Doucal’s Big City
Doucal’s Big City URBAN INSPIRATION FOR THE WOMEN’S FW20-21 COLLECTION, WHICH PROPOSES AN EXCITING JOURNEY AMONG THE ATMOSPHERES OF NEW YORK
ISPIRAZIONE URBAN PER LA COLLEZIONE WOMAN AI20-21 CHE PROPONE UN ENTUSIASMANTE VIAGGIO TRA LE ATMOSFERE DI NEW YORK
The neighbourhoods and atmospheres of New York inspire the women’s FW 20-21 collection of Doucal’s, characterising it with a strong urban matrix. Dedicated to Wall Street and the uniforms of the financial district are moccasins, derby shoes and loafers stolen from the men’s wardrobe, Chelsea boots with striking mixes of materials, smooth and hammered calfskins combined with tweed and herringbone, and monkey shoes – genuine icons of the collection – in total black brushed calfskin. The Monkey, with or without a heel, returns in needle-felt suede, with contrasting colours between the rubber outsole and upper. In its waxed suede version, wool check inserts echo the multi-ethnic spirit of Williamsburg. There is then the version with sheepskin lining and waterproof suede, as a throwback to the atmospheres of the East Village. Serena sneakers have instead been created for a walk in Central Park, with sheepskin inserts and ghillie fastenings, along with flighter sneakers featuring an extra light, matte and coarse outsole, in sporty calfskin and suede, with colour blocks or in pale pink and burgundy.

Fila x Maison Mihara Yasuhiro
THE ITALIAN SPORTSWEAR BRAND PRESENTS A CAPSULE IN COLLABORATION WITH THE JAPANESE DESIGNER WHO AIMS TO ELEVATE SPORTS FASHION
Fila x Maison Mihara Yasuhiro
The combination of Fila's tradition and high fashion elements of Maison Mihara Yasuhiro characterizes the subversive and uninhibited tone of the collection. The capsule is inspired by the heritage of the sportswear brand, taking up the typical elements of the brand with the fun and extremely trendy style of Yasuhiro and using the characteristic colours of the logo as a hue palette. In a clash/encounter between the elegance of the Italian style and the trendiness of the Tokyo inspiration, the designer confirms the aesthetics of high fashion sports, and projects the brand towards a more exclusive client target. As for the materials, fit and quality are guaranteed through the use of the classic Fila technology, which involves the use of innovative and comfortable fabrics typical of sportswear. Mihara Yasuhiro goes beyond clothing and chooses T1, a classic model of Fila shoes, as a prototype for the transformation. Thus was born FM1, the new shoe that maintains the performance characteristics of the original model in an innovative guise characterized by the exclusive "Lego" sole.

The debut of Dragontail Tech GTX, the shoe ready for every challenge FROM THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN GARMONT, BRAND LEADER IN THE PRODUCTION OF MOUNTAIN AND OUTDOOR FOOTWEAR, AND MICHELIN, ARRIVES THE NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE SHOE FOR APPROACH ENTHUSIASTS CAPABLE OF TACKLING THE HIGHEST SUMMITS Approach enthusiasts are attentive to the grip and performance of their equipment and are always in search of new solutions capable of satisfying and increasing their performance levels. With these needs in mind, Garmont and Michelin co-designed the new Dragontail Tech GTX, a versatile and lightweight shoe that is also capable of offering a high level of comfort for long hikes and a wide variety of situations. In fact, the Michelin sole gives the shoe maximum flexibility and lightness, and is equipped with a specific double compound for the approach in the toe and sculptures with sipings designed to ensure greater adaptability and grip on all terrains, but its technicality is enhanced on gravel, exposed rocks, mixed trails. The tread design has been developed to offer maximum flexibility and traction, guaranteeing the wearer 360-degree freedom of movement on all types of terrain. To make the sole extremely light it has been designed with fiber lite technology, while, to offer maximum stability to the wearer, triangular sculptures have been inserted in the heel to improve braking and make the walk stable even on downhill. The sole is accompanied by an ecological Ortholite® UltraLiteTM footbed characterised by a combined structure: a rigid and stable compound in the heel area and a soft ultralite compound in the middle and forefoot area. The 1.6mm suede upper features Gore-Tex® Extended Comfort technology that adapts to any climate, allowing for use in multiple seasons. Compared to the previous model, it has a tighter fit, thus combining extreme precision and maximum forefoot comfort. Finally, the Heel Lock technology perfectly encloses the heel, keeping the foot still and helping prevent the formation of blisters, while the closure with laces up to the toe offers better climbing performance and a custom fit.

