In Memory Raphael Eichacker 1940-2013

Dad passed away on 4/6/2013, just a month after last year’s bull sale. When we delivered bulls the end of April and the 1st part of May, many people commented “gosh we talked to Ray at the sale, we didn’t know anything was wrong”. The truth is, he didn’t know either, or knowing Dad he didn’t want to inconvenience anyone with a doctor’s appointment because it was sale time. But shortly after that he was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. Our Dad was a true pioneer and not afraid to go out on a limb and try something different. You had to be in order to start A-I’ing to Simmentals back in 1970. The neighbors no doubt thought he was nuts. Think of how the Simmental breed has transformed over the years. Dad always said to try to stay in the middle, it’s like a pendulum swinging, if you’re on the end it takes a long time for the trend to get back to you. If you’re in the middle, at least you catch it both ways. One of Dad’s great loves was heat checking and A-I’ing cows, because only Dad had the patience and the keen eye to make it work so well. Think of how the facilities have changed….from two posts with a head gate attached and a couple of wire mesh panels in 1970 to the Heatwatch System and continuous fence in the late 1990’s, to the different heat synchronization methods and embryo transfer of today. Also the sale protocols where he sold private treaty in the mid 70’s, had a bull sale in Kimball for 3-4 years in the late 70’s then back to private treaty for 20 years, then back to an auction sale in 2002 in Mitchell. Finally in 2008, his long term dream was achieved to hold the bull sale at home on the farm. Last year was Dad’s last bull sale and he couldn’t have been more pleased. Yes the bulls sold well, but more importantly, the huge crowd that showed up and people he got to visit with, you can’t believe what that meant to him. Dad always said “treat people how you would want to be treated yourself and they’ll come back”. Well, Dad, you must have been doing something right! We are sure you’re still here with us just in other ways and thanks for letting us follow in your footsteps.

Dear Cattlemen: Welcome to the Eichacker Simmentals/Red Angus and JK Angus bull sale. First, we would like to thank you for your interest in our programs. We know there are many options available to purchase a bull, but rest assured, your confidence in our programs won’t be taken lightly. As in the past we feel what really sets this sale apart from many others is the variety and selection. Simmental, Angus, Sim/Angus, Red Angus, Sim/Red Angus, heifer bulls, and performance bulls. There is sure to be something for everyone. We will again offer the mortality insurance where we help cost share part of the premium, check on details under “Insurance”. The interest in this program seems to grow every year, with your bull purchase being a major investment in your livestock program, it only makes sense to help protect it. We will again have the sale broadcast on DVAuction. We always hope everyone can make it to the sale, but if you can’t it’s a great option to get your bulls purchased. As we are always looking for ways to help make your bull selection easier, we are going to attempt to video all bulls ahead of sale time and have the videos available on our website, www.eichackersimmentals.com , and DVAuctions approximately one week prior to the sale. The video will feed on DVAuction during the sale, the bulls will still go through the ring, and we may also put up a couple of TV’s in the barn. Jeff & Sue, Billy, Ange, Laura & John, Ross, Patty Greetings fellow producers, As I sit here, pen in hand, it’s hard to believe that 35 years have passed since we had our first bull sale, and yet I am reminded whenever I look in the mirror it must be so. My very first sale was held in Miller, SD when my good friend John Engstrom and I teamed up to offer a small group of bulls. What a learning curve it has been since! I only wish I’d have kept a diary. I can’t begin to list the names of everyone who helped to guide me along the way, but there were many and to those I say “thank you.” In many of these opening letters there is talk of the markets and good times coming. We as producers have heard this many times and know it will happen. I would just like to tell of what has happened to use in 35 years. When we started gathering data, our weaning wgts. were 600# or less and we used a lot of creep feed to achieve those weights. We fed our cows what seemed to be a large amount of corn silage and alfalfa and had trouble keeping them in good shape. This past year our weaning wts. were 700-800#. We feed our cows corn stover, bean straw, wheat straw, CRP and a little protein and they stay in good shape.

We used to feed our bulls a ration containing 15-20#/head of corn silage and hay, and we struggled to achieve 1200# ywts. This group of bulls has never had more than 8# of corn/head, the silage is from corn that adjusted 9189 bu/acre and grass hay, and our yearling wgts are pushing 1500#. We have been able to achieve this through genetics. We always try to purchase some of the best I see sell every spring. Luckily, I’ve got some good partners with the same vision as mine so we can afford to do this. Over the years I’ve sat at many sales and watched lots of cattle sell. I see many different programs and philosophies offered. Right or wrong is every individual’s decision. We are always striving to do what we think we can do to keep us and our customers in the black. We believe in good cattle that flesh easy & yet still have the size & eye appeal that cattle feeders desire. I appreciate hearing from many of you telling me how well our calves have sold, or how well the cows are doing. It tells us we are on the right track. Announcements: Announcements made sale day take prece-

dence over printed material in sale catalog. Anyone attending this sale attends at their own risk. Eichacker Simmentals or JK Angus or any of the sale force will not be held responsible for any personal injury while attending this sale.Any need for a settlement will be for purchase price of bull only.

