines Beef Demand Indices Beef demand is critical to understand and monitor as it directly influences overall beef industry prosperity. When beef demand strengthens, beef and cattle prices for the entire industry are higher than they otherwise would be, says Kansas State University Economist Glynn Tonsor. This highlights the clear economic value in accurately measuring beef demand. One way to do this is through construction of an index that provides an easy to understand, single-measure indicator of beef demand over time. A beef checkoff-funded study by Glynn T. Tonsor, and Ted. C. Schroeder, both of Kansas State University, recently examined the feasibility of developing new foodservice and grocery store beef demand indices. “Despite the usefulness of existing demand indices for monitoring demand strength, all have a number of important limitations,” says Tonsor. “Indices that are updated more frequently, and that can be dissected by product or market region, can be especially informative about where demand is changing most. Armed with such information, the beef industry could better adjust, target and monitor product marketing strategies.” As beef demand changes over time, insights from regularly updated demand indices would provide the entire industry a barometer of demand strength. Operators throughout the nation’s retail sector could use this information to benchmark their own situation within the broader beef demand position. If demand is improving in a retailer’s region but not in their operation, that information might lead to more timely solutions to their marketing challenges. Conversely, if a retailer’s operation is experiencing stronger beef demand than their broader region, that could provide valuable lessons about the elements of “winning strategies.”