Santori Pellami, with Naturella® a lower impact TODAY, ALSO PEF, PRODUCT ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT, CERTIFIES THE INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PRODUCTIVE PROCESSES THAT ARE AT THE HEART OF THE EXTRAORDINARY LEATHERS PRODUCED BY THIS TANNERY FROM MONTE URANO Santori Pellami Spa, the company with an ultra-secular history that is now in its fourth generation, is cutting-edge when it comes to research onto sustainable solutions, which include a reduced environmental impact in its productive processes, wastewater treatment, as well as the development of materials and products. In this sense, among the most innovative proposals of Santori Pellami, is Naturella®, a brand patented in 2018 where high quality leather is tanned using biodegradable, organic ingredients, with low use of heavy metals and without chromium. Requirements that are joined by abrasion resistance, colour fastness and improved colour absorption (with a reduced use of dyes and additives), grab strength, and dry and wet crocking for footwear and fashion needs. Today, Naturella® is still the first tannery product to have ever assessed its lifecycle in compliance with European PEF- Product Environmental Footprint; with test results confirming the innovation and sustainability of the tanning process used in its production. A result that has rewarded Santori Pellami’s commitment to sustainability: its investments have in fact required considerable resources, but at the same time it has allowed the tannery to implement eco-friendly processes, thanks to the elimination of metals from the processes and improvements made to the manufacturing plants. The result of all this is Naturella®, an evolution that fully replies to the increasingly pressing needs of the fashion system for sustainable products. The study undertaken by Santori Pellami on the environmental footprint also took into consideration the organisation of the company with a special focus on the efficiency of “short-chains”, but on an international level, with the possibility of extending the Naturella® model to the main European markets and especially Italy, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Germany, and Serbia.

Research & development in the name of sustainability RECOGNISED FOR ITS KNOW-HOW, TESSITURA ATTILIO IMPERIALI IS HIGHLY REGARDED BY NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS AND COMPANIES FOR ITS EXPERIMENTAL COLLECTIONS AND FOR THE HIGH QUALITY OF ITS FABRICS AND MATERIALS The renowned Como-based company specialises in the production of fabrics for clothing, footwear and accessories and has resumed its activities after the health emergency, meeting the new expectations of the market focused on sustainability, one of the company’s core values. In fact, it has been travelling down a path of environmental, ethical and social responsibility for some time now. An important prerogative supported by a concrete commitment, a real ‘green’ guarantee for the brands it collaborates with. From here the company starts again, giving life to fabrics that combine the research of materials with the value of quality, while respecting the environment and production processes. First and foremost, Raso (satin), the company’s pride and joy, made with organic silk and recycled viscose, and the Olona canvas, made with a mix of organic and recycled cotton. The silk is GOTS certified which ensures the control of the entire production process, from the cultivation of the fibre to the processing and finishing of the yarn. The Ecovero-branded viscose comes from recycled cellulose that in no way contributes to deforestation. In the face of growing demand, the production of sustainable products has become a very important part of the products. Tessitura Attilio Imperiali has also embarked on a path that will lead it to be certified according to the main industry standards, making it possible to certify part of the sustainability content of the raw materials used in its productions. “We are ready to look to the future by finding new solutions and changing the pace if necessary,” says Alessandra Imperiali, CEO of Tessitura Attilio Imperiali. “The fashion and economic system is changing, the needs are growing day by day, changing the demand. In 2014 we signed the Greenpeace Detox protocol which aims at eliminating the use and discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020, and we have always focused our determination, commitment, and total involvement on this.” The high quality of sustainable products is offered at a promotional price in line with the unsustainable offer and the company is already thinking about expanding the range of "green" products, involving its most loyal suppliers in the development process. “The collection will meet the demand of our partners, realigning our proposal with greater customisation and collaboration between the parties,” underlines Luca Viviani, General Manager of Tessitura Attilio Imperiali. “This moment of slowdown has also proved to be an opportunity to reflect on the value, quality and authenticity of our offer. We are working on new communication formats and the involvement of our contacts to ensure the usual availability and a careful offer in line with expectations. A commitment on our part to restart and rethink the future.”