EPDs: The EPDs listed in the catalog are spring 2014 numbers. Feeding Arrangements & Delivery: We will offer to

feed the bulls at no charge until April 15, 2014. At that time they will be semen tested and delivered free of charge up to 300 miles. We will assist in making the most economical arrangements possible beyond that. We are not responsible for any injury or death to the bulls while in our care.

Health:

All bulls have been tested negative for BVD/PI. All cows are Johnes free. All genetic defect testing has been completed.

Insurance: Insurance will be available sale day.

This year we are going to offer mortality insurance at a reduced rate. There will be three options available and all are based off a % of the purchase price of the bull. Reduced rates are: 2 months @ 2%, 6 months @ 3%, 1 year @ 4%, normal rates are 3%, 4%, and 6% respectively. Because we are offering insurance at a reduced rate, we strongly recommend it especially for the 2 month period if the bulls remain at our place. Although the best possible care will be given, bulls will be bulls and anything is possible.

Calving Ease Score: We have put a column in with a calving ease score with 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars with 1 star being harder calving and 4 stars being the easiest calving score. The score is nothing scientific – it is just our opinions of what you could expect taking into consideration, BW, EPD’s, pedigree and structure of the bull. Do not compare the scores between breeds, for instance, don’t expect the same calving ease out of a Simmental with 3 stars as a Red Angus with 3 stars, each breed needs to be considered on their own. JK Angus bulls are marked in their footnotes as heifer bulls if we thought they would work on such. Semen Interest:

Eichacker Simmentals will retain 1/4 semen interest in all bulls sold and JK Angus will be retaining 1/3 semen interest in all bulls sold. Keep in mind, generally this means absolutely nothing, it only comes into play if semen is collected and sold.

Adjusted Scrotal: Actual scrotal measurements were taken

1-27-2014 then adjusted to a year of age using each breeds own formula for adjusted scrotal measurements. Scrotal measurements for the JK Angus bulls are actual, not adjusted.

Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): WDA is the weight of a bull on 1-27-2014 divided by the days of age.

126 Day Weight:

The 126 day gain was the average daily gain from the weaning weight until 1-27-2014.

Homozygous & Heterozygous: A homozygous black bull when mated to any black cows will give you a black calf. A heterozygous black bull carries a red gene, but when mated to black cows will give you a black calf unless your black cow carries a red gene, then you have a slight chance of getting a red calf, but neither will sire gray calves on black cows. The only way to get a gray calf is on a red cow that carries a dilutor gene. So if you have some colored cows that could carry the dilutor gene, a heterozygous black bull is a better choice because some of the calves that would be gray have the potential to be red, but that’s only if your cows have the dilutor gene and blacks do not carry it.

Much like his full brother did last year going to Dan Reidel. They are so similar in their make-up it's scarry. He is one of those bulls that every time you see him he has that look that says "here I am, stop and stare". Just not much I would change and what a set of feeders he would sire.

This is a nice pair of bulls, one weaned off a little heavier, but the other caught up quickly being the 5th highest gaining bull since weaning.

It's no secret this guy has been one of the favorites around here all year. He was the big butted, thick topped calf last summer. Now he's the big bellied, thick made, heavy muscled bull of the pen this winter. All that with only a 78 lb birth weight and with a free and easy moving structure. He has truly amazing birth weight to growth ratios, being 109 for BW, 114 for WW then 113 for YW. That ought to work for anyone. Then get into his EPD profile, WW & YW top 1%. This guy has a lot to offer the beef industry whether it's raising herd bulls like himself or siring a set of feeder calves that grow like a weed and can top the market.

What a fun set of ET brothers to sort through. It's always fun when a plan comes together. Their dam, T51, earned her way to the donor pen several years ago after raising several good ones and having a 109 WW ratio on 3 calves and her dam, P85, was a cow that never missed and it didn't hurt when we always scored her udder very high at calving. In general, these guys are fairly similar and should be considered performance cattle, although I see a few differences. AT51-3 is the #1 YW and 126 day gaining bull and #3 WDA over all Simmy's. And AT51-6 looks to be the calving ease bull of the group, having a smaller head and is a bit neater made. All are homozygous black.

These three full brothers are exactly what we had in mind when we purchased their dam, 9063W, or known around here as "Snapple" as the high selling female out of the 2010 Wild West Sale. She is a big, powerful female that offerd a huge EPD profile. Then when we mated her to an Angus sire that would put out a set of bulls that would fit the needs and desires of the commercial industry and we couldn't be more pleased. They are very uniform in their makeup, all 6 to 6.5 frame, tremendously long sided and very sound. Probably the biggest difference in one is a blaze face and the other two are solid black. Whether you just need one bull or would want to put all three together, you can't go wrong.