The secret to keep them in shape and sustainable FOR THE COMPANY LUIGI CARNEVALI A NEW LINE OF ECOSUSTAINABLE FABRICS MADE WITH RAW MATERIALS CONTAINING RECYCLED MATERIAL. Since 1908 the name Luigi Carnevali has meant quality, reliability and accuracy in the production of self- and thermo-adhesive reinforcements for footwear, leather goods and leatherwear. The search for innovative articles and the quality of its products have always made Luigi Carnevali a point of reference for the sector. Research and development of new items made it this far as to imagine an Eco Friendly line of fabrics. Why an Eco Friendly line of fabrics? Because Luigi Carnevali has always considered every resource unique and precious, making - social, economic or environmental - sustainability the centre of its activity since the distant 1908. Selected suppliers, raw materials not deriving from animal-based sources and free of dangerous chemicals, in compliance with the strictest regulations, or the use of solvent-free thermoadhesives (zero emissions) are evidence of the tangible importance that is given to sustainability. By believing and acting daily according to these principles, the company has come to the decision to undertake a further and significant investment: creating a new line of reinforcement fabrics, which will be followed by others, made with raw materials containing recycled material. Thus, ever more eco-sustainable fabrics which although keep their functional characteristics and performances intact.

Xircular, sneakers that embrace the circular economy MADE WITH FINPROJECT XL EXTRALIGHT® SUSTAINABLE+ SOLES AND AN UPPER OF RECYCLED ORIGINS, XIRCULAR HAS BEEN CONCEIVED BY COMBINING 3D PARAMETRIC DESIGN AND 3D PRINTING. Already starting with its name, the Xircular sneaker concept reveals its desire to push for a circular economy model, which can be combined with fashion and avant-garde productive processes. Presented at Lineapelle 2020 by the Finproject Group, Xircular perfectly blends technology with a bold design, and respect for the environment, while also demonstrating how a sustainable project can have a glam allure. “XIRCULAR is a project that best sums up our mission, where we make the most of the possibilities that technology and creativity offer to innovate our sector, with an eye to the future and respect for the environment – comments Nicola Vecchiola, Director of the Finproject Moulding Division – In the development of our sneaker concept, we experimented with what was an unusual technological approach for us, showing how it is possible to produce objects with a unique and striking design even if it is from production scraps”. Xircular is made with XL EXTRALIGHT® Sustainable+ soles, a newly developed product, which represents for Finproject a real declaration of commitment to the environment. Sustainable+ retains all the extraordinary characteristics typical of XL EXTRALIGHT® - an iconic product of Finproject – but 51% of the material that makes up the formula comes from the highly engineered process of recovery and mixing of by-products deriving from the production waste of the factories of the Marches company. This allows for a concrete saving of mineral resources and avoids the transfer to landfills of production residues. The Xircular upper is also made from recycled material, underlining Finproject's desire to direct the production system towards a model of circular economy and sustainable growth.

Lanfranchi, sustainability in its DNA THIS LEADING REALITY IN THE PRODUCTION OF ZIPPERS HAS A POLICY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY THAT IS EXPRESSED NOT ONLY IN ITS PRODUCT LINES, BUT ALSO ON AN ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL, AND ECONOMIC LEVEL THAT INCLUDES ALL PROCESSES In the world, Lanfranchi has become synonymous with zippers of the highest quality for the fashion industry, positioning itself among the market’s global leaders. A record achieved also thanks to the adoption of high standards of sustainability that regards not only product development, but also the productive and environmental chain, people, and the territory. Lanfranchi's zippers are all Oeko-Tex certified, they also adhere to the Greenpeace Detox protocol against toxic substances for humans and the environment. The zip ribbons are made of Newlife, a fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, and GOTS certified organic cotton. Production is fully integrated and Made in Italy in every phase of the productive cycle – weaving, sewing, dyeing, cutting, fusion and galvanic treatment, assembling, and even the realization of machinery – allowing Lanfranchi to implement an integrated management system for occupational health, work safety, and environmental protection in accordance with international standards including OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001. However, the commitment of Lanfranchi goes beyond the minimum required by law and sees the implementation of new technologies to achieve the highest standards of eco-sustainability without penalizing the quality and look of the zippers. Like the new futuristic galvanic treatment facility which, although it has doubled the production capacity, allows for savings of up to 30% in water consumption and 35% in sewage-discharged water. Fumes are treated according to BATs (Best Available Techniques) so that emissions can meet the highest ecological standards. The weaving facility features energy from renewable sources (solar panels) with a savings of over 23 tons of CO2 every year. Production scraps - coming from brass teeth, zinc, and nylon are all salvaged and given to companies that take care of their recycling. All packages are marked RESY and made from recycled cardboard that is 100% recyclable. For Lanfranchi, sustainability is an issue at 360°, a value that lies in its DNA and products.

Google traces its raw materials FROM THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN GOOGLE AND WWF SWEDEN, ARRIVES A PLATFORM THAT WILL HELP FASHION BRANDS TO SOURCE RAW MATERIALS IN A MORE SUSTAINABLE WAY Fashion must resolve its problem with sustainability: today, the World Bank estimates that the sector is responsible for 20% of wastewater and up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. A large part of the CO2 footprint of fashion arrives from its raw materials: this is why those who are genuinely interested in being sustainable can no longer procrastinate on this issue. To help fashion brands make more aware and sustainable decisions with regards to the sourcing of raw materials, today, the collaboration between Google and WWF Sweden is kicked off, giving life to a platform that will trace more than 20 kinds of raw materials, from cotton to synthetic materials. This new tool that makes use of Google’s automatic machine-learning system (with access to the complex data of the Google Earth Engine) and WWF’s knowledge of the environmental impact of a product’s lifetime, will assign each raw material and sourcing origin a score that will take into account aspects like water availability, atmospheric pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, the quantity of waste generated, etc.… allowing brands to make the most sustainable sourcing decisions. The platform will also help cut back on risks: for example, if a brand is used to sourcing its materials from a certain supplier, it could undertake specific actions to help reduce some of the negative impacts. The platform is set up like an open tool, is updated automatically, and can even extends its range to complement other existing systems in the calculation of environmental impact: like the Sustainable Apparel Coalition materials sustainability index, the Textile Exchange raw materials assessment, or the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s reconstruction of responsible supply chains in the garment and footwear industries. Although Google declined to name brand partners, it seems that Stella McCartney worked on the test pilot, with multiple luxury, denim and athletic brands having already signed on to participate.

EMM, recycled leather “Made in Marche”
EMM, la pelle riciclata “made in Marche”
THE NEW PRODUCT BY EREDI MEZZABOTTA MARIA SRL LOOKS TO THE FUTURE, RESPONSIBLY TRANSFORMING TANNERY WASTE INTO THE NEW ECOLOGICAL PRODUCT CALLED “BYPELL”.
GUARDA AL FUTURO IL NUOVO PRODOTTO DI EREDI MEZZABOTTA MARIA SRL, CHE TRASFORMA RESPONSABILMENTE GLI SCARTI DI CONCERIA IN UN NUOVO PRODOTTO ECOLOGICO, IL BYPELL.
It is now known that when producing leather 75% of the raw material is not used and is often destined for landfill. The heart of this project patented by EMM is the recycling of the raw material, also known as Wet Blue, which is recompacted for its new use without the help of adhesives that can be harmful to the environment. This clean technology allows recycling 95% of the process water and the waste streams are converted into energy that is fed back into the production process with an 80% reduction in environmental impact. ByPell is therefore made up of 60% tannery waste which is minutely shredded until it forms fibres. These leather fibres are then combined with synthetic fibres and weaved into a fabric through a process of “water fusion” that compacts them into a single material. At this point, it goes through various finishing phases, including pigmentation, to obtain the material in the form of a roll, perfect for optimising the cut, thus resulting in a higher yield and greater savings. EMM’s challenge is to evolve the leather while maintaining its performance and most popular features, such as appearance, tactile sensation and smell. ByPell is 40% lighter and five times more resistant to abrasion than full grain leather, thanks to its special structure that makes it resistant to tearing. All these factors make it ideal for footwear, leather goods and automotive.

Liquid Printed Natives, born from a bath of liquid gel THE CANADIAN BRAND OF NATIVE SHOES PRESENTS AN INNOVATIVE AND FUTURISTIC METHOD OF PRODUCTION BASED ON 3D PRINTING DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION WITH PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITIES The world of footwear is subject in recent times to renewal in the sign of sustainability and the number of projects that use recycled materials like the PET of plastic bottles, or renewable materials like wood, wool, and cotton, are multiplying. There are also realities that make research onto sustainable processes both in the company and in the supply chain a priority. On this last front, it’s worth highlighting the innovative experience of Native Shoes, a Canadian brand that in the past has already created footwear from plants and recycled materials. Today, the brand presents Liquid Printed Shoes, a futuristic and innovative method of production based on 3D printing. Developed in collaboration with the MIT Self-Assembly Lab and the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, this patented method of 3D printing allows two of Native Shoes’ most popular designs – Audrey flat shoes and Jefferson sneakers-, to be made-to-order. Liquid Printed Natives seem to magically emerge from a bath of liquid gel: black and bright, they have a smooth and solid look. First, they are designed using a computer, then they are directly printed in a container with a reusable water-based gel formula. The finished shoes that emerge do not have any excess material and they do not require support of any kind. The 3D printing also allows for customisation and currently under development is a technology that will allow a 3D scan of the foot to be done either at the store or via an APP, so customers can then send their orders. The material used for the 3D printing is 50% recycled EVA, a higher percentage than what is allowed by traditional injection moulding. Production times take slightly longer than direct injection (2 hours and 40 minutes), but since the product is much faster to market, it compensates for these longer times. However, the real added value is provided by the adoption of a made-to-order model that allows Liquid Printed Shoes to be sold without having to create excess inventory that might just end up sitting in the warehouse.

Noxis Green, Over Teak’s sustainable line THE NEW PROPOSALS OF THE SUSTAINABLE COLLECTION OF THE APULIAN SHOE FACTORY ARE MADE UP OF RECYCLED MATERIALS. IN SOME CASES PRODUCTION AND COMPONENTS ARE 100% MADE IN ITALY. “During the days of the MICAM fair in Milan, this last February, we met a large number of visitors and professionals who greatly appreciated our proposals for the next autumn/winter season. In particular, our entirely new ‘green’ lines, made with ecological and high-quality materials. Respect for the environment and material recycling have become milestones in our production process”. This is how, in a post on Facebook, Over Teak – a shoe factory active since 1958 in Barletta - announced the presentation to the experts of its own sustainable footwear line. Noxis Green is a new ecological collection, entirely dedicated to eco-sustainability. Footwear made using only and exclusively recycled or natural materials, such as cotton derived from the recycling of Pet, various natural fibers, cork soles. A through search for the most suitable suppliers has led Over Teak to create models in which all parts of the shoe come from recycled materials (laces, eyelets, lining, insoles...). Even the packaging is made with recycled and recyclable material, and is designed to save space: a box of the Noxis Green line is equivalent to the size of two standard boxes (so as reduce by half the transport related CO2 emissions). “Also noteworthy is that not only every material used comes from recycled material, but that part of the collection is also 100% made in Italy, both for the assembly made in our production plant, and for the choice of sustainable materials coming entirely from Italian companies”, specifies Over Teak.
Noxis Green, la linea sostenibile di Over Teak TUTTI MATERIALI RICICLATI QUELLI CHE COMPONGONO LE NUOVE PROPOSTE DELLA COLLEZIONE SOSTENIBILE DEL CALZATURIFICIO PUGLIESE. IN ALCUNI CASI 100% MADE IN ITALY PER PRODUZIONE E COMPONENTI.

In other words, there are many variables to consider, also because the logic is that of constant improvement that continues over time with increasingly ambitious goals. In any case, when considering an average of the requests we receive, the cost to start-up a new project of sustainability ranges from around 4,000.00€ to 30,000.00€”.
conto terzi?
Why should a company choose sustainability? “Because the advantages are off the charts, and data demonstrates how companies with a sustainable vocation are more resilient, competitive and high performance. And because continuing ‘like we always have’ has shown itself to be an out-of-date and self-destructive policy. Sustainability is a strategic choice, which, once integrated into your own business model, translates into actions coherent with the protection of the environment and human rights, with economic advantages. An ethical choice that also creates opportunities for development. Like all megatrends, the first to start down this pathway were large companies. Today, it’s no longer a matter of trends but of effective changes to the system: in Italy, where the productive fabric is more or less made up by SMEs, this strategy is increasingly the order of the day. Our country has social and environmental laws that are already quite evolved, and so it is ready to create a competitive advantage by working also on responsibility that extends to include the entire supply chain”.
How is sustainability transformed from a cost into a competitive advantage?“ Sustainability is clearly a competitive advantage, a tool of development capable of generating value that lasts over time. If many companies still perceive it as a cost, it is because they are submersed by requests to adapt to an infinite number of requirements that are never the same, making it difficult to orient themselves and even simply understand. If from one end, it’s important to work towards incorporating sustainability into company culture, while perceiving it as the extraordinary opportunity that it effectively represents, from the other end, it’s essential to create a system of unequivocal and shared requirements to minimize the costs of adaptation. One road that is certainly of help is adopting a structured and ‘sustainable’ pathway like 4sustainability®, which is recognized as valid by leading international brands. A brand, which in fact certifies the concrete adherence of companies to the sustainability roadmap”.
Do you believe the post-Covid era will have repercussions on the level of awareness fashion companies have towards the issue of sustainability? “The effects of Covid-19 changed our perception of the future and amplified the uncertainty of both organisations and individuals. However, it is exactly in such scenarios that entrepreneurs feel a stronger need to act, while managers feel the need to encourage and support decisions for change. It’s not only about making the present safe, but also of knowing how to imagine the future by equipping ourselves to take charge of it. So, the future can’t help but be sustainable. Companies, in addition to economic performance, are measured by and will increasingly be measured by their ability to integrate ethics and business on all levels of the company. Merchant banks, leading international investors, small investment funds, and business angels… all agree on their interest when it comes to investing in socially responsible companies, capable of managing ESG factors (environmental, social, and governance) in the right way. From their end, consumers believe in awareness and prefer to make their purchases from businesses with a clean social reputation”.
What are your next projects? “We are finalising the methodology for a sole standard based on multiple dimensions and levels of implementation, which has been created for fashion & luxury companies that choose sustainability: we would like to be increasingly present and close to companies that are serious in their intentions, with methods and tools capable of creating real value for all stakeholders. With 4sustainability®, we would like to make the innovative transformation of business models easier and safer, and this includes in particular SMEs, which are the cornerstones of the European industrial system. For this reason, all our projects revolve around supportive technologies and knowledge, with a structured pathway of webinars (www.training4sustainability.it) developed to transfer expertise to market operators”.

TANNING PROCESS
THE RECOVERY OF FISH SKIN RESIDUES IS AT THE HEART OF THE INNOVATIVE PROJECT REWARDED BY THE WORTH PARTNERSHIP PROJECT AND INTERPRETED BY THE CREATIVE VISION OF KRALOVA In the Twenties, it was Salvatore Ferragamo to create with the skins of red snapper and sea leopards some of his most beautiful creations. The use of fish skins, which during the time of autarky was a virtue made out of necessity, returns today to fuel a project in the sign of sustainability rewarded by the Worth Partnership Project, a four-year initiative of the European Union that favours collaborations between designers, creatives, manufacturing companies and tech firms to develop innovative products: Fish_Fish. Born from the combined creative vision of Kralova’s Spanish design and the company specialised in applied research for the conservation and protection of oceans and marine environments, Blue Marine Service Soc Coop, Fish_Fish has set itself the goal of promoting a discard material like fish skin, so it can be transformed into an innovative, organic, and biodegradable material destined for collections of no-gender shoes. “It is possible to have a cool design created in a sustainable way that benefits the very best partnership, that of Man and Earth – underlines Zuzana Kralova, founder of Kralova Studio – The Fish_Fish projects aims to demonstrate that also the footwear industry can recycle and reuse raw and innovative materials that satisfy the requirements of durability, comfort and the essential values of sustainability”. Fish_Fish uses fish skins that come from sustainable fishery in the Adriatic Sea: waste material from the food industry, it is ennobled by a process of natural tanning and dyeing. This high-quality, eco-designed product (designed with circular economy in mind) is produced in a local infrastructure in the Alicante district with an important heritage and manufacturing tradition of footwear, in plants that use energy from renewable sources and a efficient use of water, with respect for the environment.

COIM promotes sustainability with Laripur RS CONTINUING WITH SUCCESS IS THE DISTRIBUTION ON THE MARKET OF THE LARIPUR RS LINE OF ECO-SUSTAINABLE THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANES BASED ON RAW MATERIALS COMING FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES COIM, the Italian multinational chemical company, continues to accelerate on the theme of sustainability, focusing on the Laripur RS line of thermoplastic polyurethanes that contain a high percent of raw materials coming from renewable sources of vegetable origins. “Laripur RS is a material that is meeting up with strong interest in the market – explains Andrea Donghi, specialist in the research and development department – especially in the fashion shoe industry, with brands like Gucci, Prada, Westwood... which are always on the lookout for innovative solutions. In terms of performance, the Laripur RS line guarantees high performance and can be used in the same conditions of standard products, without having to change or modify the production plants present in the department, while maintaining the complete recyclability and the possibility of applying various kinds of masters, from dyes, to extenders, antistatic finishes, etc.”. The Laripur RS line includes a diversified range of products with a high level of technological performance and allows all traditional applications of TPU to be covered, from footwear to sports and technical items like tubes, trim, and film. The carbon content from renewable sources in the Laripur line arrives at 70%: a percent that guarantees a reduced environmental impact when compared to products derived from raw fossil fuels, providing a suitable answer to the growing awareness surrounding the environment with a higher level of sustainability. In addition to the existing range and as a further extension of the Laripur RS line, COIM continues to work in its R&D laboratories of Offanengo (CR) on developing technology from renewable sources also for other lines of products, thus confirming its increasingly strong commitment to the issue of sustainability with special attention on the themes of recyclability, reduced water consumption, and reduced CO2 emissions.

CERTIFICATIONS
THE MANY FACES OF SUSTAINABILITY Limiting ourselves to environmental product certifications that concern the fashion industry, we point out some that, in our view, more than others seem to interpret the sentiment of the sector’s operators, very careful to intercept the sensitivities of the stakeholders. The eco-design practice (designing materials and products without giving up the functional and aesthetic features of the design and with a low environmental impact) pushes to certify the features of the incoming materials based on a multiplicity of requirements: absence of critical chemical substances, organic origin (in the case of natural materials such as cotton), second life (percentage of recycled material), ecologically or socially controlled supply chains - fair trade, end-of-life product management (recyclability, biodegradation/compostability). Not being able to mention them all in this issue we can, however, provide a sort of system map. The ISO 14020 standard divides them into three categories: the first one collects the certifications developed by a body on the basis of a specific regulation/protocol that the companies concerned must comply with by submitting to verification moments on the part of independent entities. Oeko-Tex, Gots, GRS (Global Recycled Standard) are first type certifications. Then there are self-certifications that allow a company to communicate in a documented way the specific product features, for example its recyclability (second category). These are assertions that the subject expresses independently, but it is good to have the documentary process underlying the declaration supported by a third party. Finally, there are third-party certifications that provide for the application of LCA methodologies and allow, in case of approval by an accredited body, to obtain the EPD. Is that all there is to it? Not at all. In order to more precisely respond to the growing demand for reliable feedback from environmentalists, initiatives by associations, NGOs, individual or associated brands were born. Some of these, such as ZDHC and Afirm, for example, want to give importance to the commitment of the fashion supply chain to eliminate dangerous chemicals from processes, therefore going beyond the limits indicated by the Reach regulation which came into force in 2007. Solutions that indicate a change of pace in the ever prompter fashion industry, ready to ‘show its face’ by taking on specific commitments towards its consumers and stakeholders with sustainability reports, ethical codes, particular specifications, supply chain control. Not just that. Aware of its cultural weight as well as of its environmental and social responsibilities, the fashion sector has taken the field ready to play the game of sustainability also in terms of international politics. The Fashion Pact presented by 32 global fashion brands at the G7 last August fits in this direction, but, to date, only sixty companies have joined it. Why so much effort? Because sustainability pays off. Reducing consumption and waste is good for the environment and the company budget, the commitment to the planet and the quality of life of its inhabitants increases the company’s reputation, drives research and promotes innovation. What is the role of certifications in all this? They can provide valuable help in measurement, comparison and communication processes, as long as you remember that they are to be considered a means, not an end.
A posto quindi? Very black, very white, but above all very white/black tones characterise sneakers for the coming winter, playing around with contrasts, often emphasised by the use boxed or with a chunky construction.
